If you want to see the dress I imagined for Rory, Google 'Kate Middleton ice blue Bahamas reception' by Phillipa Lepley.
The following Friday, Rory had the day off of work. She spent the morning finally finding a gown for the gala and then immediately staying for the seamstress to take measurements for alterations. The woman had one week to alter the gown, so things had to happen quickly. Once she left the seamstress, she went to a restaurant to meet her grandpa for lunch. Richard was always a good sounding board for her life and big decisions. He always kept things to himself and never judged her. He also focused on Rory and didn't bother with others' perceptions, image or how it was going to affect him. As much as Rory loved and respected Lorelei and Emily, they both tended to focus on how Rory's decision would affect THEM more than how it would affect Rory. For example, when Rory spoke to her mom about moving to New York, Lorelei's first consideration was how much she was going to miss Rory. Rory's happiness and career was probably her 5th or 6th priority.
Rory arrived at the restaurant about 15 minutes early so she waited in the lobby for her grandpa. She read her novel for a while until her phone chimed to signal a text message. It was Stewart: 'Its time we talk. Can we meet for dinner?'
She had no idea what to say to him. She hated to admit that she was enjoying their 'break' more than she enjoyed their relationship. She decided to wait to text him back until after she spoke with her grandfather. Hopefully Richard would have some magical insight that would help her figure out what to do.
After the salad course and 20 minutes of surface level conversation, Richard set down his fork and asked, "So, I got the feeling that you needed to talk when you invited me to lunch. Is there something on your mind, Dear?"
"How could you tell?" she asked earnestly.
Richard smiled softly, "Because you always need to talk when you invite me to lunch." He reached over and squeezed her hand.
She sighed, "Yes, I guess so. Can I ask you about when you were engaged to the woman you were engaged to before Grandma?" Richard's eyes widened but Rory continued, "How did you know that you needed to change your mind?"
"Oh... Well, that's something I haven't thought about in a long time...," he said. "But, I remember that I wanted to do the right thing."
Rory nodded. "Did you fall in love with Grandma as soon as you met her?"
Richard shook his head. "I was very intrigued with Emily. She was beautiful, smart and witty. I was committed to Pennilyn so I insisted that Emily was only going to be my friend. My parents loved Pennilyn and were friends with her parents. Breaking it off meant disappointed more than just her, but our families too. Still, Emily really got under my skin. After a while, I knew I had feelings for her and I needed to end my engagement. I really wanted to do the right thing by everyone."
Rory nodded. "I understand."
"Rory," Richard asked. "Do you mind if I ask why you're asking me about this?"
"Well, Stewart and I have been arguing lately. And then we stopped talking to each other a few weeks ago. Now I'm not sure if I want to marry him," she said quietly.
"I see," Richard nodded. "How bad was the argument?"
"Well, he managed to run into Logan and then he asked me about him. I'd previously neglected to mention to him that Logan proposed to me and when it came out, he got really mad." Rory folded her hands in front of her. "I didn't keep it from him exactly, I just didn't tell him."
Richard said gingerly, "Maybe you need to ask yourself WHY you never told him that Logan proposed."
"Because I don't talk about Logan. I don't like to talk about him because I get so upset and I didn't want him to think that I was pining for Logan so I kept it to myself. I had no reason to think he would ever know about this. Logan was a long time ago," She said quickly.
"May I give you a tiny bit of advice?" Richard asked.
"Please do!" she pleaded.
"Unless you're absolutely sure, don't get married. I married your grandmother because I could not live without her. If Stewart isn't the perfect person for you, let him go. There are plenty of fish in the sea, Rory." Richard said with a smile.
"I do love him," she said as she took her first bite of her main course. "But I think its probably best that I let him go."
Richard asked, "Do you have someone else in mind?"
Rory shook her head and took a sip of water. "Not really. I still miss Logan all the time. Until I find someone who I care about as much as Logan, I don't think Its going to be right."
Richard pursed his lips and asked, "Well, what about Logan? I've heard he's in the city."
"How in the world did you hear that?" she asked suspiciously.
"Oh, well we ran into his parents at one of those charity dinners your grandmother insists we attend. The charity was dancers or dolphins or dalmatians... something like that." Richard fibbed quickly. He told Finn that he wouldn't break his confidence so he didn't.
Rory nodded, accepting the plausible explanation. After all, her grandparents knew Logan before she did. "Well, anyway. I need to figure out what to say when I speak to Stewart. He asked me to meet him tonight to talk, so I probably should figure out what to say by then."
Richard nodded and changed the subject to something lighter. He asked her about what she was reading and when they parted, he whispered, "You will know what to say. You are wonderful with words."
Rory hugged Richard and said, "Thank you so much for always being there for me."
She left the restaurant knowing exactly what she had to do.
