CHAPTER 4
"A Tournament of Skills"
The gentle sunlight peeked through Naruto's window, signaling a new day of adventure. For Naruto, it was a day of gathering new weapons and supplies for his upcoming self-training. He quickly got up, stretching his arms and legs while feeling the warmth that the sun radiated.
Just like his mentor, Itachi Uchiha, Naruto had learned how to be calm and respectful. Itachi had taught him how to practice patience and discipline over these three years, and Naruto had become a reflection of those teachings. He knew that today was going to be a day to put all that training into use.
As he made his way towards the weapons shop in a nearby village, he couldn't help but feel a sense of peace within himself. The forest surrounding Kakashi's old house was already bustling with the sound of chirping birds, and the fresh air was invigorating. He approached the doors of the shop that was always open and went in.
"Good morning, Daichi-san," Naruto greeted the blacksmith with a respectful bow.
Kaito Daichi, the skilled blacksmith, nodded back with a warm smile. "Good morning to you too, Naruto-kun. No need for formalities just call me Kaito. Anyway take your time to look around and let me know what you need."
Naruto perused the shop's wares, marveling at the various weapons and supplies available. He needed to stock up on kunai, shuriken, and other necessary tools for his ongoing training. But as he browsed, he noticed a set of weighted seals that caught his interest. He wanted to attach them to his weapons to improve his accuracy.
Kaito seized this moment to strike up a conversation. "You seem to have a clear idea of what you need, Naruto-kun. I assume your training under your sensei has concluded, judging by the look in your eyes."
Naruto paused for a moment, then responded, "Yes, Kaito-san, my training under my sensei has indeed come to an end. Now, I'm continuing on a journey of self-training."
Kaito nodded with an understanding gaze, his eyes reflecting curiosity. "Well, in that case, have you ever considered training with my kids? They're both experienced ninjas-in-training and incredibly skilled. Having them as training partners could expedite your growth."
Naruto eyebrows slit up as he was taken aback by the offer but saw the benefits of having companions on his training path. "Training with your kids? It's an intriguing offer. I'll need some time to think it over," he said.
Kaito, with a hint of a knowing smile, leaned in a bit closer and added a tempting incentive, "Take all the time you need, Naruto-kun. And if you decide to train with my kids, I'll even provide you with some of my finest weapons, free of charge."
Naruto's eyes widened at the offer, and he couldn't help but be surprised. He knew there was more to this proposal than met the eye, but it was an opportunity too good to pass up. He replied with a hint of enthusiasm, "I see. Thank you for your generous offer, Kaito-san. I'll definitely consider it. Believe it."
With that, Naruto bought his weapons and supplies and left the shop, his mind racing with the possibilities. He felt like the offer was too good to be true, but he couldn't deny the potential benefits. He decided to head home and think about it more before making a decision.
Next Day
The next morning, Naruto woke up early with the decision he had made. He had decided to take up the offer from Kaito and train with his kids to improve his skills. With a newfound sense of purpose, Naruto headed straight to Kaito's weapons shop. He knew that this was the beginning of a new chapter in his life, and he couldn't wait to get started with the training.
As he walked into the shop, Kaito greeted him with a warm smile. "Ah, Naruto-kun, good morning. Have you decided to train with my kids?"
Naruto smiled back, more determined than ever. "Yes, Kaito-san, I've made my decision. I am ready to train with your kids and improve my skills as a ninja."
Kaito's smile broadened, proud of Naruto's choice. "That's fantastic to hear, Naruto-kun. I'll introduce you to my kids right away, so you can begin your training."
With purpose, Kaito climbed the stairs to inform his children, and with a gentle knock, he roused them from their slumber. Tenten and Hikosa emerged from their rooms, greeted by the morning sun filtering through the windows. "Good morning, Tou-san," they said in unison, their voices filled with warmth.
Their father, Kaito, returned the greeting with a proud grin. "Good morning to you too, my kids. Now, come downstairs with me. I want you to meet someone."
Tenten and Hikosa followed their father down the stairs, their curiosity piqued. As they descended, their eyes fell upon Naruto, who stood waiting at the foot of the staircase. To their astonishment, he was the same boy they had encountered almost a year ago during a chance meeting in the forest.
"Naruto?" they both exclaimed, their voices laced with a mixture of confusion and surprise. Meanwhile, Naruto couldn't help but reflect, "The siblings that I met during my forest training a year ago, they were Kaito's children all along?"
Kaito, now recognizing the connection, chimed in with a hearty laugh. "You three seem to have a history, don't you?"
"No, Father, we did meet Naruto in the forest while we were training a year ago," Tenten explained, recounting the story of their initial encounter. Kaito nodded in acknowledgment, thinking, "Ah, well, that saves me from introducing you three to each other. I offered young Naruto to train with you two from now on, and Naruto accepted the offer. What do you kids say?"
Tenten and Hikosa, after a moment of exchanging glances, responded in unison, "Naruto has agreed to train with us. That's great. We're delighted to have him on board."
Hikosa chimed in, "Absolutely, one more teammate can only help as we prepare for the upcoming tournament of young ninjas."
Tenten then excitedly mentioned the upcoming event. "Ah yes, the tournament."
Naruto, his curiosity piqued, couldn't help but inquire, "What's this tournament I keep hearing about since I arrived in this village?"
Kaito was quick to fill him in. "Every three years, there's a tournament for young ninjas in training, aged between 12 to 14 years old. Its called as Tournament of Skills. It's a chance for them to test their skills against peers of a similar age, and there's even a grand prize at stake."
"A tournament for young ninjas with a grand prize?" Naruto asked with growing interest.
Kaito elaborated further, "Indeed, normally the tournament consists of 18 to 21 participants, forming 6 to 7 teams. Preliminary rounds help identify the most skilled individuals, and, keep in mind, participants can only enter as part of a team."
Naruto's realization set in, and he turned to Kaito with newfound understanding. "So, the reason you wanted me to train with your kids was not just for training but also to join them in the tournament, right?"
Kaito nodded. "Yes, but it's not just for the tournament. I wanted you three to benefit from it and continue to grow as ninja."
Naruto was genuinely grateful for the opportunity and enthusiastically committed to participating in the upcoming tournament. "Very well, then, count me in for the tournament. Believe it."
Excitement and determination gleamed in Naruto's eyes as he leaned in, asking, "When is the tournament starting, and what are the rules?"
Kaito, having the answers at the ready, responded, "The tournament is scheduled to begin in a week and will last for another week. As for the rules, my children can brief you on those details later."
Naruto's next concern was practical. He began, "But my house is quite far away from this village, and—"
Kaito cut him off with a reassuring smile and an offer that left Naruto taken aback. "No worries about that, Naruto. We have a spare room in our house, and you're welcome to stay as long as you need. You won't have to worry about food either; we'll provide that for free."
Naruto's eyes widened in astonishment once again. The generosity he was experiencing was beyond anything he had expected, and he couldn't help but feel deeply touched. It was as though the pieces of his future were falling into place with an astonishing kind of ease. "I... I don't know what to say, Kaito-san. Why are you being so generous to me? It's not like I am that important."
Kaito's eyes sparkled with a sense of admiration as he gazed at the young ninja. With a fond smile, he began to explain, "Ah Naruto my boy, I've known you for a while now. I've observed your unwavering dedication to training, your unyielding determination, your impeccable manners. You carry yourself with a sense of respect and humility that's hard to miss, and that's something I deeply respect. In my line of work as a blacksmith and a father, I've met many young ninja like you, but there's something exceptional about you."
Naruto listened, touched by Kaito's words. He had always strived to be the best he could be, but hearing such heartfelt praise from someone he respected filled him with a sense of validation and warmth.
Kaito continued, "When I see potential and character like yours, I can't help but want to support and encourage it. It's not just about the tournament or the training. It's about helping you grow into the best ninja you can be. You've already embraced the values of patience and discipline, and you've shown that you're more than ready to walk the path of a true ninja. That's why I'm grateful to have you in our lives, Naruto."
Naruto's heart swelled with gratitude as he understood that these offers weren't just random acts of kindness; they were rooted in genuine respect and admiration. Kaito had seen something special in him, and the bond that was forming felt like the beginning of an incredible journey, both as a ninja and as a friend.
Overwhelmed by emotions, tears welled up in his eyes, and he couldn't help but rush forward and embrace the blacksmith. "Thank you, Kaito-san." he said, his voice trembling with gratitude. Naruto had learned to control his emotions under Itachi's supervision but then again Naruto was a child afterall.
Kaito sat down on Naruto's level and warmly returned the hug, his deep voice whispering in Naruto's ear, "Welcome to the family." It was a moment of genuine connection and a promise of a bright future ahead for Naruto as he embarked on this new adventure with his newfound friends.
Meanwhile, Tenten and Hikosa, observing this heartfelt exchange between Naruto and their father Kaito, shared a knowing smile. They had already seen something special in Naruto during their previous encounter in the forest, and now they were thrilled to welcome him into their ninja training journey. They exchanged glances, silently reaffirming their acceptance of Naruto as not just a teammate but also a friend.
Their initial confusion upon seeing Naruto again had transformed into a sense of excitement and camaraderie. Tenten's eyes sparkled with anticipation as she thought about the adventures and challenges they would face together, while Hikosa couldn't help but imagine the three of them making a formidable ninja team.
Their unspoken approval hung in the air as they watched Naruto and Kaito share that heartfelt moment, knowing that their group was now complete and ready for the upcoming ninja tournament.
After a delicious breakfast with his new friends and mentor, Naruto felt energized and eager to begin their first training session. He had already been shown to his room and made himself comfortable, and now it was time to put his skills to the test.
Tenten, Hikosa, and Kaito led Naruto to a training area outside the house. The spacious clearing was surrounded by trees, offering the perfect balance of sunshine and shade. Naruto could sense the excitement in the air as they prepared for their first sparring session.
With his characteristic determination, Naruto faced his new teammates. "I'm ready to learn and spar with you guys," he declared, a spark of enthusiasm in his eyes.
Tenten and Hikosa exchanged a glance, both eager to see Naruto's abilities and learn from each other. Kaito, with a proud smile, nodded in approval. "Remember, this is a friendly spar to gauge each other's skills. We're here to learn and improve together."
In the midst of their spar, Naruto demonstrated his calm and collected demeanor, a testament to his training under Itachi. Kaito watched with a keen eye, knowing that Naruto was about to face off against both Tenten and Hikosa without knowing any jutsu.
The spar began with Tenten taking the initiative. She swiftly hurled a kunai at Naruto, her movements precise and calculated. However, Naruto's quick reflexes allowed him to dodge the projectile, which ultimately embedded itself into a tree behind him. With a hint of amusement, Naruto couldn't help but comment, "You missed."
But just as he turned to face Hikosa, he realized the speed and agility of the siblings. Hikosa had closed the gap between them in the blink of an eye, poised to deliver a powerful punch. Reacting swiftly, Naruto ducked under the attack and retorted, "Fast but not close enough."
But before he could launch his counterattack, Tenten seized the opportunity and flung another kunai toward Naruto, forcing him to retreat and evade. As he nimbly dodged the incoming weapon, Naruto quickly assessed the situation. He knew he had a lot to learn and adapt to in this new training environment. So he took out his Kunai and got ready and took a stance.
The fight continued with a fury of fists, kicks, and kunai being thrown at Naruto, and he skillfully dodged and deflected the attacks with his own kunai. The spar was intense, each participant pushing their limits to learn and grow together.
As the spar reached its climax, Naruto's training and observation paid off. With a burst of agility and precision, he found an opening in Tenten and Hikosa's relentless assault. In the blink of an eye, Naruto appeared right behind both of them, his kunai pointed at their necks.
With a smile that reflected his excitement and satisfaction, Naruto declared, "Looks like I've got you now."
Tenten and Hikosa froze, realizing that Naruto had outmaneuvered them. They lowered their kunai, acknowledging his victory. "Impressive," Hikosa admitted.
Tenten nodded in agreement, "You're fast, way faster than us Naruto, and your observation skills are top-notch."
Kaito clapped his hands, beaming with pride. "Great job, Naruto! Your hard work and determination are shining through, and you've adapted quickly to our style, just as expected."
Naruto, releasing his kunai, looked at Kaito, Tenten, and Hikosa with a sense of gratitude. "Thanks, Kaito-san, and you too, Tenten and Hikosa, for the praise. I may be faster and stronger, but that's because I work harder. You two yourselves are not bad, believe it" Naruto said, a proud smile appearing on his face.
Tenten grinned, feeling the camaraderie that was forming within their new team. "We'll catch up to you in no time, Naruto. This is just the beginning."
Hikosa nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we've got a lot of training ahead of us, and we're ready for it."
Kaito, their mentor beamed with pride. "You're all doing great, and you're making progress every day. I have no doubt you'll become an incredible team."
With this affirmation, the group's enthusiasm remained high as they continued their training, looking forward to the tournament and adventures that lay ahead.
As they walked together, Naruto's thoughts swirled in his mind, a contemplative expression on his face. "I used to be jealous of you two," he admitted softly to himself, his gaze focused on the path ahead on Tenten and Hikosa. "The skills you displayed a year ago, they seemed almost unreal to me. That's what pushed me to train harder, to take my training to a whole new level, all with the goal of surpassing you both."
The honesty in his voice was evident. Naruto continued, his voice carrying the weight of his past experiences. "You two were the first kids to acknowledge me for more than just a demon, a menace. You treated me like a human, a child of your own age. You made me feel like I belonged." He paused for a moment, reflecting on the profound impact that had on him.
"Now I understand where you two got those qualities," Naruto said, a determined glint in his eye. "The warmth and hospitality I've found here, it's same love I received from my sensei. It's truly amazing. I've finally found the love that I never had once, and I'll protect it with every ounce of my being. Believe it."
