Chapter 9.
Drago seemed puzzled by what Snively was doing. He was trying to save the Princess, suddenly a shuddering thought hit the wolf. what if Snively outed his deception?
"Unless.." Drago smirked.
"I think we should fire on Snively Robotnik, right here and now!" he looked to Lupe.
"What? But the Princess is over there." Lupe protested "We will not fire."
"But?" he began.
"Unless he puts the princess in harm's way, we will not fire! that's an order!" she snapped at him.
Lupe looked ahead, with gritted teeth. She wondered what Snively was planning, he could not possibly be trying to help Sally. That was impossible.
"This has to be some kind of trick." The Pack leader thought to herself.
"Whats going on?" Rotor asked his teammates, dumbfounded.
"Beats me sug, but one thing I know is that this has to be some kind of trick." Bunnie replied, looking to Rotor, while still glancing at what was happening.
"I agree with Bunnie, Zat Snively Robotnik iz as untrustworthy as his uncle..." Antoine narrowed his eyes.
Tails said nothing, he kept his attention on what was happening. The fox was just hoping that Sally would be ok. Thats all he cared about right now. A pair of drones with guns were moving around the corner.
"Why are you saving me?" Sally asked, suspicion in her tone.
"I know, it feels weird… But, something happened that I don't know how to explain." Snively began to explain "Well… I don't want you to die or my uncle to win."
"What?" Hershey spoke up, getting the other two's attention "Helping Robotnik win has always been what you wanted!"
Snively knew she was right. He could not even think of a possible defense. Nor did he seek to do so, the man knew of his past. That he was hardly any better than his uncle.
He faced Hershey "You're right I did. I swear that I don't want to do that anymore though."
"And we're supposed to trust you?" Hershey snapped at him, Sally silently agreeing.
"No, I would never dare ask for your trust, not after everything I've done." Humility evident in his tone, the Overlander looked down in shame "Especially of you Hershey as you sought to kill me.. Or you Princess Sally… After everything that has occurred between us."
Sally gave a small sniffle, feeling touched. Snively sounded sincere about his apology. Sally had to give him credit. He really did seem regretful his actions with the evil Doctor Robotnik. Maybe he wasn't a monster after all.
"Well.. I believe you…" Sally mumbled
"What?" Hershey and Snively asked simultaneously.
"Yes, you're being genuine. So I suppose you have a reason for helping us." Her voice cracked. "Maybe…maybe if we can figure it out…we might be able to make up for our past actions towards each other." Sally paused, biting her lip.
"You make up?" Snively asked incredulously "you did nothing wrong."
"I know that." Sally insisted. "but we made a mistake. And, I'm willing to admit to that… I can't imagine what would be worse than living under your uncle's rule for so wrong." The Princess shuddered.
"I had free will, and I was never a very nice person even before I helped him…" Snively admitted "I can't let you absolve me…"
"How else can we make things right?" Sally pleaded.
It was a question everyone was wondering about. Hershey had been keeping silent about all of this until now. She had no idea what to say or think.
"By working together here and now." Snively stated "That's our only course of action."
"But what about you? When this is all over." Hershey spoke up, eyeing Snively.
"When this all ends, you may do whatever you want with me, try me as a war criminal, whatever you wish.." Snively answered "I don't care about me, but about Mobius. I saw a horrific mechanized future that my uncle will cause after he's through with Knothole. I can't let that happen."
"Well you've got yourself a team." Hersey said "We'll work together to stop that. We owe you that much."
Hershey had been referring to how Snively had saved Sally's life and prevented her from making a massive mistake. She had to admit, any prior hatred towards him had cooled somewhat.
"Thank you, I appreciate it." Smiling kindly at the two. Snively looked forward once more.
As the three were contemplating their next course of action, the wolf pack and Tail's team just watched on. Meanwhile, two drones of Robotnik's design were heading Snively's way. Robotnik was glaring, still seething at his nephew's insurrection.
"Defying me for the Mobians, how disgusting." Robotnik's eyes narrowed "I should have known from the start, if my own brother would be an irritant, it stood to reason that you would be the same." Robotnik spat.
The drones moved around a corner as Snively talked to Sally and Hershey. He told them everything about the plan to try and kill Sally and frame Sonic. This shocked Hershey.
"But... No..." she shook her head in disbelief "Drago put me up to it, he said..."
Hershey looked down, at a loss for words. Snively gave her a sympathetic look. He saw how much doing right by Mobius meant to her.
"I'm so sorry Hershey." He frowned.
The Mobian cat felt touched by the sincerity in Snively's words, oddly enough. Unfortunately, that did not quell a mixed bag of emotions welling up inside her.
She sighed and turned to Snively, a slight smile on her face "So where does all this leave us then?"
"Well, this is a major step in the right direction, me stopping you from potentially killing the princess." Snively explained, smiling a little.
Drago thought quick and looked to Lupe "We should try and kill Snively now, this could be a trick."
"No. Not yet." Lupe shook her head "For two reasons, one we cannot risk hurting the princess, and two. Whether or not Snively is on side, it could be valuable to keep him alive."
The Pack were listening to this. Suddenly, the drones had made their way to Snively, Hershey and Sally's location.
One of them spoke in a mechanical tone "Dr. Robotnik has ordered your execution."
Robotnik's voice came through the other drone "Well Snively, the time has come to dispose of you."
"Admittedly, this comes of no surprise." the tyrant sneered from where he was sitting.
"No, no.. Not surprising." Robotnik repeated, grinning.
Snively gulped, Sally and Hershey saw the fear in his eyes as he looked up at the drones. His eyes held a strong look of defiance in them as well however. The Overlander refused to back down.
"Why though Snively, or Colin?" Robotnik asked "Why betray me for the Mobians?"
"Because you're a terrible tyrant, Julian!" Snively shouted as the drones approached. "You're the scourge of all of Mobius! You're a complete and utter monster!"
"Its too late for flatterly." Robotnik teased "Though, say you lived. The Mobians might just end up imprisoning you…"
"If I end up in jail for life…" He gulped "Or, worse… Then so be it. I have to do my part to stop you."
Sally felt respect for Snively, as did Hershey. The two mobians went towards Snively to stand by him. The Overlander was surprised by this, as was his uncle.
"How sickeningly touching…" Robotnik sneered coldly "I may throw up."
The dictator doctor then pressed a button, a sadistic grin on his face. The drones were ready to fire, as they targeted Snively. The Overlander refused to run or look away.
"If I die.. I die…" he muttered, Sally and Hershey looked to him.
Hershey could not believe that Snively Robotnik, Dr. Robotnik's right hand could ever be so noble. The mobian cat felt great respect for Snively. She stood next to him, surprising Snively. Sally did the same.
"How touching, drones… Fire!" Robotnik ordered.
The drones' guns charged up as they were ready to fire upon the three. Rotor thought fast and picked up his rocket launcher as he blasted the drones. As the drones were blasted out of the sky, the Overlander and the two Mobians looked over to him. He gave them a thumbs up, smirking.
Sally gave her friend a grateful smile. Robotnik banged his fist on an arm rest, his red eyes glowed with fury. He gritted his teeth.
The doctor spoke into Drago Wolf's ear piece, a low snarl in his voice "That snake is about to blow your cover as a mole, I know it… Kill him."
The wolf nodded, grinning. He was not going to let Snively blow his cover. He would make up some lie to tell Hershey later. He eyed a sniper rifle that he could use.
