Chapter 6

After the dishes were cleared and cleaned after dinner, Dotty and the boys said their good nights, and went upstairs.

When the house was quiet once more, Lee said to Amanda, "Let's head outside for a bit, huh? It's a nice night."

Amanda answered warmly, "Sure..."

They went out the back door, and heading to the gazebo, Lee gestured to Amanda remarking, "Let's sit over here, huh?"

Amanda sat thinking, Oh, gosh! Does he know already? Ooh, of course not! If he did, you know he'd say something already.

And Lee was at that moment watching her as she sat down, and thought, Okay, something's really out of whack here, even for her...

He began to speak, commenting, "Okay, Amanda, I need to ask you-"

Suddenly, Amanda, standing up then, took a deep breath, let it out, and then in her typical ramble fashion, stated quickly, " Lee... I really thought I was, but then the doctor told me that it was a false positive, and Mother thought maybe she was, but it turned out for her to be menopause, but after you went to work this afternoon, I got a call from Dr. Goodman, who told me that the rabbit really did die..."

Lee bewildered at her fast paced speech, sat down, and queried, "Wh-What the hell did you just say?! What does a rabbit have to do with-"

Realizing what Amanda was trying to tell him, it hit him like a ton of bricks, and then Amanda saw the color drain out of Lee's face as he answered slowly, "Oh, My God! You-You can't be serious! It was a hypothetical you gave me! What-What were you testing me, to see if I'd run out on you like your ex did?!"

Amanda, shaking her head, touched his shoulder gently, replying softly, "N-No, Sweetheart! I'd never do anything like that! The-The lab made a mistake, that's all! So it turns out I really am pregnant, and I'm really, really sorry, but-but I swear, we can work this out...However you want to do it, okay?"

As Lee sat there not saying a word for a long moment, Amanda gulped and asked, "Are you alright? Please say something, Lee... I-I know it's a shock. Believe me, no one is more shocked here than I am-"

Lee sighed and queried with a swallow, "So, how soon will you pop? Does your family know yet?"

Amanda raised an eyebrow at Lee, asking with bewilderment, "Pop?! What am I, a turkey? "

Lee groaned, and remarked, "Sorry, I meant how long before-"

Amanda, shaking her head, said with a hint of anger, "Seven months...And no, my family doesn't know yet...See, I thought maybe I should do the right thing and tell the father first! And before you even have the nerve to stupidly ask, yes, you are this child's father!"

Amanda sat down, waiting for Lee to absorb the news, thinking, Oh, boy! I may have just blown this relationship apart, but it's not like I could've kept this quiet for too much longer...

Finally, Lee stood up, and holding out a hand to her, answered, "Okay, c'mon...Go get your purse, and let's go-"

Amanda, taking Lee's hand as she got up from the gazebo bench asked, looking at her watch, "Wh-Where? It's awfully late to head out now-"

Lee commented, "To the Agency...I'm gonna have Dr. Kelford take a look at you-"

Amanda, surprised, stepped back, asking, "Why? I just told you-"

Lee, putting up a hand, replied shakily, "I-I know, but as much as I want to believe you, I don't believe your regular doctor, so we're getting another test done right, so we can then plan our next move here... I'll-I'll meet you at the car..."

As Lee went out the back gate, Amanda slowly went back into the house thinking sadly , It's not a case we have to deal with, Lee! Sure, you say you believe me, but you're really hoping it's wrong, aren't you?!

Taking her purse off the kitchen counter and heading towards the front door, she looked towards the upstairs, where her family was currently sleeping, and sighed, thinking, At least I know I'll have support here if things change with Lee after tonight...

She went out the front door, locking it, and heading for Lee's car, thought bravely with a gulp, I was fine before I met you, Lee Stetson, and I'll be fine after you decide this is too much for you to deal with!
