Oh My Gosh

Chapter 7

It was the next morning when Amanda awoke in her hospital room.

Lee had taken her, the night before, amid protests, to the Agency hospital to have her thoroughly checked out by Dr. Kelford.

Blood was drawn, and a urine sample was taken, and then Lee insisted Dr. Kelford run any other tests she could think of to rule out any other problems that Amanda may have been unaware of from her regular physician, Dr. Goodman.

As she looked around, she then noticed Lee asleep in the chair near her, and then found a note on the nightstand near her.

She read it as it said:

Amanda,

Please forgive my behavior of last night. I don't know where my head was, but I promise you now, that I will not be going anywhere, regardless of the test results. You are and always will be in my future. I love you! By the way, I phoned your mother last night when they were admitting you, telling her that we had a work emergency, but that you would call her sometime today.

Amanda gulped as she finished reading the note, and shaking her head, carefully got up, and going to Lee's side, brushed aside the hair from his forehead, and gave him a kiss on his temple, whispering, "I love you, too, Big Fella..."

Lee then awoke with a start, and looking around, found Amanda next to him, and remarked gently as he got up, "H-Hey! Get back in bed until Doc Kelford brings us the results, huh?"

Amanda sighed answering, "Well, good morning to you as well! Honey, please stop! I'm fine, alright?"

But Lee gestured softly, "I'm sure you will be, but just please, humor me?"

Amanda nodded, and getting back into bed, asked, "Well, now what?"

Suddenly, the hospital room door opened, and Billy, tapping the door, walked in, answering, "That's what I'd like to know..."

Looking with concern at Amanda, Billy queried, "Are you all right?"

Amanda responded carefully, "So far, I guess."

Looking at Lee, she asked, "You didn't tell him?"

Lee sighed remarking, "I wanted to find out what the results were and then let him in on it-"

Billy then putting up a hand, stopped him by stating, " Hold it! Scarecrow, I am your Unit Chief at this Agency. If you or any one of my people need to see any doctors here, I need to be informed...Now, are you going to tell me what's happening here, or do I ask Dr. Kelford?"

Lee glanced at Amanda, who looked back at him, and replied with a shrug, "We may as well...I have to tell my family anyway, later..."

Lee commented slowly, "Okay..."

Looking at Billy, he answered, " Our relationship status has changed, Billy...It started back with the Stemwinder case...I did insist that she stay here with her family, but she insisted that she couldn't help her family by being in a holding cell, so that's why she went on the run with me."

Billy, puzzled, looked at the two, and queried, "But why did you hide the change? Did you think I wouldn't approve?"

Amanda answered with a shake of her head, "No, Sir, that wasn't it at all...See, this was new for us, and we had a lot to figure out with our career, and my family...We knew we wanted to be together, but we weren't sure of the Agency policies since Lee and I are already partners...Then there was my family to consider. Lee hadn't even met my mother until the Birol case..."

Lee cleared his throat commenting, "I felt I had to at least in some way, reassure Mrs. West that Amanda was just delayed on another trip, even if I couldn't tell her the truth...I then proposed to Amanda the day we were rescued."

Amanda continued, taking Lee's hand, as she stated, "So, I accepted, and from then on, we'd been dating and taking weekends away when we could...Then just recently, after one of our trips, I wasn't feeling well, so I took a home pregnancy test, which was positive. I then followed up with my regular physician, Dr. Goodman, who told me it was a false positive..."

Then Lee answered, "So, last night, she tells me that the doctor called her, saying that the lab made a mistake, and that she really was pregnant-"

Billy shaking his head, asked Lee tiredly, "Let me take a wild guess. You wanted to make absolutely sure there were no mistakes this time, so you brought Amanda here, to go through the exact same tests her regular doctor gave her?"

Lee groaned, and nodding, answering, "I-I know, Billy! But I-"

Amanda, patting Lee's arm, replied soothingly, "It's alright, Sweetheart...You were just looking out for me...In your own overzealous way-"

Lee, surprised, asked, "Overzealous? But I-"

Just then, Dr. Kelford knocked and came into the room, stating, "Well, I have the results here, Amanda, and-"

Then, surprised at seeing both Lee and Billy in the room, she queried, "Is there a reason you're both here before visiting hours, Gentlemen?"

Billy remarked, "I just came to see why Amanda was admitted without my knowledge."

Lee, clearing his throat, replied, "I just wanted to check on her first thing-I apologize if it's too early-"

Amanda sighed, seeing the blanket on the chair, realizing then that Lee hadn't gotten clearance to be in there, and asked, "So, when did you sneak in here last night?"

Lee remarked slowly, "After the nurse and Doc Kelford left around 10...You were already asleep, and-"

Dr. Kelford sighed stating, "Mr. Stetson, we do have rules here, regardless of the partnership between you and Mrs. King...Now, if you don't mind, please wait out in the hall until I'm finished examining her one more time?"

Lee queried, "Look, just tell me she's alright, and I'll go-"

Amanda shook her head, and interrupting Lee, looked at Billy querying, "Sir? Maybe you can take Lee to go get coffee? Please?"

Lee protested quickly, "But, Amanda-"

Billy then nodded to Amanda and Dr. Kelford, answering, "Excellent suggestion, Amanda...And maybe Lee can then also do some paperwork, and come back here this afternoon, so you can get proper rest."

Then taking Lee's elbow, Billy guided Lee out the door, with Amanda calling out, " I'll be fine, Lee! Don't worry!"

But as Billy and Lee got in the elevator, Billy stated, "Look...Keeping you busy is the best thing for you right now, so don't even think about sneaking your way back here, capisce?"

Lee with finality, sighed, answering, "Okay, okay, I'll do it..."

And as Billy and Lee made their way to the bullpen area to get coffee, Lee thought, This is gonna be a long day...
