Chapter 21
As Lee and Amanda sat on the couch in his apartment that afternoon, he went through telling her the debacled tale of trying to get a particular ring for her for their wedding, and as he was finishing up, Amanda's mouth began to tremble, and tears came to her eyes as she said gulping then, "Y-You did all that for m-me? Wh-Why?"
Lee gave a curious look and shrugged, stating, "Aw, I dunno, Honey...Maybe because I love you or something, huh? I mean, for the first time ever in my adult life now, I seem to care for someone else other than my own crazy self...What do you think?"
Reaching for a tissue on the coffee table, Amanda, clearing her throat as she wiped her eyes, answered softly, "Well...I think that you're just about the sweetest man alive for going through all that for me, but you chose that engagement ring for me, and I-"
Lee shook his head, and grasping her hands, kissed them, replying with a chuckle, "Okay, first of all, don't let it get around that I'm all that, because I'll never hear the end of it at work..."
As Amanda found herself giggling at the statement, Lee then continued by remarking, "And second of all, the reason I need the ring back is because the Colonel has something much better in mind."
Amanda quipped, "Oh? Does he want to marry me now?"
Lee guffawed, "Aw, c'mon! No, stop it!"
Amanda responded with a shrug, saying, "Okay. Then what did he have in mind?"
Suddenly, Lee, remembering something, jumped up from the couch, and quickly plugging the living room phone back in, commented as he dialed a number, "Damn! I forgot to call Josie back to tell her that her help is not needed now! Just a second, Sweetie, while I take care of this, huh?"
Amanda, sighing at the sudden interruption, rose from the couch, answering tiredly as she headed for the kitchen, " Alright, you call whoever Josie is, while I fix my lunch plate...After all, that is basically why I'm here...You know, a lunch date?"
But Lee didn't hear her as he concentrated on the phone, stating quickly as he heard someone on the other end pick up, "Josie? Oh, Thank God! You-You didn't leave yet, did you?"
Listening for a moment, he answered, "Well, you won't believe this, but my uncle just got in touch with me, and has just what I'm looking for, so, I appreciate the help you were giving me but I'm okay now, thanks..."
Lee then sighed answering, "I-I know! I understand! Look, just tell them that I will be in touch soon, and send along my thanks as well, huh? Okay, bye..."
Hanging up, he looked around and queried, "Amanda? Where did you go?"
A moment later, Amanda emerged from the kitchen stating crisply as she put down two plates of steaming food on the dining room table, "If you had listened to me before, I said I was getting my lunch! And if you even care, I got yours too!"
She sat herself down, and began eating as Lee came over and, swallowing hard, answered softly, "I-I'm sorry...It's just that-"
Amanda, swallowing her bite, then stating with an annoyed air, "I don't care any more, Lee! I don't want to talk about this again! Just do whatever you gotta do later! Now, can you please get me something to drink? I couldn't carry the plates as well as the drinks, alright?"
Lee gave a wary look to her and then nodding, went into the kitchen, thinking, Oh, man! Is this the start of it? First the weight gain, and then the moodiness?
A moment later, Amanda yelled, "Lee?! Are you coming with our drinks, or do I have to do that too?!"
Lee shook his head, commenting quickly, "Coming, Sweetheart!"
Getting two glasses and filling them with ice, he looked in the fridge and found only two cans of beer left.
Taking them out, Lee poured both into the glasses and bringing them out, placed them on the table, responding as he sat down across from her, "Here you go, Sweetie...Everything smells great!"
Amanda staring at her glass with a blank look, asked, "Lee, just what is that?"
Lee looked over at her querying, "What?"
Amanda shook her head and pointing to her glass, answered, "That! Did you buy apple juice, or is that what I think it is?!"
Lee, with confusion, stared at the glass, and then realized his error, and remarked, getting up to take her glass,"Ohh...Sorry, Honey! Here, let me-"
But Amanda got up herself, saying tersely, " Never mind! I know you're new to this experience, but you have a job ahead of you! When you come over for dinner later tonight, I want you to read up on pregnancy, childbirth, and child care books that I have in my bookcase! Got it?"
Taking her glass, Amanda went back to the kitchen to get water for herself, while Lee, thrown by her words, sat thinking with a nod, Oh, yeah...Moodiness! Am I going to make it through this?!
Lee made a mental note to himself to talk to Dotty about how to handle this new phase he was entering into, because at that moment, he didn't know whether he was coming or going with Amanda's current state!
