Also, to answer one comment. The Belos that was Lich in the "Movie", was a Belos from an alternate universe where Luz had dethroned him and is apparently evil. However, the Belos in this universe is very much alive. Depending on your definition of that word as we still don't know if he really is a lich, since we did see him turn into something and go berserk for a little while. It was only his shadow, but we can infer that something is wrong with him.
Anyway, if you don't know, there is also an update for "Heroes From Another World", and there will be another update for this and the other fic at the same time Sunday.
Luz had flown through the sky on her Witch Speeder, King was riding in her lap as they headed to their destination. Since her return, Luz had hit the ground running, Eda and Lilith missed out on a few days of bounty hunting since she was away, and Luz was determined to make up for it by working double time to bring in the bounties. Unfortunately, due to their low ranking, they weren't allowed to go for the larger bounty targets, so they had to stick to the low ones. Currently, Luz was on the trail of a bounty worth four-thousand snails, a demon by the name of Garlog. It took some time, but Luz and King were able to track down the fugitive to a cave on the far side of the island.
Luz had King stay behind her as she entered the cave, she pulled out a Light Glyph and created an orb of light that followed close to her and illuminated the dark cave. Luz kept on guard as she walked through the dank cavern, ready to fight the fugitive demon. It didn't take long for the two of them to reach the back of the cave, and once they did, Luz was greeted by a large, menacing shadow.
"AHAHAHAHA! FOOLISH CHILD! LEAVE THIS PLACE, BEFORE YOU MEET YOUR DEMISE!" the shadow warned.
Luz furrowed her brow as she said, "Do not underestimate me, Garlog! For I am the Good Witch Luz, Hunter of Monsters!" She paused for dramatic effect as s gentle breeze wafted through the cave. Luz reached into her pockets and pulled out two Fire Glyphs and fed mana into them to transform the fireball in her right hand into a fire sword, and with the second she enhanced the fireball, making it three times its normal size, primed to fire. "NOW EAT THIS SUCKAAAAAAaaaaaaa…oh."
Upon further inspection, Luz saw that the shadow was attached to a small creature standing next to a lamp. Garlog realized his cover was blown and readied to run, however, Luz dismissed her two fire spells and used a Plant Glyph to shoot out a vine that wrapped around Garlog's legs, tripping him up long enough for Luz to walk over and grab him by the scruff.
"You're Garlog?" Luz took out the wanted poster for the demon, which depicted Garlog as a large, musclebound creature. She even held him up next to it for comparison. And although the features were exaggerated, the little creature was indeed Garlog. A deadpan expression befell Luz's features as she said, "This is pathetic…"
"Small I may be, but you will soon know fear when I lay waste to all that you–!"
Garlog was cut off as King came up and snapped his jaws around the tiny demon. Luz was stunned for a moment as she tried to process what just happened, and once she had, she said, "King, drop it, now." Luz let go and King dropped to all fours, but he did not release Garlog. "Drop it, now!"
King's response was to start running around the cave.
"Drop it! No! I am not going to play right now, c'mon, KING!" Luz cried out. "Ugh!"
Luz put on her Connect ring and activated it.
[Connect, Please.]
A magic circle appeared in front of King, and another in front of Luz. The Latina took a step back as she watched King run straight into the magic circle she had placed in his path. She held out her arms and waited, a moment later, King came out of the second magic circle and barreled right into Luz's waiting arms.
"WEH!"
"Gotcha!" Luz exclaimed. "Drop it, King! I mean it!"
King groaned and spat out Garlog, the tiny demon flopped onto the cave floor, covered in saliva and in a complete daze. Luz released King and crouched next to him.
"King, you better not have killed him, he's wanted alive." Luz put her ear close to his tiny mouth and heard him draw breath. "Oh, gracias a Dios, está vivo (Oh, thank God, he's alive)." Luz snapped her fingers a few times to see if Garlog would respond, but nothing happened.
[Connect, Please.]
"Let's take him back and collect our bounty," said Luz as she picked Garlog up by the scruff again. The Latina glanced at the skull faced demon, noticing how he was eyeing the tiny creature. "King, no! You can have a snack when we get back."
"Meh."
The two passed through the portal, leaving the cave behind and reappearing at the Owl House. Luz opened the door and said aloud, "Eda, I'm home! And I caught Garlog!"
Eda came in and then raised an eyebrow when she saw the creature in Luz's hands. "Uh…kid, I think you goofed."
"I wish I did, but nope, this is Garlog." Luz took out the wanted poster and showed it Eda, holding it up to the unconscious creature for comparison.
"Huh…well I'll be darned, it is him. Oh well, a bounty's a bounty." Eda took hold of Garlog and made a face of disgust. "Ugh, why's he all slimy."
"Ask King," said Luz as she walked up the stairs.
"King," said Eda as she looked down at him.
"It was a long flight and I got hungry!" King admitted.
"No eating the bounties!"
Luz went into her room and sighed, it had been two days since she returned to the Boiling Isles, and in that time she was gone she apparently missed a lot. The young Latina took out her cellphone, propped it on a small table, and hit record. "Hola mamá! I know you haven't heard from me in a while, so I thought I'd give you an update on what's been going on. It's been a couple of weeks since the Petrification Ceremony, even longer since I became a Kamen Rider. Oh, fun fact, I am a magical superhero now!"
Luz brought up her Light Style ring.
"Some…things happened and now I have the power to transform into a magical superhero called: Kamen Rider Witch! You know, like those Japanese shows I watch on the internet! And no, I'm not talking about 'Power Rangers' those two are night and day." Luz shook her head. "Okay, getting off topic. Anyway, yeah, so I've been protecting the Boiling Isles from dangerous monsters called Phantoms, and I'm the only one who can do it because, well, I have the magic needed to defeat them, and also because another Rider from another universe came and gave me the tools I needed to do so…!"
Luz paused the recording. She could already see her mother's worried expression, being in a world of demons and witches was one thing but finding out that your daughter is willingly putting herself in danger to fight against monsters that have no qualms about hurting people to get what they want, yeah, even Luz would be worrying if she was in her mother's shoes. With another sigh, Luz resumed the recording.
"I also kinda sorta…destroyed the only way I could come back home." Luz rubbed the back of her head as she glanced down at the floor. "I had to do it…the ruler, Emperor Belos, he wanted the portal, and he was willing to kill Eda to do it. I don't know why or for what reason, but I could tell whatever he had planned would not be good for our world. So…I made a choice."
Luz took a moment to rub her temples. She's not going to understand any of this.
"But beyond all that, this world is filled with inexplicable magical wonders, like this portal key! I don't know if it contains magic, but I'm gonna study all I can, and find a way back to you." Luz glanced to the side and watched as King scurried into her room and hugged her left leg fiercely. "A-And look! I have friends to help me out."
Luz lifted her leg and showed King to the camera. The little demon looked at the camera and defiantly proclaimed, "I'm never letting you go! You got sucked into another, another world! You're never returning to the Human Realm!"
The Latina chuckled nervously and quickly said, "He doesn't mean that."
"YES, I DO!"
Luz managed to shake off her little friend and went around the house recording the rest of the inhabitants of the Owl House and giving some explanation as to who they each are. Once she was done, Luz returned to her room, alone, and set the camera back on the table.
"Also, there's something else. Apparently, there's a new Kamen Rider here on the Boiling Isles. She appeared while I was…away…in another-another world. Oh, and while I was there, I meant some new friends! It was a world filled with walking, talking frogs and newts! And the friends I met there, they were human, two human girls! They were a year younger than me, but it was exciting for more than one reason. I found out that they were Kamen Riders too, and together we teamed up to beat a super monster that wanted to conquer both worlds!"
Luz wondered if she should mention Tsukasa and the fact that the Legendary Rider could've taken her back home. In the end, she decided not to, remembering that the Phantoms could multiply in the Demon Realm and eventually find their way to the Human Realm.
"I managed to find a way back here, but that's all I could manage. Oh, and about the two girls I met! The first one is Anne Boonchuy, she's Thai American, and, just between you and me, she's kinda hot. Ahem!" Luz shook her head. "Uh, anyway, the other girl is named Marcy Wu, a Chinese American girl, she's really cute and super smart, probably the smartest person I've ever met. She's a total anime and Rider nerd like me! And she has a crush on Anne. If I could, I would've acted as her wingman and helped those two along. I wonder what their ship name would be? I'm thinking MarcAnne!"
Luz giggled at the thought, her mind still wondering about her friends in the other world.
"We might be from the same Earth, so, mom, if you can, please try and contact their parents, I'm sure they're just as worried as you probably are. Again, there's a high probability that we are from the same Earth, but we could just as easily be from two separate universes. So, you might find them there. They said they lived in Los Angeles, so check Facebook and Twitter to see if they're there."
A determined look befell Luz as she continued.
"I don't know when I'll be able to come back home, but hopefully, it will be once I've defeated all the Phantoms on the Boiling Isles. I can't risk them coming over and hurting people in our world. So, Mom, please don't be scared. I'm growing more and more every day, and I'm gonna do my best to defeat all the Phantoms and get home to you safe and sound. Te quiero, Mamá. Te lo prometo, regresaré a casa pronto (I love you mom. I promise you; I'll be back home soon)."
Luz ended the recording there and tried to send it to her mother. Unfortunately, with the destruction of the portal, there was no way for any of Luz's text messages to reach her mother in the Human Realm. It was depressing, even though she practically ran away and into the Demon Realm, she at least liked that she could text with her mother back and forth. Even though she was lying about where she was. It wouldn't be long before the summer camp ended, and her mother was definitely going to start worrying when she found out from the camp that she never arrived.
She'll probably think I was kidnapped…I don't know which is worse, her thinking that I was kidnapped or mom thinking that I ran away because she thinks I hated her for sending me to that camp. I mean, I was a little angry about it. But I could never hate her for that. She's put up with a lot of my weirdness, and even stood by me when I realized I was bisexual. I couldn't ask for anyone better for a mother.
"LUZ!" Eda's shouted.
The Latina got up and walked to the window, when she looked down, she saw Eda and Lilith in a wagon, ready to head into town.
"Time to bring these bad boys to market!"
Lilith, who was sitting in the driver's seat, groaned in annoyance as she brushed off some feathers from her clothes. "Eda, do you own anything that isn't covered in feathers?"
"I had to deal with a curse for thirty years, so I think you can handle a few feathers."
"Coming, Eda!" Luz called out.
Out of everything that was going on, the one thing that still had her baffled was the appearance of this Kamen Rider Heka. From what she had seen of the news footage, her debut battle was…less than stellar. But it seemed that she made a huge comeback. Her fighting style was a bit rough, but it worked. It wasn't like Luz didn't expect it, at least to a degree. She was wondering if a Secondary Rider would appear, but the question was, who was Heka?
I don't remember hearing that anyone other than me survived the Sabbath.
"It is strange. Perhaps one of my brethren had tracked down a Gate that we missed, and brought them into despair, but somehow, the Gate might've found the strength of hope to do as you did and seal their Phantom."
I mean, that is possible. But then, how did they get their Driver and rings? Mr. Haruto helped me create my Style rings, and he was the one who downloaded his fighting knowledge into my mind and gave me a copy of himself in my head. Do you think he managed to come back and help someone else?
"Judging from his condition the last time we saw him; I don't think he could manage another entry into this world. That Tsukasa is another matter entirely, though. I would urge caution when we encounter this Heka. There's no telling if this is the work of the mortal, Belos. Remember, he only sees us as useful for destroying the Phantoms, if he managed to find a way to create his own Rider then…"
Then there's nothing really stopping him from coming after us.
The residents of the Owl House rolled into town, and the moment they did, they could already tell things were changing. It seemed as if the Emperor had used the recent Phantom attack to do some redecorating. There was a large stone statue of Emperor Belos erected in the middle of the square, along with an increase in Coven Scouts and the Conformatorium Guard. People would assume it was all due to the increase in Phantom attacks, the Emperor doing his best to keep the peace and protect his subjects.
But Luz and Eda saw it differently, after what happened at the Petrification Ceremony, Eda and Luz didn't take anything the Emperor did at face value. They knew something was up, problem is, they didn't know if it was worse than what the Phantoms were up to. They stopped the wagon and got off, Eda took a bag full of the creatures that had bounties on them and slung them over her shoulder as they walked to the collection station.
Along the way, Luz couldn't help but comment, "Wow, the Emperor is really taking over."
"Unfortunately, I've started to notice it more. Ever since the attack a couple of days ago, and with Witch being away, it's had people on edge. So, he's using this as an opportunity to step up his control. Of course, I'm trying to be civil about this." As they walked, Eda saw a demon who was decked out in propaganda paraphernalia, all geared towards obeying Belos. As a sign of her civility, Eda kicked the demon hard and sent him flying a few feet. "See, civil."
The group eventually made it to the bounty collection area and placed the bag on the scale. The demon running the booth then said, "Tsk. Your payment." He then held up a single snail.
"A single snail?! Are you kidding me?! Half these guys are worth at least a thousand plus snails easy!" Eda complained.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I wasn't done yet." The demon then snapped the snail in half and placed one of the halves on the counter. "There ya go."
Eda slammed her hands on the counter and growled at the demon. "Are you kidding me?!"
"Sorry, but the rest is overhead. Logistical work and information finding on their locations isn't cheap, and we have to pick up the overhead cost somewhere. If you don't want that eating into your bounty, then go after ones that are worth more."
Luz furrowed her brow and added, "How can we do that when we can't because our ranks are low! We'd literally need to capture every single low ranked bounty just to cover your supposed 'overhead'!"
"Hey, I don't make the rules."
"You can't do this me. Do you know who I am?!" Eda exclaimed.
"Yeah, you're Eda the Owl Lady." The demon said with a shrug. "What are you gonna do? We all know your powerless."
Eda had had enough; she took a few steps back and drew a large spell circle. Everyone tensed up, the Emperor proclaimed that Eda's power had been taken by her curse, but they hadn't seen the Owl Lady perform magic since then, so no one was for sure that was the case. Once the circle was complete, Eda thrust her hand through it, but instead of a blast of magical energy, nothing happened. The circle fizzled out of existence, leaving Eda standing there. The people began to murmur amongst themselves, some actually felt sorry for Eda.
The Owl Lady sneered at the crowd and stated, "I don't need your pity!" Eda reached into her pocket and took out her own wanted poster. "I was the most wanted criminal for years! You should fear me!"
Then a passing garbage collector grabbed Eda's poster and threw it into his bin as he went on his merry way. Eda crossed her arms and growled in annoyance with her current situation.
Lilith decided to add her two snails into this and said, "Don't worry, sister. At least my image still commands respect and fear." She emphasized her point by drawing their attention to the recruitment poster on the wall that bared her image.
That is until another garbage collector came up and took a flamethrower to the poster, utterly incinerating it to ashes.
King noticed and said, "Ha, you're a traitor."
Lilith swiftly came down on the garbage collect. "What's going on?! This is anarchy! Who told you to do this?!
At that moment, three new posters magically flew out and slapped themselves against the wall. The new posters had the words "The Golden Guard" and "Join the Emperor's Coven Today!". At the center of the poster was the image of someone garbed in golden armor, a white cape and hood, and a gold-colored mask.
Luz grabbed one of the posters and curiously looked at it. "The 'Golden Guard'? Did you know him in the Coven, Lilith?"
Lilith grabbed the poster out of Luz's hand as she explained, "Unfortunately, I did. He always got special treatment because he was the 'genius teen prodigy'. But he's really just a brat! If he's in charge…vomit!"
The oldest Clawthorne sister balled up the poster and threw it. Only to have said poster magically unfurl itself and then boomerang back, slapping itself against Lilith's face. Lilith growled and tried to rip off the poster, but in the end just gave up and walked back to the wagon.
Luz could see that Eda's spirits were down, she was hoping that these captured creatures would yield more, and the added humiliation of not being able to use magic just added salt to the wound. The Latina perked up as she side hugged Eda and said, "Hey, I know! What we need is a confidence boost. Why don't we take on the biggest bounty we can find? It'll be great!"
"You forget our rank is low," said Eda.
"I think they'll think twice about that once we haul in something big! C'mon!" Luz ran over to the bounty board, ironically named "Greg's List". "Hmm. Lost Cerberus, no. Witch cackling lessons? Uh, maybe not today. Aha!" Luz grabbed one of the bounty posters and held it up for Eda to see. "There's something called a 'Selkidomus' ravaging boats up and down the coast. We'll be on a high-seas adventure!"
Eda crossed her arms and thought for a moment before saying, "Hmm…no. We gotta keep a low profile while my powers are weakened. And we can't risk you using up your own power in case of Phantoms. So, for right now, we need fast cash. How about this guy?!"
Luz looked at the poster that Eda had pointed to and deadpanned. "'The Abominable Cutie Pie'? And he's only worth six-hundred snails."
"No, no, no. I hear it's very dangerous!" She assured. "And look, there he is!"
Eda pointed to the creature in question. It looked like a tiny cartoon pig, with a bat beanie, and a pair of bat wings on its back, holding a lollipop, wearing a shirt that exposed its belly, and a pair of shorts. Cutie Pie started waddling away, and then climbed up the statue of Emperor Belos and declared, "You'll never catch me!"
Luz sighed and went after him; she scaled the statue with ease and prepared herself for some kind struggle. But then Cutie Pie said, "You did it! You caught me!" before falling forward and into Luz's hands. King joined her on the statue and looked at the creature, having a deadpan expression that matched Luz's.
I take it back, THIS is pathetic.
"Agreed."
While she was up there, Luz and King overheard Eda talking down below.
Eda was packing up some supplies as she said, "Things aren't looking great, Lily. This bounty hunting stuff isn't putting food on the table."
Lilith responded to Eda, but with the poster still covering her face it only came out as intelligible mumbles.
Yet, somehow, Eda still understood her sister. "I know Luz could handle the bigger bounties with her magic and other magic. But what if those Phantoms use it as an opportunity to attack her? Or what if she hurts herself, before I could use my magic to help her, or get her to help, but without it, there's just too much risk right now. And with the Emperor's goon squad poking around, I'm sure they're just waiting for one slip up to come after her."
Lilith spoke again, but it was muffled.
"I know she's gotten stronger, but that's not a guarantee. What if the Emperor decides he doesn't want to take the risk that she will get stronger than him? I mean, according to Luz, she knocked him on his ass. Landed a kick right in his face. And now she has another one of those forms. That's a threat that even he can't ignore for long, and this Heka thing, how do we know she's not with Belos, his answer to Witch? No, if we want things to go well, we can't mess up, not even once." Eda explained.
Lilith sighed and spoke again, this time it sounded more like a question.
Eda shook her head. "No apple blood. I spent the money on griffin eggs for Luz. There's not a lot she can digest here, so I make sure to have her favorites around."
After that conversation, Eda and Lilith headed off to collect what they could.
Cutie Pie sniffled after hearing all of that and said, "That's rough buddy."
King, in response, snatched the lollipop out of the creature's hand and slapped him on the back, sending Cutie Pie falling all the way down to the ground. The King of Demons glanced up at Luz, who was now biting her lip and trying to stave off the wave of sadness that was building up.
Luz dismounted the statue, stepping on Cutie Pie in the process and knocking him out. "This is awful. Eda wouldn't be in this situation if it weren't for me. Maybe it would be better if I never came here…"
King furrowed his brow and said, "No way, things have definitely gotten better since you came here!"
"King…?"
"Look, until you came along, all we did was just lie around the house, sell potions and junk to suckers. That was our routine, that, and evading the guards and causing trouble. But Eda had more or less given up on doing anything for herself, she was just going through the motions of living, with no purpose!" King twiddled his claws as he continued. "You've brightened up the Owl House, something that neither me nor Eda knew we needed until you came along. Plus, who knows what would've happened if you weren't here. This whole Phantom thing could've happened without you here, and we'd all be up a creek!"
Luz looked at her right hand then clenched it into a fist. "Thank you, King. I can't change the past, but I can still change the future! I'm gonna help Eda no matter what!" The little demon's words helped to ease her guilt, but still, it gnawed at her inside, and it wouldn't stop until Luz found a way to make this right for Eda.
With that determination locked in, Luz marched over to the Greg's List board and ripped off the poster for the Selkidomus. King climbed onto her shoulder and the two rushed to the far end of Bones Borough to the docks. Luz had seen this place from the air, but not up close like this. All manner of witches and demons were here, and all of them were either sailors or part of some marine faction of the Emperor's Coven. Luz followed the directions on the poster and found the dock where the ship and crew would be for the hunt.
It was there she found a large demon, with crap-like pincers for hands, and a salmon-colored fin on his back. He had a beak and two horns on his head as well. The demon seemed to be supervising the other sailors as they loaded supplies onto a large ship that looked like something out of a steampunk novel.
Luz walked closer to the demon and said, "Excuse me, are you the captain?"
The demon turned around and met Luz's gaze with a steely eyed glare. "Depends on who's askin'. Who might you be, human?"
"My name is Luz Noceda." Luz then slapped the poster down on top of a barrel. "And I want in on the Selkidomus hunt."
The captain eyed the human girl up and down, she was scrawny, but he could tell she had some muscle to her. "Think you can handle a hunt like this, Squirt? This ain't no pleasure cruse. We're after a wild beast on the Boiling Seas, you're responsible for yer own safety."
Luz crossed her arms and stated, "You have no idea what I can handle. Sir."
The captain smirked and said, "We'll see. Fine then, you're in." The captain reached into his jacket and pulled out a uniform, he tossed it towards Luz who managed to catch it. "Suit up and meet me on deck, I'll give ya yer assignments after."
"Yes, sir!"
Luz ran up the gangplank and onto the ship, not noticing that the captain nodded to someone looking down at him from the porthole on the ship. Once she was onboard, Luz was directed to a changing room, she let King off and went inside.
"Hope you know what you're doing, Luz," said King.
"Don't worry, we'll get this Selkidomus and haul in a big cash reward," said Luz confidently.
After a minute in the changing room, Luz came out wearing a pale tan shirt, navy blue pants, and had a bandanna wrapped around her head that had a white fish mark on it. "Now I'm officially a salty sea dog!"
"Hey, I take offense to that, I'm not salty." A passing by crew member said, who happened to look like a dog.
"S-Sorry, it was a figure of speech! I'm sure you're very nice!" Luz quickly apologized.
After that little incident, King and Luz returned to the top deck, seeing how it was abuzz with activity. The captain came walking up the gangplank and said, "Alright, lads and lassie, we're set to hunt the Selkidomus! All hands prepare to shove off!"
"Aye, Aye!" the crew cried.
Luz ran up to the captain and asked, "Captain, what's my assignment?!"
"Salty, name's Captain Salty. For right now, you can just sit in that corner. I can tell ya don't have any sailin' experience, so stay out of the way of the crew until we're out into open waters," said Salty.
Luz sighed. "Yes, sir, Captain Salty."
Despite this, Luz couldn't help but be a little excited, this was the first time she was going to sail out onto the Boiling Seas. The crew got everything ready, pulling up the gangplanks and untying the mooring lines. The steam engine for the boat was loaded with coal, making the smokestacks bellow, and a moment after, the ship's horn sounded off, letting everyone in the area know they were pulling out.
"All back full," ordered Salty.
The ship went into reverse as they drifted back and away from the dock.
"Turn to port, and then all ahead full!"
The ship turned about ninety degrees to the left, and once its bow was pointed towards the open sea, it launched forward. Now the hunt could begin. Salty nodded at the work his crew and headed inside to the captain's quarters.
"The crew is ready and we're on our way to the Selkidomus, sir," said Salty.
The chair slowly spun around and sitting in the captain's chair was none other than the Golden Guard himself. "Alright then, let's go bag us a Selkidomus."
