A/N: The Owl House may've finished for now, and there may still be more content to come from Dana Terrance and the OH Crew later in the future. But in the meantime, I shall provide us with Amphibia and Owl House goodness! In the form of a Kamen Rider crossover, anyway.
So, in order to provide myself with ample time to pump out these "episodes" as much as possible, I will be releasing one chapter of for this story and the Amphibia Calamity Riders fic I'm writing every Saturday around 12:00 pm. If I manage to get ahead of schedule, then I'll release more on other dates.
First: Let me take a moment to address some things. I know Dana and her crew are finishing up, or have already finished, working on the "Season 3" of the Owl House (effing Disney execs), and there's a good chance that I will finish this fic before S3 is released, and I really don't feel like leaving this story in limbo for however long it takes for S3 to come out.
So, bearing that in mind, I will be creating my own ending for the series or in this case for this fic. Will it be canon? Hell no. Might there be elements of it in the actual canon show? It's possible, stranger things have happened. I'll be working with some fan theories and some of my own to fill in the gaps and create my ending. So, on the day that S3 does come out, don't hold it against me.
Second: After watching all of S2, some of the story elements of S2 don't mesh too well with my current track. Thusly, I will be handling this in three arcs. We're currently still in the first arc, the Phantoms Arc, the next will be the Day of Unity Arc, and lastly, the Collector Arc.
And just so you know, I WILL give us the beach/pool episode that Disney denied us! Take that! HAHA!
The hiatus is over everyone, now...stay tuned!
Latissa, located near the armpit of the Titan, a place that is under the control of the Emperor's Coven. Some Scouts were busy patrolling the streets, but it was nothing more than the usual roughhousing on the streets, and the occasional fools who were too drunk on hard Apple Blood. But tonight, was different. Tonight, two particular Scouts received an urgent request to look into an incident regarding a few witches turning up injured in one area of the city, and it was not the normal kind of injuries they were expecting.
While some were thrown around, tossed like ragdolls, and ended up with some broken bones, all had one thing in common. They were in a comatose state, neither living nor dead, just empty and blank husks of their former selves. It was horrifying to say the least, and it was not as if the Coven Scouts have not seen their fair share of crazy things and disturbing events, but this felt different.
The two Scout were heading to an abandoned factory, one that once was used to make ship parts, but the company went out of business, and the property was, for now, up for auction. But events have been occurring nearby, and in the facility. It had given the place a bad reputation, and made potential buyers weary of purchasing it and making it into something else. So, both for safety and profit reasons, these two Scouts were sent to investigate, and put the rumors to rest.
"I can't believe we were sent on this boring assignment," said the first Scout.
"C'mon Alida, it's an easy assignment, a milk run. We just go, check the place out, come back and report it all clear," said the second Scout.
Alida groaned as she replied, "I know, Bretta, I know. I just wish they could've picked two other Scouts to do this. It's our freakin' anniversary, and I had plans!"
Bretta smiled under her mask and bumped Alida. "Aww, Alida, I didn't know! You should've told me!"
"You weren't supposed to know, I was going to surprise you once our shift was over, but then they extended it to have us do this crap. Like we don't have better things to do! Ugh, I'd love to give the Captain a piece of my mind!"
Bretta placed her left hand on Alida's shoulder in an attempt to quell her lover's rage. "Hey, hey, it's all good. We're getting paid double for this job, and overtime! We can really do something nice for our anniversary with that much money! Soooo, why not milk it? Every thirty minutes were out here, means more snails for us, and as Scouts we must be thorough in our investigation to protect the citizens. Right, hun?"
Alida smirked under her mask as she reached out and hooked her right arm around her wife. "Ha! Babe, have I ever told you how much I love you?!"
"Plenty, but I don't mind hearing more."
The Scout couple eventually made it to the factory. The perimeter was fenced off, with barbed wire surrounding the upper parts to prevent anyone from climbing it. Although, to be honest, since many witches had staffs, it was not as if intruders couldn't just fly over it. The main gate had chains wrapped around the iron bars, and a thick padlock. Upon first glance there was nothing showing that it had been messed with, but that could be an illusion spell at work.
Bretta had a penchant for more complex and intricate spells, so she drew a spell circle, and cast her own spell to try and disable any weaved illusions around it. When her circle struck the gate, there was no reaction at all.
"Well, if it's the work of kids, they didn't come through here. There's no illusion spell on the gate." Bretta cast another spell, which made the gate highlight any signs of tampering. "And it doesn't seem like anyone has tried to cut it and mend it back together, everything is original."
"I swear, if this really is just some punk kids trying to use this place as some sort of gang hideout, I'm beatin' their asses," Alida threatened.
Bretta sighed. "I really hope you don't make that your go-to when we have kids."
"Tch, you kiddin'?! I'm going to make sure our kids know for damn sure that they're in a for world of hurt if I catch them doing some stupid crap like this!"
Bretta rolled her eyes, despite her wife's aggressive manner, she was really a gentle woman when it came to those she loved. She had no doubt that if they did have kids, she would be stern, but very loving towards them. Guess that'll make me the fun parent.
After confirming no entry from the front, Bretta and Alida continued their investigation by walking the perimeter of the fence, checking for any breaches in the fence. They arrived at the same conclusion, whatever was causing the trouble might not be other witches or demons, it could be a wild beast that wandered in from the forest. Their suspicions might've been confirmed, as when they made it to the back, they saw a huge hole had been ripped into the fence. The metal had been twisted and ripped apart as if it were made of cardboard, a mangled mess.
Bretta and Alida cast a small light spell, just enough to allow them to see the ground. And that's when they noticed the large hoofprints that were left in the dirt.
"Holy Titan, these are huge!" Bretta exclaimed.
"A foot wide, maybe bigger…" Alida got down on one knee and poked her finger into the print, it sunk about to her knuckle, but what was worrying was that her fingertip could not touch the bottom. "It's deep, this sucker must be big."
"What could've made this?" Bretta asked.
"…I hate to say this, but I don't know…"
That worried Bretta, her wife was originally in the Beast Keeper's Track at Glandus, and she was the Top Student of that track. She could identify many different creatures by their tracks alone, but the fact that Alida could not place these particular hoofprints, it was a bit nerve wracking to hear that.
"Maybe we should call for backup?" Bretta suggested.
"Hold on, let's not go that route, yet. I can't identify them, but I can tell that their old, some weeks at least. Whatever made them could be gone," said Alida.
"Or it could still be in there!"
Alida was not about to dismiss that theory, from here the ground transitioned into concrete, so the trail was lost. For all she knew the creature could still be in there, and her specialty was Beast Keeping, so of the two of them, she was the one best qualified to go in and wrangle whatever it was that had taken the factory as its home.
"Look, I'll go in and check things out, cast an illusion around yourself and hide out here until I get back," Alida instructed as she made to go in.
"No way!" Bretta reached out and grabbed her wife by the arm. "If you're going in, then I am, too!"
"B, I don't know what we're up against, something bad could be in there."
"Then even more reason for me to go with you! We've been friends since we were little, we became girlfriends at Glandus, and we got married right after joining the Emperor's Coven! We've always watched each other's backs, and I'm not stopping now!"
Alida sighed in defeat, her wife had a point, and honestly, she did not feel right just leaving her out here. Bretta was a capable witch, and good in a fight, but who knew what this animal could do. "Alright, alright…jeez, you really know how to twist my arm."
"I wouldn't be a good wife if didn't know how to make you do what I want from time to time," said Bretta, her mask hiding a cheeky smile.
Not certain that's something to be completely proud of.
With that set, the two Scouts walked through the mangled gate and headed towards the factory. Bretta cast an illusion spell to make them invisible, while Alida cast a spell to keep their presence hidden by masking their scent. Alida knew most creatures could sense danger by scent and sound, they could be quiet for the most part, and with their scent masked, they would practically be nonexistent to whatever was calling this factory its home.
Alida cast another spell to grant herself and Bretta bestial night vision, that way they did not have to use light spells in order to see in the darkness. They made their way to a metal shutter door that was used to unload and load materials and product, and it had been ripped apart. What made this particularly menacing was how big the hole was. Bretta was about five-six, and Alida was kinda bulky and stood about six-two, but this hole in the door was at least three feet taller than Alida.
The Scout couple decided to press on, while this was unnerving, they needed to confirm if the creature was still inside or not before they bothered to call for backup. Plus, if this really was a beast, then the best Beast Keeping Scout this side of Latissa was already here. The two kept going in, there were conveyor belts, smelting pots, furnaces, and left behind crates filled with parts and other things that the previous company did not bother to pack up. Cobwebs filled the gaps in certain spots on the walls, and between the crates. A fine layer of dust was on everything inside, some of it wafting through the air, the moonlight made it sparkle as it reflected the light.
Something was off about this place, they felt it the moment they entered the facility. A kind of ominous, foreboding feeling that made them shiver in fear. So far, they could see no signs that something was in there, you would think something that made a hole that big would not be hard to spot. But with all the machinery and abandoned crates, the creature could be ducking behind them and lying-in wait.
Alida raised her right fist up, signaling for Bretta to halt. The Beast Keeping Scout walked over to a wall and saw four long claw marks on the wall, deep grooves that were cut into the cement.
Bretta looked around as well and noticed that there was some signs of struggle, as the dust around one area of the factory was disturbed.
"AAAAAAAAHHHHH!"
Alida and Bretta snapped their heads up, hearing a scream echo through the entire factory. The two Scouts could not tell where it emanated from and were frantically looking in every direction to pinpoint any sign of movement.
"NO! PLEASE, NO MORE! AAAAH! AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
Bretta spotted movement to her right, she signaled silently to Alida and the two of them rushed in that direction. However, the closer they got to where the screams were coming from, the greater their fear grew. It was if every cell in their bodies were crying out for the both of them to run away, but their training and their determination to save whoever was in danger kept them going forward.
The two stopped when they saw a light shine from behind a piece of machinery, the shadow cast upon the wall made both women gasp in horror as they saw the silhouette of the creature and their victim. The creature seemed to have their arm inside of the victim, and after a moment, the light faded. What followed next was some crunching sounds, the sounds of something eating. Bretta put her hands over her mouth to stifle her own scream, while Alida gritted her teeth and bawled up her fists, trying to keep herself from flying into a panic for Bretta's sake.
The crunching sounds finally stopped, and it was silent. Deathly silent.
But then, something appeared, bony white claws peeked over the machine, their tips digging into the metal as if it were nothing. Two glowing red eyes peeked from over the machine, eyes that seemed to be staring right at them.
No, there's no way it can see us! My cloaking spell is perfect! Bretta thought.
It can't know we're here, we're so quiet, and our scents are masked! Alida thought.
Just then the creature opened its mouth, revealing a red glowing maw as it released an ear splitting, shrieking, ungodly roar that buffeted the two Scouts. The moment it did, Alida and Bretta were struck with pure fear, fear enough to make them lose concentration as their spells fell apart, revealing the two of them, and unfortunately, they lost their night vision. The creature rose higher, but its body was covered in shadow, making it hard for them to see what exactly it was.
"RUN!" Alida shouted as she grabbed her wife's hand and immediately bolted.
The creature smiled sinisterly as it moved with a speed that was unnatural for something of its size. Alida spotted its glowing eyes off to her right, she formed a spell circle and fired a mana bolt right that way. But the monster galloped away as the mana bolt struck something else and exploded on impact. Bretta now spotted it on her left, and did the same, firing her own mana bolt at it. But once again, the monster's speed was too great, and it evaded the attack.
The door was just up ahead, they just needed to get through there and they could have more room to fight, and a better chance at getting away and calling for backup. Alida looked behind her and saw that the creature was gaining on them, spotting two more pairs of eyes now glowing in the darkness right below the first set. Was there more than one of them?
"I'm sorry, Bretta!"
"What?!"
Alida's Coven Scout uniform began to rip apart, and her mask shattered as she revealed her transformation into a gray furred, icy blue eyed, lupine-like beast.
"KEEP RUNNING!" she roared
Bretta was not given the chance to react as Alida chucked her wife right through the hole in the door. The Scout hit the ground, face first, shattering her mask, and making her bounce once before landing on her back. The witch looked up with her green eyes filled with tears, her long crimson hair flowed out now that her hood was down, and her freckled face contorted into one of both incredulity and sadness.
"ALIDA YOU IDIOT!"
Sounds of battle echoed through the dark hole in the wall, accompanied by the snarling of a wolf woman, the ungodly sounds of the monster, and the destruction of property. Bretta did what she could as she drew a spell circle and summoned a crow phone.
"THIS IS BRETTA WISERMEN! WE HAVE A SITUATION AT THE FACTORY ON CRAVEN ROAD! NEED IMMEDIATE BACKUP! WE ARE CURRENTLY ENGAGING SOME UNKNOWN CREATURE! ONE POSSIBLE CASUALTY! MY PARTNER IS ENGAGED WITH THE CREATURE!"
{WHAT?! SERIOSULY! ALL COVEN SCOUTS, CONVERGE ON THEIR LOCATION, IMMEDIATELY!} The Captain announced on all channels.
Bretta looked back at the door, she was going back in, the heck what Alida said, she was going to save her wife. But before she could make a move, all sounds ceased. It was once again eerily quiet. Bretta's heart rate quickened as fear gripped it, Alida was strong, she had gone head-to-head with many different beasts and had the scars to prove it, but that thing…it was unnatural.
The witch woman slowly edged closer to the door, gulping as she called out, "A-Alida…?"
There was no response. Bretta felt like crying, but she needed to live, that's the whole reason Alida threw her out of the factory, she wanted to her survive.
"I'm coming back with help, Alida!" Bretta turned around. "Just hold on until–!"
Suddenly, a long black arm stretched out of the darkness, and with its five bony white claws, wrapped them around Bretta's head. The witch woman's pupils shrank to pinpricks as she screamed, being reeled back into the factory like a fish on a hook and disappearing into the shadows.
Luz was at her wits end with everything. After they returned from the mysterious island where King was born, Luz had decided to pour her time into figuring out a way to create a portal back to the Human Realm, or at the very least, locate a place on the Boiling Isles that could act as a portal.
But all the books she had read had nothing for her. One week, and nothing. Thankfully the Phantoms were not active in that time frame, which was good as it allowed Luz to concentrate and finding a way back home. Or she would be thankful if her efforts were baring any fruit. The poor girl had exhausted herself to the point that she fell asleep on the kitchen island, her head lying atop a stack of books she had already combed through. She was sound asleep, until Eda woke her up.
"BEANS!" Eda cursed.
"WAAAH!" Luz exclaimed as she was startled awake and fell over.
"We ran out of Apple Blood. Gonna have to make a run to the market later." Eda crossed her arms in annoyance, but then turned her attention to her apprentice. "Still no luck with the portal research?"
Luz groggily got back up and sighed, "None. I was up all night, reading every book, tome, notepad, and tea leaf!" The Latina punctuated her point by presenting Eda with a cup full of tea leaves, which strangely enough took the form of a person shrugging its shoulders. "But nothing explains how to make a portal to the Human Realm!"
Eda sighed in dismay. "I wish I could help you, kid. My door was already pretty old when I found it. It was just buried in the ground. Almost like someone didn't want anyone finding it."
Luz raised a curious eyebrow. "Buried? For how long?"
"Couldn't tell ya that either," Eda shrugged.
"Okay, so, how long did you have the door?"
"Well…"
"AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!"
Luz and Eda heard Lilith's screams and rushed to the living room. When they arrived, they gasped, finding Lilith on the floor, her hands and arms were slowly morphing into the Owl Beast.
The older Clawthorne sister feebly reached out towards her younger sister and Luz and said, "Help…! Me…!"
Eda immediately went to the couch and pouched an elixir from behind one of the cushions. She quickly went to her big sister and had her lie back as she fed her the concoction. "Calm down, Lily. Just calm down. The curse acts stronger when you're stressed."
The effects of the elixir were, thankfully, immediate. The feathers on her arms shrunk until they disappeared, and her nails had returned to normal, no longer the jagged claws they were a moment ago. Lilith took a moment to gather herself and said, "That was…was horrible! How have you managed with this curse all these years?!"
Eda smirked a little as she stood up and brought Lilith up with her. "It's been hard, I won't lie. But splitting the curse between us seems to have weakened it, enough that the elixirs are working again, thank Titan."
"That's a relief." Lilith breathed a sigh of relief, but that was quickly halted when she saw that her left hand was missing. "EEEH!"
Luz gasped as well upon seeing the missing appendage.
Eda looked down and saw that it was still on the floor, she bent down, picked it up, and reattached to Lilith's arm. "Oooh, yeah, sorry, forgot to mention that. It's a little side effect of the curse. It's actually kind of fun once in a while. Now, then, don't worry, I've stashed elixirs all over the house!"
The Owl Lady went around the room, showing off the different places where she had emergency stashes of elixir. Some under the cushions of the sofa, some behind potted plants, and in trunks.
Huh, so that's why the couch felt lumpy sometimes, thought Luz.
"Anytime you're feeling 'feathery', just help yourself to one of these bad boys," said Eda as she gracefully walked behind Luz and picked out another elixir, which was somehow hidden in her hoodie.
"Okay, how did she even do that?" La Lechuza asked.
Eda magic.
"About as good an explanation as any."
Lilith felt the guilt come upon her, again. "I'm so sorry, Edalyn…I've made you suffer for all these years…and for something that I thought I wanted, to follow someone I thought was worth following…and it turns out that it was all a lie. I did this to you for nothing…I made you suffer needlessly."
Eda came up to Lilith and smacked her on the back. "Hey, none of that pity party nonsense. Besides, misery loves company. And if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask." The younger sister then handed her older sister an elixir.
Lilith cupped the bottle like it was a stuffed bear, something that gave her security in this crisis she created for the both of them. Before Lilith could say anything, Eda walked out of the house, with Luz right behind her. But the young human stopped for a moment and looked up at her.
"Eda's right, you don't have to go through this alone, we're here for you. And I am, too," said Luz with a smile.
Lilith smiled back and replied, "Thank you, Luz."
The eldest Clawthorne sister walked to the couch and laid down on it, she still lamented what she did to her little sister, wishing to the Titan that she could take it back. But there was no undoing what has already been done, at least not by her hand. No one had been able to cure her sister, the implications of what she did to Eda did not fully hit her until after Lilith got home, when her mother started consulting all the different Covens to try and cure Eda.
Lilith did not worry too much, she had thought it would only last a day, the Owl Beast transformation was disturbing to say the least, but she figured it would only be for that day. But a day turned into two, and then two turned into four, and then four turned into a week, and a week into a month. All that time their mother kept consulting different Covens, but none of them had the cure that Eda needed. She hid her guilt, she hid it well, still playing the role of a studious big sister.
But she knew, she knew that this was her fault, and if her mother and father ever found out, they'd disown her. And Eda, she would never forgive her. At least that's what she thought at first, and it was not as if she felt worthy of forgiveness, even now. Lilith remembered making a vow that she would rise in the ranks of the Emperor's Coven, she would become the most talented, most crafty, and strongest witch among the ranks, and rise up to the top to become the Head of the Emperor's Coven. She did it, she did all of that, and when she spoke her request to the Emperor, he, at first, declined to remove it. But about a month and a half later, Belos had called her into his throne room and told her that Eda had become a Wild Witch, and that, despite her use of Wild Magic, she had talent.
That's when he made the deal with her, if Lilith could capture her younger sister and bring her into the Coven, he would rid Eda of the curse forever. Such was his power, or so he said. But it was all just one big lie, he used her just to get Eda's portal door, that's all he wanted, he could have cared less about her curse.
If that's all he wanted, why did he have to do all of that? Why did he make me believe that it was all to cure her? What's worse, I know he can do it. When Eda was in her Owl Beast form, he used his power to bring her true personality and mind to the surface, overwriting the curse. Belos could surely cure Eda in full if he wanted to.
Lilith's eyes drifted towards the window where she knew her little sister and her human apprentice were.
Luz Noceda, your magic, your power, I know it scares Belos. You managed to put a scratch on someone who everyone on the isles believes is invincible, but you proved that you are his equal. And you've only gotten stronger since then, I don't doubt your final evolution in power will put you far above Belos, and on that day, I feel as if you will have the power to rid Eda and myself of this curse. That…That is my hope.
Back outside, Eda was smirking down at Luz. "I'm happy you've forgiven Lily, kid. It means a lot to me."
Luz rubbed the back of her head as she said, "At first, it wasn't easy. Not after everything that happened. But I've realized that holding onto a grudge doesn't do anything but hurt yourself and the person seeking forgiveness."
Eda got Luz in a headlock and began mussing her hair. "And you're too much of a goody-goody to hold onto a grudge forever, admit it!"
The human girl laughed as she struggled out of her mentor's grip. "Okay, okay! Yes, I'm a goody-goody who can't stay mad at people for too long!"
Eda released Luz. "Yeah, I knew it. Anyway, as I was saying, I've had the portal door for years. And like I said, I originally found it buried in the dirt. Never figured out why it was there, who made it, or if it even came from here. I just kept it to myself."
"Why would not tell anyone?" Luz asked.
The Owl Lady chuckled as she asked, "What? Suddenly curious about my past?"
Luz put on a serious face as she retorted, "Always. Always curious."
Of course, she is. "Well…I may've been using it to…hide from someone."
That surprised Luz, who could Eda be hiding from – other than the Emperor's Coven and Belos – that she would need to hide in the human realm? "Who exactly did you need to hide from?"
"PROBABLY MEEEE~"
Suddenly a tornado kicked up out of nowhere, and at the top of this tornado was a large hawk that seemed to be the originator of it.
"Magic bird tornado?!" Luz exclaimed.
The tornado continued to spiral and as it died down, the wall of wind revealed the true originator of the gust. She was an older witch woman, with pale skin similar to Eda and Lilith, spikey gray hair, a pair of pointed glasses, a pair of gold-colored earrings, and a talisman with a strange symbol around her neck. She wore a purple-colored dress, with black accents and gray fur lining on the front, and on this witch's right wrist was the sigil of the Beast Keepers Coven. She also bore a striking resemblance to Eda.
The older witch woman dismissed her staff and happily called out, "Hello little witchlet!"
As the older witch rushed towards Eda, the Owl Lady held out her left hand and pressed against the other witch's head, preventing her from trying to hug Eda.
"Gwendolyn."
Gwendolyn stopped her struggling and chuckled at hearing the name. "Ha, are we still on that? I'm your mother, call me 'Mom'!"
"MOM?!" Luz exclaimed in shock, and in tandem with Lilith who threw open the window in an even greater amount of shock than Luz.
"Oh, it is so good to see you again!" Gwendolyn quickly grabbed Eda by the cheeks and made her look her in eye, with the older witch examining her. "How are you feeling? Are you eating well?"
Eda wrenched herself from her mother's, surprisingly, strong grip and responded, "I'm fine, Gwendolyn. Still kicking, as you can see."
Gwendolyn glanced to her left and saw Luz, that's when she whispered, "My little witchlet, is that your daughter? And is she human?"
Eda blushed up to her pointy ears and hiss whispered, "NO! She's not my kid-kid! Luz is a human who I'm looking after!" Eda did regard Luz as her daughter, but she was not about to admit that in front of her mom.
"Oh, well, no judgement from me dear if she is. I was just curious is all. Anyway, I heard all about the Petrification Ceremony, I believe me a have a lot of strong words for that Belos," Gwendolyn stated as she crossed her arms.
"…This woman believes she could honestly talk down to Belos, when we only managed to scratch him?"
Never underestimate a mother's wrath, Lala. Never.
"That was oddly more ominous than it had any right to be…"
Lilith burst through the front door and rushed up behind Eda as she cried out, "Mother! You know, I was there, too."
Gwendolyn smiled as she looked up at her eldest daughter. "And hello to you too, sweet flea." Gwendolyn took a lock of Lilith's hair into her hands and examined it for a moment. "Oh, still dying your hair I see. Well, it's very sleek. Now, give me a moment with Edalyn, dear, it's important."
Lilith could not hide the disappointment on her face as she backed up and stood next to Eda.
"That's right, today I am about to complete a thirty-year long mission!" Gwendolyn proclaimed.
"Oh no…"
"Your mother has finally succeeded!"
"Here it comes…" Eda groaned as she pinched the bridge of her nose.
"Today I shall be curing your curse!" Gwendolyn stated as she summoned her staff and twirled it around with a dramatic flair.
Eda paused for a moment and said, "No thanks."
Luz, Lilith, and even La Lechuza were utterly flabbergasted when they heard her say that, and exclaimed in unison, "WHAT?!"
"I said, 'no thanks.' I've got my elixir system. I'm good," Eda stated.
Gwendolyn looked at her daughter in dismay. "B-But who knows what they put in those nasty concoctions!"
"Well, I was in the Potions Track back at Hexside, so, actually, I do know what's in them. And, ugh, what you look at the time!" Eda quickly grabbed her mother's staff from her hand and laid it out horizontally, letting it hover. She then quickly guided her mother onto the staff as she said, "I got a lot of stuff to do today so sad to see you go okay thanks byeeee~!"
Eda smacked the butt of Gwendolyn's staff, sending her mother flying into the sky.
The Owl Lady wiped her hands as she triumphantly smiled. "Moms. Am I right?"
Luz and Lilith could only just stand there, mouths agape, at what they just saw Eda do.
Lilith was the first one to regain her senses as she frustratingly shouted, "I haven't seen Mother in…forever! And she was handing you a cure on a silver platter!"
Luz was the next one to regain her senses as she marched up to Eda and more or less scolded her. "I'd kill to see my Mom right now! And you just yeeted yours into the sky!"
"Oh, calm down, both of you. Listen, she comes around every year toting a new 'cure' for my curse. But they never work! So, I am done getting my hopes up when it comes to her supposed 'cures'," Eda explained as she walked back into the house.
This new information hit Lilith hard. "Mother visits Eda…regularly?"
Luz glanced at her mentor as she and Lilith disappeared into the house, and then back to where Gwendolyn had been launched.
"Niña, I know that feeling. Do not get involved in their business."
"Lala it's not right, her mom's been searching for thirty years for a cure to Eda's curse. Those other times before may not have worked, but there's nothing saying that she might've found a definitive cure this time," said Luz.
"Ugh... ¿De verdad eres el entrometido más grande de este mundo? ¿Lo sabes bien? (Ugh…You really are this world's biggest busybody. You know that, right?)?"
"¡Sí! ¡Y orgulloso de ello, también! (Yep! And proud of it, too!)"
Luz ran after Gwendolyn, thankfully Eda did not yeet her mother that far as she landed about a yard from the house. Gwendolyn dismounted her staff and sighed sadly before turning around and walking off, it seems as if her daughter no longer cared whether or not she had a cure for her curse or not, all but given up on even finding a cure at all.
"Mrs. Clawthorne! Wait!" Luz cried out as she managed to catch Gwendolyn before she could leave. "I'm Luz, Eda's apprentice! I think what you're doing is sooo sweet! Eda can just be sooo….Eda, sometimes."
Gwendolyn smiled at the young human. "That's sweet of you, dear. Please, call me Gwen. But please, don't blame Edalyn. It was the curse that created the rift between us."
"I understand a bit of what you mean…" Luz held her left arm as she spoke, "Right now there's an actual rift between me and my Mom. I've lost the only way to go back to the Human Realm and I've been trying to find a way back ever since…"
Gwen raised her brow in curiosity. "The Human Realm. I wonder if…? My dear, I may know a way to fix both of our rifts!"
"You do?!" Luz asked excitedly.
"I've heard some information that might help you in your endeavors. Help me cure Eda's curse, and that information is yours," said Gwen.
This is it! Some real information about how to crossover into the Human Realm! "Yes, yes, yes, yes, YES! Where do we start?!"
Gwen took hold of the talisman around her neck and replied, "First, we'll need to consult someone very special."
"So, you've been studying under my Edalyn for the last few months?" Gwen asked.
"Eh…" Luz made a wavy motion with her right hand. "Yes, kinda sorta. She taught me how to do a light spell, which allowed me to find the first glyph, the Light Glyph. Then she took me to the Knee, and she taught me how to listen to the island, and with that, I learned my second, the Ice Glyph. Thanks to that, I was able to enter Hexside Academy, and now I get to study all the different types of magic."
"My, my, but I shouldn't be surprised. Edalyn always had an uncanny talent when it came to magic, and it seems Hexside has changed a bit since I or my daughters attended. I was not aware they were allowing students to learn multiple tracks."
"Principal Bump is really nice about that, it took a little convincing, but it's not only me. He's also allowed a few of my friends to learn multiple tracks, maybe there'll be more," said Luz in a hopeful tone.
Gwen reached over and mussed Luz's hair a bit. "You're quite the trailblazer aren't you. I'm starting to see why my daughter has taken a liking to you…You sure you're not my granddaughter?"
Luz blushed. "No, no, I'm really from the Human Realm, both human parents. Eda's…" The young Latina smiled. "Eda's like a second mom to me, just as much as my mentor."
"Well then, I'll take it either way. At the rate both of my daughters are going, you may be the closest thing I have to a granddaughter at this point. So, feel free to call me Nana Gwen," the older witch offered.
Luz practically squealed with excitement. "So, we're going to meet a curse expert? This is sooo rad!"
"Well, yes, after years of dealing with the 'Healing Coven,' I finally found someone who could offer me a cure," Gwen explained. "Ah, here we are."
Luz and Gwen arrived at a rockface, covered in roots and overgrowth. But Luz had learned that looks can be deceiving when it came to the Boiling Isles. Gwen walked closer to the rocks and raised her talisman to it. The symbol on it began to glow a bright green, and a moment after, the same symbol appeared on a slab of rock. That very same slab slid to the right and revealed a hidden cave entrance. Gwen nodded to Luz and the two entered.
Inside Luz was amazed to see the cavern filled with lit candles and strange golden ornaments that hung from the ceiling. Roots from the trees above coiled and found their home near the pond in the back, a pond that had a continuous waterfall flowing down into it. There were giant, amethyst-like crystals jutting from the ground in different areas, and at the center of this cave as an altar, with a man sitting upon it.
This man wore gray robes, had a white beard, and had four arms. His skin was purple in color, and he possessed a magenta gemstone at the top of his forehead. He had a large, turquoise colored beaded necklace around his neck, there was a smaller beaded necklace in his left lower arm, and in his right upper arm he held a wooden staff with the same magenta gemstone. Before him was a demon, a gremlin looking thing, whose eyes were swollen and covered in puss and boils.
"Please…help me…they're so itchy!" The demon begged.
The robed man, eyes shut, summoned a spell circle, and cast his magic upon the demon. The little demon was wrapped in a sphere of magenta light, and in a flash of that same light his eyes were freed from their malady. Luz's jaw dropped, she had not seen much healing magic, but what she saw was probably on par with what she could do with her Healing ring, maybe more. Gwen smiled, more confident than ever that she had chosen the right person to help her cure her daughter.
"It is done," said the man, eyes glowing bright white as his voice echoed.
The gremlin looking demon rose to his feet and touched his face, a smile forming as he proclaimed, "Boils, they're…they're gone! Thank you, Wortlop! Thank you!" With that, the gremlin demon ran out of the cave, happy as can be.
"That's Master Wortlop. He's a traveling curse expert who's perfected next-level healing magic," Gwen explained.
Luz could feel La Lechuza's feather's ruffling. What's wrong, Lala?
"I don't like this. Compared to some of the other magic I've seen from the inhabitants of this island, that was quite…pedestrian. If that is what passes as 'next-level healing magic,' then the future of sorcery for this world is going to be abysmal."
Lala, c'mon, it may look simply, but maybe it wasn't his good stuff. Maybe that demon's sickness was just not that bad enough for him to warrant his more powerful magic, thought Luz.
"Hmmm…be weary, Niña. That's all I'm saying."
Wortlop motioned for Gwen to come to him, the old witch hurriedly bolted for him, causing Luz to spin around, and made her have to catch Gwen's staff before it fell to the ground. "Gwendolyn, my pupil. Your aura is shining bright."
"Thank you, Master Wortlop. It took many months, but I was able to gather the sacred items you requested." Gwen drew a spell circle and produced a burlap sack bag, and from it she began taking out multiple items from it. "The copper egg from the Snowy Rib Cage, the silver dagger from the Swampy Toes, and the golden chalice from the desert of Palm Stings."
"Whoa…" Luz whispered.
"You're a dedicated mother, aren't you?"
Wortlop pressed the palms of both his lower right and left hands together. A magical aura flared from them, and once he opened them, a book materialized before him.
"Inside this tome is the healing ability you seek." Upon its appearance, the tome flew to Gwen, taking it carefully into her arms. "But keep it away from the eyes of non-believers, for many will be blinded by the power it holds."
"*cough*, *cough*, Carga completa de balines de buho. (Complete load of owl pellets.)"
Be nice.
"I understand," said Gwen with reverence. "I am in your debt, Master Wortlop!"
Sometime later, Gwen and Luz began their plan to cure Eda, and rid her of the Owl Beast once and for all. Eda was completely unaware, but the other residents of the Owl House were watching, particularly, King. Watching as Gwen hammered a sign into the ground, while Luz painted the words "Apple Blood" with an arrow pointing in an unknown direction. Gwen used her magic to levitate more signs while Luz followed quickly behind, the two of them disappearing further into the woods.
"Isn't it amazing, Francoise? If Eda's mom can just pop up, who says my Dad can't! Better get my huggin' arms ready," said King as he began stretching his arms, minding his stuffed bunny.
"HA! Yeah, good luck with all that dad stuff."
Currently, Lilith was lying on the couch, looking, and feeling miserable as she attempted to drown her sorrows in ice cream, the none screaming variety that did not threaten you. And from the looks of things, she was already on her second tub.
"Sometimes it doesn't matter how dutiful you are or successful you are. Parents just won't give you the time of day," said Lilith forlornly.
King dismissed Lilith's claims. "Don't listen to her, Francoise! My Dad won't be like that!"
"Right. Your mysterious father, who didn't even stick around to watch you hatch," Lilith replied mockingly. The former head of the Emperor's Coven sighed dejectedly. "Looks like you and I are in the same boat, King."
Could Lilith be right…? Could his father really not be looking for him? It has been eight years since he hatched, and you would think that he would have come back to check on him if he cared at all, or heck, found him by now. His likeness was on Eda's wanted poster, it would not be that hard to draw a conclusion that he was with Eda.
"Eh…"
Getting away from the crisis in progress, Luz was busy tying a few vines together as Gwen continued with the rest of the preparations.
"Yeeeeeaaaaahhh… Niña, I'm not certain about this."
Just have faith, Lala.
Just then Gwen came flying in with as her Palisman carried her in its claws. "Nice work, Luz. With Wortlop's tome and your ability to lure Eda out of the house, we'll be curing that curse in no time!"
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure she's always down for more Apple Blood. So, that Wortlop guy was really something. You're his pupil?" Luz asked.
"Oh, yes." Gwen drew a spell circle and dismissed the tome she was reading. "But first, I had to prove that I was worthy of his secrets. So, I spent the last year on a bunch of dangerous quests. And I didn't even get that many scars."
Gwen curled her right arm and showed rippling muscles and a few scars from her said quests.
"Cool! Also, dang, girl, your bicep game is ridiculous." Luz curled her arm, showing some muscle gain since her time as Witch. "Not quite close to yours. "
Gwen examined Luz's arm and dismissed her notion. "Oh, I don't know, you seem to have 'game' yourself there, dear. Whatever you're doing, keep it up."
That won't be too hard, thought Luz.
Just then they heard a twig snap in the forest.
"Oh, our signs must've worked! Come, let's hide!" Gwen urged.
Luz and Gwen took hurried up a nearby tree and took their positions on its large branch, watching from on high as Eda began tricking through the forest, following the signs that Luz had hand painted.
"Oh, baby, time to stock up on Mama's night juice," said Eda as she walked along.
Gwen summoned the tome, having it hover off to her right as she checked it for reference. "According to Wortlop's tome, we start by lowering the beast's defenses with special crystals. And they're supposed to be quite calming."
Suddenly, as Eda walked beneath a particular branch, several clear, and very sharp, crystals began raining down from above. The Owl Lady quickly danced around the falling shards, and even used her staff to block a few from impaling her.
"Whew…Knife season came early this year," Eda commented.
Just then she noticed a large shadow forming underneath her, she quickly looked up and yelled in shock as a huge, boulder sized crystal came careening down and struck the earth where Eda had stood. Thankfully, she dodged that one, too, but only by falling onto her back and widening her legs to create a gap so that the giant crystal did not crush her legs. And that's when the feathers floofed out.
"She's stressed!" Luz gasped as she opened her emergency fanny pack and took out an elixir.
Gwen, noticing what Luz was about to do, quickly reached out with her left hand and grabbed Luz by the wrist, stopping her from chucking the elixir.
"Oh, no, no, no. The texts say those feathers mean we're driving the beast out," Gwen explained as she thumbed through the tome.
"Oh…"
Gwen noticed the distressed look on her adopted granddaughter's face and gently reached out, patting her on the shoulder in order to comfort her. "Don't worry. After today, Eda will never have to drink those nasty little things again."
"Trust your gut, Niña."
…No, this could be our one shot at getting rid of Eda's curse for good.
"Alright, what do we do next?" Luz asked.
"Next, we're gonna put that beast on ice," said Gwen.
The old witch opened a bag, and from it, white smoke poured out. That same smoke began to take form, until it was in the shape of a cloud, but it also had a face on it. The cloud took in a deep breath and then released a stream of cold, icy wind that howled in Eda's direction. The Owl Lady suddenly felt a chill, and that's when she saw the blast of freezing air coming straight at her.
"HOLY TITAN!" Eda yelled as she ran from the freezing ice blast.
Eda weaved through several trees, really wishing she had her magic so she could blast that thing. Wait a minute! The Owl Lady skidded to a stop as she used the butt of her staff to draw a circle in the dirt. When the ice blowing cloud got closer, Eda smirked, and struck the circle she had made, which turned out to be a Fire Glyph. The flames roared out from the glyph and blasted the ice cloud into a puddle of water.
"HA! Gotcha!" Eda exclaimed. "Now where the devil is that Apple Blood?"
Eda spotted another series of signs and began following them.
"Ooh, she's getting better at her glyph magic," Luz observed.
"Now, we move into the next phase," said Gwen.
As Eda started to make her way through some bushes, she got tripped by some rope, and began tumbling until she landed in a giant clay furnace. The furnace began to heat up, and Eda was starting to sweat profusely. However, the temperature only seemed to rise more and more.
"Oh c'mon! Right from freezing cold and now to boiling hot?!" Eda complained.
The Owl Lady quickly drew a new glyph, at least five in total. Eda struck them with her staff and made the chain of Ice Glyphs erupt from the ground, creating huge ice glaives that pierced the furnace around her, and provided some cool relief. Despite these unforeseen events, Eda stubbornly pressed on as she followed the hand drawn signs to the promised Apple Blood.
"Ugh…now what?" Luz asked.
Gwen stood up and raised her hands. "Release the flying snakes."
Flying snakes…?
"Flying snakes?"
Eda started hearing hissing, she turned around and saw a flock of winged serpents flying right towards her. "FLYING SNAKES!"
Things were not going any better at the Owl House. King and Lilith had gone on an ice-cream bender and consumed, practically, their body weight in the stuff. King was lying on the couch across from Lilith, his belly distended from the copious amounts of the frozen treat he had consumed, and Lilith, surprisingly, still maintained her figure.
"How do you get a parent's attention?" King asked.
"Heck if I know. Mother wasn't even at my Coven Initiation! You know, for the Emperor's Coven, the most prestigious, elite Coven on the island! Heh, she barely even responded – and by 'barely' I mean never – to my letter telling her I was appointed the head of the Coven!" Lilith scooped up another spoonful of ice cream and munched it down.
King waved off her concerns as he retorted, "At least you know what your mother looks like! All I have is an old wall carving! What if that's just graffiti?"
Hooty opened the door to take a look at Lilith and King's progress, he had been silent for a minute, watching this all unfold. He thought that they might come out of their little spiral, but it seemed that spiral was only going further downwards.
"Heh, that's…uh," Hooty stretched himself into the living room, noticing the carnage that was the empty tubs of ice cream, "that's an awful lot of ice cream you guys are eating." Hooty continued to stretch himself until he was next to Lilith. "You know Eda gets that stuff from the Night Market, right?"
Lilith sneered and pointed at Hooty in an accusatory manner, as she asked in a mocking tone, "Are you my Mother? Because that's an awful lot of judgement there, Hootcifer."
King swiped at the empty container of ice cream that was on his head as he declared, "This stinks! If my Dad doesn't care about me, then why should I care about him?!" King dropped Francoise to the floor as he stood up on the couch. "Well, I'm not going to him! He's gonna have to come to me!"
Lilith sat up, feeling emboldened by King's words, and stood up as she proclaimed, "You're right! And I am sick of being overlooked! From now on I…I have no Mother! And I…I'd say that to her face!"
"Yeah!" King exclaimed.
Hooty, worried about the consequences of Lilith's words chimed in. "Uh, isn't that taking it a bit too far?"
King shook his head at Hooty and retorted, "It's not taking it far enough! Go tell her! Go on, Lilith! She's right outside!"
Lilith's eyes widened with shock. "SHE IS?"
King nodded his head. "Yeah! I saw her go off with Luz."
Lilith's expression turned to one of confusion. "With Luz? What for?"
"I think they're gonna heal Eda's curse or whatever. Doesn't matter, what does matter is you going to your mom and dropping – uh…Lilith, you alright?" King asked.
What did she expect from her mother? Both of her daughters were here, and both were cursed, and yet, somehow, she was overlooked. It was Eda, once again, getting all the attention. Her mother showing all her concern for Eda, never for her, despite almost getting petrified herself, and no longer a part of the Emperor's Coven, her career essentially over, and what's more, she had no magic, zero, nothing.
"Uh…heh-ha…is. That. So? Mother paying more attention to Edalyn…again." Lilith waved off the information. "I mean, it's not like a I care or anything."
Lilith's obvious lie was made more obvious by the fact that feathers began sprouting from her face. And to add even more insult to injury, there were fissures appearing on her body, cracks that let out violet ethereal light.
"Uh…Lilith, you got uh, uh…You got a little, uh, hmm…" King tried to be discreet by pointing at his face.
Lilith touched her face and panicked as she felt the feathers. She quickly flipped up the couch cushion, but there were none. She looked up at the ceiling, but the batch she saw that were taped up there were gone, too. Lilith, in a panic, began tearing the house apart as she tried to find one, just one bottle of elixir, but her search downstairs was yielding nothing, and only further stressing her out as the feathers began to multiply.
"Where are they?! Where are they?!" Lilith cried in a panic. "WHERE ARE THE ELIXIRS!"
Lilith ran to her sister's room, the last place she knew there would be a stash of them. But after tossing everything in Eda's room, she found nothing, not a single one.
"This…This can't be happening…This can't be happening!"
Lilith backed up into the middle of the room as she dropped to her knees and sobbed, there was nothing she could do to stop what was coming, she was scared, she was so scared, and angry, and sad. The cracks on her body began to multiply quickly, but that was the least of her concerns.
King and Hooty carefully entered Eda's room, with the little demon calling out, "Lilith…?"
The eldest Clawthorne sister screamed as her eyes became cast in inky darkness, her voice distorting into the familiar shrill shriek of the Owl Beast. King and Hooty watched in shock as the transformation took hold, and the only thing that King could say in this situation was, "…Weh…" as he offered some ice cream to the beast.
