"The number you have reached has been disconnected or is no longer in service."
Minako cut the line and dialled back the same number, unsurprisingly being replied to by the same robotic message. She tried one more time as if it would change the result.
"You know it's pointless, right?" Rei began. "She won't reply, no matter how often you call…"
"I know…! I just… don't know what else to do," Minako replied.
After the defeat of Eudial, Viluy and Tellu, Mimete had been unreachable. Even her phone number didn't work anymore. It didn't stop Minako from trying, in vain.
There was no sign of Eudial- or rather, Arimura Yuuko, either. The senshi had tried going after her when she escaped but lost track of her. They could remember a scream, seemingly coming from Yuuko, but when they reached the area where it was coming from, there was no one there.
Two days had passed since the incident. They were finally allowed to go visit the recently turned-back-human Yui and Lulu. Due to the injuries she sustained during Eudial's assault, Lulu was in a more severe condition, but her life wasn't at risk.
"You may come in," the nurse told them.
Without further ado, the inner senshi stepped inside the hospital room. Lulu was lying on the bed, looking through the window. Her hair was free and reaching her shoulders in light curls. She had bandages around her head and neck.
"Teruno-san?" Makoto called softly.
Lulu turned her head, looking at first surprised by the visitors, before offering them a soft smile.
"Kino-san, everyone… I wasn't expecting you."
"Of course we'd come to check on you," Makoto said. "How are you doing? Do you… remember anything…?"
Lulu looked thoughtful for a moment. It wasn't just a courtesy visit, they wanted to check if there was anything left of Tellu within Lulu.
"I remember… getting attacked by some mini-skirt-wearing cosplayers… then we went to see Mimi at the hospital… and after that… I'm not quite sure. I think the cosplayers came back to attack us… I can't remember anything past that."
"Do you remember who those cosplayers were?" Rei asked.
Lulu shook her head.
"I'm afraid I don't. Is… is your friend alright? The one who was being attacked… and what about Mimi?"
It didn't seem like Lulu remembered anything of her time as Tellu, or about the senshi's true identities.
"That must have been me you're talking about," Ami said. "I'm alright. It wasn't anything serious."
"And for Hanyuu-san… she left the hospital a few days ago," Minako replied. "I… I've been unable to contact her ever since."
"Hm, that sounds troublesome… but at least it means she's alright," Lulu replied. "She might just be visiting her family outside town. I'm glad no one has been hurt more seriously…"
"Who are you people and why are you in Teruno-san's room?"
Yui stepped inside the room, throwing suspicious glares at the group.
"They are with me, Bidou-san," Lulu said nonchalantly.
"Oh? These are your friends? My apology then."
Yui then looked at each one of them, as if she was taking mental notes for every one of them. She then offered them a polite smile.
"Thank you for looking out for Teruno-san. I am Bidou Yui, one of her schoolmates."
Yui's attention then shifted to Ami alone.
"You… I remember you."
Ami's heart skipped a beat, fearing the worst.
"Y-Yeah…?"
"Yes, you were there, when I was carried to the hospital. I remember seeing you when I was barely conscious… You must be the girl who found me unconscious and called for an ambulance."
"Oh… yes, that was me…!" Ami had to hide how much she wanted to sigh in relief.
Yui took a few steps toward her.
"You have all my gratitude for coming to my aid," she said, politely bowing.
"Ah…! There is no need to apologize, I just did what any decent person would…" Ami replied, bashful.
"May I please know your name?"
So it really seemed that just like Lulu, Yui had no memories of her time as Viluy.
"I'm Mizuno Ami. Nice to meet you, Bidou-san," Ami said, offering her hand.
Yui froze for a moment.
"Mizuno… Ami…?"
She then stared at Ami.
"I… I recognize you…!"
Tension started rising in the room, all were worried that she might have reverted back to being Viluy.
"You're Mizuno Ami-san, the girl genius! I heard about you. We keep having the same score on the national mock exam!" Yui exclaimed.
Instead of reaching for a simple handshake, Yui grabbed both Ami's hands. The others sighed in relief.
"It's an honour meeting a fellow genius! What a funny coincidence that we'd both met under those circumstances."
Ami felt a little bit embarrassed by Yui's sudden enthusiasm.
"The… feeling is mutual. I really wanted to meet you too, Bidou-san."
It wasn't a lie, ever since she knew Viluy used to be a human, Ami wanted to meet the real her. Both out of guilt for letting her die once, not knowing her true identity, and to get a chance to know the real Bidou Yui.
"Really? It pleases me to hear those words, Mizuno-san."
Ami looked down, feeling somewhat flushed.
"So, Bidou-san… you already got discharged from the hospital?" Makoto suddenly asked.
"Yes, yesterday in fact. I just came by to check on Teruno-san."
That explained why Yui wasn't there prior to their visit. They were worried she might have some memories of Viluy, but it didn't seem to be the case.
"I'm getting discharged today," Lulu said. "The doctor just wanted to keep me longer in case I show abnormal symptoms."
"I feel perfectly fine," Yui added. "Well, except for that few months of memory blank I have… Mugen Academy really got destroyed in that terrible accident. I wonder what I was up to in those months I can't remember…"
"Same here," Lulu concurred.
"W-Well, what matters is that you are both safe and sound," Minako said nervously.
"I guess… well, I'll take my leave," Yui said, walking away, before she turned back to look at Ami.
"I'd love to talk with you more another time, Mizuno-san," she said with a smile.
She then exited the hospital room. Lulu clicked her tongue.
"Since when does she care about me…" she muttered.
"Huh? You're not friends?" Makoto asked.
"We went to the same school, sure, but friends… acquaintances, maybe? Well, I guess after the accident, she might have softened up a bit. I'm just surprised she cared enough about me to come visit me."
"Maybe you underestimate how much she cares about you?" Ami proposed.
"Hmm… maybe. That just doesn't sound like the Bidou-san I know."
"Huh…?"
"Excuse me ladies, Miss Teruno is due for her checkup," the doctor suddenly entered the room. "She'll be free to leave if everything goes well."
"Oh, okay… talk to you later then, Teruno-san!" Makoto said.
"Mhm!" Lulu nodded.
The girls then left the room, leaving Lulu to her medical checkup.
"Aghh…!"
Yuuko was violently sent flying through the room before crashing to the ground.
"Urgh..!"
Yuuko remained crawling in pain on the floor while Kaolinite sat down on her throne, looking down at her.
"You disappointed me, Eudial- no, Arimura Yuuko," the magus said with an austere look on her face.
She then raised her staff, pointing it at her once protegé. Yuuko cowered in fear.
"And you have no use to me anymore," Kaolinite added.
"P-please, I can still be useful to you, Kaori-sensei…!"
Kaolinite stared at her with a blank expression.
"What did you just call me?"
"... uh… Kaolinite-sama?"
The magus swung her staff in the air, once again propelling Yuuko across the room.
"Arghhhh!"
The younger woman fell to the floor with a grunt.
"Don't you dare call me that ever again," she warned.
"I… I'm sorry, Kaolinite-"
"Enough!"
She was once again pointing her staff at Yuuko.
"You remember, don't you?" the magus asked.
"Huh… remember… what?"
"Our lives… as humans- no, you remembered my host, now that you're back at being just a mere human… You remember the past because you are no longer Eudial-"
"No!"
Yuuko fell on all four, tears starting to bead from her eyes.
"Stop saying that! I am still Eudial! I still feel like Eudial, I still remember being Eudial, I still want to be Eudial!" she let out in a desperate cry.
She then broke into tears, now on her knees, hands on her face to cover her eyes.
"Please, Kaolinite-sama, make me a witch again!" Yuuko begged. "I need to get rid of them! I need to be Eudial again! It's the only way…! I can't keep going like this… I need them gone! Please, I'm begging you!"
As Yuuko continued to sob, Kaolinite eventually rose from her throne and stood before her once apprentice. She let her staff hit the floor right next to her.
"Are you really that desperate to get rid of those Sailor Senshi, Arimura-san? Do you really want them gone that badly?"
"...The… Sailor Senshi…?"
"Hm?"
"R-right, them…! I did promise you I'd lend you my strength to get revenge on everyone who wronged us, including them-"
"But that was before you failed me," Kaolinite suddenly interrupted, "how could you possibly be of any use to me now that you are but a pitiful human? You are nothing but a liability to me, who could betray me at any time…"
"I would never…! I swear, if you just give me another chance, I'll show you I can still be useful… just make me a witch again, please…!"
Kaolinite slipped the tip of her staff under Yuuko's chin to lift it up, forcing her to look at her.
"Look at you, so pathetic and weak… it makes me sick to look at you, at what you have become…"
The magus then crouched, seizing Yuuko's chin between her thumb and index.
"Now now, stop crying already. I'll give you another opportunity to prove your worth to me. If you do prove yourself useful, I may make you a witch again."
"R-really…!?"
Yuuko immediately wiped off her tears, feeling hopeful as Kaolinite stood up.
"We still need to finish rebuilding the Taioron Crystal, and I'll seek your assistance for that. But first, we must take care of those pesky Sailor Senshi…"
Yuuko quickly stood up too.
"Yes, Kaolinite-sama!"
"Fancy meeting you here, Mizuno-san."
Ami jolted, not expecting to be called like that while exiting cram school. She turned back, being greeted by a familiar face that sent chills down her spine- not that it should anymore, but old habits are hard to break.
"Oh, hi, Bidou-san," Ami replied. "I… didn't expect to see you here."
"Yeah, I have a lot of catch-ups to do if I want to move to the next grade, with the few months of school I seemed to have missed," Yui replied. "I thought a cram school would help me get back on track with my studies."
Ami felt a pinch in her heart. She felt responsible for what happened to Bidou Yui when she was still Viluy. If only she knew back then that she used to be human- no, if she actually tried to save her, perhaps things would have gone differently. And the real Yui wouldn't have to live with the consequences of actions that were out of control.
Somehow, Ami felt like she had to make it up to her.
"If you want, I can help you get up to date in your studies," Ami proposed. "I'm a regular at this cram school so I could help you get more familiarized with the programs…"
Ami waited for an answer from Yui. She didn't want to come up as too pushy, or even arrogant, for suggesting such a thing. Yui stared at her for a moment with an indescribable expression on her face before she eventually smiled.
"I would humbly accept the offer, Mizuno-san," Yui began, "even though you are younger than me… not that it matters for a genius such as yourself! I'm sure I can still use your help."
Ami wasn't sure what to make of this answer but it seemed Yui had agreed to her offer.
"Let's exchange contacts then," Yui proposed. "Perhaps we could discuss this further with a coffee- or tea, whatever you prefer."
"Oh, uh, yeah, sure!"
After they exchanged phone numbers, Yui gave her a light pat on the shoulder.
"I'm really grateful for all the help you gave me so far, Mizuno-san."
Ami felt a little bit embarrassed by all the praise, not feeling worthy of it. Yui then took a few steps back.
"I should get going, I have to get registered to the cram school. Talk to you later, okay?"
Ami nodded.
"Y-yeah…!"
Yui walked away while Ami looked at her new contact in her phone, feeling tensed in her chest.
