Eliza peered around what felt like the hundredth corner. All the corridors looked the same to her, she just had to take Alex's word for it that they weren't going round in circles. Unlike all the previous corridors though, this one wasn't empty. Eliza quickly ducked back around the corner, "Two guards, both armed," she whispered to Alex.

Alex leant forward so he too could see around the corner, "Washington,"

"Probably," Eliza agreed, "Although last time we thought that we found Jefferson and Maddison,"

"Ugh," Alex scoffed, "Of all the people we could have found…I suppose it could have been worse, it could have been John Adams. Please don't let John Adams be the person in that room,"

Eliza smiled and snuck another look around the corner, "There's more guards than there was outside the office Jefferson and Maddison were held in,"

"That's also not the only entrance to that office," Alex said.

Eliza nodded thoughtfully, "So, it's probably Washington,"

Alex nodded in agreement before taking another look at the guards, "We should take the smaller one first, use the element of surprise-"

"Alex-"

"-Then we could use the musket to take out the second one, of course we'll have to go check the other door-"

"Alex!"

"What?"

"We have to go back and get Jefferson and Maddison,"

"Why? They'll just get in the way, they aren't soldiers,"

"That might be true, but we haven't been soldiers for over a decade and, in case you hadn't noticed, we are still chained together," Eliza pulled on the chain between them just to emphasize her point,

Alex groaned, "Ok, fine, let's go back to my office."

The two of them made their way back to Alex's office as quickly as they could, with Alex leading them on the direct route instead of the winding way they'd come.

One there, they found Jefferson and Maddison already waiting for them. Jefferson was lounging in Alex's desk chair and Maddison was perched on the edge of the desk.

"You took your time," Jefferson said,

"Well, you were too quick, you clearly weren't being thorough if you got back here that quickly," Alex snapped,

"And that's what you were doing was it? Being thorough?"

"Why yes, you see we found Washington!"

Maddison jumped up, "You could have led with that," he said, marching towards the door,

"Wait, we need a plan!" Eliza called after him,

"Show us where they are and we'll go from there," Jefferson said, also getting to his feet.

Eliza sighed but followed the three men out of the office.

The group made their way down the corridor with Alex leading the way and Eliza just behind him. The party came to a stop and Alex poked his head around the corner, "There," Alex whispered, pointing at the door and the two guards.

Jefferson raised his pistol to shoot the guard,

"No!" Eliza hissed, grabbing Jefferson's arm, "They'll hear us,"

"So?"

"So, more people will come running and we'll lose the element of surprise. Me and Alex could have shot them ourselves if that was the plan,"

Jefferson sighed and lowered the gun, "Well what do you suggest then?"

"We sneak up on them and take them out quietly. Me and Alex will take the far guard, you two take the one closest to us."

Maddison nodded and the four of them crept out from around the corner. Unfortunately, their footsteps weren't quiet enough and one of the guards turned and caught sight of them instantly, "Hey!" He cried, causing the other guard spin and to catch sight of them too.

Eliza glanced at Alex and the two of them nodded. They leapt forward as the first guard raised his gun. Their momentum knocked the guy off balance and Alex reached out to grab to guard's gun while Eliza wrapped the chain around the guard's neck. She pulled on the chain with all her weight and the guard went down.

When it became clear that they guard wasn't going to get back up any time soon, she turned to see Maddison and Jefferson standing over the other guard, who was lying unconscious on the ground. However, neither man was looking at the guard, instead they were both staring at her in shock.

"What did you do?" Eliza asked, nodding at their guard.

"I hit him with the gun," Maddison said, shock permeating his voice,

"There's another entrance to the room round the other side," Alex said, "We should go see if there's any guards there,"

"Shouldn't somebody stay here?" Maddison asked.

Alex and Eliza both glanced down at the two guards on the floor, "I don't think they're going anywhere," Alex remarked.

Alex led the group round the corner to the other entrance. As expected, there were two more guards there.

"Same again?" Eliza asked,

"Ok," Maddison agreed.

This time they managed to keep their steps quiet enough to sneak all the way up the guards without being noticed.

Maddison looked at Eliza, and she nodded at him. He swung his gun and hit one of the guards on the back of his head, causing the guard to tumble to the ground.

"Hey!" The second guard cried. He reached for his gun but, before he could raise it, Alex hit him on the back of the head in the same manner Maddison had.

Eliza knelt down next to the two guards and checked them for keys but no luck.

"You two stay here, me and Eliza will go back to the other door," Alex said,

"We'll shout when we're in position," Eliza added,

"And then what?" Jefferson asked,

"Then we go in, obviously,"

"Obviously," Maddison echoed.

Eliza and Alex made their way back to the first door,

"Somebody better have the keys to these," Eliza said, looking down at the shackles around her wrists,

"It would make rescuing Washington easier,"

"It would," Eliza agreed. She glanced at the musket still in Alex's hand, "We need to work out how to hold that," she said,

"Right," Alex agreed, "How about…" he tried to raise the musket to his shoulder in the correct position, but he couldn't get his hands far enough apart.

"Ok, no, that's not going to work, give it here," Eliza took hold of the end of the gun with both hands and raised it to her shoulder, "If you hold the barrel…" Alex took hold of the barrel of the gun, stabilising it against his shoulder,

"Ok, so, if I fire and you aim?" Eliza said,

"Ok, that could work," Alex agreed. The two of them shuffled over so that they were standing in front of the door with their gun raised,

"Ready?" Alex checked,

Eliza nodded and shouted as loud as she could, "Now!"
