Eliza was sat on an uncomfortable chair next to Washington in the waiting room of the hospital, anxiously awaiting any news on Alex.

Upon arrival at the hospital Eliza had begged to see Alex but she'd been told he was with a doctor, and she couldn't go and see him. She'd tried to push past the nurse who'd been blocking her entry, but Washington has pulled her back and told her to let the doctors do their job.

Once Washington has calmed Eliza down, a nurse had offered her the use of her spare uniform, so she didn't have to wait in a dress covered in Alex's blood. She'd accepted the offer, but now even though she was wearing clean clothes, she couldn't help but see all the blood when she closed her eyes.

As if feeling Eliza's panic, Washington reached out and rested his hand on Eliaz's shoulder, "It's Hamilton," he said, "He'll be Ok."

Eliza rested her hand over Washington's. She wished she could believe him.

Before she could thank Washington for his words, the doctor came down the corridor, "Mrs Hamilton?" He asked,

Eliza stood up and brushed her hands over her borrowed dress, "Yes?"

The doctor smiled at her, "Your husband is stable, he's now resting,"

Eliza sagged in relief, "Can I see him?" She asked eagerly,

The doctor sighed, "Ok, but you can't stay for very long, Mr Hamilton needs to rest,"

"Thank you!" Eliza cried.

The doctor stepped aside, and Eliza hurried down the corridor.

"In there," the doctor called, pointing at a door on Eliza's left.

Eliza flung the door open and burst into the room. Inside, Alex was sat up in bed. He looked tired, but he was awake. Alive. Eliza ran over to him and threw her arms around his neck, "Alex," she breathed before kissing him,

"Hey," Alex smiled.

Eliza smiled back at him before frowning, "No, wait, I'm mad at you,"

"What‽ What for?"

"You got shot! I was so worried! Don't ever make me feel like that again!"

Alex smiled, "I'll try not to," he said,

Eliza sat down on the bed next to Alex, "You better. And I'm sorry for ever making you feel like that,"

Alex reached out and took hold of Eliza's hand, "Let's both agree to avoid bullets in the future,"

"You had better," Eliza and Alex both looked up to see Washington leaning against the door frame, "I don't want to find myself in a hospital room because one of you two has been shot ever again, do I make myself clear?" He said,

"Yes, sir," Alex and Eliza replied in unison with matching grins,

Washington smiled softly at them, "I'm glad you're Ok, Alex," he said.

The doctor poked his head around the door, "I'm going to have to ask the two of you to leave," he said, "Mr Hamilton needs his rest,"

Eliza sighed and got up off the bed, "I love you," she said,

Alex reached out and grabbed Eliza's hand, "Don't go,"

Eliza squeezed his hand, "I'll be back as soon as I can," she promised.

Eliza and Washington made their way out of Alex's room only to find Jefferson and Maddison leaning against the wall opposite, waiting for them.

"How's Hamilton?" Maddison asked,

"He'll be Ok, the doctor says he'll make a full recovery," Eliza replied.

Maddison nodded then turned to Washington,

"What's the state of things?" Washington asked,

"The surviving members of the group have been rounded up and arrested," Jefferson reported,

"How many are dead?"

"Of theirs? Five, including Erik Jenkins,"

"And of ours?"

"None, Hamilton's the only major injury,"

"Erik Jenkins is dead?" Eliza asked,

Maddison nodded, "Washington shot him, the moment he fired at you and Hamilton,"

Eliza thought back to the chamber. She remembered the sound of a gun being fired as Alex had fallen to the floor. That had been Washington. The president had killed somebody for her and Alex.

"Thank you, Mr Jefferson," Washington said, interrupting Eliza's thoughts, "Is that everything?"

"Actually, sir, we'd like to talk to Mrs Hamilton if that's alright?"

Washington glanced at Eliza, and she nodded her acceptance,

"I will see you tomorrow then. Good night," he said, with a nod of his head, "Gentlemen, Mrs Hamilton,"

"Good night, sir," The three of them replied.

Once Washington was out of sight Maddison and Jefferson turned to Eliza,

"What can I do for you two?" Eliza asked,

Maddison shook his head, "Nothing,"

"We just wanted to say that we will keep your secret," Jefferson said quietly,

"Oh," Eliza said in surprise, she didn't know what she's been expecting them to say but it hadn't been that, "Thank you,"

Maddison smiled at her, "You rescued us today, and we owe you for that,"

"Alex helped too," Eliza pointed out,

Jefferson scoffed, "Well we can't owe him, we'd never here the end of it,"

"I suspect we won't anyway," Maddison said.

Jefferson groaned, "Ugh, he's going to be insufferable," he turned back to Eliza, "You know, if you ever fancy going into politics I would much rather have you around than Hamilton," he said,

"I'll take that as a compliment,"

Jefferson smiled, "It was meant to be one."

"Can we escort you home?" Maddison offered but Eliza shook her head,

"Thank you, but I think I'm going to stay here,"

Maddison nodded, "Well then good night, Mrs Hamilton,"

"I hope we meet again some time," Jefferson added,

"Good night."

Eliza watched Jefferson and Maddison walk off before doing a quick look around to check she was alone. When she was sure there were no doctors lurking around, she carefully opened the door to Alex's room and snuck back inside. Alex was curled up peacefully sleeping under a pile of blankets.

Eliza tiptoed over to the bed. She quietly eased her shoes off and climbed up next to him. She took hold of Alex's hand and rested her head on his shoulder. She closed her eyes and let the sound of Alex's breathing lull her to sleep, ready so she'd be there when Alex awoke the next morning, just as she intended to be there with him every morning.
