"Aren't you coming, Wedy?"

I asked one foot on the highway. My face was covered by a helmet and I needed to catch up to Mr. Yagami, who was inviting a long-time-no-see Aizawa to follow.

"No, thanks. I'm not in the habit of playing with fire."

One could point out that making a living hacking and stealing is a form of playing with fire, but I understood her point of view.

Snatching up my extra gun, I followed the growing group of police officers surrounding Higuchi's wrecked convertible. Pointing my gun in a sea of loaded metal. Higuchi gave no thought and slid out of his car to be cuffed and blinded by masking tape. Mogi reported back to L and Light as the once hovering helicopter landed safely and in silence.

Once a preplanned headset was placed around Higuchi's ears, L started asking some pretty damn important questions.

"Kyosuke Higuchi, How have you been killing people?"

With everything being on the same frequency, people not standing close by could hear both sides of the interrogation. With his eyes covered, I couldn't tell what was going through Kira's head and we all stood in deafening stillness under dim starlights.

"Answer the question."

No one else noticed, but I could feel anxiety drip off the words. I couldn't blame L, whatever happened tonight would color tomorrow.

"You wouldn't believe me…"

"If you refuse to answer, then we would be force to employ every means necessary."

"It's a notebook."

"A notebook?"

"You write a name down in it while knowing their face and they die."

That was a lot to take in all of a sudden, magical paper that kills. I didn't believe a single word of any of it. Not until Higuchi told us it was in his bag on the passenger seat and I think everyone took a collected breath waiting to see who was going to be sent to retreat it.

"Mr. Yagami, please check the car."

He step forward, a slight hesitation in his footing and I wasn't sure if it was because of oncoming pain from his wound or what he could be getting himself in. Waiting for something to react to, I holstered my gun for quicker movements.

"I found it, Ryuzaki, but there's nothing special about it."

You could hear the pages flipping through his earpiece and that mixed feeling of being tricked and relief pumped through my bloodstream. I was now under the impression that we should take Higuchi back and let Watari and I try, just like Misa.

I almost threw my earpiece off when Mr. Yagami let out a sudden scream of terror. He landed on his lower half and the unpleasant memory of L doing the same at the word Shinigami. It was ghastly how close the poses were the same.

"Shinigami…"

I mumbled a little too loud, hearing the light buzz of connection smothered out in my ear.

Ah, he was thinking the same thing.

I wracked my brain as I pushed my frame around other armed men to walk over, reels of pages of my Japanese mythology book from Aoyama. Shinigamis were supposed to be ugly monsters, and maybe that's what was happening.

By the time I was finished thinking and planning, the notebook had already moved hands. He didn't make a sound like Mr. Yagami, but Mogi normally still shoulders had a rattle to them.

"What the hell is going on?" I asked the elder Yagami while offering my hand to get back on his feet.

"It seems you can only see it if you've touched the notebook."

Now I needed to lay my hands on it.

Mogi was a man built strong with a quick stroll and even though I wasn't that far behind, he still beat me to the helicopter. With everything I'd done tonight, I couldn't help but be a tad out of breath by the time I could place my hand on the pushed-out door L had already it in his possession.

Those black seas I'd fallen in love with had changed into shiny marbles, staring toward Higuchi's car but not at the actual car, or anything. I said his name softly enough for his ears only but he didn't react.

Another blood-curdling scream rocked my ear drum, vibrating the hell out of my brain. All I could understand was Light wouldn't stop and I was getting assaulted from both sides. In a more animal instinct than human, I ripped the helmet and then earpiece off of my person and inside the helicopter. I couldn't care less about Kira at this point, he was blinded and surrounded by armed officers.

"Light, I haven't touched it yet…"

I pushed the words out, grabbing onto a piece of the helicopter until my balance came back to me.

"H-hold on, I'm just checking some of these names written in here for authenticity."

At this angle, all I can see is the top half of the cover, happy to read to some English I noted it seemed to read death note. That and Light's head down towards the laptop Watari kept in the helicopter.

Watching Light's head past the seconds, I even tried to get L's attention but he was in his mind and of no help. Finally, I just decided to climb inside the cab, move around Watari and tap the cover, but as I started to wiggle in a hard grunt distracted me.

Higuchi fell limp into the arms of who I think was Aizawa, his eyes painted forever in horrible pain as others surrounded the body.

I overheard the declaration of death by what Aizawa believed to be a heart attack from L's control panel. It was unnecessary for me though after I saw those death-stained eyes.

My eyes shot to L's profile, swearing for a moment, out of the corner, just for a second he looked at me too.

I tried to keep my tone cool like a subordinate should, as I asked to be let in for the ride home. Watari was about to move over for me join but L simply shut the door in my face and it felt more figurative than literal.
