Chapter 1: Kane Valdos
(Present time, City of Vale)
The large city of Vale served as the capital of the Kingdom of the same name, it stood as one of the bulwarks of defense against the grimm, its walls serving as the shield, but in these modern times, the grimm were not the only danger that the city had to contend with.
"If you're not with us, you're against us, which one is it?" during night time, the city became vulnerable to criminal activity, operating from the shadows of alleyways and warehouses, one of the biggest and most notorious groups that had been operating in the Vale for a while were a White Fang splinter group under the authority of Adam Taurus, these extremists fought for what they believed were the rights of every faunus, some even going beyond and wanting to see the faunus rule humans, but tragically, in that pursuit they rely on the very same cruel and brutal methods that anti-faunus hate groups would use, pitting beast against beast and seeing which one wins.
"Please just let me go." A rat faunus said shakily and nervously, he looked like he was on the verge of tears, he had the unfortunate luck of being pulled aside by three of the White Fang members trying to "recruit" him to the cause. "I don't want fight, i just want to go h-"
Before he was able to finish his sentence, the leader of the pack slammed his hand against the wall that the rat faunus was pinned against, alarmingly close to him as well.
"You refuse to fight? You refuse to stand up for the tyrants that chain us everyday? What sort of traitor are you?" The leader yelled out, the rat faunus could not help but to close his eyes terrified, the leader merely sighed as he pulled out a pistol. "The only thing worse than a slaver, is a slave that sides with the slavers."
The rat faunus gritted his teeth expecting the worst, but before the pack leader could fire an empty can smacked across the side of his face as he stumbled to the side holding his face, the rest of the pack looked to where the can was thrown.
"Yall really thinking about recruiting that little guy? Look at him, he wouldn't last a minute in a fight." At the other side stood a young man, his wild, unkept, brown hair shaked gently against the soft night breezed, bright golden eyes shining in the darkness, he wore a crimson sleeveless coat with fur around the neck, and from inside, a black tank top which revealed his slim yet toned arms, he also wore torn black jeans and a pair burgundy boots. He seemed to be enjoying his party crash as he was smirking at the troublemakers. What caught their attention the most was the weapon the young man held, resting at the side of his hip, it seemed to be a blunt weapon of sorts, shaped like a bat, the peculiar thing about this bat were the wires that seemed to connect to the top of it, and in the top there seemed to be what looked like some sort of engine, the weapon looked like it was put together on the spot, it looked messy, dirty and used, but still it kept itself intact somehow. "Why don't you recruit me instead? Hell, why don't we have my graduation test right now? You three against me, sounds fair?"
The leader regained his composure, despite wearing a mask, the young man was certain that the pack leader was pissed as he growled at him before pointing at the youth.
"Kill the human!" He said as the other two members charged, each with a blade on their hand, the youth only smiled as he reached for his weapon and pointed it towards the thugs that came for him.
"Alright." He swung the bat as a warmup, before holding it to his side and above his head with both of his hands. "I like a challenge with proper risks."
The first goon swung his blade, but the youth easily blocked the blow with the weapon, but soon after the second good swung his weapon, but the young warrior was able meet the strike with one of his own, aimed at the blade, and deflected the blow, he taunted both of them by smiling and motioning for the to try again, the first goon, in a fury, charged once more, swing after swing missing completely as the youth was able to easily dodge or deflect every attempt, the second one sneaked behind and attempted to ambush him, but he was able to sense it and ducked below, the swing almost striking the first goon.
"Hey, watch it, are you trying to cleave my head off?!" The lackeys bickered among each other before a whistle caught their attention, the young man stood, leaning on his bat, he had a look of disappointment on his face.
"Man forget it, if this is all yall can do, i don't want no part in your little group." The young man resumed a more relaxed battle stance, before piercing the two goons with his eyes. "Yall are weak as hell."
The two were stunned for a second, before the leader yelled at them to kill the human, and while hesitant at first, the smug look on the youngster was enough to make the first one rush him, he swung the weapon overhead.
"Big mistake." said the youngster as he effortlessly dodged to the side, in quick succession he elbowed the goon to the side of his head, then he swung his bat low and hit the man's legs, tripping him and causing him to fall flat on his back, before he could recover, the spear warrior raised the weapon against him and struck him in the face, completely shattering his aura and rendering him unconscious, the second lackey stood in shock, he was barely able to keep up with what happened, he was shaking in his boots but the threat of his leader's wrath was bigger as he charged, swing after the swing, the youngster once again dodged and parried with ease, at one point when the thug tried to sweep at his legs, he was able to flip over him and land right behind him, before the thug could ask what happened he was met with a fist, courtesy of the youngster, before he could recover he was struck in the face by the bat, shattering his aura and rendering him unconscious as well, the young man looked at the leader, who took a couple of steps back, taken aback by the athleticism being displayed.
"Well, when you want something done well…" the pack leader muttered to himself, as he whipped out a blade that was segmented in parts, each breaking off and forming a whip, and a revolver at the other side. "Do it yourself!" he yelled out and he delivered whipping upon whipping, occasionally firing with his gun.
For the first time, the youth seemed to be struggling, he was being held back, forced to play defensively, each whip and shot forcing him to stay in place as he was being barraged at a distance.
"You must feel real proud for taking down some fodder aren't you brat?" The leader taunted, his barrage of distanced striked remaining strong. "But now look at you, you can't block forever, eventually you're going to break down, and then I'm going to enjoy marking every single part of that disgusting, inferior body of yours!"
But as the leader taunted and gloated, the young man shrugged and smiled.
"Let me show you how different we are in strength." The young man's eyes glowed, his aura expanding, the ambience around him seemed to change, while the pack leader did not notice as he was busy in his assault, the rat faunus commented at the seemingly change that was taking place.
"U-uh? Is it getting warmer?" The perplexed faunus looked at the youngster, and his eyes grew wide, it was as if the young man himself was boiling from the inside, his skin turning redder, and by some miracle, one of the strikes actually managed to hit the young man in the face.
"Ah! I got you know!" The leader yelled out as he was about to let loose a barrage of strikes, but before the attack could even land again, the youngster managed to grab the end of the thug's weapon, and channeled all the heat he could to that part of the whip. "Hey, hands off brat!" The masked man yelled
"As you wish." It was all the youngster said as he let go of the weapon, letting it loose, as the leader of the pack readied for another blow, a sound was suddenly heard.
*CRACK*
A piercing sound came from the whip, the leader's eyes widened under his mask as the end of the whip broke off and fell to the ground, the connecting chain seemingly melted just by this stranger's touch.
"Again, if this is all your little group can do, then I don't want any part of it." the young man's golden eyes glowed as he readied himself to charge at the leader. "Yall are weak as hell!"
"S-Shit! Wait a minu-" before he even had time to raise his revolver or mutter another word, the youngster charged, he never saw him coming as before he could process the man's insane speed, he was already in front of him, the warriors fist was now covered in flames, and in a decisive motion, he struck the leader in the solar plexus, shattering the man's aura, which quickly came with him being sent to unconsciousness.
The young man took a deep breath, and then a sigh of disappointment, he had hoped that he would have at least sweat a little, but this could hardly be considered a workout for him, as of late many of the thugs and criminals he fought were pretty weak, either this was a consequence of him getting stronger, or beating the competition to a pulp, probably a mix of two.
He simply shrugged as he carried his bat over his shoulder with one hand and walked over to the faunus, he extended his hand to help him get up, the rat faunus that had witnessed it took the hand and lifted himself up and quietly took a couple of steps backwards, the young boy was already on his way, not even muttering a word to him, so before he was out of his sight, he called out to the young man.
"I…THANK YOU! I CAN'T REPAY YOU ENOUGH! WHAT'S YOUR NAME!?" the faunus yelled, in response the young man waved him off, not even turning around.
"Kane Valdos." he answered.
Reaching for his pocket he took out what seemed to be a considerable amount of Lien.
"Consider this your protection fee." He muttered to himself before resuming his way, his destination completely unknown, beating around thugs was starting to get repetitive and boring, it was always the same flavor of tough guy every week, or the occasional White Fang "recruitment" party, cheating fools out of their Lien was always a option, but he found that far more boring, and would rather do it closer to police, the prospect of having to outrun and outwit trained law enforcers excited him, and was in character for his general disdain for authority, but seemingly, tonight was going to be a slow night for him " *yawns* Man, there's nothing good to do in Vale anymore, stuff is either too expensive or too boring, might as well get some shut eye…"
As he was about to climb the side of one of the buildings, something caught his attention, a black limousine passed, normally he would not really care much about fancy cars or the rich people inside fancy cars, but he was just able to take a peak of the figures that were inside that vehicle, and a mischievous smile emerged on his face. "Oh this just got really interesting."
(Just a few moments later, City of Vale)
Headmaster.
A position of authority within a Huntsman Academy, it is the highest position one can obtain at such a institution, overseeing applications was one of the many duties a headmaster had, and Ozpin has spent most of his morning doing just that, and despite doing this for a long time now, it never got any less easier, perhaps that was mostly just age talking though.
Huntsman or Huntress are titles given to those who complete their studies at these academies, they are licensed elite warriors who first job, above all, was to uphold the peace, these warriors of the people were the toughest of the toughest, the guiding light in the darkness, the glimmer of hope in the vast sea of despair, they were the first and the last line of defense against the Grimm, creatures of destruction, mankind's apex predator, as such a huntsman is seen as a prestigious position, not to mention the many benefits, therefore many people often aspire to become huntsman, either for personal gain, or a genuine desire to protect, this fact, Ozpin was well aware of, and as he receive hundreds of applications, he turns down hundreds of these as well, because becoming a huntsman was not for everyone, definitely not for the faint of heart.
"I still cannot believe you dragged us all the way to Vale on the academy bullhead, rented a limousine, and drove us several miles out here, at night to… buy some tea?" Ozpin's right hand man, or in this case woman, Glynda Goodwitch commented, trying to wrap her head around the ridiculous quest Ozpin had dragged her into, for some tea. "Care to explain why you had to do this at this time of the day and not… oh I don't know, tomorrow?"
Both Ozpin and Glynda have just left a store that specializes in the selling of many exotic goods from the foreign kingdoms, one of these goods being different blends of tea which the Headmaster had made a habit of drinking quite often. While Glynda was not in any way unfamiliar with the occasional shenanigans the headmaster sometimes pulled, interrupting her alone time, which she already found difficult due to her job and position, was definitely one of the fastest ways to sour her mood.
"Well, I have to review more applications in the morning, not to mention all the meetings to prepare for this year's curriculum and prepare this year's trial for the new students." Ozpin said, his cheerful and upbeat mood not suffering even a dent. "This new blend is brand new from Vacuo, by the time i had time to go pick it up tomorrow, they might have already sold out."
Glynda massaged the bridge of her nose gently, trying her utmost best not to lose her patience with the headmaster, to alleviate any frustration, she merely sighed at the headmaster's antics. "And why exactly did you need me to come along?"
The headmaster chuckled.
"Why for protection of course. You don't have a job like mine without more than a few enemies, Glynda, who knows who might be hiding in the dark just waiting for the opportunity to strike down helpless old me." Ozpin said cheerly, mixed with his laughter, but Glynda's expression was anything but cheerful right now, there was only one desire she had, and that was to use her semblance to blast the headmaster all the way back to Beacon. "Don't worry Glynda, I'll save a cup for you, I heard it's a very good blend, even for the Vacuo standards."
As the headmaster had finished saying he felt his body collide against something, or someone in this case, a young boy, wild, unkept, brown hair, bright golden eyes, he wore a crimson sleeveless coat with fur around the neck, and from inside, a black tank top which revealed his slim yet toned arms, he also wore torn black jeans and a pair burgundy boots.
"Sorry about that…" the young man apologized, thankfully neither of them ended up falling, Ozpin was able to regain his balance quickly, before he could say anything back, the youth had already raced past the both of them, Glynda eye'd the strange boy suspiciously.
"Oddly in a hurry for such a time of the day, don't you think?" Glynda commented, the question being asked towards Ozpin who just finished dusting himself off.
"Oh Glynda, must you always look for clues of misbehavior?" The headmaster asked his partner with an amused tone. "It was merely an accident, nothing more i'm sure."
Ozpin was ready to call it a day, heading back into the rented limousine, Glynda had her suspicions, but she decided not to press any further, as both of them reached the vehicle, Glynda was the first to sit back on her seat, looking to the headmaster, she looked perplexed as he seemed to be fiddling with his pocket as if looking for something, and after a short while he looked back to his partner before saying embarrassingly.
"Ah ah, miss Glynda…" He started off, his smile growing more nervous, "I… seemed to have lost my wallet."
Glynda took a deep breath, got out of the limousine, and walked calmly to the direction the youngster had run to, Ozpin feared this time, he might have poked the bear a bit too much.
(Yet again, a few moments later, Rooftops of the City of Vale)
Kane was laying on his back, legs atop each other and one arm used as a cushion for his head, he was toying around with the wallet he just nicked from the headmaster, juggling it around, he was seemingly waiting for something to happen.
"Man, come on, surely they noticed it by now…" He had not yet examined the contents of the wallet, he was not really curious, but as boredom was setting in he decided to take a peek, but before he could scavenge the contents…
"A bit too young to be resorting to theft don't you think young man?" a woman's voice was heard
Kane quickly stood up and locked in to where the voice came from, and there she was, Glynda Goodwitch, standing there with her arms crossed. "Man, I didn't even hear her coming up? How did she even catch up to me so fast?" he thought to himself, but after shaking those questions to the side he gave a wicked smile as he took his battle stance, his trusty bat in his hands.
"Young man, believe me, you do not want to pick this fight." Glynda said her trademark stern tone, it was as if she was disciplining one of her students for misbehavior. "I can only guess you don't know who's wallet you just stole, do you?"
Kane only laughed, he was barely managing to control his excitement over the situation, every fiber of his being wanted to charge in right now.
"Nah, I know who the old man was, and I definitely know who you are, Glynda Goodwitch, Ozpin's right hand woman." This young man pointed his bat at the professor, she however didn't look too amused at the situation. "Why do you think I targeted him specifically? If all I wanted was a quick buck I would have nicked any other sorry loser out there."
Glynda only met the boy's fiery gaze with a confused look. "So, you purposefully brought a huntress's attention to herself, and for what purpose?" The young man only laughed, raising his bat with both hands, he looked back at Glynda, he activated his semblance, his body turning hotter and hotter, his skin reddening, even Glynda could feel the change in temperature.
"TO FIGHT!"
Kane lunged without a warning, swinging his bat with all of his force, but all he hit was air, Glynda had already dodge out of the way, sneaking into the young man's blind spot, she reached for her waist as she pulled out her own weapon and struck Kane in the back of his head.
*CRACK* "OUCH!" Kane yelled out as he stripped forwards, caressing the back of his head that had just been struck by the fierce woman, she was now wielding her trusty weapon, a thin, black riding crop with a simple black and purple design on the handle, The Disciplinarian.
"D-did you just hit me with a riding crop?" Kane asked, completely befuddled by the woman's weapon of choice.
"How else am I supposed to discipline disobedient children like yourself?" She struck her weapon to the ground imitating the same sound that had striked Kane in the back of the head.
Kane was now looking pissed, he charged once more at the witch, swinging his bat with all his might and speed, but once again all he hit was air, Glynda once again has dodged into his blind spot, but this time Kane's instincts acted, he rushed forwards again to dodge another strike of her weapon, which he successfully did so, Glynda relaxed her stance, as if inviting him to attack again, but he knew better, so for a while both of them stood still, before once again, Kane took the initiative, he charged once more, but instead of striking Glynda, the youth used the momentum to jump upwards and do a flip, as be did such he swinged his bat mid air at the witch, Glynda however was able to parry and block the attacks, Kane had now landed behind her and with one hand he swung his bat, this blow was blocked, but then he raised his fist preparing for a strike, Glynda was caught off guard as the youngster's fist was suddenly engulfed in flames as it came closer to contact, she was still able to dodge downwards by lowering herself, but Kane was able to capitulate on this quickly as he raised his leg preparing to send it crashing against the professor, but before he could finish his attack, something heavy struck him in the back of his head, he was sent tumbling forwards landing face first into the ground, his aura was still stable, but he could tell he had taken some damage.
"Seriously? What's with me and getting hit on the back of my head today?" He got back up and faced Glynda once more, but his eyes widened at the sight, alongside the professor, numerous amounts of debris started floating, a purple aura surrounding them as she was now controlling the debris. "That's… Your semblance i'm guessing…"
"A good observation, you get a passing grade." Glynda allowed herself a brief smug smile, while she did not admit it openly, seeing people amazed at her semblance always made her feel proud of her strength. "Now for something more practical."
Goodwitch took the initiative this time, hurling the debris at Kane, but Kane's speed and instincts were starting to pay off, he was able to dodge and parry most of the debris that were being thrown at him, one block even tries to strike him from behind again, but he jumped to avoid it, in mid air, two of them came from above, Kane raised his bat and struck at both blocks at once, pulverizing them, another came flying to his face just as he landed, but he was luckily able to dodge out of the way, this pattern kept on repeating of him dodging projectiles, focusing solely on defense, eventually there were no more projectiles coming his way, he smirked at the professors, thinking he now had the upper hand, but then he noticed a shadow looming over her, and the over him, he looked up and was stupefied by what he saw, the metal staircase he used to climb the side of the building was now floating above, about to crash into him, and as it did, all the young man could do was close his eyes and prepare for the worst, but the pain never came, all he could feel was the sounds of metal twisting and bending, and as he opened his eyes, he once again could not believe it, Glynda had picked the metal staircase, bent and twisted it into a cage, and drop said cage on Kane, basically imprisioning him. Kane had lost. Glynda walked up to the caged man and she extended her hand.
"Now, I believe you have something that belongs to someone else." She said strictly and sternly, Kane only stared at Glynda for a moment, still seething over his loss, he was even angrier over being stuck in a cage, something he had avoided by himself in over 3 years now, he growled in frustration but eventually gave in, and handed her the waller he stole earlier into the night.
"Ah, Glynda, I see you have the situation under control." A new voice joined them on the rooftop, Headmaster Ozpin seemed to have taken the long way to the rooftops as he emerged from a door. "And I see you detained our suspect as well."
Ozpin got closer to the cage and eye'd the youngster stuck in the cage, he saw his fiery gaze towards him, and a rebellious spirit that even in this predicament flared stronger than anything he had seen. Kane on the other hand was feeling uneasy, it was almost as this man was looking into his every being, trying to read him like some sort of book, he too got closer to the headmaster, as some sort of defiance, he was not sure what he was really trying to defy though.
"What is your name, young man?" Ozpin asked him, Kane spat on the ground and stared down the headmaster.
"And why the hell does it matter to you old man?" The youth responded, he was brash, rebellious, hot headed, aggressive, the marks of a boy who probably lived on his own in the streets for years now, Ozpin responded to this aggressivity with a gentle smile before taking a step back.
"I would just like to know the name of the young man who stole from the headmaster of Beacon Academy, all for the sake of starting a fight with a huntswoman, measuring your own strength I assume?" Kane looked at Ozpin with surprise, this guy already knew why he stole his wallet, this made Kane even more wary of the headmaster. "Trust me, your not the only one who has tried to one up a huntsman, many try, either out of disrespect to the academies, or to impress other huntsmans into being recommended into a academy, but you don't really strike me as either, so young man, why did you want to fight Miss Goodwitch here?"
Kane's eyes steered to Glynda, her expression had not changed during this while exchange, still sporting that stern disciplinary look to her, he knew he probably didn't stand much of a chance to begin with, yet even then he had to know how strong he was compared to the other huntsman and huntresses out there, a journey for power that he decided to embark on got himself.
"I made a promise to my big sister, that I'd be strong, that when we met again, I would not need to rely on her anymore, that I was my own man." He began, his hostile gaze disappeared from his eyes, Ozpin could only see within the young warrior a burning dedication, a stubborn spirit that fought the toughest of odds. "When we meet once again, i wanna show her, i want to show her just how strong her little brother became, i wanna show her that she does not need to worry over me, that she is free to follow her dreams and ambitions as much as she wants, i owe her that much at least… she… she saved my life."
Kane was now staring at the floor, contemplating his words, there were probably better ways to express himself, but he never was good at conversations, or just talking in general. Ozpin for his part was unreadable, it was impossible to predict what was going on in that man's head, that is what Glynda was currently trying to decipher, Ozpin was showing unordinary interest in this young man, something she was not sure was a good sign, at least for her.
"Glynda, would you be so kind as to lift the cage?" Ozpin asked Glynda, her and Kane looked at Ozpin like he had lost his mind, Glynda could not find any possible reason to do such, but still she relented and lifted the cage from Kane, the young boy looked at Ozpin with confusion, why did this man suddenly release him? He wasn't going to complain, but he is often finding the man's actions to be completely illogical and irrational.
"Well, while it is touching that you want to prove yourself and to put your family at ease, I do not believe this path that you're currently on will lead to much improvement on your part, that is something that I'm sure you have probably picked up on already." Ozpin commented, and Kane could not deny, the everyday thugs were getting weaker and weaker in his eyes, yet at the same time, Kane didn't feel any progress of late, he felt stagnant, the undercity criminals of Vale no longer provided him a challenge. "But, I do know of a place where you can find such results, and where you won't have to resort to illegal activities to obtain them."
Kane eye'd Ozpin curiously, the offer did look tempting, meanwhile Glynda also looked at Ozpin though her expression told a different tale, it was almost as if she was hesitantly awaiting the headmaster's next words.
"Tell me young man, would you like to join Beacon?" Ozpin asked, extending his hand towards Kane.
Glynda looked as if she had already seen this coming, but still sighed at the headmasters proposition, Kane on the other hand was completely perplexed, he had stolen this man''s wallet, fought his assistant, and was now being offered a place at his academy, this man was beyond reason, yet he found it very amusing, such that he could not help but to laugh, a laughter that only got stronger.
"You are a weird one, old man, but damn, you do offer a good deal." Kane pondered, "But im not really into the whole "saving the innocent" deal, to be completely honest, i don't really care that much about the innocent, i'd join purely for selfish reasons, even then you would have me?"
"Yes I would." Ozpin's response was swift, quick and conclusive.
"Well, alright, I'll be one of your students, but no complaints about what I do with my license." Kane shook Ozpin's hand, sealing the deal they just made.
"I'm happy to hear, tomorrow morning at 8am, the Bullhead to Beacon will lift off, make sure you're there by those hours." Ozpin replied, letting go of the youth's hand.
"Yeah yeah, i'll be there if i can be bothered to, see yeah around old man, you too lady." Those were the young boys last words as he leapt off the building and continues his aimless walk across the city, Glynda approached the headmaster, she knew of the headmasters antics and how he worked in outright unpredictable ways at times, but getting a random kid from the streets and asking him to become a huntsman? This was way out of left field, even for Ozpin, a fact the headmaster acknowledged.
"I know you're not happy with this sudden development Glynda, having a student like that will probably not be the easiest to teach." Ozpin commented
"I'm not as worried about how hard it will be to teach him, I'm more worried about how hard it will be to work in a team with such a student." Glynda made her worries clear, the academies have always been places that emphasized teamwork, to such an extent that students are assigned to teams of four individuals from day one, they even share the same dorm, a huntsman may be strong as a individual, but they truly shine when working together, it is how mankind has managed to hold the tide of Grimm, by working in union, even if that union has had some chaotic history at times. "Ozpin, was this the right decision?"
Ozpin looked up at the shattered moon, lost to his own thoughts.
"I don't know Glynda, but I do know this, times are changing, and in these turbulent times, we might need people like that young man, people whose rebellious spirits will live on after our duty is done, whose flaming willpower and determination will carry them to the end."
(Present Time, ?)
A man in a fully white robe stood alone upon a barren wasteland, with rocky terrain and enormous Gravity Dust crystals sprouting from the ground. The sky was a miserable dark red color, the only sign of life being the massive castle, seemingly made of the same crystals the rose from the ground, the Evernight Castle, the castle of his current master, the figure was currently making its way to that very same castle, along the way he came across a sight that, while would make average huntsman squeal, were more then common in these desolate, despair filled lands, the Grimm Pools, the white robed man just so happened to be a witness when he saw a massive Beowulf emerge from the viscous liquid, it tore through the thing ooze layer, and immediately began looking for the nearest source of life, looking at the white robed man, it lunged at him with fury and hunger, the white robbed man extended his arm, holding two fingers out, and stop those fingers, a darkness shone, a orb of nothingness, throwing the orb at the creature, eradicating the Grimm with ease, he resumed his journey to the castle at the same pace he was before, giving no thought to the monstrosities that filled these lands.
"I hope you are prepared Ozma, because I myself can confirm that she is.
