Subverting Expectations
"You know, I'm going to be honest," Suigetsu said contemplatively, "I didn't think Uchiha would be able to lead the company without his dad and his brother, but the dude's doing it."
That casual comment earnt him a stomp against his shoulder, making him hiss and rub the aching area. He scowled at the offender, who glared right back at him.
"I can't believe you didn't have any faith in him!" Karin snapped while their pink haired colleague, Haruno, nodded furiously. "Of course he's able to lead it, why wouldn't he be?"
"Maybe because he's still quite young?" he riposted, raising an eyebrow.
"Age doesn't matter!" she insisted.
"Just because you wouldn't be able to do it," Haruno sniped and crossed her arms.
"Who said I even would want to do it?" he shot back and leant out of the way when she made a move to slap him.
Both women straightened up and smiled brightly when the new temporary boss of Uchiha Cooperation, Uchiha Sasuke, strode past them, immersed in a phone call. He still acknowledged them with a brief nod, which made both women sigh softly in adoration and had Suigetsu secretly rolling his eyes behind their back.
Uchiha Cooperation was officially still led by Uchiha Fugaku, the current patriarch, but his eldest son Itachi had been taking over more and more responsibilities as the years went by. Right now, however, Fugaku was out of the country for a long business trip and Itachi had fallen ill, leaving his younger brother Sasuke to take over leading the business temporarily. Some had expressed their doubts about Sasuke's ability to do so, but the young Alpha was proving that he could definitely handle the responsibilities that came with leading a company.
"There was not one doubt in my mind," Haruno declared. "Sasuke-kun has always been so reliable and so smart! Of course he would be able to handle the leadership as well!"
"If I was his mate, I definitely wouldn't worry about anything," Karin sighed, leaning back on her hands. "Sasuke-kun has everything under control for sure."
"It must be so nice, to be able to lean on him for everything," Haruno sighed dreamily.
Suigetsu just shook his head, wisely keeping his mouth shut.
It was already late at night when the front door slammed shut. Naruto hummed quietly to himself and opened one eye, listening to the other man's progression through their house. The sharp 'clink' sound of the keys being dropped in the bowl, the soft rustling of a coat and shoes being removed. Quiet footsteps walking to the kitchen and staying there for a moment before those same set of footsteps walked upstairs to the bathroom first. The bathroom's light was flipped on, followed by the noise of streaming water.
Not long after the water was turned off and the light disappeared those same footsteps made their way to the bedroom.
"Long day?" Naruto questioned softly.
He received an affirmative grunt as answer before the bed dipped down on one side. He rolled over, opening his arms. Sasuke immediately slotted his body against his, returning the embrace, and buried his face against Naruto's shoulder.
"Can't wait until Itachi is back so he can take over all that bullshit," he muttered.
"You survived another day," Naruto murmured and kissed his forehead, running his fingers across Sasuke's spine.
"Thank god for that," Sasuke mumbled.
They fell asleep like that, soothed by each other's presence.
