The Gilbert sisters stood beside Bonnie's car, patiently waiting for her to emerge. As soon as she stepped out, they shut the car doors and turned to face her.
"I'm not saying don't date the guy. I'm saying take it slow," Bonnie advised.
Elena pointed her finger at Bonnie. "You were the one who said go for it."
Bonnie crossed her arms, a troubled expression on her face. "Now I'm saying take it slow," she countered.
Adelaide tilted her head, watching Bonnie intently. "Why the about-face?" she inquired, pointing her finger towards her own face.
"It's not an about-face. You're single for the first time in your entire high school career. It's the perfect time to play the field," Bonnie suggested.
Elena chuckled, teasingly. "Oh, because I'm so that girl. Seriously, what are you not saying?"
"It's stupid," Bonnie mumbled, avoiding eye contact.
Elena sighed, growing impatient. "Spit it out, Bonnie."
Finally, Bonnie confessed, "I accidentally touched Stefan, and I got a really bad feeling."
Elena exchanged a glance with her sister before her eyes settled on Bonnie. "Is that it?" she questioned.
Bonnie, feeling uncomfortable, attempted to walk away, but Elena quickly grabbed her by the arm.
"Bonnie," Elena called firmly.
"It was bad, bad," Bonnie emphasized, looking between the Gilbert sisters.
Elena couldn't help but tease, her smile growing mischievous. "Is this the whole witch mojo thing again?"
Frustrated, Bonnie snapped, "You know what? I'm just concerned. This is me expressing concern about my best friend's new boyfriend."
Elena smiled warmly at Bonnie. "And I love you for it, I really do. But I feel good. It's been hard, but I'm starting to feel like things are getting back to normal. And you know what? Stefan is a big part of that."
As if on cue, Stefan appeared, walking towards them. "Good morning, Elena, Adelaide, Bonnie," he greeted with a genuine smile.
"I'm going to go find Caroline. She's not answering her phone. See you guys later," Bonnie said hurriedly before rushing off towards the school.
"Bonnie, wait!" Elena called after her, but Bonnie didn't turn back.
Stefan watched Bonnie walk away, a hint of sadness in his eyes. "She doesn't like me very much," he admitted.
Elena reassured him, saying, "She doesn't know you. She's my best friend, she's just looking out for me. She'll love you when she gets to know you." She beamed at Stefan, her confidence in their relationship evident.
Adelaide, clapping her hands together, announced, "Okay, I'm out of here," before making a beeline towards Matt. Just as she was about to speak, she noticed Tyler pointing his hand towards her.
"Walking, walking, walking. Yep, right into the sunset," Tyler joked.
Matt grabbed the football, engaging in a casual game with one of his teammates. "You're a dick" he started, but Tyler interrupted.
"While you just stand there, looking like one of those little yard gnomes," Tyler taunted.
Matt corrected him, "Garden gnomes."
Adelaide chimed in, "They're called garden gnomes, you ass." She glanced at Tyler, trying to keep things civil.
"What am I supposed to do, Ty? She made her choice," Matt reasoned.
Adelaide smiled warmly at Matt. "Find someone that deserves you because you're an amazing guy," she suggested. "No, not that. Let her know she made the wrong choice."
Confusion filled Matt's face as Tyler dropped his school bag and caught the ball before Matt could. "Tyler, don't! Ty!" Matt pleaded.
"Tyler, don't you dare!" Adelaide exclaimed, but it was too late. Tyler stepped back and hurled the ball at the back of Stefan's head. In an amazing display of reflexes, Stefan swiftly turned around, catching the ball mid-air.
"Holy shit!" Matt gasped, glancing at Adelaide, who wore a mischievous smirk.
Stefan shook the ball with a smile, while Tyler squinted in disbelief. Stefan threw the ball back, and Tyler caught it, stumbling slightly from the force.
"That's what you get for being a smart ass. " Adelaide started, pointing a finger at Tyler.
"Shut up," Tyler retorted, grabbing his bag and storming off, taking the ball with him.
Matt looked between Adelaide and Tyler, concern etched on his face. "Is everything okay between you guys?"
Adelaide shook her head. "No, and that's all I'm going to say on the matter." She latched her arm onto Matt's, pulling him closer. "Come on, we don't want to be late." They strolled towards the school.
"World War Ended in..."
Tanner stood in front of the classroom, his eyes scanning the expectant faces of his classmates. "Anyone got anything?" he asked, the silence hanging heavy in the air. Frustration etched his features as he turned to Miss Juan, hoping for a response. But she merely shrugged, as clueless as the rest of them.
Sighing, Tanner decided to answer his own question. "1945," he stated, the words dripping with disappointment. The room fell into a collective silence, broken only by the sound of pencils scribbling nervously.
Tanner's gaze drifted to Adelaide. "Pearl Harbor?" he ventured, seeking any reaction in the room. She glanced up from her history book, unsure if he was addressing her or Elena. Seeing his intense gaze directed at her, she responded, "1941."
"And the date?" Tanner pressed, hoping for further engagement.
Adelaide hesitated for a moment, her memory failing her. "I don't remember," she admitted, her voice laced with chagrin.
The sudden interruption came from Stefan, who had been quietly observing the discussion. "December 7," he interjected, a sense of pride in his voice. The fact that he had the answers seemed to amuse him.
"Thank you, Miss Gilbert," Tanner said, a hint of amusement playing on his lips as he regarded Stefan.
The room erupted with laughter, almost involuntarily, and Adelaide couldn't help but join in. Stefan's confident response had caught everyone off guard.
Tanner continued his line of questioning. "Very well. The fall of the Berlin Wall?"
"1989," Stefan replied promptly, his voice oozing with self-assurance. "I'm good with dates, sir."
Tanner's eyes crinkled at the corners as he regarded Stefan. "Are you? How good?"
"Pretty good," Stefan answered, the confidence evident in his tone. He turned to Adelaide, winking playfully before redirecting his attention to Tanner. "Anything else you'd like to test me on?"
Suppressing a smile, Tanner proceeded. "Keep it to the year. Civil Rights Act?"
"1964," Stefan quickly responded, his confidence unwavering.
"The John F. Kennedy assassination," Tanner challenged.
"1963," Stefan replied, a touch of solemnity in his voice.
"Martin Luther King?"
"1968," Stefan stated, his unwavering knowledge surprising his peers.
"Lincoln," Tanner pressed.
"1865," Stefan responded without a moment's hesitation.
"Roe v. Wade," Tanner probed.
"1973," Stefan shot back, his confidence unshaken.
"Brown v. Board."
"1954," Stefan answered effortlessly.
"The Battle of Gettysburg," Tanner inquired, almost curious to see Stefan stumble.
"1983," Stefan retorted confidently.
"The korean war."
Stefan stared at Tanner, a smug grin on his face, as he confidently announced, "1950 to 1953."
"Haha! It ended in '52," Tanner chuckled dismissively, barely giving Stefan a second glance before he turned around, making his way back to his desk.
Not one to back down, Stefan spoke up again, his voice unwavering, "Uh, actually, sir. It was '53."
Tanner furrowed his brows, turning back to face Stefan. Challenge glinted in his eyes as he demanded, "Look it up, somebody. Quickly!"
The classroom fell into a curious hush as eyes darted around the room, searching for confirmation. Students scrambled to find their phones and tablets, eager to settle the dispute. The tension thickened in the air as seconds turned into what felt like hours.
Finally, one of the students triumphantly held his phone aloft, the screen glowing with the answer. "He's right!" he exclaimed. "It ended in 1953."
A chorus of gasps and murmurs filled the room. Tanner's face reddened, his once confident demeanor slipping. Stefan couldn't help but chuckle softly as he exchanged a knowing smile with Adelaide.
Is that my sister I see?" Adelaide questioned with a smile. Elena smiled as she moved closer to her sister and Bonnie.
"Yep," Elena nodded her head and before she could say anything else, Adelaide wrapped her sister up in a hug. Adelaide was happy that Elena had returned to cheerleading.
"I can't be the sad girl forever," Elena said, and Adelaide smiled as she looked at her sister, but the smile on her face quickly vanished as she saw the look her sister was giving her. "What?" Adelaide questioned.
"I know you have been lying to me and Jeremy about how you're really doing." Before Adelaide could say anything, Elena spoke. "We used to tell each other everything, and ever since the accident," Elena paused before she continued, "I feel like you're pulling away from me."
"I don't mean to," Adelaide said. "I know," Elena said with a sad smile. "Don't hide how you feel. We're sisters, and I love you."
"I love you more."
"Never," Elena said, and both girls laughed.
"Good," Elena said as she turned to Bonnie. "Oh, and you're coming to dinner tonight."
Adelaide looked at her sister in confusion. "She is?" At the same time, Bonnie questioned, "I'm?"
Elena nodded her head. "You, me, Adelaide, and Stefan." Elena sighed as she saw the look on Bonnie's face. "You have to give him a chance." Elena begged her.
"But tonight's no good. Have you seen Caroline? I have texted her like a hundred times," Bonnie asked as she looked between the Gilbert sisters. Adelaide shook her head as she placed her arm around Bonnie's shoulder. "Come on, Bonnie. Give the guy a chance." Bonnie sighed. "Fine, I will go."
"Good," Elena smiled. Bonnie looked down at her phone. "Seriously, where is Caroline?"
"I haven't seen her all day," Adelaide said as she looked around, hoping to see Caroline, but she was nowhere to be seen. "Where the hell is she?" Adelaide questioned.
Bonnie sighed. "I will try her again."
While Bonnie dialed Caroline's number, Adelaide turned around when she heard loud music coming closer, and she saw an old Mustang driving towards their direction. Adelaide was shocked at what she saw; she hit her sister on the arm, and Elena turned around. "Uh," was all she said.
Bonnie turned around when she didn't hear anything from the Gilbert sisters. "Oh my god, that must be the mystery guy from the Grill," Bonnie told the sisters.
"That's no mystery guy," Elena mumbled.
Adelaide shook her head. "That's Damon Salvatore," she told Bonnie.
Bonnie looked between the sisters. "Salvatore, as in Stefan?"
Before either of the sisters could respond to Bonnie, Caroline came walking towards them. "I got the other brother, hope you don't mind," Caroline told Elena with a smirk.
Adelaide shook her head. Of course, Caroline would make everything a competition between her and Elena, and Adelaide knew it because Caroline was one of her best friends, and Elena was her sister.
"Elena, sweetie, why don't you just observe today? Okay?" Caroline told her before she turned back to the cheerleading squad. "Alright, let's start from the top," Caroline told the girls.
"Don“t be such a bitch." Adelaide mumbled under her breath.
"Gilbert! What the hell are you doing here!" the coach yelled from across the field, his voice resonating through the air.
Confused, Adelaide pointed her finger towards the school building behind him and said, "Um, I go to school here."
"I know that, smart ass, I mean, what are you doing on the field? I thought I told you that you're not allowed to come to practices anymore," the coach said, his frustration clear.
"You serious?" Adelaide questioned, her eyebrows furrowing.
"Whenever you're around," the coach replied, casting a disapproving glance towards two of the players, Matt and Tyler. "Those two can't focus on the game. I want you off the field."
"You for real?" Adelaide couldn't believe what she was hearing. Her presence alone was enough to disrupt the team?
"Now," the coach said firmly, pointing his thumb over his shoulder.
Realizing there was no point in arguing, Adelaide sighed and muttered, "We're not dating anymore," as she pointed a finger at Tyler. It seemed like her relationship with him had caused a rift she hadn't anticipated.
But before Adelaide could walk away, the coach snapped, "Now!"
Frustrated and hurt, she yelled, "I'm going!" She then turned back around to face her friends Elena and Bonnie, who had been watching the whole scene unfold.
"I'll see you at home," she said, her voice filled with disappointment, before turning away and walking across the field. Unbeknownst to her, there were a pair of brown eyes that had been watching her from afar.
Adelaide couldn't believe what she was hearing as she walked into her house. Elena's voice cut through the air, filled with annoyance and frustration. "Adelaide!" she yelled, her voice echoing through the halls. "Where have you been? You missed dinner!"
"Oh, god. I'm so sorry, Elena," Adelaide gasped, realizing her mistake. She had completely forgotten about the dinner plans. "I'm sorry. I lost track of time."
As Adelaide glanced towards her sister, she noticed Elena raise an eyebrow at something in the living room. Confusion washed over her face as she questioned, "Damon, Caroline?"
Indeed, there they were, sitting casually in the living room alongside Bonnie and Stefan. Adelaide turned to Elena, perplexed. "What are they doing here?"
Elena sighed and explained, "Bonnie told Caroline about the dinner, and they decided to show up."
"Damon?" Adelaide forced the words out, her voice tinged with concern.
"Caroline invited him," Elena responded matter-of-factly.
Adelaide wasn't sure how to feel about Damon's presence. There was a magnetic, yet turbulent, connection between them. "I don't want..." she began to protest.
But before Adelaide could finish her sentence, Caroline jumped in eagerly, her voice brimming with excitement. "Adelaide, you will never believe what happened. Tanner let Stefan on the team!"
Adelaide's eyes widened, her attention captured by Caroline's declaration. "I can't believe that Tanner let you on the team," Caroline continued, clearly impressed. "Tyler must be seething. Good for you!"
Stefan smiled modestly at the praise, but Damon couldn't resist adding his own two cents. "That's what I always tell him," he proclaimed, leaning back casually. "You have to engage. You can't just sit there and wait for life to come to you. You have to go get it."
Caroline nodded enthusiastically, clearly agreeing with Damon's philosophy. "Yeah, Elena wasn't so lucky today," she chimed in, turning to face Elena. "It's only because she missed summer camp. I don't know who you're going to learn the routines from."
Adelaide rolled her eyes at Caroline's comments, defending her sister without hesitation. "She will learn," she interjected firmly, her loyalty shining through.
Caroline let out an exasperated sigh, clearly not convinced. "I guess we could put her in the back," she suggested half-heartedly.
"What's your problem?" Adelaide snapped, her voice laced with frustration.
Caroline shrugged, seemingly unbothered by Adelaide's sharp response.
"You know, you don't seem like the cheerleading type, Elena," Damon chimed in, his gaze shifting to Elena.
"Oh, it's just because her parents died," Caroline explained casually, as if sharing a mundane piece of information. She then turned her gaze towards Elena, her tone dripping with arrogance. "Yeah, I mean, she's just totally going through a blah phase. She used to be more fun."
Adelaide couldn't believe what she was hearing. Her friend, Caroline, was attacking both Elena and herself. She felt a surge of anger rise within her. "What's wrong with you?" she questioned, her voice sharp and filled with disbelief.
"And I say that with complete sensitivity," Caroline added hastily, as if trying to save face.
Adelaide felt the weight of her friend's words press down on her. First, Caroline had put down Tyler, and now she was targeting Elena and herself. It was unbearable. "First you put Tyler down, now me and Elena! Who's next?" Adelaide seethed, unable to contain her anger any longer.
With that, Adelaide stormed out of the living room, leaving behind a tense atmosphere. As she made her way up the stairs, she couldn't help but wonder what had gotten into Caroline. Their friendship had always seemed unshakeable, but now, doubt crept into Adelaide's mind.
Adelaide lay on her bed, staring up at the ceiling, lost in her thoughts. Life had been overwhelming lately, and all she wanted was some peace and quiet. But just as she closed her eyes, a loud knock startled her. Sighing, she reluctantly got out of bed and made her way towards the door.
As she opened it, she saw her sister, Elena, standing there with a troubled expression on her face.
"Can I talk to you?" Elena questioned softly.
Adelaide nodded, her curiosity piqued. "Yeah, sure. What's going on?" They both walked towards Adelaide's bed and sat down, facing each other.
"I want to quit cheerleading," Elena confessed, her voice filled with uncertainty. Adelaide was taken aback. "Is this because of what Caroline said? Because she had no right to..."
Before Adelaide could finish her sentence, she noticed the sadness in Elena's eyes. "You don't like it anymore?" she asked gently.
Elena looked down, fidgeting with her fingers. "I just don't feel the same about cheerleading as I once did," she admitted.
Adelaide pondered for a moment, then smiled. "You should do what makes you happy, and if cheerleading isn't making you happy anymore, quit. But remember, you'll have to deal with Caroline." Elena groaned, and Adelaide couldn't help but laugh. "Don't worry, I'll protect you from the big bad Caroline Forbes," she reassured, squeezing her sister's hand.
"But she can be really mean," Elena muttered, a wistful smile on her face. Both girls burst into laughter, momentarily forgetting their worries. It was moments like these that reminded them of their unbreakable bond.
As they sat there, Adelaide noticed Elena's gaze drifting towards the locket she was wearing around her neck. "It's beautiful," Elena commented, pointing at it. Adelaide tilted her head in confusion. "The locket? Oh, that," she replied with a laugh. "I found it in my jewelry box." She shook her head, perplexed, as she couldn't recall wearing a locket when she got dressed that morning.
Elena peered at her, concern evident in her eyes. "Are you okay?" she asked, her voice filled with genuine worry. Adelaide hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine," she reassured, pulling Elena closer to her in a comforting embrace. "You want to stay here tonight?" Adelaide offered softly, a warm smile playing on her lips. She felt Elena nod against her shoulder.
"We haven't done this in forever," Elena remarked, her voice filled with nostalgia. Adelaide looked down at her sister, a wave of affection washing over her. "I miss this, too," she admitted, pulling the blanket over the both of them. They nestled against each other, finding solace in their closeness.
"I love you," Elena whispered as she closed her eyes, her voice barely audible. Adelaide's heart swelled with love as she kissed Elena's forehead.
"I love you too," she replied, her voice filled with sincerity. They held each other's hands, their grip tight as they drifted into a peaceful slumber.
For the first time in months, the Gilbert sisters experienced a restful night's sleep, knowing that together, they could weather any storm that came their way.
