The San Joaquin County fair was being held this weekend in Stockton. Tara insisted they take the kids. Even with baby Samantha still being less than 6 months old. Jax agreed, but was adamant that at least one of the guys go with them. Just in case.
After riding all the rides several times, eating tons of junk food and visiting the booths that different organizations had set up, it was time to go home. On the way home Thomas and Abel were jacked up on sugar. Hooping and hollering and just being all around boys.
Tara suggested they stop at the newly (or at least fairly new) built scenic byway rest stop. It was like a pit stop for travelers who needed to use the restroom, have lunch or dinner as a picnic, needed to stretch their legs and walk the nature trail that highlighted the impressive views of the rolling hills and canyons of northern California. The nature trail was now a popular place for people to hike and just exercise safely. It also held a smoking area, a bathroom area for dogs, and even a fairly decent sized gas station and café.
After making the boys use the rest room facilities, Tara urged Jax to let the boys run off some of their pent up energy by taking them along the nature trail. She stayed with Samantha on a shaded park bench, breast feeding her. As she hummed and fed Samantha she looked around the bustling area.
Samantha finished feeding. Tara removed her breast feeding cover, adjusted her bra and shirt then stood with her, laying her against her chest so she could burp her, "Hey baby girl. Be good and burp for mommy, okay?"
Walking up and down the side walk, Tara heard an, "Tara? Tara Knowles?" Tara turned around to see her cousin Lydia and a friend.
"Lydia! Wow! What are you doing here?"
"Just touring Cali! Got out to stretch my legs a bit. What about you?"
"My husband and I took the kids to the county fair. He's with our boys now," Tara replied still soothing Samantha.
"Wow! I didn't even know you were married! Last I heard you went to Chicago to go to school and work in a hospital….."
But Tara had stopped listening. In those few seconds of 'dead air', she heard something. Cocking her head to the side, she heard this faint cry in the air. Squinting her eyes in concentration, Tara looked down at Samantha, confirming it wasn't her. She looked to the car that sat alone in a parking spot across from the sidewalk she stood on. It was partially parked in a shaded area.
"Oh wait a minute, that's not true. I read something about you being arrested for accessory to …." Lydia spoke to Tara.
But Tara was walking away from her, towards the car. Her hand on the back of Samantha's head, Tara bent down to look inside the car. A wave of anger and shock hit her.
"Oh God," Tara mumbled to herself. Quickly Tara handed Samantha to a shocked Lydia, then she began tugging on the door handle. When she found it locked she began digging through her purse. Not finding anything hard or strong enough to break a window, she turned her head to the place designated for smoking. "HAPPY! HELP!"
Dropping and stubbing out his cigarette, Happy ran over without hesitation, "What is it Doc?"
"There's a baby in the car! Doors locked!" she yelled at him and began pounding on the window, "Hey Buddy. It's okay, we are going to get you out," She soothed to the screaming toddler who was red and sweating profusely. "Lydia! Call 911!" Tara barked at her still dumbfounded cousin.
Happy charged up, pulling out the steel collapsible baton he carried (because doing what they do you and what they have done, you just never know what might go down), he flicked it out to extend it. "Get back!" he ordered Tara, and began whacking at the passenger's side window.
Tara stood by nervously until Happy broke the window, reached his gloved hand and arm in and unlocked the doors. Yanking the door open, she reached in and began unbuckling the screaming baby, "Happy I need a bottle of water. We need to get him cooled down," she cradled the baby to her chest and began soothing him.
Tara began taking the baby to the shaded area where Lydia had finally taken shelter with a now screaming Samantha, as she heard, "What the fuck? What are you doing with my kid bitch?!" Tara turned just in time to see a very pissed off man come charging at her. Then she saw her husband come flying out of the corner of her eye and tackle the man to the ground catching him in the mid-section.
AN: I hope this doesn't seem forced and is not confusing for anyone. Thank you for still caring about this story. :)
