Eddie felt her hands shaking. She'd just got off the phone with pop who was on his way to the hospital in bus with Cora. She couldn't get the word seizure out of her head. Amanda got Eddie to the hospital. It had been an hour or two before the end of her shift. Still in her uniform she entered the emergency room and went towards the admit desk.

"Excuse me? I believe the EMT's brought in an 18-month-old baby girl. Her name's Cora Reagan. I'm her mother, Eddie Reagan. She's my daughter. Can you take me to her?"

The nurse behind the admit desk gave Eddie a sympathetic look and shook her head.

"I'm sorry. I can't allow you in the trauma room with her. The doctors are working on her now."

But Eddie wasn't having it.

"Please I need to see my daughter. I don't want her to be alone."

The nurse nodded in understanding.

"I'll see what I can find out. I've put in a call to your husband Doctor Reagan. He's busy with a delivery right now, but he should be done soon…"

Eddie nodded and sat back down in the hard plastic chairs in the waiting area. She let her head sink down into her hands and begin to sob. Pop had gone to contact the rest of the family. Looking up, she saw Jamie coming down the hallway hurriedly. She placed the palms of her hands on her knees and rubbed them absently. Soon Jamie was kneeling down in front of her, worry crossing his face.

"Ed look at me, are you hurt? What happened?"

Eddie felt her bottom lip begin to tremble then the waterworks began.

"Cora…"

She watched Jamie's facial expression change from worried to scared.

"What happened? Where is she?"

Eddie quickly explained herself while looking up at Jamie with red rimmed eyes.

"She had a seizure. Pop called and told me they were on the way to the hospital. The ER docs wouldn't let me stay with her. Jamie, is she going to be ok?"

Watching as Jamie shook her head, she heard the tone of his voice change.

"What? Oh my god. I'll go find out. Where's pop?"

Eddie wrung her hands in nervousness.

""He went to make some calls. Let everyone know what's going on. Find Linda for me please. She's working today."

She saw as Jamie nodded and watched as Linda came towards them.

"Cora is going to be just fine. She had a febrile seizure. Common in children who have high fevers. Docs are working her up now and giving her something to bring her fever down. She should be ready to go up to a room soon. I'm off shift now so I can wait with you if you'd like."

Eddie and Jamie nodded, and Linda took a seat on the other side of Eddie. Eddie folded herself into Jamie's arms and cried some more. Ten minutes later, she looked up into Jamie's eyes and went over how she felt.

"Jamie, when I got the call from pop, my whole world just stopped. I should've recognized the signs. She's been really fussy the last few days. I really thought it was because of her tooth coming in."

Jamie pulled Eddie into a kiss and then leaned his forehead against hers.

"That's unknowable babe. Sometimes these things happen. She could have a cold or the flu. Or a virus. She's going to be ok."

Linda looked at the couple and put in her two cents.

"She's been calling for both of you. She's scared. The nurses are doing their best to calm her down as they cool her off."

Jamie felt a lump in his throat, but he swallowed to help it dissipate. He had to remain strong. Cora was going to be ok. He had to remain objective. His little girl needed him, but he also needed to keep it together for Eddie. Just as he was about to give Eddie some words of assurance, a doctor came up to them with a look of relief on his face.

"Doctor Reagan, Mrs. Reagan, your daughter Cora is stable. We gave her some baby Tylenol to bring her fever down. We also gave her something to sleep. She's resting comfortably. I can take you up to see her."

Eddie was the first to get to her feet. Jamie followed suit and the couple followed the doctor towards Cora's room. Jamie felt his stomach clenching and tried to will it to stop. It wasn't until he and Eddie were inside her room that he let his defenses down. There in the open and heated crib was Cora, sleeping without a care in the world. Except for the fact that she had tiny leads attached to her chest and wires to them that went to a machine off to the side.

It was monitoring her heart rate. Jamie approached Cora carefully and took his stethoscope from around his neck and correlated with the machine. He listened to Cora's heartbeat. From the corner of his eye, he could see Eddie was tense. A small smile came to his face, and he put his stethoscope back behind his neck. He looked over at Eddie and grabbed for her hand and squeezed it.

"She's doing just fine sweetheart. Her heart rate and her breathing are normal. She's comfortable."

A nurse came over towards Cora to check on her. She smiled over at Eddie. Eddie took this moment to speak.

"Can I hold her?"

The nurse nodded and reached into the heated crib, placing Cora in Eddie's arms. Eddie shifted her up to her shoulder as she sat down in the rocking chair. Jamie sat in another rocking chair to the left of her and put a hand to her back. He took a moment to speak to Cora.

"Everything's going to be ok Cora. Mommy and daddy are here."

Jamie was sure everything was going to be alright. Maybe they would just keep her in the hospital overnight. He was going to keep close tabs on everything they were doing to make her better. Eddie rubbed Cora's tiny back.

"Mommy's here baby girl. I'm right here. Daddy is too. You're going to be ok."

Eddie felt tears coming to her eyes once more and she started rocking the tiny baby against her shoulder. Jamie leaned over and gave a soft kiss to her lips and then placed a kiss to the crown of Cora's head. Eddie closed her eyes and kept rocking the sleeping baby against her shoulder. Jamie put in his two cents.

"She's going to be ok babe. We'll all get through this together. If it makes you feel better, I'll ask Doctor Clarkson to take another blood sample. I'd order the labs myself, but I'm not a pediatrician."

Eddie opened her eyes as Doctor Clarkson came into the room. She was a taller woman in her early forties with slight peppering's of gray lining her otherwise light brown hair.

"The ER docs told me what happened. Let's see how Cora's doing."

Eddie listened to Jamie's response.

"Can you have some blood drawn as well. I don't want to miss anything."

Doctor Clarkson gave Jamie a confident smile.

"We work together. That's what matters. Eddie may I see Cora for a minute? I promise to give her right back."

Eddie reluctantly gave Cora to Doctor Clarkson. She remained seated in the rocking chair and watched as Doctor Clarkson examined Cora. She wrung her hands in nervousness again.

"How is she doing Doctor Clarkson?"

Jamie waited with bated breath as Doctor Clarkson explained her findings.

"Her heart rate and breathing are all normal for infant her age. She still has a slight fever. But we've got her on baby Tylenol and getting fluids into her. I'd like to keep her here for a few days and get some more tests done to see what's going on. I'll add that blood test you asked for Jamie. You have my words that I'll find out what's going on with this otherwise usually healthy little girl."

Jamie nodded his head and shook hands with Doctor Clarkson as soon as she placed Cora into Eddie's arms once more.

"Thank you, Caia. I appreciate everything your doing for us."

Doctor Clarkson nodded and gave her own words of confidence and encouragement.

"It's all part of a day's work. Oh, wanted to let you know that Doctor Carollson got baby boy Michael's free. He's completely healthy. 8 pounds and 8 ounces."

Jamie let out a sigh of relief. That was at least one weight off his shoulders.

It has been several hours now since Cora had been admitted. Eddie had got back to the precinct to change out of her uniform and back into her street clothes. She could see Cora begin to stir in her arms. She was waking up. As soon as she opened her eyes and saw Eddie, she began to cry.

"Mama…"

Eddie felt tears coming to her eyes.

"I know baby. Mommy's right here. It's ok. Daddy's here too."

Cora wasn't having it though. Eddie knew she must be getting hungry. But she wasn't sure she was going to keep solids down right now. Cora was grabbing at pieces of her shirt. Eddie situated herself and listened to Cora cooing. Jamie looked at Eddie and cocked his head sideways.

"I thought you said you weren't breastfeeding anymore?"

Eddie looked up from Cora and crumbled.

"It's just a comfort measure bub. Once she's better, I'll completely wean her."

Jamie sighed, he knew it wasn't his place or decision to make. He wasn't a mother. It was Eddie's choice.

"Ok. I don't want to be one of those husbands that belittles his wife. You have my support no matter what you choose. You have my word. You always have."

Eddie turned her attention back to Cora and smiled down at her.

"Don't worry sweet girl, you have mommy and daddy to comfort you right now. You'll be better in no time. We love you baby girl."

Cora cooed and continued eating. She was content with being close to her mother at the moment. Eddie became relieved. Things were going to get better. This was a bump in the road.
