With that, he hung up. For some reason I was fretting and sweating over the upcoming interaction that was no doubt going to occur when Edward sees my stuff leave. I grabbed an extra bag from my closet and came downstairs. Grabbing the truck keys as I went, I called out, "Dad, you ready?"
He yelled back that he would be out in a minute. So, I went to the truck and turned it on.
As I was sitting in the truck, I realized that I did not know when it had shown back up. I had been ran here by Jasper yesterday and my truck was stuck in the Cullen's driveway. I texted Jasper. Who got my truck home for me?
His reply was almost instant. Rosalie. She fixed it and brought it over early this morning.
That surprised me. I thought she hated me. Why would she have fixed my truck and brought it back to me. I did not know how to respond but I didn't need to. My dad finally joined me, and we drove across town and out into the back road that led to their place. My hands gripping the steering wheel harder and harder.
"Look Bells, I should have realized that breaking up was hard on you. You were just so happy this morning, I didn't think about it. We can get your stuff another day. Or I can do it on my own if you like." Dad placed his hand over my white knuckles.
I let out a sigh and forced my hands to loosen some. "No, it's okay. It needs to be done. I will never be with Edward again. I think I have outgrown him. I just don't want to think about it much."
He took his hand back but grunted low. I focused on driving and staying relaxed. It was difficult but I finally made it to the house. My dad swore under his breath when the house had come into view. I remembered that feeling from the first time I had seen it as well. The feeling of complete insignificance next to this extravagant home.
"This is their house?"
"Yup." I popped the 'p' and turned the truck to back the bed up to the porch. In case one of them was going to help me against my suggestion. I needed to reduce the chance of sun reaching them.
I got out and my dad followed, going behind and lowering the tailgate. At that moment, I thought I had heard a crash at the back of the house and froze.
"What was that?" My dad exclaimed, ready to go to the back of the house to check things out. He was reaching for his gun, even though he was not wearing it.
That moment Jasper came out the front door but kept to the shade. His skin glowed slightly, but hopefully my dad's distraction over what I was presuming to be Edward's response, would limit him noticing.
"Morning sir. We've got all of Isabella's items right here. I checked personally to ensure nothing would be missing. Let me help load them."
My dad acknowledged him with a nod but asked about the noise. "When we got out, there was a crash. Did you not hear it?"
"Oh, that? You know, house full of us teens. Sometimes things get a little out of hand. I did not hear anyone call out for help or in pain, so likely one of my brother's was playing baseball too close to the house again."
My dad nodded and seemed to accept the explanation and began helping put the bags in the back of my truck. I tried my best to keep him focused on playing Tetris with my bags, so he did not notice Jasper's skin.
I did not have much, so it did not really take that long. I closed the tailgate and smiled. "Thanks Jasper, for everything."
"Yes, Jasper. I have not officially met you before but thank you. You should make sure your brothers do not play baseball near the house next time. I might need to talk to your foster parents, make sure they know. When are you all heading out camping, by the way?"
Jasper tipped an imaginary hat. "Yes sir. We will make sure they know, and I am sure dad and mom would appreciate a call from you about it, Mr. Swan. And when we heard Isabella here was coming for her stuff, we held off leaving for a few moments. No real loss. Camping will still be there."
My dad nodded his head and smiled. Once in the truck he turned to me, "Now that one I would not have minded. Knows his manners."
I smirked, knowing that every vampire in the house had heard him with their super hearing. It was good they had the reminder that the one they called wild and out of control was the one that could please a human better than the rest of them.
"Let's go home," I said as I put the truck in gear and drove away.
On the drive back to town, I thought I saw red flash in the trees. My heart rate picked up, but I tried to calm myself saying it was only a bird.
"So, the tall polite one, Jasper, was it? How old is he? Why isn't he away at college somewhere? He looks too old for high school."
I swallowed the chuckle that wanted to escape. "Well, he just graduated same as me. I believe we are around the same age."
"Huh. Could have sworn he was older." Again, I held my tongue because although he was right, he was also not right enough. "Was he originally from the south before being fostered by the Cullen's?" my dad asked as a follow up.
I nodded as I pulled into town. "Yes, Texas. Sometimes you can hear his accent in his voice. Would you like some coffee dad?"
"Sure, I guess." I nodded and pulled into the diner and parked in a spot.
"I need to go next door first to the store for some things, then I will be over to get a coffee as well."
"I could go with you."
"Umm, Dad, I need some . . . feminine products." I wanted to call Jasper but did not want my dad to hear why. This was the only excuse I knew would work for some guaranteed privacy.
"Oh, right. I'm going to get a coffee and perhaps some pie." He was a bit red in the face and I am sure I was too. But he practically ran inside, leaving me to myself.
Exiting the truck, I locked up before going into the pharmacy next door. I made my way to the bathroom for some privacy and then pulled out my phone. I noticed I had more missed calls. Again, I ignored them and felt relieved I had kept it on silent this morning.
I dialed Jasper and he picked up on the first ring.
"Hello. This is becoming a bit of a habit for you. Twice in one day and it is not even noon yet."
I swallowed, "Yes. Sorry. I just didn't know who else to trust." My voice wavered and a hiccup surprised me at the end.
