Emmett's laugh boomed around the room, and I instinctively winced at the noise. Rosalie chuckled in response. "Well, it may have seemed that way. But I just didn't think you were making a good decision."
"So, you treated me rudely because I wanted to become a vampire to stay with Edward?"
She shook her head. "No. Not because you wanted to become a vampire. Yes, I envy you being human and have a hard time understanding why you want to throw that away so easily to become one of us. I don't think you really know what that will cost you. However, what really bothered me, was you wanting to be with Edward. I treated you rudely because you wanted to stay with Edward."
I shook my head and stared at my hands fiddling in my lap. "I don't think I understand you."
Rosalie sighed and when I looked up at her, her head was turned away, staring into a memory that no one could join her in. "I was engaged before I became a vampire. My life had been perfect, and I was beautiful, even then. I was engaged to the most eligible bachelor, Royce King II. I now know that what I had was a false relationship with him, built on social norms and expectations. But I loved the idea of being in love. One night, I was walking home from a friend's place late at night and I came across Royce and his friends. They were very drunk." She paused, her eyes darkening. Emmett came over and sat on the bed behind her and held her, just soothing her. After a moment she continued, quieter than before. "He and his friends brutalized me. They took advantage of me and left me for dead. It was then that Carlisle came across me and changed me – to save me."
Fresh tears dripped down my cheeks and I reached out to wrap my arms around her shoulders. She was stiff but allowed it. "Oh Rosalie, I am so sorry." I just held her, knowing there was nothing I could say that could help or change the past.
After a few moments, she turned towards me with a weak smile. "So, you see Bella, I just couldn't stand to watch someone else be in a relationship that wasn't both ways. His abuse may not have been physical, but mental strain can do just as much damage. He controlled you. You were his puppet, and you didn't even care. But because he was family and Carlisle's golden child, I wasn't allowed to say anything. I thought perhaps I could scare you away."
"That's a shit way to treat anyone – even if for a good reason." Peter spoke from his spot guarding at the window.
"Peter, stop. She certainly has a point. Eddie-boy was manipulative and frustratingly controlling." I admonished him.
He turned to me with a chuckle. "What? You think that is the only way she could have dealt with that? We all have shit in our pasts. Stuff we all would feel best forgetting. But we are vampires. We can't forget. Anything. Even when we try. Just saying it like it is, works like a charm in most circumstances."
I went to speak again but Rosalie placed her hand on my arm. "No Bella. He is right. Sometimes, I act like I have everything all together. But I am often scared of the past repeating itself. I know that Emmett would never hurt me, but it doesn't mean I handle seeing others in bad relationships well. I should have spoken up. I am just glad you saw it for what it was before it was too late. Before you became one of us."
"Okay. So, what now?" I turned to glancing between all of the vampires in the room. Emmett at some point returned to the window but I wasn't sure I noticed when it had happened.
"We wait." Peter said.
"We should fight." Emmett responded.
Rosalie sighed. "That's my Em, always looking for some fun." She rolled her eyes while shaking her head.
"You wouldn't even know the first thing of staying alive in a fight. That bitch is crazy and ruthless. Some 'Bambi' eaters are not going to be able to stand a chance against her." Peter growled out.
Emmett simply laughed and waggled his eyebrows before replying, "Well, 'Bambi' does give such amazing fur between the teeth. You should try it sometime."
"Like hell!"
Rosalie piped in, "Look Peter, all Emmett is meaning is that Jasper is out there with Alice, Edward, Carlisle, and Esme, searching for Victoria. He just wants to join."
"Great, the success of this mission rests in one competent fighter, a pixie, a snob mind reader, a pacifist, and a perpetual mother. We are doomed."
Standing to my feet, I placed my fists on my hips, facing Peter. "Now I know why Jasper said no one is ever excited to meet you. You have the manners of a bull moose in rutting season."
He tsked as he looked back at me. "Do you really think that Esme or Alice are able to make the necessary decisions to kill Victoria?"
I shook my head. "I know that out of those ones, the only one who can kill without struggling over it first is Jasper. The others are not the best equipped. And most of them are confused and think I should still be with Eddie-boy. But that doesn't mean we disregard them helping."
The sly smile was the opposite of what I expected to be on his face. "Well, well. You are surprising. We can work with that." Peter crossed his arms as he stood in front of me. "At the last check in, they were having trouble capturing her. They managed to stop her killing one of your other friends, but she manages to escape every time."
"An ability perhaps?" Rosalie asked next to me.
Peter simply nodded but didn't reply.
"So, she has an ability that prevents her from being caught." All eyes focused on me, and I chewed my lip. "Well, then we need to give her a reason not to use it."
Emmett cocked his head, "And what would that be? Blood? A human?"
I stood up, took a deep breath, and replied, "Not just any human. Me."
