Chapter 31: Missing Father

Tang Shuyi left the study only to see Xiao Yuming's two attendants, Yantai and Shimo, kneeling outside the door.

Approaching them, she said, "You belong to the Second Young Master. His well-being reflects on you. Think carefully about what's truly good for your master, and what isn't."

Yantai and Shimo, kneeling on the ground, trembled in fear. Lady Hou's presence was overwhelming, comparable to the Marquis himself.

Both attendants heaved a few heavy breaths before rising and scurrying to the study door, peeking through the crack. Yantai said, "Young Master, please don't engage in such dangerous antics again. The mere thought terrifies me."

He was the more faint-hearted one, still shaking at the memory of Lady Hou's glare.

Inside the study, Xiao Yuming remained silent. Shimo pressed his mouth to the crack and whispered, "Young Master, give us a sign. Has the lady punished you with kneeling or fasting?"

He glanced around, and, seeing no one, lowered his voice further, "If it's kneeling, don't be as naive as the Eldest Young Master. Nobody's watching; you might as well lie down."

"How is that okay?" Yantai interjected. "The Eldest Young Master's knees swelled for days after a night of kneeling. If our Young Master gets off scot-free, Lady Hou will definitely notice."

Shimo: "..."

"Enough," came Xiao Yuming's voice from within, "Mother just wants me to think about my future. I'm fine. You two go and gather some information about Yan Wu."

Hearing this, Yantai and Shimo complied.

Meanwhile, Tang Shuyi had returned to Shi'an Garden. Barely seated, she received an invitation from the Wu residence, indicating that Lady Wu and her daughter planned a visit the next day. Without hesitation, Tang Shuyi sent a reply, welcoming them warmly.

She was curious to meet the protagonist of the story. Ideally, she didn't want to clash with the protagonist. After all, the main character of a book is invariably blessed with a halo of fortune. If she could amicably call off the engagement with Xiao Yuming, that would be best.

However, she wondered what the protagonist thought. Nonetheless, if Wu Jingyun insisted on clinging to their Marquis residence, Tang Shuyi would not hold back.

At dinner time, Tang Shuyi sent food to the study. She dined with Xiao Yuming and Xiao Yuzhu.

Xiao Yuchen had some matters to attend to today and was unaware of Xiao Yuming's situation. Tang Shuyi informed him and then said, "I don't think he's the type to sit down and study. I was considering letting him practice martial arts, but that should only be if he likes it. Anyway, he can't continue on like this without direction."

"If the second brother could practice martial arts and join the military, it would be a decent path, especially since both our grandfather and father served," Xiao Yuchen thought. After finishing his meal, he planned to visit Xiao Yuming and have a serious talk with him.

Tang Shuyi wasn't particularly intent on Xiao Yuming following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father. It was more important to her what he liked and was suited for.

She said, "If he truly possesses the abilities of your grandfather and father, your maternal grandfather and I will naturally plan for him. But the key still lies with his own choices."

Whether in ancient times or the present, teenagers are always a source of worry. In modern society, fourteen is the age for high school entrance exams, and everyone hopes their child gets into a top school. In ancient times, fourteen or fifteen-year-olds were essentially considered adults, with families already plotting their future careers and life paths.

"Madam Wu and several young ladies will visit the residence tomorrow. What are your plans?" Tang Shuyi shifted the topic to ask Xiao Yuchen.

Xiao Yuchen was startled upon hearing this; these days, he had been busy with his studies and managing various affairs. Of course, he often thought of his sister Qin, who was suffering in the village. He had almost completely forgotten about Miss Wu Er.

"I will follow mother's wishes," he responded.

"Good," Tang Shuyi didn't intend for Xiao Yuchen to meet Wu Jingyun tomorrow, so she added, "If you're busy with other matters, then attend to those."

Xiao Yuchen sighed with relief. He was genuinely worried that Tang Shuyi might insist on him meeting Wu Jingyun tomorrow. He didn't want to meet such a ruthless woman, and even if they met, he wouldn't know what to say.

"Tomorrow, there is a literary gathering at Yunxi Tower. I'll attend with my cousin," he said.

Tang Shuyi took a sip of soup and then asked, "Where do the capital's literati usually hold such gatherings?"

A literary gathering is a meeting of intellectuals. They come together to recite poetry, compose writings, or discuss current political issues.

Xiao Yuchen pondered for a moment and replied, "In the capital, such gatherings usually take place in more cultured taverns, like Yunxi Tower, Mingyue Pavilion, and the like."

"Are they all taverns? How large are these places? Are they as big as a residence with three courtyards?" Tang Shuyi inquired.

"How large can a tavern be? It's just a small courtyard," Xiao Yuchen replied.

Tang Shuyi appeared contemplative upon hearing his words. She thought of modern-day business clubs, which encompass dining, accommodation, entertainment, and conference facilities. Opening such a club in the capital would likely be a profitable venture.

She had a rough idea in her mind and decided to conduct a market survey later on.

After finishing the meal, Xiao Yuchen stayed to chat with Tang Shuyi for a while before leaving. Instead of returning to his own courtyard, he walked towards Xiao Huai's study. The young servant in charge of the study hurriedly greeted him and said, "Young Master, the madam has ordered that the second young master needs peace and quiet, and no one is to disturb him."

Xiao Yuchen hummed an acknowledgment, gestured for the servant to leave, and then stood silently in front of the study. He wanted to impart some wisdom to Xiao Yuming, but he couldn't think of what to say. Mainly, he felt he hadn't been a good enough elder brother to have the right to advise him.

After a long silence, he turned and left without saying a word.

In the study, Xiao Yuming heard the noise outside and knew that Xiao Yuchen was there. He thought Xiao Yuchen would lecture him in his usual long-winded manner, as he had done a few days ago, but unexpectedly, Xiao Yuchen left without saying a word, leaving Xiao Yuming feeling somewhat lost.

Lying on the small couch behind the screen, he tilted his head and gazed through the window at the dark night outside. Suddenly, he remembered a time in his childhood when he played hide-and-seek. He sneaked into the study when the guard was distracted and hid under this very couch, eventually falling asleep unintentionally, causing a commotion as everyone searched for him.

It was ultimately his father who heard his snores and pulled him out from under the couch. He remembered his father's serious face and the hand raised high to strike him, yet when it landed on his bottom, it wasn't very painful. He also remembered his father saying repeatedly how much he resembled him.

He missed his father terribly.

Tears unconsciously welled up in his eyes, and just as they were about to spill over, Xiao Yuming stretched out his hand and fiercely wiped them away. A man should bleed, not cry.

Chapter 32: No Less Than a Man

Shi'an Garden

Tang Shuyi was instructing Cuicui to bring some bedding to the study. She had confined Xiao Yuming to the study not to starve or freeze him, but to give him a chance to ponder his life.

After receiving her orders, Cuicui left, and Tang Shuyi took a walk in the yard with Xiao Yuzhu, repeating the old saying, "A hundred steps after a meal will keep you healthy until ninety-nine."

Xiao Yuzhu laughed upon hearing this and then asked Tang Shuyi with her little face upturned, "Are you punishing second brother because he helped fifth brother Yan leave home?"

"That's part of the reason," Tang Shuyi replied softly. "Running away from home is the last thing one should do. Look at Yanwu; his running away has unsettled the entire Nanling Manor. Fortunately, this time he was somewhat clever, hiding in Meihua Alley. If he had left the capital and encountered villains or enemies of the Nanling family, his life might have been at risk. If he had died out there, Lord and Lady Nanling would have been devastated."

Xiao Yuzhu nodded solemnly upon hearing this, and Tang Shuyi continued, "If you have any issues, you should discuss them with your family. There's always a solution. Running away from home is the last resort, especially for girls."

Xiao Yuzhu nodded again. She would never run away from home. Without maids and servants to wait on her, unable to eat and sleep well, she thought anyone who ran away from home was foolish.

After walking in the yard for a while, the mother and daughter prepared to wash up and rest. The eastern wing was not yet fully tidied, so Xiao Yuzhu still shared a room with Tang Shuyi. After washing up, they lay in bed, and Xiao Yuzhu asked her mother to tell her a story.

Tang Shuyi thought for a moment and then recounted the story of the famous female poet Li Qingzhao from her previous life. Xiao Yuzhu listened with shining eyes. Tang Shuyi even recited Li Qingzhao's famous poem: "To live as a hero, or die as a ghostly hero. Even now, I think of Xiang Yu and refuse to cross the river eastward."

Xiao Yuzhu didn't fully understand the poem but could feel its imposing aura. She said, "She was a very formidable woman."

"Yes," Tang Shuyi replied as she tucked her in, "she was a woman who stood equal to men."

Xiao Yuzhu pondered for a moment, then said with pride, "Mother, you too are no less than a man."

Tang Shuyi smiled, pinched her smooth cheek, and said with a laugh, "My little flatterer."

"I'm telling the truth," Xiao Yuzhu insisted earnestly.

"Alright, Mother knows. Let's sleep now."

Xiao Yuzhu closed her eyes and soon fell asleep. Tang Shuyi, however, spent some time reading by the lamplight before settling down for the night. In ancient times, there wasn't much entertainment, and evenings were often spent reading to pass the time.

The next day, Tang Shuyi rose at dawn, freshened up, and took a few strolls around the courtyard before waking Xiao Yuzhu. After Xiao Yuzhu got ready, Xiao Yuchen also arrived, dressed strikingly today. He wore a crescent-white robe paired with a silver-grey cloak and a green jade crown on his head, truly dazzling to behold.

"Big Brother looks really handsome today," Xiao Yuzhu couldn't help but exclaim.

Xiao Yuchen blushed at such straightforward praise. Tang Shuyi chuckled and said to Xiao Yuzhu, "It's not proper to say a man is 'good-looking'; you should say 'handsome.'"

Xiao Yuzhu immediately corrected herself: "Big Brother is very handsome today."

Somewhat embarrassed, Xiao Yuchen cleared his throat and asked, "Is breakfast ready?"

Tang Shuyi stopped teasing him, and the three of them sat down to eat together. After breakfast, Xiao Yuchen left for his gathering, and Xiao Yuzhu went to the family school. However, before leaving, she sneakily took a good amount of snacks, which Tang Shuyi pretended not to notice.

Xiao Yuzhu didn't head straight to the family school after leaving the Shi'an Garden. Instead, she first went to the front yard study.

The study room door was still firmly locked. Xiao Yuzhu approached the door, peered through the crack, but saw nothing. She then called out softly, "Second Brother, are you there?"

Having just finished breakfast and contemplating life while reclining on the couch, Xiao Yuming walked to the door and leaned against the frame, replying, "Where else would I be if not here?"

"Can't you pick locks? Maybe you could pick the lock and get out," Xiao Yuzhu remarked, thinking her Second Brother was quite capable, even skilled in lock-picking.

Xiao Yuming was speechless for a moment, "The lock is on the outside; how am I supposed to pick it from here?"

Xiao Yuzhu widened her eyes in surprise, "You actually want to pick the lock?"

Xiao Yuming: "…Go do whatever you're supposed to be doing."

Xiao Yuzhu wasn't offended by his tone and took out the snacks she had previously sneaked away. Seeing the narrow gap in the door, she realized the whole packet wouldn't fit through. So, after some thought, she took out a piece and slid it through the crack, chiding as she did so, "Why did you have to do such a foolish thing, helping Yan Wuge to run away from home? How silly!"

Xiao Yuming caught the snack pushed through the crack and stuffed it into his mouth, retorting, "What would a child like you know?"

Xiao Yuzhu huffed, "How would I not know? After Yan Wuge ran away, did he have maids and servants to wait on him? Could he eat whatever he wanted?"

Xiao Yuming: "…"

Xiao Yuzhu didn't expect a reply and pushed another piece of snack through, saying, "Surely he had nothing, right? So, tell me, isn't he silly?"

Xiao Yuming accepted another piece of the offered snack, "What do you know? Yan Wu's father is making him sit for the scholar examination."

Xiao Yuzhu retorted, "Is it more comfortable to study at home, waited on hand and foot, or to endure hardship outside?"

Xiao Yuming: "…"

Xiao Yuzhu huffed again, "I call you fools, and you won't even admit it."

Xiao Yuming: "…"

Xiao Yuzhu had to attend her family school and couldn't stay long. After stuffing a few more snacks through the crack, she asked before leaving, "What snack would you like for the afternoon?"

"Rose pastry," Xiao Yuming replied thoughtfully.

"Got it."

After Xiao Yuzhu left, Xiao Yuming reflected on her earlier words and muttered, "She does have a point."

Tang Shuyi naturally knew what Xiao Yuzhu did with the snacks. She didn't stop her, intending to nurture the siblings' bond. She even instructed the kitchen to prepare extra pastries, especially the rose pastries, Xiao Yuming's favorite.

"With his carefree nature, how come he's so fond of sweets?" Tang Shuyi mused about Xiao Yuming's taste, unable to resist discussing it with her maids, Cui Zhu and Cui Yun.

Both maids laughed, with Cui Yun adding, "I've heard that people who like sweets have a soft heart. Our Second Young Master appears carefree, but he's actually the most tender-hearted."

Tang Shuyi smiled, pointing at her playfully, "You sure have a way with words."

"I'm only speaking the truth," Cui Yun replied with a smile.

After sharing a laugh, Tang Shuyi checked the time. The Wu family's arrival was imminent, so she said to Cui Zhu, "Go wait by the main gate. We mustn't neglect our guests."

"Yes."

With her affirmation, Cui Zhu turned to leave. Through the recent events, she had roughly guessed that the marital arrangement between the eldest son of her household and Miss Wu from the second branch might fall through. However, the more it seemed so, the more meticulously they needed to attend to their guests, leaving no room for criticism.

Chapter 33: Just Right

The back residence of the Wu family was bustling with activity this morning. Lady Wu and her two biological daughters had started dressing up early, with Wu Jingshu rummaging through her closet and trying on almost every outfit, while her dressing table was laden with an array of jewelry and hairpins.

After tidying herself up, Lady Wu entered her courtyard and, seeing her daughter dressed flamboyantly and seductively, furrowed her brows in disapproval, "The Marquis's household is still in mourning. We should not dress too ostentatiously when we visit."

Upon hearing this, Wu Jingshu's spirit nearly crumbled, "But all those plain clothes are so unattractive. What if Xiao Shizi doesn't like them?"

Lady Wu dug out a set of light lotus-colored, elegantly styled clothes from her daughter's wardrobe and said, "Whether we'll meet the young master today is uncertain. The key is to make the Marquess fond of you, understand?"

Wu Jingshu nodded, "I understand, Mother."

"Are the gifts for the Marquess ready?" Lady Wu inquired.

"They are ready." Wu Jingshu brought out an exquisite hand warmer cover, "Mother, take a look."

Lady Wu examined it and saw the meticulously stitched hand warmer cover, adorned with well-matched patterns and a circle of pearls at the opening, which added a subtle yet luxurious touch to the whole piece.

"Hmm, very good," Lady Wu said with a smile, taking Wu Jingshu's hand, "Perform well today, rest assured, Mother will ensure you get what you desire."

Hearing her words, Wu Jingshu's mind flashed with the image of Xiao Yuchen's divine-like countenance, her cheeks instantly blushing, and Lady Wu joined in her laughter seeing her daughter's reaction.

Her daughter, naturally, deserved the best.

Wu Jingyun, on the other hand, was rather calm, simply dressed after breakfast and headed to Lady Wu's courtyard with Xing'er.

Seeing her plain attire, Xing'er couldn't help but comment, "Miss, even if the Marquis's household is in mourning, there's no need for you to dress so plainly," noting the simple hairpin in her hair.

Wu Jingyun didn't pause her steps, replying, "It's not because of the Marquis's mourning that I'm not dressed up."

"Even if you want to call off the engagement with Xiao Shizi, you shouldn't neglect your appearance like this!" Xing'er couldn't understand; Xiao Shizi was handsome and of good family background, yet her mistress was adamant about breaking off the engagement.

Wu Jingyun ignored Xing'er's words and headed straight for Lady Wu's courtyard. Women dress for those who please them, and there was no one in the Marquis's household worth dressing up for.

Upon seeing her attire, Lady Wu was relieved. Even as her mother, she had to admit that Wu Jingyun's looks surpassed those of her daughters. She had feared that Wu Jingyun's dressing would overshadow her own daughters today, but instead, she had made herself appear so plain.

Lady Wu sneered inwardly, assuming Wu Jingyun's attire was due to the Marquis's mourning. However, while it was true that the Marquis was in mourning, it wasn't a period of intense mourning, so there was no need to dress as if someone had just died.

But this was just right.

"Everyone's here, let's go."

Mrs. Wu took the lead, followed closely by Wu Jing Shu and Wu Jing Ya, with Wu Jing Yun trailing behind.

Wu Jing Yun was well aware of Mrs. Wu's purpose for visiting the Marquis' residence today: it was simply to make Wu Jing Shu known to the Marchioness, gaining her favor as a prelude to future plans. Yet, she was more than willing to cooperate.

The Wu family's residence was not far from the Marquis', a mere quarter of an hour's carriage ride away. As the carriage halted in front of the Marquis' mansion, Wu Jing Shu was the first to part the curtains and look out, coincidentally catching sight of Xiao Yu Chen stepping out from within.

Like an orchid amidst jade, a clear breeze under a bright moon, his presence was like a ray of light piercing into Wu Jing Shu's heart, leaving her mesmerized and unable to think of anything else.

Sensing her intense gaze, Xiao Yu Chen frowned and glanced back, causing Wu Jing Shu's heart to nearly leap out of her chest. However, after a brief look, he lifted his robe and boarded his carriage. Wu Jing Shu's heart felt a tumultuous blend of disappointment, sweetness, and a tinge of bitterness.

Wu Jing Yun also caught sight of Xiao Yu Chen. Her heart ached slightly, but it seemed more numb than before. She believed it wouldn't be long before she could regard him with the indifference of a stranger.

On their side, Cui Zhu saw the Wu family's carriage arrive and walked up with a smile to the foremost one. As Mrs. Wu lifted the curtain, Cui Zhu greeted her with a smile, "Mrs. Wu, our lady has been eagerly awaiting your arrival."

Knowing her as Tang Shu Yi's head maid, Mrs. Wu replied with a smile, "How is your lady faring?"

Cui Zhu replied, "She's well. She was delighted to receive your invitation yesterday."

With a smile still gracing her face, Mrs. Wu followed Cui Zhu through the grand entrance of the Marquis' mansion and boarded the already prepared sedan chair, with the three Wu sisters following suit.

As a super-first-rank noble, the Marquis' mansion was naturally expansive. From the main entrance to Tang Shu Yi's Shi An Yuan, it was nearly a quarter of an hour's walk. Along the way, pavilions and towers, floral ponds, and waterside pavilions revealed grandeur laced with exquisite details.

Even Mrs. Wu, who considered herself quite worldly, couldn't help but marvel at the beauty of the Marquis' estate. Of course, it also reflected the Marquis' wealth. How else could they maintain such a splendid estate without ample funds?

Wu Jing Shu and Wu Jing Ya were even more envious, especially Wu Jing Shu, who imagined herself as the future lady of the Marquis' residence. Her heart nearly soared with joy.

For Wu Jing Yun, each view of the Marquis' mansion felt like a lifetime away. Once, she was the lady of this house, but back then, she hadn't felt particularly happy; instead, she was often depressed and weary.

In this life, she no longer wanted to live that way. Even now, thinking back to those days made her feel stifled.

Soon, they arrived at Shi An Yuan. The sedan chairs stopped at the entrance, and the Wu family alighted and followed Cui Zhu inside. There, they saw the Marchioness standing gracefully on the veranda, smiling at them.

With flawless white skin, eyebrows arched like distant hills, almond-shaped eyes brimming with laughter, a high and delicate nose, and slightly upturned red lips, she was a vision of elegance and beauty, especially in today's dark purple wide-sleeved robe, adorned with a gold and jade hairpin on her peony double-coil hairstyle.

Mrs. Wu couldn't help but inwardly praise her. It was no coincidence that Xiao Yu Chen grew into such an elegant figure; one glance at the Marchioness's appearance and demeanor revealed the source.

"Marchioness, may you be well," Mrs. Wu greeted, leading her three daughters in a bow to Tang Shu Yi. Holding a fourth-rank imperial title, she was naturally obliged to bow first to Tang Shu Yi, who was of the first rank.

Lady Tang Shuyi would not allow for a grand gesture of respect; as Madame Wu slightly bent her body, Lady Tang smiled, walked over, helped her up, and then proceeded to shower the three Wu daughters with compliments.

After being seated in the room, Lady Tang beckoned Wu Jingyun to her side and inquired about her health. Wu Jingyun replied with a smile, "I appreciate your concern, I've recovered quite well."

However, at this moment, Madame Wu interjected, "Jingyun has always been frail since childhood. Since her recent fall into the water, she frequently suffers from various ailments, which truly pains my heart."

Hearing her words, Lady Tang's eyes slightly dimmed, then taking Wu Jingyun's hand, she advised, "Girls are generally delicate. Regular nourishment should help. But what's more important is to keep a positive spirit.

You see, I used to dwell on the past, and the more I did, the more depressed I became, and it took a toll on my health. Eventually, I realized that whether the past was good or bad, it's behind me. Dwelling on it would only make my present worse. So, I stopped. Now, I only look forward, and my health has improved considerably."

Chapter 34: Why Should She Remain Calm and Collected?

Lady Tang's words came from the heart; although she spoke of herself, her advice was intended for Wu Jingyun.

Deep down, she didn't want to stand against Wu Jingyun. It wasn't out of fear of the protagonist's halo; after all, one carves their own path, and with effort, success is attainable despite others' fortunes. She simply didn't want another enemy.

Truthfully, if Wu Jingyun wanted revenge, even if it meant stabbing Xiao Yuchen a few times, Lady Tang wouldn't intervene. But it seemed Wu Jingyun had no such intentions. She wanted to ruin the entire marquisate, and indeed, in the book, she succeeded, leaving none of the Xiao siblings unscathed.

Thus, for her own sake, as well as for Xiao Yuming and Xiao Yuzhu, she felt compelled to intervene.

Upon hearing her words, Wu Jingyun was momentarily stunned, discerning that Lady Tang was consoling her. She wondered if Lady Tang's references to the past concerned her previous life. If so, was Lady Tang also reborn?

Or perhaps Lady Tang was moved by her own experiences, considering everyone spoke of her profound love for the late Marquis of Yongning.

Madame Wu, on the other hand, believed that Lady Tang had overcome the grief of the Marquis's passing, which explained her radiant appearance today. Smiling, she agreed, "You're right; one must always look forward."

Lady Tang smiled back, although her eyes betrayed her true feelings. She could tell that Madame Wu's earlier remarks about Wu Jingyun's frail health were intentional, aimed at ensuring her stepdaughter's life would not be too comfortable.

After all, which family would willingly welcome a sickly bride?

Lady Tang now felt a tinge of sympathy for Wu Jingyun; with such a stepmother, her life must be difficult. But her sympathy was limited; should Wu Jingyun choose not to back down, they would inevitably remain adversaries.

After some conversation, it was time for lunch. Everyone moved to the dining room for the meal. Following the meal, Lady Tang suggested, "There are several maple trees in the rear garden of the residence. They are particularly beautiful at this time. I'll take you to see them."

Madame Wu, smiling, rose to her feet, "It's said that the scenery behind Chongguang Temple is splendid this season. Perhaps we should find a time for the youngsters to have some fun."

Lady Tang wasn't sure of Madame Wu's intentions but agreed nonetheless; after all, the sooner the engagement was settled, the better.

"Let's also invite the eldest young master," Madame Wu proposed, glancing at Wu Jingyun, her intent for the engaged couple to cultivate their relationship was clear, but her true motives remained known only to her.

In the Great Qian Dynasty, interactions between engaged men and women were not strictly forbidden. Under the supervision of elders, betrothed couples could indeed meet.

"Alright, we'll let him relax a bit too," Tang Shuyi said.

But relaxing is certainly not an option, being extra cautious on that day is the truth of the matter.

As they talked, they reached the back garden of the Marquis's residence, where they could see from afar four or five fiery red maple trees standing along the path, strikingly beautiful against the blue sky of a sunny day.

Mrs. Wu glanced at Wu Jingya, who, taking Wu Jingyun's arm, excitedly suggested they go pick some red leaves, and Wu Jingyun compliantly followed her.

On the other hand, Wu Jingshu, somewhat shyly, brought out a hand warmer cover she had prepared earlier and handed it to Tang Shuyi, "Madam, I made this by hand, thinking that it's getting cold and it would fit perfectly on your hand warmer."

Tang Shuyi carefully admired the hand warmer cover and then looked at Wu Jingshu. The girl was around fourteen or fifteen years old, delicately pretty, a genuinely beautiful young lady. But what did it mean for her to present a gift to her sister's future mother-in-law behind her back? And what was Mrs. Wu's intention?

She sneered inwardly, having heard that stepmothers are often unkind, but today she had witnessed the truth of that saying. To covet the marital arrangement meant for her stepdaughter for her own biological child was not only despicable but also excessively presumptuous.

But did Wu Jingyun know of Mrs. Wu's plans?

She probably did, and it's likely she might turn the tables and call off the engagement. Tang Shuyi felt a surge of anger within her. The various schemes of the Wu family, what did they take their Marquis's residence for?

Although she thought of many things in an instant, her face didn't reveal a thing.

"Such a clever and skillful girl, what do you usually do at home?" Tang Shuyi asked Wu Jingshu with a smile.

Seeing her smile so kindly, Mrs. Wu thought she liked Wu Jingshu and the smile on her face grew even wider. Wu Jingshu answered with a shy face: "I usually do some needlework at home, helping mother with some chores."

"This child is quite astute in household management," Mrs. Wu said with a laugh: "She's learning to manage the household with me now."

"You are someone who knows how to teach a child," Tang Shuyi looked at Mrs. Wu and said.

"It's also because the child is intelligent. She catches on quickly to household management and social etiquette, and is also very filial. Almost all my handkerchiefs, shoes, and socks are made by her."

Mrs. Wu went to great lengths to praise Wu Jingshu, while Tang Shuyi wondered inwardly whether she should also turn the tables. Otherwise, how could this marriage be called off? Of course, it would be best if both families could sit down and amicably discuss calling off the marriage, but was that possible?

It all depended on Wu Jingyun's wishes now.

Thinking this, she said to Mrs. Wu, "Let's go over there and have a look too."

Mrs. Wu naturally agreed, and the three of them walked towards the red maple trees.

Underneath the maple tree, Wu Jingshu and Wu Jingya stood two meters apart without any interaction. Tang Shuyi approached Wu Jingyun and said, "Jingyun, accompany me for a walk by the pond."

"Okay," Wu Jingyun replied, also wanting to confirm if Madame Hou shared her experience of rebirth.

Seeing this, Wu Jingshu's face showed urgency, and she wanted to follow but was gently held back by Madam Wu, stopping her from following them.

As Tang Shuyi walked with Wu Jingyun toward the pond, she mentioned, "The old Madame Hou often spoke fondly of her youth with your maternal grandmother."

The marriage between Wu Jingyun and Xiao Yuchen was arranged by the old Madame Hou, who was quite satisfied with Wu Jingyun back then. Tang Shuyi's mention of Wu Jingyun's grandmother was an attempt to appeal to their emotional bond.

It would be best if the marriage could be annulled harmoniously.

"My grandmother often mentioned the old Madame Hou as well," Wu Jingyun said.

As they reached the pond, they stopped walking. Tang Shuyi, looking at the lotus flowers in the pond, remarked, "The Hou household has undergone many changes these past years, but I've come to terms with many things now."

After saying this, she turned around, looked earnestly at Wu Jingyun, and said, "Some matters may seem difficult, but in practice, they may not be so hard to resolve. If both parties could sit down, talk calmly and rationally, perhaps a mutually satisfactory solution could be found, don't you think?"

Tang Shuyi's words were cryptic, but Wu Jingyun had a sense of what she meant. Her heart was somewhat flustered; she couldn't be sure whether Madame Hou, like her, had been reborn.

Regardless of whether Madame Hou was reborn or not, these words left Wu Jingyun feeling wronged and angry. How could Madame Hou, who never experienced the struggles of her darkest days, expect her to remain calm and composed?

A win-win situation?

If a win-win solution was possible, why couldn't Xiao Yuchen have given her some love in her previous life? Why did she have to live in such distress?

Chapter 35: It's Merely a Matter of Perspective

It had been some time since Wu Jingyun was reborn, but the memories of her past life still suffocated her, making it impossible for her to let go and stop caring.

Looking at Tang Shuyi, she said, "Madame, do you remember that Mid-Autumn Festival when you told me you wouldn't let me be wronged, that you would stand up for me?"

Wu Jingyun's question was a test, probing whether Tang Shuyi had also been reborn.

Not long after her marriage to Xiao Yuchen in her previous life, she had brought Liu Biqin into the Hou household. That Mid-Autumn Festival, Madame Hou had told her that Liu Biqin was just a concubine, and as long as she was there, she wouldn't let Wu Jingyun be wronged and would stand up for her.

Tang Shuyi obviously sensed the probing, but she still appeared surprised and then asked, "Which Mid-Autumn Festival? What wrongs have you suffered, Jingyun?"

Wu Jingyun stared intently at her, trying to spot any flaws in her expression, but Tang Shuyi's surprise seemed genuine, along with confusion about her recent statement.

It seemed Wu Jingyun was overthinking; Madame Hou hadn't been reborn. But what did Madame Hou's words earlier mean? Were they spontaneous, or did she know something?

For a moment, Wu Jingyun's heart was even more flustered, but her face remained composed. She said, "It's nothing. What was the matter Lady Tang mentioned that we could sit down and discuss?"

Wu Jingyun tried to divert the topic and shift Lady Tang's attention. Lady Tang didn't dwell on her previous words and said, "It's about the Liang family's unauthorized intrusion into Mei Hua Lane residence. The matter could have been discussed calmly and amicably."

With these words, there was no need for Lady Tang to say anything more.

She turned to look at the girl in front of her. Tall and stately in stature, dignified in appearance, but her heart was not as broad as her outward appearance. Indeed, in her previous life, Xiao Yuchen was a scoundrel to her, an inhuman marriage.

But if one had a broad heart, one could still live a carefree life.

In her previous life, she was the Lady of Yongning Marquis, and her family was not of humble origin. They were wealthy and had status. What if the man didn't love her? If you have love for me, I will cherish it twofold. If you're heartless, then let's both find our own happiness.

One can live freely without a man.

As for that annoying concubine, huh, as long as I'm alive, you'll forever be just a concubine.

So, living well doesn't depend on whether the cards in your hand are good or bad, but on how you play them.

What had to be said has been said. But now it seems that this engagement can't be peacefully annulled. We'll have to take it one step at a time and inevitably stand on opposite sides when the time comes.

Often, it's just like that. It's not about who's good or bad; it's simply a matter of standing on different sides.

"Lotus seeds are very beneficial to one's health. I'll have some picked and sent to you later," Lady Tang said with a smile.

Wu Jingyun replied, "Thank you, my lady."

With that, their conversation came to an end.

Lady Tang walked towards Madam Wu and the others. Wu Jingyun, with a troubled heart but a calm face, followed behind. When they reached the red maple tree, Lady Tang chatted with Madam Wu for a while. Madam Wu then proposed to leave, arranging to visit Chongguang Temple together in two days.

Wu Jingyun absentmindedly followed Madam Wu out of the Marquis's residence and got onto the carriage with a troubled mind. Upon arriving at the Wu residence, Madam Wu, also preoccupied with her thoughts, didn't say much and let her return to her own courtyard.

After entering her bedroom, she asked her maids to leave and sat on the small couch by the window in a daze, pondering over Lady Tang's words.

Lady Tang must have been hinting that the matter of annulment with Xiao Yuchen could be discussed amicably. So, Lady Tang must know something. How much did she know?

Wu Jingyun sat there for a long time, thinking about many things from her past and present life. If Lady Tang knew something, then her words today were a hint to forget the past and that the annulment could be amicably discussed.

She knew all too well that being granted a second chance at life by the heavens meant she should cherish it and live well in the present. However, the suffering she endured in her past life was too profound, and those who had hurt her were still living well. How could she not think about the past and let go of the entanglements of her previous life?

A peaceful dissolution of the engagement?

Why should she?

In her past life, Xiao Yuchen had inflicted so much harm upon her. Why should she easily brush aside the past?

The engagement must be annulled, but as for Xiao Yuchen's aspirations to marry a desirable wife and lead a blissful life in this life? Impossible!

The more Wu Jingyun thought about it, the angrier she became, her face flushing with ire. Taking a deep breath to steady her emotions, she turned to look at her reflection in the mirror and said, "One last time. If I can tie Wu Jingshu and Xiao Yuchen together this time, I won't meddle with them anymore."

She had it all planned out. If Xiao Yuchen married Wu Jingshu, with Wu Jingshu's temperament, Liu Biqin would certainly not enter the Marquis's residence. Wu Jingyun was well aware of how much Xiao Yuchen adored Liu Biqin. If Liu Biqin couldn't enter the Marquis's residence in this life, Xiao Yuchen's obsession with her would only grow.

With a husband whose heart was filled with another woman, Wu Jingshu wouldn't have an easy life.

And Wu Jingshu, unlike her past self, wouldn't suffer in silence. If she was miserable, she wouldn't let others live in peace and would surely cause constant turmoil in the Marquis's residence.

Thinking of those who had hurt her in the past not having a good life in this life brought Wu Jingyun considerable satisfaction.

People are selfish. The Marquis's wife shouldn't blame her for not letting go of Xiao Yuchen. After all, Xiao Yuchen didn't let her off in her past life, did he?

In Lady Wu's courtyard, Wu Jingshu was anxiously asking, "Mother, what did the Marquis's wife and Wu Jingyun talk about by the pond?"

Lady Wu gently patted her hand, "No matter what was said, just do as I instructed you in two days at Chongguang Temple. Once the rice is cooked into porridge, can the Marquis's residence deny it?"

Wu Jingshu blushed with embarrassment, but she was still worried, "Mother, what if… after the deed is done, the heir and the Marquis's wife look down on me?"

Lady Wu sighed, "Given the… suddenness of the event, the Marquis's wife and Xiao Yuchen will probably have some complaints. But hearts are made of flesh. Be obedient in their presence, and when you marry, I'll prepare a generous dowry for you. Gradually, they will come to accept you."

Wu Jingshu felt somewhat reassured and then asked, "I heard that the heir has hidden Liu Biqin. Is it true?"

Although the Liang family had no evidence of Xiao Yuchen harboring the daughter of a criminal, Liu Biqin, rumors had still spread.

Lady Wu was not worried about Liu Biqin, "She's just the daughter of a criminal. Even if the heir has hidden her, what can it do? Once you marry into the Marquis's residence, it'll be easy to deal with her. There are plenty of ways to kill a person."

Wu Jingshu was relieved and clung to Lady Wu's arm, acting coquettishly, "Mother, you are so good to me."

Lady Wu patted her back and laughed, "Of course, I'll always give the best to you sisters."

Chapter 36: This Profligate Life Cannot Go On

Tang Shuyi subtly hinted to Wu Jingyun about calling off the engagement. Although her suggestion wasn't taken, she didn't dwell on it. The world doesn't revolve around her; she can't expect others to always acquiesce to her wishes.

After the Wu family left, she instructed Butler Zhao to keep a close eye on the Wu residence. She speculated that something might happen during the visit to Chongguang Temple in two days. By monitoring the Wu family now, she could be informed about the enemy as well as herself.

Of course, this might just be her conjecture; perhaps the Wu matriarch and Wu Jingyun wouldn't do anything that day. However, it's always wise to take precautions.

If nothing happens that day, she'll have to figure out a way to annul the engagement between Xiao Yuchen and Wu Jingyun. However, it probably won't be easy, as officially, neither Xiao Yuchen nor Wu Jingyun has done anything wrong.

Of course, if she resorted to underhanded methods, calling off the engagement would be easy, but she disdains such actions.

After arranging these matters, Tang Shuyi started considering taking some time to explore the capital, to survey the market and see if it's suitable for opening a clubhouse. If it's feasible, she'll have to decide on the best location.

When Xiao Yuchen returned, Tang Shuyi was discussing with Cui Zhu and Cui Yun about which restaurant in the capital had the best reputation, even asking him for suggestions. Upon hearing this, Xiao Yuchen asked, "Mother, are you thinking of opening a restaurant in the capital?"

Considering that the customer base she had in mind for the clubhouse included people like Xiao Yuchen, young masters from the capital's prominent families, she thought it wise to heed his opinion and said:

"I'm thinking of finding a residence with three or four courtyards, sprucing it up to create a refined club where we can provide food, lodging, music, dance, and even venues for your literary gatherings. What do you think?"

Xiao Yuchen's eyes lit up at this, then he said, "If the environment is sufficiently exquisite, it will definitely be feasible."

"The environment within the residence will naturally require meticulous refurbishment," said Tang Shuyi, "at the very least, it shouldn't be inferior to the gardens of our marquis estate."

"Then it's certainly feasible," Xiao Yuchen said and then complained about the restaurant where they held their literary gathering today, "Although the room's decor was passable, the space was too cramped; it felt crowded with just seven or eight people."

Hearing this, Tang Shuyi grew more confident and said, "When you have time, accompany me to scout around and understand the situation. If it's feasible, I'll get started on this venture."

Xiao Yuchen nodded in agreement, simultaneously admiring her decisive manner in handling affairs – once she sees something promising, she acts on it immediately.

"Today, Mrs. Wu invited us to Chongguang Temple for an outing in two days," Tang Shuyi brought up the matter scheduled for two days later.

"Us? Am I also supposed to go?" Xiao Yuchen was reluctant to interact with the Wu family, but then he thought this was his own affair; he couldn't always burden his mother with resolving it, and a look of guilt crossed his face.

"I suspect that Mrs. Wu or Miss Wu might make some move during that time." Tang Shuyi recounted the incident of Wu Jingyun bringing her gifts today and her hints to Wu Jingyun, then added:

"Of course, this might just be my speculation. But it's better for us to be cautious. Be careful with what you eat there, and avoid being alone with any of the young ladies from the Wu family. As for the rest, you'll have to adapt accordingly."

Xiao Yuchen nodded earnestly and agreed, then inquired, "How much longer will Yuming have to stay in the study?"

"That's up to him," Tang Shuyi responded. "When he figures things out, he can come out. I don't expect him to achieve greatness, but he cannot continue this profligate lifestyle."

Xiao Yuchen sighed inwardly; in fact, before this, the three siblings had rarely been taught in such a manner. When their father was alive, he spent many years at the frontier, and their mother at that time indulged them, giving them whatever they desired without ever teaching them how to behave or handle affairs as they were now being taught.

But now, things were better. In recent days, their mother had changed a lot, beginning to instruct them earnestly. He believed that their Marquis's estate would only get better from here.

After the mother and son had talked for a while, Xiao Yuzhu returned from school. Tang Shuyi ordered the meal to be served and also instructed someone to send Xiao Yuming his meal.

"Mother, when will you let Second Brother come out?" Xiao Yuzhu cooed while tugging at Tang Shuyi's arm, "I reasoned with Second Brother, and he knows he was wrong."

Tang Shuyi couldn't help but laugh, "You reasoned with your Second Brother? How did you manage that?"

Xiao Yuzhu recounted the conversation she had through the crack in the door with Xiao Yuming that morning, and upon hearing it, Tang Shuyi burst into laughter, "See, even our Yuzhu understands the principles he ignores. Let him think on it some more."

Xiao Yuzhu hadn't expected to inadvertently cause trouble and wanted to say more, but Tang Shuyi, holding her hand, led her to the dining room, saying as they walked: "My intention isn't to punish your Second Brother, but to make him understand his lesson. If he doesn't and comes out the same as before, this punishment would have been for nothing."

Xiao Yuzhu nodded, "Then let's continue his confinement."

Tang Shuyi smiled and stroked her head, noting how much more considerate this little girl was compared to those two boys.

Behind them, Xiao Yuchen listened to their conversation and pondered how he might persuade Xiao Yuming later. After dinner, he went to the study in the front courtyard.

The sky was turning dark, the autumn breeze rustled the leaves, casting a lonely and chilly atmosphere over the courtyard. Xiao Yuchen suddenly remembered a day just like this one in deep autumn, when he, as a child longing to play, had come to this yard and seen his father Xiao Huai practicing martial arts with his crescent blade.

The tall and upright figure of his father swung the blade taller than himself, creating a fierce gust with each movement. At that time, he thought his father was the most formidable person in the world.

Yet such a formidable father had not been there to see them grow up.

A sudden tightness gripped his heart.

Yan Tai and Shi Mo huddled at the entrance of the study. Upon seeing him, they were about to bow in respect, but Xiao Yuchen gestured for them to leave. He then stood by the door.

After Shi Mo and Yan Tai left the courtyard, he bent over and peered through the crack in the door, only to see Xiao Yuming feasting at the desk, looking nothing like a punished child.

A small laugh escaped him, and then he quietly stood by the door, waiting for Xiao Yuming to finish his meal.

After a short while, there came a series of banging knocks from inside, followed by Xiao Yuming's voice, "Clean up now."

No sooner had his voice fallen than a servant approached from outside, paid his respects to Xiao Yuchen, and then took out the keys to unlock the door and begin clearing away the dishes, while Xiao Yuchen stepped inside.

Xiao Yuming didn't say anything when he saw him, poured himself a glass of water, and drank deeply while Xiao Yuchen found a chair to sit down.

After tidying up the dishes, the young servant approached Xiao Yuchen with a bow and a smile, saying, "Young Master, the mistress has instructed..."

"I'll leave in a moment, and I'll speak to mother about this later," Xiao Yuchen interjected, cutting off the servant's words.

The servant, of course, wouldn't say anything more. He carried the dishes out and even thoughtfully closed the door behind him.

Xiao Yuchen sat in silence for a while before saying, "Just now, I was suddenly reminded of father practicing martial arts when we were children."

Chapter 37: I Want to Learn Martial Arts

Xiao Yuchen sat on the chair by the window, turning his head to gaze into the night outside, dark and serene.

He said, "Just now, I was suddenly reminded of father practicing martial arts when we were children."

Hearing his words, Xiao Yuming placed his glass on the table and slumped in his chair as if boneless. "I thought your mind was only occupied with Liu Biqin," he said.

Caught off guard by his abrupt statement, Xiao Yuchen turned sharply, his expression flustered and somewhat awkward as he looked at Xiao Yuming, "I... you..."

Under the cynical gaze of Xiao Yuming, Xiao Yuchen found himself at a loss for words, eventually resorting to silently staring out into the night.

The room was steeped in silence, the dim light elongating the shadows of the two brothers...

Time passed indiscernibly before Xiao Yuchen murmured almost to himself, "You don't understand the feelings between her and me."

Xiao Yuming let out a scoff, "You don't understand my matters either."

Turning to look at Xiao Yuming, who was sprawled carelessly in his chair, Xiao Yuchen suddenly realized he didn't truly understand his younger brother. In fact, upon reflection, he indeed did not. His attention had always been on his studies and Liu Biqin; how could he have spared any for his siblings?

He was indeed an inadequate elder brother.

"I... I truly have no right to admonish you. What I wanted to say today is..."

Xiao Yuchen wanted to tell him that their mother was working hard to support the entire household and that they shouldn't add to her burdens. But this sounded too preachy, and remembering Xiao Yuming's earlier words, he found himself unable to voice it.

In the end, all he could manage was, "Nevermind, mother said she'd let you out once you've thought it over. Rest well, I'll take my leave now."

With those words, he rose and hurried toward the door. His steps were a bit flustered. Xiao Yuming, still sprawled indolently in his chair, remained silent and motionless.

Soon, the doorkeeping servant arrived. Standing at the entrance, he bowed cautiously and said to the still and silent Xiao Yuming, "Second Young Master, the door will be locked now."

Xiao Yuming sat as still as a statue, making no sound or movement. The servant nodded at him again before locking the door.

Leaving the study, Xiao Yuchen made his way to his Qingfeng Courtyard, stepping through the cold moonlight. A chill wind blew, sweeping through his collar and engulfing his body, yet he was utterly oblivious.

As he neared Qingfeng Courtyard, he suddenly halted, gazing into the distant night and mused, "Did I truly err?"

Changming, who had been quietly following behind, didn't know to what he was referring, nor how to respond. Xiao Yuchen didn't seem to expect a reply, and after a moment, he added, "What is wrong, and what is right? Is turning a blind eye to her being trampled upon the correct thing to do?"

Changming, unsure how to respond, remained silent. Seeing Xiao Yuchen resume his walk, he quickly followed.

Upon entering Qingfeng Courtyard, Ziling immediately greeted him, "Young Master, it's quite chilly. Why didn't you wear a cloak?"

Xiao Yuchen didn't respond, continuing on his way as Ziling hurried to attend to him, assisting with his bath and rest...

The next day, nearing noon, Tang Shuyi was inspecting her dowry, which now belonged to her. She planned to invest her private funds in a clubhouse, avoiding the use of the estate's public money.

The accounts of the Marquis's estate were meticulously detailed. The public funds of the estate came from the businesses of the old Marquis and Xiao Huai, while the dowries of the old Marchioness and her former self were her own. Although she and the three children were now the masters of the estate, Tang Shuyi still managed the assets of the old Marquis, the old Marchioness, Xiao Huai, and herself separately.

Considering the potential future troubles of the estate, which might even lead to a division, it was best to keep the accounts clear.

Reviewing her private accounts and the available funds, Tang Shuyi calculated how much would be needed for a clubhouse with three courtyards. Just then, Cuicui came in and reported, "Madam, Shimo from Second Young Master's side is here."

Tang Shuyi shifted her gaze from the ledger and said, "Let him in."

Shimo entered the room and quickly knelt down, "This servant pays respects to Madam."

Tang Shuyi glanced at him, having learned a bit about Xiao Yuming's two attendants. Yantai was honest, while this Shimo was quite clever.

"Rise," she instructed.

Standing up with a slight bow, Shimo relayed, "Madam, the Second Young Master sent this servant to inform you that he has come to a realization."

Tang Shuyi paused for a moment, then said, "Alright, I'll go see him."

She rose and headed out, with Cuizhu and Cuicui following. Shimo quickly caught up, whispering to Cuicui, "Sister Cuicui, the Second Young Master has been sitting there silently for days, deep in thought. This time, he must have come to a conclusion."

Cuiyun glanced at him and snorted, "You always overthink things." His earlier remark was clearly intended for the lady's ears, implying that the Second Young Master was seriously contemplating matters, heeding the lady's advice.

Shimo chuckled quietly.

Up ahead, Tang Shuyi caught bits of their conversation, her lips curving slightly. Whether subdued or lively, the attendants of Xiao Yuxuan and Xiao Yuming were undoubtedly loyal.

Soon they reached the study. Tang Shuyi instructed someone to open the door, and there stood Xiao Yuming by the desk, eyes bright and lively, not at all like someone who had been confined. Upon seeing her, he flashed a grin, revealing shiny white teeth, "Mother, please have a seat."

Tang Shuyi walked behind the desk and sat down, while Xiao Yuming stood properly in front of her and said, "Mother, I've made up my mind. I want to learn martial arts."

Tang Shuyi studied him intently, trying to discern whether he was sincere or just placating her. But Xiao Yuming, grinning with his teeth bared, was inscrutable.

Suddenly, she realized that this second son was not just rebellious; he was also shrewd. However, these traits weren't necessarily bad; it's always better to be astute than easily fooled.

"Learning martial arts is good," she said. "I'll find you a master."

"No need, Niu Hongliang will do," said Xiao Yuming.

Tang Shuyi recalled Niu Hongliang, the head guard of the Marquis' residence, formerly a captain under Xiao Huai and now unable to rise in the ranks due to an arm injury. Xiao Huai had appointed him as the head guard.

A person arranged by Xiao Huai was undoubtedly loyal, but was there any hidden agenda in Xiao Yuming's proactive request to train with him?

After a moment's hesitation, she replied, "Alright, I'll speak to him. You start learning from him diligently, and later I'll find you an even better master."

In fact, when Tang Shuyi had first proposed that Xiao Yuming learn martial arts, she had already considered asking the great general Xiang Gaochi to be his master. Although it wasn't easy to secure Xiang as a master, Xiao Huai had once done him a favor, and Tang Shuyi planned to use that as leverage.

Now that Xiao Yuming himself had suggested Niu Hongliang, she didn't want to press him too hard, lest he end up running away from home like Yan Wu.

Chapter 38: More Spirited and Handsome Than Men

Having settled the matter, Xiao Yuming grinned at Tang Shuyi again, "Mother, I'm hungry."

Tang Shuyi was at a loss for words; the most frequent phrase from this second son of hers was, "Mother, I'm hungry."

"Alright, it's almost noon. Time for lunch," she said.

As she spoke, she rose and walked out, with Xiao Yuming quickly following behind. On the way, they encountered Xiao Yuzhu, who had just returned from school.

"Second Brother, you're out of jail?" Xiao Yuzhu exclaimed in surprise upon seeing Xiao Yuming. She had thought he would be confined for several more days.

"What do you mean 'released from prison'? I haven't been incarcerated," Xiao Yuming said, as he went to flick Xiao Yuzhu's forehead. Xiao Yuzhu quickly covered her head and ducked behind Tang Shuyi for shelter.

Tang Shuyi couldn't help but laugh at the siblings' playful antics. She lowered her head to Xiao Yuzhu and said, "Your second brother is right. He wasn't in prison, just confined to his room for a few days of reflection."

The image of Xiao Yuming locked in his study popped into Xiao Yuzhu's mind, prompting a giggle, which Tang Shuyi joined in. Xiao Yuming cast a sidelong glance at Xiao Yuzhu, pretending not to know she was laughing at him, and strode towards Tang Shuyi's Shi'an Garden.

Upon arrival, they saw Xiao Yuchen sitting in the hall drinking tea. Xiao Yuming walked over, grabbed a piece of pastry, stuffed it into his mouth, and mumbled, "Big brother, you're even more punctual than meal times."

Xiao Yuchen pretended not to hear his jest, took a sip of tea, and asked, "Have you made up your mind?"

"Hmm, I plan to practice martial arts," Xiao Yuming said casually. "Under Steward Niu's tutelage?"

Xiao Yuchen was momentarily confused about who Steward Niu was, and asked, "Which Steward Niu?"

Xiao Yuming: "The Captain of the Guards."

Xiao Yuchen understood then, "He's quite skilled."

At that moment, Tang Shuyi and Xiao Yuzhu returned, and the family gathered for lunch. Over the meal, Tang Shuyi shared her idea of starting a guild and added, "I plan to explore the estate this afternoon, would any of you care to join me?"

All three siblings were intrigued by the concept of the guild and naturally wished to accompany her. Xiao Yuchen usually stayed home to read, and Xiao Yuming had been previously punished, but Tang Shuyi had already arranged for his leave from the academy. Both had time to spare, whereas Xiao Yuzhu had to attend school that afternoon.

At that moment, she gazed up at Tang Shuyi with big, pitiful eyes, looking as woeful as can be. Tang Shuyi couldn't help but laugh, "I'll have someone request leave for you shortly."

Overjoyed, Xiao Yuzhu started serving dishes to Tang Shuyi, saying, "Mother is the best."

Xiao Yuming glanced at her and remarked, "Flatterer."

Xiao Yuzhu glared at him, "Mind your own business."

Tang Shuyi didn't intervene in their squabble and continued eating. After the meal, she took the three mischievous children out for a stroll.

As the capital city of two dynasties, Shangjing was naturally bustling. Today, Tang Shuyi's primary objective was to survey the market, so they headed towards the streets where prominent restaurants and teahouses were located.

"Tianxiang Lou serves the best fish, and the pastries from Yunxi Lou are quite delightful..." Inside the carriage, Xiao Yuming listed the famous restaurants of Shangjing like a connoisseur, something he was naturally very familiar with as a well-known dandy of the capital.

Tang Shuyi listened intently, interjecting with questions now and then. Once Xiao Yuming had shared quite a bit, she asked, "Which place has the best ambiance?"

"In terms of ambiance, restaurants can't compare to teahouses," Xiao Yuming listed several teahouses known for their serene environments, and Tang Shuyi took note of each one.

Once they had left the confines of the carriage, it was unthinkable to spend the whole journey within its narrow confines. Upon reaching the bustling De'an Street in the capital, Tang Shuyi instructed the coachman to halt in front of Yu Lan Xuan, the teahouse reputed by Xiao Yuming to have the finest ambiance, and the family proceeded to enter.

The teahouse's attendant hurried over to greet them as soon as he spotted them, exclaiming, "Ah, young master Xiao and second master Xiao, what a pleasure to have both of you today. Please, come inside."

As the attendant bowed respectfully to Tang Shuyi, though unaware of her identity, the reverence with which the two scions of the Yongning Marquis's house protected her, and her resemblance to the young master, it took him only a moment to guess who she must be.

They followed the attendant upstairs into a refined private room of about twenty square meters, adorned with rosewood furniture, landscape paintings, and floral arrangements that filled the room with a scholarly air, especially the large curved tea table in the center, which added a touch of elegance.

After they were seated, the attendant gestured and several comely maids came in gracefully with the tea set, expertly served the tea, and then stood by.

Tang Shuyi picked up the celadon tea cup with bamboo patterns near her and gently sniffed it, the subtle scent of bamboo clearing the mind and brightening the spirit. Sipping lightly, she enjoyed the mild bitterness infused with a hint of bamboo, and couldn't resist downing the rest of the tea in one go.

Seeing this, one of the maids by her side quietly refilled her cup, explaining, "Madam, this tea is called Misty Bamboo, made from the most tender bamboo shoots harvested in March from the top of Shaking Light Mountain. It's known for its mind-clearing and spleen-nourishing properties."

The maid's voice was soft and melodious, and as Tang Shuyi drained another cup, her bold and carefree manner left the maid blushing, thinking how this lady's demeanor was even more forthright and dashing than that of men.

At that moment, Tang Shuyi turned to look at her and said, "Well spoken, here's a reward!"

Cuiyun pulled out a piece of silver from her purse and placed it in the maid's hand, whose face grew even redder as she thanked Tang Shuyi and bowed.

Tang Shuyi then inquired what Xiao Yuchen and Xiao Yuming usually did when they came to teahouses. Without any reason to hide anything, the brothers shared truthfully; Xiao Yuchen frequented gatherings of scholars and poets, while Xiao Yuming simply sought enjoyment.

Tang Shuyi listened without comment, her attention turning to the room's detailed decor. Suddenly, the door was pushed open, and a young girl of about fifteen or sixteen with a lovely appearance stepped in.

The girl was surprised upon seeing the occupants, then stepped forward gracefully to greet Tang Shuyi, "Madam, please forgive my intrusion. I've accidentally entered the wrong room and disturbed you."

Tang Shuyi gave her a glance, not recognizing her and assuming she had simply wandered into the wrong room by mistake, and dismissed it with, "It's alright, whose family do you belong to?"

"My father is Zhao Yuanzheng, a middle-ranking official in the Ministry of Revenue," replied the girl.

"Hmm," Tang Shuyi acknowledged, "You may go attend to your matters."

After the girl bowed again and left the room, Xiao Yuming remarked, "Is she the daughter of Zhao Langzhong who has come to the capital to report on his duties?"

Sensing a note of gossip in his words, Tang Shuyi gestured for the maids in the room to leave before asking, "Is this Zhao Langzhong well-known?"

"He's been quite notable recently," replied Xiao Yuming, whose friends, mostly idle young nobles, were well-versed in the capital's gossip. He continued:

"It is said that this Zhao Langzhong is particularly adept at currying favor; now, with the rumor that Minister Qi of the Ministry of Revenue is seeking a new wife, Zhao seems to be eagerly plotting to offer his own daughter as the minister's stepwife."

Tang Shuyi pondered for a moment. It had been about three years since the death of Qi Liang's previous wife, the Minister of Revenue. It was quite normal for him to remarry. However, if the girl he had just seen was the object of his remarriage, she might be too young. That girl could very well be Qi Liang's daughter in terms of age.

But then again, such phenomena were nothing out of the ordinary in ancient times, after all, women in ancient times married as teenagers. As a high official of the second rank in the imperial court, Qi Liang's choice for remarriage would naturally not be a woman who had been married before.

While she was mulling over this, she heard Xiao Yuming add, "It is said that Princess Changping has also taken a fancy to Minister Qi and wants him to be her consort."

This time, Tang Shuyi was somewhat astonished. To her knowledge, Princess Changping was over thirty this year, and since the death of her previous consort, her mansion had been filled with all sorts of young men. Why would she suddenly want Qi Liang to be her consort?

Moreover, would Qi Liang agree? He was a high-ranking official in charge of the state's finances; would he consent to be the consort of a princess who had an unknown number of male attendants?

However, it was someone else's business, and Tang Shuyi was content to just be an observer. After sitting in the teahouse for a while longer, she took her three children and went home.

Chapter 39: One Should Not Be Too Capricious in Actions

The next day, after breakfast, Tang Shuyi summoned Niu Hongliang, the chief of the guards, to the Shi'an Garden to arrange for Xiao Yuming's martial arts training.

Niu Hongliang was of average height with a round face and dark skin, and his large eyes gave him the kind of look that would not stand out in a crowd. But upon closer inspection, one could see a particular brightness in his eyes, and his every move exuded an invisible strength.

Although Tang Shuyi was not versed in martial arts, she could sense that Niu Hongliang's skills were far from shallow.

After arranging a seat for him and serving tea, Tang Shuyi spoke to him about Xiao Yuming's desire to learn martial arts. Niu Hongliang was a straightforward person and agreed without hesitation. Teaching the young master a few moves was no difficult task.

"He is at the age where he is fond of play. I hope you can be strict with him," Tang Shuyi said.

This time, Niu Hongliang hesitated for a moment before agreeing. Teaching martial arts was one thing; having Xiao Yuming practice with him was another, but discipline was more challenging. Even when he served in the army with a rank of colonel, he dared not discipline the sons of the marquis's household.

But now that the lady of the house had given her orders, he could only agree. However, deep down, he didn't think that the second young master would submit to his discipline.

Seeing his hesitation, Tang Shuyi guessed what he was thinking. But since she had already agreed with Xiao Yuming, she couldn't change her mind now. She decided to let things take their course for the time being.

Besides, with Xiao Yuming's current rudimentary skills, even General Xiang wouldn't give him a second glance.

Of course, with Niu Hongliang taking on the additional role of Xiao Yuming's martial arts instructor, his treatment in all aspects would be improved. After he left, Tang Shuyi instructed someone to make the necessary arrangements.

Tomorrow was the day she had agreed to visit Chongguang Temple with Lady Wu. She called over someone to keep an eye on the Wu residence and inquired if there had been any discoveries. It turned out that in the past two days, Lady Wu and Wu Jingyun had not left their residence, and neither had the people around them.

Nevertheless, Tang Shuyi did not let down her guard. After dinner, she reiterated her cautionary advice to Xiao Yuxin for the trip to Chongguang Temple the next day, and Xiao Yuxin earnestly agreed.

The journey from the marquis's residence to Chongguang Temple took more than an hour. The next day, Tang Shuyi got up early and took the spacious carriage prepared for long journeys to Chongguang Temple. The carriage was spacious enough that one could lie down and sleep inside without any issue.

Xiao Yuchen and Tang Shuyi rode together, conversing briefly before Xiao Yuchen pulled out a book to read. Tang Shuyi glanced at the cover, recognizing "The Great Learning," one of the Four Books among the classic Confucian texts.

It seemed he was indeed diligent in his studies.

Tang Shuyi did not disturb him and took out a book of her own to read, choosing "Records of the Grand Historian." In her previous life, she would never have chosen such a book, but in the ancient aristocratic families, it was considered essential reading for elite education, surely for good reason.

If she wanted to thrive in this ancient era, she didn't need to master these texts, but she had to at least be familiar with them. She always believed knowledge was the foundation for all success.

The journey to Chongguang Temple was spent immersed in their readings, and they arrived swiftly. Disembarking from the carriage at the foot of the mountain, they lifted their eyes to see a temple standing amidst a blend of red and green hues, a touch of elegance amidst the bold colors, full of charm.

"The scenery here is indeed pleasant," Tang Shuyi said deeply, inhaling the fresh mountain air.

Xiao Yuchen, too, was affected by the vivid landscape, his mood becoming bright and expansive. He said, "Mother, if you like, we can come here more often."

Gazing at the blue sky, white clouds, and majestic mountains, Tang Shuyi declared, "Indeed, we should come out more often."

Xiao Yuchen, watching her spirited demeanor, felt as if he was also filled with energy. Lately, he felt his mother's actions carried an indescribable boldness.

"Let's climb the mountain," Tang Shuyi said, stepping forward. Just then, Mrs. Wu's voice came from behind. Turning around, they saw her and her three daughters standing not far away.

"I thought you would arrive a bit later; I didn't expect you to be so early," Mrs. Wu said with a smile as she approached, followed by Wu Jingyun, Wu Jingshu, and Wu Jingya.

Wu Jingyun's gaze briefly touched the handsome Xiao Yuchen but quickly moved away. Time was the best healer; she no longer felt heartache upon seeing him.

Xiao Yuchen, however, took a second glance at her. It was merely curiosity; he was intrigued by the girl who went to such lengths to break off their engagement.

Wu Jingshu also glanced at Xiao Yuchen, even giving him a flirtatious smile when their eyes met. Xiao Yuchen frowned slightly before turning to listen to Tang Shuyi and Mrs. Wu's pleasantries.

After the greetings were exchanged, he followed Tang Shuyi up the mountain. Mrs. Wu chuckled and said, "You young people have no patience for us elders. Young Master, I'll trouble you to look after my three daughters today."

Xiao Yuchen politely smiled at her, tacitly agreeing. Ordinarily, he would have refused Mrs. Wu's request, citing the impropriety of mingling with the opposite sex. However, Tang Shuyi had mentioned that the Wu family might make a move today, and his observations confirmed that the third Miss Wu was indeed not "honest." Wanting to break off the engagement sooner, he was willing to play along.

He realized he had changed a lot recently. In the past, he would have straightforwardly asked his family to propose breaking off the engagement with Wu Jingyun, avoiding such ungentlemanly tactics.

Indeed, he used to think this approach ungentlemanly, but not anymore. Breaking off an engagement was not simple; it required sufficient grounds. Wu Jingyun seemed faultless on the surface, leaving him without a reason for the breakup.

Forcing a breakup without a valid reason would certainly lead to rumors that the Yongning Marquisate was unreasonable. It would reflect poorly on his family and on him and his mother. His desire to break off the engagement stemmed from Wu Jingyun's extreme actions. Moreover, given the current situation, she seemed willing to go to any lengths to end their engagement.

Wu Jingyun had resorted to unscrupulous methods first; why then must he stubbornly insist on acting the "gentleman"? Besides, he had not actively harmed anyone; he was merely going with the flow.

A whiff of a refreshing scent filled his nostrils amidst his thoughts, and Xiao Yuchen turned his head to find Wu Jingyun beside him, only an arm's length away. He had never been so close to another woman, his cheeks reddening slightly. He wanted to create some distance between them, but eventually restrained himself.

He had come to realize that one mustn't be too impulsive in their actions.

Wu Jingshu's heart was fluttering like a frightened deer at this moment, her eyes involuntarily glancing towards the jade-like figure beside her. She wanted to speak to him, but shyness held her tongue. After mustering her courage several times, she finally whispered, "Has the Young Master visited this place before?"

Xiao Yuchen didn't offer her a glance, merely responding with a noncommittal hum. Although he planned to go with the flow and knew that he shouldn't be too impulsive, he still couldn't manage to engage in lively banter with a stranger; it was against his principles.

Yet, even his simple "hum" made Wu Jingshu's heart leap with joy. She boldly continued the conversation, mostly talking by herself while Xiao Yuchen occasionally responded with a "hum."

PS: Xiao Yuchen is actually quite contradictory.

Chapter 40: Lighting an Everlasting Lamp

From a distance, Wu Jingyun watched Wu Jingshu converse with Xiao Yuchen, her little face flushed, and sneered inwardly. So this was the virtuous daughter raised by the Feng family, brazenly flirting with her future brother-in-law in public.

What puzzled her, however, was that based on her understanding of Xiao Yuchen, his current demeanor clearly showed impatience. Why then was he still indulging Wu Jingshu? The Xiao Yuchen she knew wouldn't act this way.

Born as the heir to the Marquis of Yongning, with the powerful Tang family as his backing, Xiao Yuchen had never known what it was to accommodate others. He lived by his own set of rules, acting impulsively and rarely considering others' feelings. Of course, whether as the heir or the Marquis himself, he never needed to concern himself with the feelings of others.

Could it be that Xiao Yuchen, like her, had been reborn?

The thought flashed through her mind and was quickly dismissed. Xiao Yuchen couldn't be reborn, for his attitude towards her was the same as in the previous life, like towards a stranger.

They had been entangled for so many years in their previous life. If Xiao Yuchen had been reborn, he couldn't possibly act like this.

Many things in this life were different from the previous one. She didn't know if it was because she was reborn or if someone else had been reborn like her. But no matter how much had changed, she had to call off her engagement with Xiao Yuchen; today's tasks had to be accomplished.

The group, each with their own thoughts, ascended the mountain. Reaching the gates of Chongguang Temple, Tang Shuyi was somewhat out of breath. Her body was delicate and would require more exercise in the future. In her previous life, she had died of overwork, essentially due to burnout, as her body couldn't handle the strain and finally gave out.

In this life, she was determined not to overexert herself, to take good care of her body, and to live a long and healthy life.

At that moment, a young monk in grey approached them. He appeared to be seventeen or eighteen, with handsome features. Approaching with measured steps, he greeted them, "Monk Changjing greets the patrons. Are you from the Marquis of Yongning's residence?"

Tang Shuyi nodded. She had already informed Chongguang Temple the day before of their plans to offer incense today and possibly rest at noon, asking them to reserve rooms. Of course, this was a privilege afforded to the distinguished Marquis's residence.

"Patrons, please follow me," Monk Changjing gestured invitingly. Tang Shuyi stepped forward, with Madam Wu beside her, smiling, "It seems the Marquis's wife has gone to great lengths."

"It is my duty," Tang Shuyi replied.

As they spoke, they followed the young monk Changjing toward the temple's back courtyard. Along the way, incense smoke curled through the air and flowers and trees abounded, affirming Chongguang Temple as a place of exceptional beauty.

Shortly thereafter, they arrived at a serene courtyard. Stepping inside, another young monk approached to greet them. Changjing instructed him to arrange rooms for Madam Wu and her two daughters, then led Tang Shuyi and Xiao Yuchen into an elegant and tranquil guest room. Turning to Xiao Yuchen, he said, "Noble guest, your room is in the neighboring courtyard."

Naturally, men and women would not be housed in the same courtyard.

"Mother, I will come back in a while," Xiao Yuchen said to Tang Shuyi.

Tang Shuyi nodded. "Be careful in all things."

"I understand," Xiao Yuchen replied, knowing full well what needed his cautious attention.

Accompanied by Changming and Changfeng, he followed Monk Changjing into a guest room in the adjacent courtyard. Once Changjing had departed, he whispered to Changming, "Keep a close watch on the people from the Wu residence. Inform me immediately of any actions they take."

Changming solemnly acknowledged the command and left. Xiao Yuchen then addressed Changfeng, "Stay alert with me. Don't let anyone exploit any loopholes."

Changfeng replied, "Understood, young master."

Inside Madam Wu's room, she marveled at the elegantly comfortable quarters, remarking to her daughters, "This is the advantage of power and influence! I've never stayed in such a comfortable guest room during my previous visits to Chongguang Temple."

Pointing out the window, she continued, "This courtyard, they say, is reserved only for the royal family and the households of dukes and marquises."

Hearing this, envy painted the faces of Wu Jingyu and Wu Jingya. Madam Wu turned to Wu Jingyu and said, "If today is successful, you too will enjoy such treatment in the future."

Wu Jingyu nodded vigorously, her eyes alight with anticipation, as if she were already the esteemed daughter-in-law of the Yongning Marquis's household.

Madam Wu then looked toward Wu Jingya. "Rest assured, I will make plans for you as well. I am determined to see you both live the life of the privileged."

Meanwhile, Wu Jingyun was busy instructing her maids, Xing'er and another personal attendant Tao'er, to keep a close watch on Madam Wu and Wu Jingya.

Tang Shuyi did the same, cautioning her maids, Cuizhu and Cuiyun, to be discreet in their actions.

A grand drama was about to unfold...

After resting for a while, Tang Shuyi and Madam Wu, along with their daughters, stepped out. At the entrance of the courtyard, they encountered Xiao Yuchen and Monk Changjing. A visit to the temple naturally called for offering incense, so Changjing led the group to the temple's front courtyard to pay their respects.

In her previous life, Tang Shuyi was a staunch defender of scientific atheism, but the surreal occurrence of transmigration forced her to reconsider her beliefs. Taking the incense from the young monk, she lit it and inserted it into the incense burner, kneeling devoutly.

She prayed for her grandparents to have a peaceful and happy next life and wished for "Tang Shuyi"—referring to her previous incarnation—to live a long, happy, and smooth life.

Of course, this Tang Shuyi referred to her predecessor.

After offering incense, the group proceeded to the back mountain of Chongguang Temple. The season had painted the mountains behind the temple in a breathtaking palette of red leaves. Madame Wu, eager for her daughter Wu Jingshu to spend more time with Xiao Yuchen, coaxed Tang Shuyi to distance themselves from the younger ones, and Tang Shuyi complied gracefully.

Meanwhile, Wu Jingshu occasionally struck up conversations with Xiao Yuchen, who responded perfunctorily. His mind was on guard against the Wu family's schemes, leaving him little interest in the scenery and making time seem to drag.

As noon approached and the sun reached its zenith, the group returned for their meal and rest. Normally, as a man, Xiao Yuchen wouldn't dine with the Wu sisters, but Madame Wu insisted, "We are all family here. The young master should join us."

Tang Shuyi and Xiao Yuchen were uncertain about her intentions but agreed nonetheless. They were both extremely cautious throughout the meal, but nothing untoward happened until they retired to their rooms. Still, before parting, Tang Shuyi reiterated her warning to Xiao Yuchen to be vigilant.

Back in her room, Tang Shuyi dispatched Cui Zhu and Cui Yun to keep an eye on the Wu family and stepped out. On her way, she encountered a young monk and asked, "Where can I light an eternal lamp?"

"Let this humble monk guide the benefactor," offered the young monk.

Thanking him, Tang Shuyi followed to the Hall of Eternal Light. Inside, she saw rows of flickering lamps adorning the large altar.

She presented a thousand-liang silver note to the monk overseeing the hall, requesting, "Please light an eternal lamp for me."

The monk accepted the note, filled a large lamp with oil, lit the wick with a fire starter, and placed it on the altar.

Standing before the lamp, Tang Shuyi thought to herself, "I don't know why I became you, nor do I know your current state. But now that I have become you, I will shoulder the responsibilities and protect what you were meant to protect."
