Chapter 71: Think for Yourself
When Steward Zhao reached the hall, he saw Wu Guoliang pacing back and forth like an ant on a hot pan. He approached and bowed, then said, "Minister Wu, you haven't left yet?"
Having waited in the hall for an entire afternoon only to be greeted by such a remark from Steward Zhao, Wu Guoliang was so furious his nose was almost crooked. He wanted to explode with rage, but he dared not, even before a mere servant steward of the Marquis's residence.
"Steward Zhao, has the Marchioness finished her work?" Wu Guoliang attempted to force a smile, but it was futile. He added, "I really don't understand what happened today!"
"Minister Wu," Steward Zhao bowed superficially, impeccably so, then said, "If you don't understand what's going on, surely someone in your household does. What do you wish to discuss with the Marchioness without knowing the full story? Baseless talk?"
"This... this..."
Wu Guoliang was at a loss for words, fully aware of Steward Zhao's implication. He had waited here for so long just to smooth things over. This had always been his way of handling affairs, minimizing big issues and dissolving small ones. As for right and wrong, there was no need to delve too deeply.
But now, the Marchioness clearly wanted a thorough clarification of the matter.
"Minister Wu, I'll repeat the same advice: come back when you have everything sorted out," Steward Zhao said.
Wu Guoliang heaved a deep sigh before hastening away. He harbored an intense ire towards Wu Jingyun, for the troubles that befell him were not beyond his predictions. Even if Wu Jingyun was not directly responsible for the mishaps, she was inevitably linked to them.
Moreover, she had been residing at the Zhang residence for some time.
…
When Tang Shuyi received news of Wu Guoliang's departure, she was dining with Xiao Yuchen and Xiao Yuzhu. She had already shared the day's events at Shanglin Academy with them. Xiao Yuchen's hand trembled as he held his chopsticks, overwhelmed by the unexpected consequences of hiding Liu Biqin in Meihua Alley.
First came the accusations, which could have led to dire consequences had his mother not acted swiftly.
Then there was Wu Jingyun calling off their engagement over his feelings for Biqin, which itself had stirred quite the commotion. Just when he thought the matter was settled with the annulment, more issues awaited him.
He even doubted, for a moment, whether rescuing Biqin had been a mistake. But he immediately suppressed such thoughts; it was not right to think that way.
Observing Xiao Yuchen's distress, Tang Shuyi remained silent, allowing him to ponder on his own. Experiencing such trials, she mused, might be beneficial for them; without adversity, how could they appreciate the rainbow?
"What did you learn at school today?" Tang Shuyi inquired of Xiao Yuzhu.
Sensing Tang Shuyi's disquiet, Xiao Yuzhu dutifully replied, "The teacher discussed 'Nü Jie' (Admonitions for Women)."
Tang Shuyi's gaze dropped as she hummed in acknowledgment, "After dinner, come join me for a reading session."
Just as men studied the Four Books for imperial examinations, women had their own set of Four Books, including 'Nü Jie', 'Neixun', 'Nü Lunyu', and 'Nü Fan Jie Lu', all teaching women about compliance, virtue, and the Three Obediences and Four Virtues.
Though Tang Shuyi scoffed at these notions, she couldn't prevent their instruction in the family school; otherwise, Xiao Yuzhu and the other girls from the second branch would have little prospect of marriage. Nonetheless, she didn't wish for Xiao Yuzhu to be constrained by these ideologies, so she took it upon herself to enlighten her further.
After the meal, Xiao Yuchen seemed to want to speak but faltered. Tang Shuyi pretended not to notice and, taking Xiao Yuzhu by the hand, led her to the study. She pulled out the 'Records of the Grand Historian' and began reading and explaining it to her.
A literary giant once said that reading enlightens the mind and sharpens the vision, but it depends on what one reads. Tang Shuyi firmly believed that studying history was the best way to gain knowledge. Every event and figure, noble or ignoble, represented their era. They were sources of wisdom and lessons to be learned.
As for Xiao Yuchen, she had imparted many principles to him already. Now, it was time for him to contemplate them himself. She couldn't forever be his guiding light; he needed to learn to navigate his own way.
The mother and daughter read for a while before it was time to rest. Tang Shuyi instructed Xiao Yuzhu to retire to her room. As she was leaving, Xiao Yuzhu asked, "Mother, how long will you punish brother this time?"
Tang Shuyi smiled. "Why? Do you pity him?"
Xiao Yuzhu shook her head. "No, it's just... just..."
Tang Shuyi stroked her head, "Your brother made quite a significant error this time. He needs to reflect properly. Stop bringing him snacks."
Xiao Yuzhu blushed at her mother's words, and with a gentle pat, Tang Shuyi encouraged, "Off to bed with you now."
Xiao Yuzhu nodded and left. Tang Shuyi ordered Cui Zhu and Cui Yun to prepare hot water for her bath. They prompted the maids to bring hot water, one arranged the clothes and fragrant soap for the bath, and the other scattered petals in the tub. Once everything was ready, Cui Yun went to summon Tang Shuyi.
Tang Shuyi let Cuizhu and Cuiyun help her remove her clothing before stepping over the edge of the tub. As her entire body submerged in the water, wrapped in warmth, she exhaled in comfort.
With her eyes closed, she reflected on the events that had unfolded since her arrival from another time. A wry smile formed on her lips. Initially, she had wanted to live a life of ease, but was life ever so accommodating? Even surrounded by luxury and served by a retinue of maids and servants, troubles would arise, and a single misstep could spell disaster for her entire family.
Still, one couldn't really do nothing but indulge in pleasures—wouldn't that be a waste of life? All in all, she felt her current days were quite pleasant.
Feeling sufficiently soaked, she lifted her arms to rest them on the side of the tub, and Cuiyun came over with a towel to wash her. Tang Shuyi asked, "How goes the inquiry into the person close to Princess Changping?"
"That person left the Princess's residence today, and after Changming saw them, she sent me back. I'm not sure how the rest of the investigation went," Cuiyun replied.
Tang Shuyi hummed in acknowledgment, "Ask Changming for more details later."
"Yes," Cuiyun responded once again.
After she was dried off, Cuizhu quickly wrapped her in a thick robe, commenting, "It's getting colder by the day, we should start burning coal in the rooms soon."
"Let's start tomorrow," Tang Shuyi decided.
She was sensitive to the cold, now feeling a chill even when sleeping at night.
"Housekeeper Zhao had people buy some coal a few days ago," Cuiyun mentioned.
Tang Shuyi hummed in response as she walked to the inner chamber and climbed into bed, then suddenly asked, "Do they burn coal in the cottages on the estate?"
"Why would the cottages use coal?" Cuizhu said. "But they all have heated kang beds. Once the kang is heated, the room becomes warm."
Lying down, Tang Shuyi pondered. With the cold setting in, life at the cottages would likely become even more difficult for Liu Biqin. Would she endure it? If not, what would she do? Run away? Seek a new patron?
In her heart, Tang Shuyi hoped Liu Biqin would not be able to bear the hardships and would seek a way out. As for what to do if she were discovered, as long as she didn't appear on the grounds of the Yongning Marquis's estate, even if she herself claimed that Xiao Yuchen once hid her in Plum Alley, they could deny it.
Of course, Liu Biqin wouldn't be so foolish.
Chapter 72: Don't Even Think About Promotion
The Great Qian Dynasty held court every ten days, and the following day was one such occasion. Wu Guoliang rose from bed at the hour of Yin, his concubine, Hu Shi, assisting him with his attire.
"Send someone to the Zhang residence and summon Jingyun back; she cannot stay there indefinitely," Wu Guoliang instructed Hu Shi, who was temporarily in charge of the inner household affairs.
Hu Shi acknowledged the order, and Wu Guoliang let out a long sigh. He had hardly slept the previous night, his mind preoccupied with thoughts of resolving the issue at hand.
Fang Shan's declaration of Xiao Yuzhen's "moral deficiency" was undoubtedly linked to Wu Jingyun. However, with her residing at the Zhang estate, he lacked evidence and means to investigate. How was he to explain this to the Marquise of Yongning?
He had hoped that the Marquise of Yongning, like before, would be appeased with some compensatory gifts and the matter would be put to rest. But clearly, this time, the Marquise was taking matters more seriously.
Leaving Hu Shi's quarters with a furrowed brow, he boarded his sedan chair to attend the court. Upon reaching the outer court of Qianqing Palace, he encountered the Duke of Tang and greeted him with a deep bow, "Your Grace, good morning."
The Duke of Tang, aware of Wu Guoliang's motive for the cordial greeting, feigned ignorance and responded, "Master Wu, good morning to you as well."
"Oh, I wouldn't presume," Wu Guoliang replied, bowing again to the Duke of Tang. Especially now, he dared not take the Duke's greetings lightly.
The Duke of Tang, adjusting his sleeves and showing no intention of further conversation, left Wu Guoliang uncertain if the Duke was aware of the incident at the Shanglin Academy. He contemplated seeking the Duke's favor but feared that his plea might inadvertently inform the Duke of the situation, potentially turning his wrath upon him.
After carefully weighing his words, Wu Guoliang whispered to the Duke, "I regret the inconvenience caused by the dissolution of my daughter's betrothal to the Crown Prince."
"Marriages are meant to forge alliances, but if the children are incompatible, it's better to call off the engagement," the Duke replied nonchalantly.
"Indeed, indeed," Wu Guoliang replied with a subservient smile, bending slightly. Just as he was about to say more, the palace gates opened, and the officials began to enter. He quickly bowed to the Duke and retreated to the back.
The court officials took their places according to their ranks, with the higher officials standing at the front. As a super-grade noble, the Duke of Tang naturally stood in the foremost position, while Wu Guoliang, a fourth-grade official, stood further back in the middle.
Once inside the court hall, the ministers began to present their memorials. Wu Guoliang, standing in his designated spot, was preoccupied with his thoughts, paying little attention to the proceedings and keeping only one ear open to avoid missing anything crucial.
Suddenly, he heard someone declare, "Your Majesty, I have a report to present. The Vice Minister of the Ministry of Personnel, Wu Guoliang, has allowed his female family members to engage in private lending."
Wu Guoliang's mind buzzed. He quickly scurried forward and knelt with a thud, pleading, "Your Majesty, I have been wronged!"
"Master Wu, I haven't wronged you," retorted the Imperial Censor, Li Yuanchung. "In September, your wife lent one hundred and fifty taels of silver to someone named Zheng Shi. After the court session, I can summon that person to confront you."
"This..."
Wu Guoliang abruptly turned towards the Duke of Tang. He knew well that Li Yuanchung had close ties with the Duke. He was certain that it was the Duke who had instigated Li Yuanchung to accuse him.
They say the Duke of Tang is a cunning fox, and today Wu Guoliang truly understood why. Just moments ago, outside Qianqing Palace, he had exchanged pleasantries with the Duke, who had responded amiably. Little did he know that the Duke had already been plotting against him.
The Duke of Tang, feeling Wu Guoliang's gaze, stood straight, eyes fixed ahead, giving no acknowledgment to Wu Guoliang.
"Wu Guoliang, is what Li Aiqing said true?" came the Emperor's voice from above, leaving Wu Guoliang drenched in cold sweat. He stammered, "Your Majesty... I... I was unaware."
Duke Tang would not have brought up the matter at the early morning court session without good reason. His current animosity towards the Feng family is palpable.
The emperor scoffed coldly, "If one cannot manage one's own household, one's performance in official duties is likely subpar. Return home, take a two-month leave, and manage your household affairs before resuming your duties."
Wu Guoliang nearly fainted at this. It was a call for introspection! And at the very moment that was crucial for his promotion, how could he possibly be promoted after this incident? If he missed this opportunity, who knows how many more years he would have to wait.
But dare he object? He could only kneel and thank the emperor for his 'magnanimous grace'.
With the court session finally over, Wu Guoliang rushed to Duke Tang, grasped the hem of his robe, and pleaded, "Duke, why have you done this?"
Duke Tang did not deny his involvement in the morning's court events. Brushing off Wu Guoliang's hand, he retorted, "You've insulted me to my face, and you ask why?"
In Duke Tang's eyes, to bully his daughter and grandson was to bully him.
"But... but..."
Wu Guoliang wanted to say that this was too harsh, almost ruining his official career, but he dared not. Duke Tang was much more formidable than Lady Yongning Hou. It wasn't just his career at stake—if he truly angered Duke Tang, his very life could be at risk.
With a flick of his robe, Duke Tang strode away. At that moment, Wu Guoliang's immediate superior, Minister Miao Xin of the Ministry of Rites, passed by. Desperate and out of sorts, Wu Guoliang clutched at Miao Xin's sleeve, "Minister Miao..."
Miao Xin shook him off, sighed, and whispered, "How could you be so careless at such a critical moment?"
Wu Guoliang had previously sought to curry favor with Miao Xin for a promotion, but now, even if Wu offered him a mountain of gold, Miao Xin wouldn't dare recommend him. The emperor's remark, "Your performance in duties is hardly satisfactory," had doomed his chances for promotion.
"Minister Miao..." Wu Guoliang's face contorted in distress, he had not anticipated such severe consequences.
He finally realized the consequences of failing to manage his household properly. Clenching his fists and gritting his teeth, he resolved to visit the Zhang family to find out what exactly had happened. But as he approached his sedan, he saw Zhao, the steward of the Yongning Hou estate, waiting.
Upon seeing him, Zhao stepped forward and bowed, "Master Wu, my lady requests your presence at the Zhang estate."
Wu Guoliang took a deep breath. Lady Yongning Hou was going to the Zhang estate for an explanation. He needed to go too; his second daughter could no longer be indulged.
"I'm aware, I'll head there now," he said.
Meanwhile, Tang Shuyi was on the carriage to the Zhang estate, sitting across from Xiao Yuchen.
"Mother, are we going to the Zhang family to demand an explanation?" Xiao Yuchen had been suddenly whisked into the carriage and was unaware of Tang Shuyi's intentions for visiting the Zhang estate.
"It's not just about seeking an explanation," Tang Shuyi said.
"What else is there to do?" Xiao Yuxin asked.
Tang Shuyi glanced at him. "You'll know when the time comes."
Xiao Yuxin simply uttered an "Oh," not particularly keen on meeting Miss Wu the second.
Half a quarter of an hour later, the carriage arrived at the entrance of the Zhang residence. Since a visiting card had been sent in advance, the elderly nursemaid by Old Madam Zhang's side was already waiting at the door and hurriedly greeted Tang Shuyi with a bow. Simultaneously, the steward of the Zhang family saluted Xiao Yuxin and intended to lead him to the front courtyard.
Seeing this, Tang Shuyi said, "Let him pay his respects to the Old Madam first."
The steward quickly agreed. As a junior, it was proper for Xiao Yuxin to pay respects to Old Madam Zhang. However, Xiao Yuxin had broken off an engagement with their granddaughter, and it was evident that the intentions of this mother and son were somewhat unfriendly today.
Led by the steward and the nursemaid, the mother and son made their way to the inner courtyard where Old Madam Zhang resided. Upon arrival, both Tang Shuyi and Xiao Yuxin performed the courtesy due from juniors and maintained impeccable etiquette.
After sitting down and exchanging a few pleasantries, Old Madam Zhang inquired about the purpose of Tang Shuyi's visit today, to which Tang Shuyi replied, "Let's wait until Master Wu arrives before we discuss."
Chapter 73: Take Action
Tang Shuyi's mention of waiting for Master Wu to arrive clenched Old Madam Zhang's hand resting on her knee into a fist. It seemed that the Marquise had truly come with ill intentions today. As she pondered over a solution, she heard Tang Shuyi inquire further, "Is Miss Wu the second in the residence?"
Old Madam Zhang forced a stiff smile, "She is, she has been living here for some time. She lost her mother at a young age, so it's up to this old woman to provide extra guidance."
Tang Shuyi glanced at her hands, murmuring, "Indeed, more guidance is necessary."
Old Madam Zhang's brows knotted, "What has Jingyun done again?"
Instead of answering, Tang Shuyi said, "Old Madam, please have Miss Wu the second come over. We should discuss the matter face-to-face."
After pondering for a moment, Old Madam Zhang instructed the nursemaid beside her to summon Wu Jingyun, then said, "Marquise, please speak your mind."
Pressed repeatedly for answers, Tang Shuyi no longer held back, recounting the incident at Shanglin Academy before adding, "Old Madam, it's well-known that your esteemed family has close ties with Director Fang. His public defense of Miss Wu the second, accusing my son of moral failing, would lead no one to believe that the Zhang family isn't involved."
Old Madam Zhang's liver-spotted hands, even clenched together, couldn't stop trembling, indicating her intense anger. At over sixty years of age, her hair graying, such agitation seemed hard for Tang Shuyi to bear.
She said, "Old Madam, I have nothing but respect for the years of friendship you shared with my mother-in-law. Today, I simply wish to inquire how Miss Wu the second's indignation can be assuaged."
Old Madam Zhang exhaled, striving to stabilize her emotions, "Marquise, let's clarify the situation first. If it truly originates from my household, I assure you, you will have your explanation."
"Very well," said Tang Shuyi.
In truth, her visit today was not to seek explanations, but to thoroughly resolve the matter.
At that moment, the door curtain was lifted, and Wu Jingyun entered. She had clearly lost weight and carried an air of melancholy about her. After paying respects to Elder Madam Zhang, she turned to Tang Shuyi and greeted, "Madam Marquess, I trust you're well."
Tang Shuyi hummed in acknowledgment, and Wu Jingyun's gaze shifted to Xiao Yuchen, her grip tightening on the handkerchief she held.
Elder Madam Zhang then broached the topic of Director Fang speaking ill of Xiao Yuchen's moral character, and questioned, "Was it your doing?"
Wu Jingyun appeared stunned, seemingly clueless about the situation. Then, the voice of a nanny rang out, "Young Master Five, the Elder Madam has guests, you mustn't intrude."
Followed by a young man's voice: "I'm aware. Is it the Marquess of Yongning's wife? If someone is to blame, let it fall on me. If there are grievances to be aired, direct them my way."
"Oh, Young Master Five, please don't add to the confusion."
"Step aside!"
The door curtain was then briskly swept open, and a young man of about eighteen or nineteen strode in. He paid his respects to Elder Madam Zhang before turning to Tang Shuyi, his anger palpable as he declared, "Madam Marquess, my cousin was betrothed to the Heir of Xiao, yet he maintains a concubine elsewhere. If this isn't a failing of moral character, what is it?"
Pointing at Xiao Yuchen, he continued, "He's the one responsible, the one who harbored the person. You transfer her away and clean up the trail as if nothing ever happened?"
"Young Master Zhang," Xiao Yuchen suddenly stood, his gaze seething as he addressed Zhang, "Is this the tone you use when speaking to my mother?"
Young Master Zhang was momentarily taken aback, realizing his manners had indeed been lacking, not befitting of a gentleman. But it was their Marquess household's bullying that drove him to such discourtesy. He retorted, "Xiao Yuchen, you..."
"Little Five, hold your tongue," Elder Madam Zhang interjected sharply.
"Grandmother..."
"Elder Madam, Director Wu has arrived," announced the nanny from outside.
"Let him in," Elder Madam Zhang instructed.
The door curtain was lifted once more, and Wu Guoliang made his entrance. After surveying the room, he paid his respects to both Elder Madam Zhang and Tang Shuyi. As Elder Madam Zhang was about to speak, Tang Shuyi took the floor.
"Now that Director Wu is also here, allow me to say a few words," Tang Shuyi rose, her gaze settling on Wu Jingyun. "All things considered, it seems Miss Wu still harbors resentment towards my son Yuchen. I've brought him here today for you to air your grievances."
"Yuchen, come here," Tang Shuyi beckoned Xiao Yuchen.
Xiao Yuchen glanced at Wu Jingyun, his eyes brimming with disdain. He was thoroughly fed up with Miss Wu. Time and again she tested his patience; did she take him for a clay figurine to be molded at will?
With a taut expression, he moved to stand beside Tang Shuyi, mere steps away from Wu Jingyun.
Tang Shuyi noticed his displeasure but paid it no mind. She addressed Wu Jingyun, "Miss Wu, I know you harbor resentment towards Yuchen. Today, I'm giving you the chance to vent."
As she spoke, she drew a half-foot long dagger, sheathed in silver, from her sleeve and unsheathed it with a decisive flick of her wrists.
"Madame Marquess."
"Madame Marquess."
Both Dowager Zhang and Wu Guoliang exclaimed in alarm upon seeing the dagger. Tang Shuyi gestured dismissively at them, then took two steps forward, seized Wu Jingyun's hand, and thrust the dagger into her grasp. Gazing intently into her eyes, she said earnestly:
"If you feel wronged by Yuchen, if you despise him, here's your opportunity for retribution. In the presence of your grandmother and father, I, Tang Shuyi, give you my word: as long as you spare Yuchen's life today, no matter how gravely you injure him, I will not hold it against you. However, henceforth, you must cease harboring any malice towards him and the Marquess's estate. Agreed?"
"Mother!" Xiao Yuchen cried out in disbelief. He had done nothing to wrong Wu Jingyun; why should he be subject to her whims?
"Silence," Tang Shuyi rebuked coldly. Even though the sins he committed against Wu Jingyun in a past life remained uncommitted, his concealment of Liu Biqin in Plum Blossom Alley alone warranted a stern punishment. Previously, she had only made him kneel in the ancestral hall to avoid raising suspicion and prompting an investigation into Liu Biqin's whereabouts.
The Liang family had accused Xiao Yuchen of harboring a traitor's daughter, but without evidence. Shortly afterward, Xiao Yuchen had been beaten so severely he couldn't leave his bed, leading to speculations that weren't far from the truth.
Today presented an ideal opportunity for him to experience firsthand the consequences of his actions.
As for allowing Wu Jingyun to vent her frustration, that was just another motive.
Pulling Xiao Yuchen in front of Wu Jingyun, she said, "Miss Wu, here he is. Do as you will."
Xiao Yuchen clenched his fists, staring intently at Wu Jingyun. He couldn't fathom his mother's actions or understand why Wu Jingyun harbored such deep resentment towards him.
Wu Jingyun's grip on the dagger tightened. As she looked at the man before her, her vision blurred. In a previous life, she had set eyes on him at a banquet and etched his image deep in her heart, which led to a life filled with humiliation and suppression.
Recalling her past sufferings, she longed to plunge the dagger into him repeatedly, but the weapon felt as heavy as a thousand pounds and wouldn't budge.
At that moment, Xiao Yuchen spoke, "Miss Wu, our betrothal was arranged by our parents, and my family fulfilled all customary rites without fail. I personally delivered the betrothal gifts and treated your family with due respect. I fail to understand your hatred towards me, your relentless schemes against me."
Wu Jingyun clutched the dagger tightly, tears streaming down her face, but she remained silent.
Xiao Yuchen continued, "My mother believes your hatred stems from my affection for another, but my closeness to Miss Liu of the Liu family was no secret in the capital; surely, you were aware. If you agreed to our betrothal, weren't you prepared to accept this? Besides, what noblewoman would resort to violence upon learning her husband has affections for another?"
Tang Shuyi wanted to cover her face.
The gall of this scoundrel! Spouting such nonsense with righteous indignation. Fortunately, this is in ancient times. If it were the modern era, he'd be verbally torn to shreds.
At that moment, Xiao Yuchen pointed mockingly at Zhang Wugongzi and taunted, "Not to mention others, even your cousin Zhang Wugongzi harbors feelings for you, yet he is betrothed to another. Has his fiancée ever sought his death? Has she ever contemplated annihilating the Zhang family entirely?"
By the end, Xiao Yuchen was so furious that his eyes turned red. How unlucky he was to be engaged to such a woman.
PS: Madame Hou's intent wasn't merely to have Wu Jingyun stab Xiao Yuchen once; she had other plans up her sleeve. Soft approach before force!
Chapter 74: Have You Cooled Off?
Xiao Yuchen had long been aware of Zhang Wugongzi's fondness for Wu Jingyun. They were about the same age and had been classmates at the academy. Initially, their relationship was neither good nor bad.
But ever since he became engaged to Wu Jingyun, Zhang Wugongzi had looked at him with disdain. During a verbal spat, Zhang Wugongzi inadvertently mentioned Wu Jingyun, sparking Xiao Yuchen's suspicions. After some inquiries, he confirmed that Zhang Wugongzi was smitten with Wu Jingyun.
He wasn't bothered; he had learned that it was Zhang Wugongzi who cherished Wu Jingyun, while she showed no interest in him. In truth, as long as Wu Jingyun could manage the household and remain respectful and virtuous in the future, even if she harbored feelings for another man, he wouldn't mind. After all, didn't he harbor thoughts of another woman himself?
But the irony is that some people can set fires as officials but forbid ordinary people from lighting lamps. It's acceptable for Zhang Wugongzi to be betrothed to another woman while harboring feelings for someone else. Yet, when he makes a mistake, it's as if he's committed a heinous crime, subjected to public denunciation and attacks, with Wu Jingyun even desiring to destroy the entire marquisate.
Where's the logic in that?
Hearing Xiao Yuchen's words, Zhang Wugongzi felt both embarrassed and angry. His deep-seated pain was laid bare, as if he had been stripped naked in public. Clenching his fists and stiffening his neck, he wanted to defend himself, but then the elderly Madame Zhang spoke:
"Madame Hou, it's my fault for not raising the child properly. This time, our Zhang family has indeed wronged you." Madame Zhang was worn out, having been strong all her life, only to find herself apologizing repeatedly in her old age.
Xiao Yuchen's words had also filled her with shame. Regardless of the internal dynamics, a lady of their stature should conduct herself with dignity. To call for violence against her betrothed merely because he harbored feelings for another was indeed unbecoming and suggested a lack of upbringing. Moreover, Xiao Yuchen had drawn a comparison using their own Zhang Wugongzi.
"Elder Madame, we must resolve the issue at its root. One of my purposes here today is to allow Miss Wu Jingyun to vent her anger." Tang Shuyi then turned to Wu Jingyun and said, "Miss Wu, please proceed. Once you've vented, you too will find release."
Wu Jingyun's hand tightly gripped the dagger as she peered through misty eyes at Xiao Yuchen's blurred figure. Memories of her past life flashed through her mind, and all her hatred erupted in that moment. She raised her hand holding the dagger and thrust it toward Xiao Yuchen's shoulder.
With a muffled sound, blood sprayed out accompanied by Xiao Yuchen's groan, drenching his clothes and staining her hands.
Tang Shuyi's heart skipped a beat, twisting with anxiety. Although she was prepared for Xiao Yuchen to be injured today, the sight of so much blood flowing from his body still filled her with worry and heartache.
Even though she wasn't his birth mother, having spent so much time together, how could she not have developed feelings for him? Yet, she restrained herself from helping Xiao Yuchen, having agreed beforehand that as long as Xiao Yuchen didn't die, she wouldn't intervene, no matter how many times he was stabbed.
At that moment, Elder Madame Zhang cried out loudly, "Quick, call the doctor!"
Wu Guoliang strode forward and delivered a slap to Wu Jingyun's face, exclaiming, "Did you just stab him because you were told to?"
When Xiao Yuchen was criticized for lacking integrity, the promotion he had painstakingly maneuvered for vanished, and he was confined at home to reflect for two months. After those two months, it was uncertain if his colleagues would marginalize him. His entire official career could very well be ruined by this.
Now that Xiao Yuchen has been stabbed, who knows what the Duke of Tang might do.
Biting his teeth in pain, Xiao Yuchen said, "Miss Wu, have you vented your anger? If not, stab me again."
"Oh no, why the stabbing," Wu Guoliang's heart almost leaped out of his chest as he helped Xiao Yuchen, saying, "Young Master Xiao, please sit down, and let the doctor bandage you soon."
However, Xiao Yuchen pushed him away, his eyes icy as he gazed at Wu Jingyun, repeating, "Miss Wu, have you vented your anger yet?"
Although he didn't understand why, his mother insisted on letting Miss Wu vent her anger on him. Now, the sharp pain made him clearly realize he was indeed wrong about the matter involving Liu Biqin. He should have sent her away after saving her, instead of kindly keeping her around, knowing full well the risks involved.
Look at the present situation; because of that incident, he almost faced charges, and the Marquis's mansion nearly fell into crisis. And Miss Wu still wouldn't let it go, disturbing the peace of the entire mansion.
On her end, Wu Jingyun, after hearing his question and looking at the profusely bleeding wound on his shoulder, took a deep breath and said, "From now on, all grievances between us are null and void."
However, hearing her words, Xiao Yuchen scoffed, "Miss Wu, our debts may be settled, but what about your schemes against me? Are we just going to forget about those?"
Although it's said that a true man shouldn't stoop to arguing with a woman, Xiao Yuchen had always felt he had done nothing wrong by Wu Jingyun. Now, having been stabbed by her—even if it was his mother's suggestion—he couldn't help feeling aggrieved.
"What do you want?" Wu Jingyun's emotions hadn't settled, and her bloodstained hand trembled incessantly.
"Nothing much," Xiao Yuchen said. "It just so happens that your father, grandmother, and cousin are here. It's time they also learn about what you've been up to."
Hearing his words, panic flashed across Wu Jingyun's face. Just then, voices from outside announced the arrival of the doctor, and in came a physician carrying a medicine box. Seeing Xiao Yuchen's blood-stained clothing, even the doctor was startled.
"Let's go behind the screen for bandaging," suggested Madam Zhang, pointing at the screen.
Tang Shuyi walked over and supported Xiao Yuchen. As he looked at her with eyes full of grievance, Tang Shuyi pretended not to notice and helped him walk behind the screen. The doctor and Wu Guoliang also went around to join them.
The doctor began bandaging Xiao Yuchen, while Wu Guoliang asked Tang Shuyi in a low voice, "Madam Marquis, do your words still hold true?"
He was referring to Tang Shuyi's earlier statement that as long as Wu Jingyun didn't kill Xiao Yuchen, she wouldn't pursue the matter.
"Of course they do," replied Tang Shuyi.
Looking at Wu Guoliang, who was now trying to ingratiate himself with a flattering smile, Tang Shuyi suddenly understood why Wu Jingyun had such an extreme temperament.
Having lost her biological mother at a young age and with a stepmother who was only sweet on the surface, she had suffered untold grievances since childhood. Wu Guoliang was not a man who clearly distinguished between gratitude and grudge; as long as issues could be smoothed over and appear calm on the surface, that was sufficient for him.
Growing up in such an environment, Wu Jingyun inevitably lacked love. Starved for affection, she clung to Xiao Yuchen after falling for him, hoping to monopolize his heart. However, Xiao Yuchen's indifference towards her led to a tragic love.
Meanwhile, having endured Mrs. Wu's oppression for a long time and unable to voice her suffering, Wu Jingyun must have contemplated various methods of resistance and retaliation, seizing any chance to fight back. But whether her methods were right or effective, no one was there to analyze with her.
Although Old Lady Zhang did guide her, it's apparent that she doted on her more. Moreover, they didn't spend every day together, probably lacking the intimacy to share everything. Many of Wu Jingyun's plans likely remained unspoken to Old Lady Zhang.
She is a pitiable figure, but now Wu Jingyun's extremism has turned towards Xiao Yuchen and their Marquis mansion. Even with sympathy, further concessions cannot be afforded.
If nothing more is done about her, Wu Jingyun might truly start seeing them as paper tigers.
Chapter 75: Let's Talk
After the bandaging, Wu Guoliang and the doctor left, leaving Xiao Yuchen pale-faced, sitting on a chair. Observing the large patch of blood on his body and his pallid face, Tang Shuyi felt a twinge of heartache. After all, having lived together for so long, even if she wasn't his birth mother, a deep bond had formed.
"You reap what you sow. Hasty actions without thorough consideration lead to such outcomes," Tang Shuyi said in a low voice, sitting beside him.
"Mother, I know I was wrong about that matter, but I never wronged Miss Wu in any way," Xiao Yuchen said with a hint of grievance.
"You don't need to understand why I let her hurt you. But now that she has stabbed you, you owe her nothing. If she does anything to harm you or our Marquis mansion again, don't be lenient," Tang Shuyi's voice was laced with cold resolve by the end.
Xiao Yuchen pursed his pale lips, "I understand, Mother."
Tang Shuyi hummed in acknowledgment and continued, "Don't worry about the aftermath. The things she did before might not be public, but her family needs to know."
Without the protection of Wu Guoliang and the Zhang family, Wu Jingyun's possession of the Marquis mansion's secrets posed no threat.
Xiao Yuchen agreed, and Tang Shuyi helped him around the screen. They saw Wu Jingyun and Zhang Wugong kneeling on the ground, being scolded by Old Lady Zhang. Xiao Yuchen whispered upon seeing the two, "Actually, they are quite a match."
Tang Shuyi also glanced at Wu Jingyun and Zhang Wugong kneeling. The woman was graceful and beautiful, and the man was gentle and refined; indeed, they looked well-suited. If Wu Jingyun had married Zhang Wugong in her previous life, she likely would have lived well.
She and Zhang Wugong were childhood sweethearts, and his affection for her ran deep. With the Zhang family as her maternal family and Old Lady Zhang's protection, she surely wouldn't have suffered.
As for the taboo against marrying close relatives, ancient people were not particular about that.
As for this life...
Zhang Wugong was already betrothed. If he were to marry Wu Jingyun, that would mean breaking off his engagement. But then, what about the girl who got jilted?
Of course, this is someone else's business, and she was just musing; how things should be handled is up to them.
"Madam Marquis," said Old Madam Zhang as she saw Tang Shuyi and Xiao Yuchen emerge from behind the screen. Rising to her feet, she deeply bowed towards Tang Shuyi and gestured towards Zhang Wugongzi, saying, "This calamity is all because of my family's miscreant. I am so sorry. He is here now, at your mercy for any punishment."
Tang Shuyi gazed upon Old Madam Zhang's wrinkled face, filled with remorse, and sighed internally. A wayward child brings endless worry, even into old age.
Still, necessary matters must be addressed. She said, "Old Madam, there are things that I should have said last time. Considering the long engagement between Miss Wu and my son Yuchen, and the affection that had grown between us, I held my peace. But now, I must speak."
Clenching her fists, Old Madam Zhang knew that no good news was forthcoming, yet she responded, "Please speak, Madam Marquis."
Taking a seat, Tang Shuyi glanced at Wu Jingyun, who was kneeling with her head bowed, and then addressed Old Madam Zhang, "Are Miss Wu's two maids, Xing'er and Tao'er, within the residence?"
Puzzled by Tang Shuyi's inquiry about Wu Jingyun's maids, Old Madam Zhang frowned slightly before responding, "They are here, probably outside the door."
Xing'er and Tao'er were Wu Jingyun's personal maids, who typically accompanied her everywhere.
"Call those two in," instructed Tang Shuyi.
With a grave expression, Old Madam Zhang called towards the doorway, "Let Xing'er and Tao'er come in."
"Grandmother!" Wu Jingyun cried out in panic, realizing what Tang Shuyi intended to do. She feared Tang Shuyi would reveal her deeds at Chongguang Temple. Once disclosed, her father would surely abandon her.
Being abandoned by her father would mean dire consequences, even with her grandmother's protection.
Old Madam Zhang looked at her, wordless, her eyes filled with disappointment, sorrow, and regret.
Xing'er and Tao'er, who were just outside, entered through the curtains within moments. Witnessing the scene, especially Xiao Yuchen's blood-stained garments, they trembled in fear. Having been interrogated by Tang Shuyi at Chongguang Temple, they knew the gravity of the situation likely concerned that incident. Without a word, both maids knelt down swiftly.
Old Madam Zhang glanced at the shivering pair, then turned to Tang Shuyi, "Madam Marquis, they are here. Please, speak your piece."
"Old Madam, the incident at Chongguang Temple wasn't as simple as it appeared. There's more to the story, and these two maids know it well," revealed Tang Shuyi.
"What?" Wu Guoliang sprang to his feet, "More to the story? What is it?"
All his misfortunes had begun with the Chongguang Temple incident, a mere mention of which now set him on edge.
However, Tang Shuyi didn't address his question, instead turning to Old Madam Zhang, "You might not believe me. Let them tell you."
"Speak, tell us now!" Wu Guoliang had lost his usual composure.
Old Madam Zhang cast a displeased glance at him, then addressed Xing'er and Tao'er, "You two, speak up."
Apricot and Peach shivered like sieves, their eyes pleadingly turned towards Wu Jingyun for salvation. However, Wu Jingyun kept her head down, offering them no sign of hope. Wu Guoliang, seeing their silence, stepped forward and barked menacingly, "Speak now or I'll sell you both, along with your worthless parents!"
Apricot and Peach were both born and raised in the Wu household, with their entire family's servitude contracts held by the Wus. For Wu Guoliang, selling them off was as easy as lifting a finger. The two once again sought Wu Jingyun's gaze. She remained kneeling, her head bowed in silence, leaving them no choice but to reveal everything they knew.
They recounted everything, including how Wu Jingyun had instructed her wet nurse's son, Liu Dayong, to go to Chongguang Temple a day early and light enchanting incense in Xiao Yuxian's room before noon. They also confessed to drugging Wu Jingshu and Monk Chang Jing under Wu Jingyun's orders, leaving out no detail.
After their confession, the room fell into a silence so profound that one could hear a pin drop. Wu Guoliang, Elder Madam Zhang, and Young Master Zhang stared at Wu Jingyun in disbelief, unable to fathom that she could have orchestrated such malevolence.
Meanwhile, Wu Jingyun collapsed entirely onto the floor.
Chapter 76: Sixty Strokes of the Cane
Over the years, Wu Guoliang had navigated his career and personal life with extreme caution and diligence. Although the Wu family was known for its scholarly tradition, with generations of officials in its lineage, none had held high office. His attainment of a fourth-rank position was already the pinnacle within the Wu family.
His marriage to a daughter from the Zhang family, a household that rarely sought government positions yet boasted a great scholar as the head of the Shanglin Academy, had significantly bolstered his standing. It was through the Zhang family's connections, coupled with his own scheming, that he had reached his current station.
His wife, a paragon of virtue and obedience, always put him first. Aside from her frail health, she was faultless. He had always believed their daughter to be exemplary in every way, never imagining she could harbor such venom.
Feng had once hinted to him that Wu Jingshu had fallen victim to Wu Jingyun's machinations. Overwhelmed with myriad concerns at the time, Wu Guoliang had sought only to quell the turmoil, indifferent to whatever sibling rivalry lay beneath, convinced that both were to blame. He had never delved deeper.
Only now did he realize the extent of Wu Jingshu's suffering, all orchestrated by the daughter before him. Why? Wu Jingshu's disgrace would tarnish her as well! Why would she commit such a self-destructive act?
"Why... why would you do this?" Wu Guoliang's voice trembled as he approached Wu Jingyun, crouching down, bewildered, he asked, "Though your mother passed early, I've always treated you fairly since you were a child. As for your... your stepmother, despite her intentions to usurp your betrothal, had you informed me, I would have intervened on your behalf. How could you commit such an act? Are you unaware that once exposed, our entire Wu clan, especially the females, would suffer the consequences? What drove you to this?"
Wu Jingyun, who had been hanging her head low, suddenly lifted it. With a scornful look, she retorted, "You claim you've never wronged me? Ha, what a farce! When I was eight, Wu Jingshu pushed me into the lake, nearly drowning me. After being rescued, I told you it was Wu Jingshu, but she denied it. Although Feng defended me, her underlying implication was that I envied Wu Jingshu and was framing her. And how did that turn out? The incident was swept under the rug."
"At ten, I fell ill with a cold, and a month of medicine brought no relief. Do you know why?" Wu Jingyun sneered, "Feng had someone add cold-inducing substances to my medicine. Because my illness lingered, Feng suggested I move to a quiet place for recuperation, relegating me to the remote and dilapidated courtyard I now inhabit. Soon after, Wu Jingshu took over my former residence."
"This... you never told me!" Wu Guoliang's face twisted in embarrassment, having never suspected Feng of such malice.
Wu Jingyun laughed mockingly again, "Father, is it that I never told you, or you simply never cared?"
"This..." Wu Guoliang was rendered speechless.
"Such instances are countless. My clothes, jewelry, even the ornaments in my room, though seemingly untouched, are all castoffs from Wu Jingshu and Wu Jingya, most ill-suited for me," Wu Jingyun added.
At this moment, Elder Madam Zhang burst into tears, pointing at Wu Guoliang, she exclaimed, "You... you are utterly unworthy of being a father. Why did I ever allow my daughter to marry you?"
Master Zhang clenched his fists so tightly with hatred that it seemed the next moment they would strike upon Wu Guoliang.
Tang Shuyi let out another heavy sigh. She could imagine the difficulties Wu Jingyun faced in her daily life, but only upon hearing it did she realize the true extent of her hardship.
Xiao Yuchen was stunned, knowing the Hou Mansion's back courtyard was peaceful. He had heard that in some households, the women of the inner quarters engaged fiercely with each other, but today was the first time he had learned in such detail that the struggles between these women could be so vicious.
The elderly Madame Zhang, having wept inconsolably, grasped Wu Jingyun, questioning why she had not confided in her earlier. Wu Jingyun merely shook her head. Tang Shuyi suspected that Feng's actions were impeccable, leaving Wu Jingyun defenseless and without recourse even if she had spoken up.
Yet, with Feng's prowess, having suffered so much at her hands, why hadn't Wu Jingyun learned a thing or two? Otherwise, she wouldn't have been so disastrously defeated in her previous life's struggle against Liu Biqin. But then again, considering Xiao Yuchen's heart belonged to Liu Biqin, all of Wu Jingyun's schemes would have been in vain regardless.
Sympathy aside, Wu Jingyun's plight was not her making, and Xiao Yuchen had already avenged her, settling their grievances. Nonetheless, there were things Tang Shuyi felt compelled to say.
After embracing Wu Jingyun and weeping for a while, Madame Zhang rose and deeply bowed to Tang Shuyi, saying, "Madame Hou, it was all Jingyun's fault before, and I apologize on her behalf. But this time, she truly had no part in it. It was all the doing of this scourge in my family. I leave him in your hands, to punish or kill as you see fit."
Madame Zhang truly loved Wu Jingyun, but had Wu Jingyun ever considered Madame Zhang and the Zhang family's well-being?
"Madame Zhang, my visit today is not to seek retribution," said Tang Shuyi. "However, wrongdoings must be faced with responsibility. But as for the punishment, I'll leave that to you."
Hearing her words, Madame Zhang looked towards Xiao Yuchen's pale face and the large bloodstain on his clothes, her hands clenched into fists once again. She closed her eyes briefly before calling out, "Nanny Zhang."
A nanny in her forties or fifties lifted the curtain and entered. Madame Zhang instructed her, "Go to the front yard and call over Zhang Da and Zhang Er."
As he spoke, his gaze turned resolutely towards Master Zhang, his voice firm, "For your selfish gains, you framed others. All these years of learning have been in vain. A punishment of sixty canes will serve as a lesson."
"Madame Zhang," Nanny Zhang immediately knelt down with a thud as soon as Madame Zhang finished speaking, pleading, "Madame, Zhang Da and Zhang Er are strong men. With sixty strokes of the cane, the young master will lose half his life."
"Only with a harsh punishment will he learn his lesson. Go now," Madame Zhang instructed.
Nanny Zhang, with shaky limbs, left to call the others, understanding why Madame Zhang was so stern once she saw the large bloodstain on Xiao Yuchen. The young master had been gravely injured, so it was only natural that their Master Zhang, the perpetrator, could not be let off lightly.
With trembling hands and feet, Nanny Zhang left, her heart still resentful towards Wu Jingyun. If not for her, the young master wouldn't have suffered so greatly.
Before long, the Zhang family's two guards, Zhang Da and Zhang Er, arrived. Master Zhang walked out with a tragic expression, and Wu Jingyun, watching his retreating figure, burst into loud weeping. Soon after, the sounds of the cane striking flesh and Master Zhang's muffled groans echoed from outside.
Madame Zhang's hands remained tightly clenched; this was her most beloved grandson, how could she not be heartbroken? Yet if she didn't ensure he learned his lesson this time, he might cause even greater disasters in the future.
Chapter 77 You're Even More Foolish Than He Is
The sounds of the cane continued, but Master Zhang's muffled groans gradually subsided until there was silence.
Nurse Zhang lifted the curtain and entered, dropping to her knees in panic. "Old Madam," she exclaimed, "the beating must cease! The fifth young master has fainted!"
"How many strikes?" the old lady inquired, her voice quivering intensely.
"Th-thirty," Nurse Zhang stammered.
"Douse him with water and continue," Old Madam Zhang commanded sternly.
"Grandmother, please no more," Wu Jingyun pleaded, kneeling and clutching the hem of the old lady's robe, tears streaming down her face. She truly realized her error this time. Having grown up with the fifth young master, she held no romantic feelings for him but regarded him as her own brother. Seeing him beaten to unconsciousness tore at her heart.
Old Madam Zhang looked down at her. "You've committed many wrongs before, and both the Lady Marquis and Lord Xiao showed mercy, not holding you accountable. That's why you've never felt the pain. Now you understand, don't you?"
"Continue the punishment," Old Madam Zhang ordered again.
"Grandmother," Wu Jingyun cried again, but the old lady remained unmoved. Turning to Tang Shuyi, Wu Jingyun approached and knelt before her, "Lady Marquis, I beg you..."
"Silence!" Old Madam Zhang reprimanded sharply. Wu Jingyun, kneeling before Tang Shuyi, wept without uttering another plea for mercy.
The sound of the paddle striking flesh resonated from outside. Tang Shuyi, looking down at Wu Jingyun kneeling before her, sighed, "Miss Wu, your grandmother is right. Pain felt in the flesh and heart brings true understanding. Let's not discuss your grievances with your stepmother and stepsister. When you drugged your stepsister and Abbot Changjing, did you consider the consequences for the women of your Wu family if your actions were exposed? Your stepmother and stepsister may have wronged you, but have your kinswomen? If they are disgraced, abandoned, or unable to marry because of this, shouldn't they seek revenge upon you? The affair between your stepsister and Abbot Changjing was your doing. How will you bear the consequences once it's known? You lost your mother at a young age, and your grandmother has taught you much. Many in the capital are aware. If this comes to light, might they say your grandmother failed in your upbringing, that the daughters of the Zhang family lack proper manners?"
Wu Jingyun knelt, weeping, as the sounds of punishment continued outside, blending into a mournful symphony. Yet Tang Shuyi remained unmoved; misdeeds warranted retribution.
Old Madam Zhang's voice then rose, "It is indeed my failure in guidance. Tomorrow, I'll take her to the country estate to live for two years before she returns."
"Grandmother," Wu Jingyun cried out, then collapsed, weeping inconsolably on the ground.
Old Madam Zhang, in her sixties, faced harsh conditions at the country estate. Yet Tang Shuyi offered no objection. This was the old lady's decision, a sacrifice for her granddaughter.
The sounds of punishment ceased outside. Moments later, the fifth young master, his garments stained with blood and barely clinging to life, was carried in. Wu Jingyun rushed to his side, gripping his arm and weeping heart-wrenchingly.
The fifth young master slowly opened his eyes, mustering a smile. With all his strength, he whispered, "Cousin, if I break off my engagement with Miss Zhao, would you marry me?"
Wu Jingyun, unsure how to respond, was still haunted by Tang Shuyi's words about the peril she had almost brought upon the women of the Wu family.
Seeing her hesitation, the fifth young master seemed to guess her thoughts and added, "If I break the engagement, I will have wronged Miss Zhao. I'll let her stab me as penance."
Upon hearing this, Tang Shuyi nearly laughed aloud. Miss Zhang was indeed unlucky to be betrothed to him. But she should be grateful for his willingness to break the engagement.
This translation aims to convey the dramatic and emotional nuances of the original text while preserving the cultural context and hierarchical relationships characteristic of the setting.
Unable to bear witnessing any further, Tang Shuyi rose to her feet and addressed the elder lady Zhang, "Madam Zhang, we shall take our leave now."
Xiao Yuchen followed suit, standing up as well.
Elder Lady Zhang also got to her feet, "Marchioness, I truly apologize for all the inconvenience caused to you and the young master."
"I just hope such incidents don't recur," Tang Shuyi remarked, unable to speak harshly upon seeing the tired, aged face of Elder Lady Zhang.
"I shall discipline them more strictly," Elder Lady Zhang affirmed, casting a firm glance at Wu Jingyun.
"Very well, we bid you farewell," Tang Shuyi said, moving to Xiao Yuchen's side, offering him support with her hand.
"Mother, I'm alright," Xiao Yuchen remarked, glancing at the stretcher-bound Zhang Wugongzi and the kneeling, weeping Wu Jingyun, a complex emotion stirring within him.
Today, witnessing the ordeal of Zhang Wugongzi and Wu Jingyun from a bystander's perspective, he found Zhang Wugongzi's actions to frame him for Wu Jingyun's sake, leading to this day's events, not only unworthy but outright foolish. He wondered, did others perceive him just as foolish?
Meanwhile, a commotion erupted outside, followed by a woman in her thirties or forties, bursting through the curtains. Upon seeing Zhang Wugongzi on the stretcher, she rushed over, crouched down, and burst into tears, exclaiming, "You misfortune bringer!"
"Aunt," Wu Jingyun cried out with tears streaming down her face, but before she could finish, the lady slapped her fiercely, saying, "I've treated you as my own daughter all your life, is this how you repay me?"
"Aunt, it's all my fault," Wu Jingyun sobbed.
"Of course it's your fault. Let me tell you, to become my daughter-in-law, it would be over my dead body," the lady seethed with venomous hatred.
Tang Shuyi, not wanting to get involved in others' family affairs, bid farewell to Elder Lady Zhang and left the hall with Xiao Yuchen. Outside, the sedan chair was ready, and Changming rushed to Xiao Yuchen's side, his face etched with concern. Xiao Yuchen reassured him, "I'm fine."
"Let's go."
Tang Shuyi also boarded the sedan, and the mother and son reached the Zhang family's gate, where the Marquis's carriage awaited. Tang Shuyi placed a cushion beside Xiao Yuchen, urging him to rest against it. Xiao Yuchen leaned against the carriage wall and looked at Tang Shuyi, "Mother, do you think I'm as foolish as Zhang Wugongzi?"
"No," Tang Shuyi replied, "You're even more foolish than he is."
Xiao Yuchen: "…"
Tang Shuyi continued, "Zhang Wugongzi betrayed you, and once exposed, at worst he got beaten. But the things you've done, if exposed, you know the consequences without me saying them."
Xiao Yuchen lowered his head, realizing he hadn't thought things through before; perhaps he had, but believed his family could smooth things over for him.
Tang Shuyi went on, "Although Wu Jingyun doesn't harbor romantic feelings for Zhang Wugongzi, she has sibling-like affection for him. She probably never intended to harm him. But what about Li Biqin?"
"She..."
"Listen to me," Tang Shuyi interrupted him, continuing, "If she truly harbored deep affection for you, she should consider your wellbeing. She shouldn't expose you to risks or strain your relations with your family because of her. But what has she done? She knows well that if she were to leave, you wouldn't be implicated. Yet, she chose to stay in the capital, living in luxury at your expense. She's aware that I didn't want her to enter our Marquis Mansion, but she's set her mind on getting in."
"She..."
Xiao Yuchen wanted to defend her but found that anything he said would seem pale in comparison.
Chapter 78: Which accomplished person would indulge in love?
Mother and son returned to the Marquis Mansion in silence. Xiao Yuchen was injured, and although Tang Shuyi was angry with him, she was also worried about his health and accompanied him to Qingfeng Garden.
"Mother, I'm fine. Please, go rest," Xiao Yuchen said, though his eyes betrayed the warmth he felt from her concern.
Tang Shuyi couldn't help but laugh, "It's been a long time since I've visited your courtyard. Let's go have a look."
Xiao Yuchen nodded, feeling that his injuries were not as painful anymore.
The mother and son traveled by sedan to Qingfeng Garden. As soon as they entered, a beautiful maid approached them. Seeing the blood on Xiao Yuchen, she rushed over, her eyes filling with tears in an instant, "Young Master, what happened to you? How did you get so injured?"
She was both worried and heartbroken, seeing no one but Xiao Yuchen—even Tang Shuyi, the Lady of the Marquis, was no exception. The other servants in the courtyard paid their respects to Tang Shuyi, while Ziling remained by Xiao Yuchen's side, crying.
"Ziling," Changfeng softly called out her name and gestured to her to pay respects to the Lady of the Marquis, but Ziling was solely focused on Xiao Yuchen and didn't hear him, nor did she see his gesture.
"Ziling, where are your manners?" Xiao Yuchen spoke up then, prompting Ziling to realize the Lady of the Marquis was present. She quickly knelt down, "My Lady, this servant has erred."
Tang Shuyi glanced at her indifferently, not uttering a word, and went straight into the house. Changming assisted Xiao Yuchen in following closely behind, and Changfeng glanced at Ziling, wanting to say something but ultimately remained silent, following them inside. Ziling knelt there, motionless.
Without a word from Tang Shuyi, she didn't dare to rise.
Xiao Yuchen went to clean up and change his clothes while Tang Shuyi ordered someone to fetch the physician for another check-up. She then sat down to drink tea, her mind occupied with the conditions of the servants in Xiao Yuchen's courtyard.
As the young master, naturally, he had no shortage of servants. There were attendants, maids, and laborers, totaling over thirty, but only four served him closely: two attendants and two personal maids.
There was no need to mention Xiao Yuchen's two attendants; Tang Shuyi often saw them, as he would take them wherever he went, including to Shi'an Garden.
Of his two personal maids, one was Ziling, who was kneeling outside, and the other was named Ziyue. Ziyue was matched with a steward's son a few months ago, and after getting married, she naturally wouldn't continue to serve. Thus, only Ziling remained as the personal maid.
The original owner of the body had intended to pick another personal maid for Xiao Yuchen, but it was delayed by other matters, and then she found herself transmigrated into this world.
Tang Shuyi was uncertain about the nature of Xiao Yuchen's relationship with Ziling. In ancient times, it was common for noble young masters to treat their personal maids as concubines. She had always believed that Xiao Yuchen, who was devoted to his 'Qin sister', would not become involved with other women.
However, after hearing his disgraceful words today, she realized that she had underestimated the deeply ingrained mindset of ancient men regarding polygamy. Even if they had a deeply beloved partner, they were still capable of relations with other women.
As a woman who had lived in the modern era for over thirty years, she might not accept this, but she was powerless to change it. But as for Ziling...
Lost in thought, she was brought back to reality when Xiao Yuchen emerged, dressed in fresh clothes. Though still somewhat pale, his spirits seemed lifted. Shortly after, the doctor arrived to examine him, declaring that while the wound was serious, it posed no grave threat and would heal with proper rest.
The doctor prescribed a remedy and departed. Tang Shuyi then said to Xiao Yuchen, "Yesterday, I met with your grandfather, who mentioned he would take you to visit the renowned scholar Fang in a few days. We shall wait for your recovery before making the visit."
A touch of gratitude appeared in Xiao Yuchen's eyes. "I shall dedicate myself to studious endeavor in the coming days."
Xiao Yuchen hadn't expected that not only had Tang Shuyi resolved his reputation crisis at Shanglin Academy, but she had also secured him a tutoring opportunity with the great scholar Fang.
"You're injured, don't overexert yourself," Tang Shuyi advised. "You've said before that learning should be applied. The knowledge you acquire isn't just for passing examinations or composing poetry; it's to be used in your future political career, whether in strategy or civil governance. Consider how you can apply what you've learned."
Xiao Yuchen nodded earnestly.
Tang Shuyi continued, "If you truly manage to apply your knowledge, then the essays in the imperial examination should pose no difficulty."
Xiao Yuchen felt enlightened and nodded again with determination, "I understand, Mother."
Tang Shuyi hummed in acknowledgment, then added, "Regarding Ziling..."
"She disrespected Mother; I leave her punishment to you," Xiao Yuchen said without hesitation.
Tang Shuyi turned to look at him, searching his face for any sign of a past liaison with Ziling. Yet, nothing was apparent. Guilt only shows itself in the guilty, and even if Xiao Yuchen had been involved with Ziling, he wouldn't feel guilty, believing such actions to be his prerogative.
"Have you ever... ever with that Ziling..." Tang Shuyi couldn't bring herself to finish the question, but Xiao Yuchen instantly understood.
His face flushed red as he hurriedly replied, "No, I'm in mourning; how could I engage in such acts during this period?"
Tang Shuyi realized her oversight; in ancient times, mourning prohibited marital relations for three years, which naturally included relations with maids. She coughed slightly and said, "I overthought."
"Today's incident, where I allowed Miss Wu to harm you, wasn't just to vent her anger. True pain makes one realize the gravity of their mistakes," Tang Shuyi looked at Xiao Yuchen earnestly and continued:
"In matters of love between men and women, if both parties truly share mutual affection and promote each other's growth, it's indeed a blessing. However, if one party acts selfishly under the guise of affection, the relationship is doomed to fail.
You, well-versed in literature, must know of emperors in history who, blinded by love for a woman, led dissolute lives and faced dire consequences. Similarly, history recounts women of virtue who significantly benefited their partners. So, what of the women by your side?"
Tang Shuyi rose to her feet, her voice steady, "Reflect on this yourself. Throughout history, which accomplished individual has ever been lost in the throes of passion?"
As she walked away, Xiao Yuchen clenched his fist and rose to see her out. Tang Shuyi waved him off, cautioning him against the cold outside, but Xiao Yuchen insisted on escorting her to the door. Outside, Ziling was still kneeling, her face now a ghastly shade of bluish-purple from the cold.
"Rise," Tang Shuyi said indifferently, striding away. Cuicloud approached, offering the sedan chair for the return journey, but Tang Shuyi declined. "Relying on a sedan for such a short distance won't do my health any favors."
Back in Qingfeng Garden, Xiao Yuchen regarded Ziling, who was kneeling on the ground, clutching at his robe and sobbing softly. His voice was flat, "You need not attend to me any longer."
PS: There was something at home today, so the upload is a bit late, sorry.
Chapter 79: I Can't Even Believe Myself
Upon hearing Xiao Yuchen's words, Ziling's tears fell even harder. She cried, "Young Master, when I saw you covered in blood, how could I think of anything else? Young Master, everything I did was for you, wu wu wu..."
Ziling's sobs rendered her speechless. Xiao Yuchen was unmoved, but his mind flashed back to the scene at the Zhangs'—Zhang Wu lying bloodied on a stretcher and Wu Jingyun kneeling beside him in tears—and Tang Shuyi's recent words.
Indeed, throughout history, how many who achieved greatness were ever ensnared by love? None, not a single one.
He had never considered himself lost in love before; he had only thought that his Qimei needed his help due to her unfortunate fate. But now, reflecting on his actions, in the eyes of others, wasn't he just a fool preoccupied with romantic trifles?
The more he pondered, the colder he felt. The wound on his shoulder throbbed painfully, and he couldn't help but smile bitterly. His mother was right—only when the pain was real did one truly remember their mistakes.
Looking down at Ziling, still weeping, he added, "You have served me for years, and we share a bond. If you have any requests, feel free to ask. But from now on, you need not attend to me."
"Young Master!" Ziling cried out in agony, never expecting such an outcome. Wasn't she assigned to serve the Young Master precisely to be his concubine?
But Xiao Yuchen ignored her pleas, saying, "Once you've decided on a request, let me know."
With that, he strode back to his room, leaving Ziling wailing on the ground.
"Actually, this might be for the best," Changfeng crouched down and whispered to Ziling, "Isn't it better to marry someone like Zi Yue than to be a concubine to the Young Master?"
Ziling looked up, her face twisted in sorrow, "How could you understand my feelings for the Young Master?"
Changfeng laughed self-deprecatingly, "Ah, now I understand."
With those words, he stood up and walked away, echoing Changming's words. This was someone desperate to climb high, and how could someone like him ever hold on?
…
At Shian Garden, Tang Shuyi saw from a distance Xiaoyu Ming's attendant, Shimo, waiting at the courtyard entrance. As he caught sight of her, Shimo hurriedly bowed in respect. Tang Shuyi paused and looked at him, "What message does your master have for me?"
"Madam, the Second Young Master has had an epiphany," Shimo said with a bow, a smile adorning his face. Observing his demeanor, Tang Shuyi thought to herself that indeed, the servant is a reflection of his master.
"If he has indeed had such clarity, let him come and explain it to me himself," Tang Shuyi said.
Upon hearing this, Shimo's face lit up with surprise, and then he bowed to Tang Shuyi, "I shall inform the Second Young Master immediately."
He scurried off towards the ancestral hall, and Tang Shuyi, watching his retreating figure, couldn't help but laugh. She had barely sat down inside when Steward Zhao arrived, reporting the morning's events at the court: "The Imperial Censor Li has submitted a memorandum against Minister Wu, accusing him of condoning his family's involvement in private lending. Upon hearing this, the Emperor remarked that someone who cannot manage his own household is likely to perform poorly in official duties, and thus ordered him to reflect at home for two months."
Upon hearing this, Tang Shuyi sneered, "A man who only knows how to muddle through, of course, is incapable of handling his duties properly."
Steward Zhao added, "It's said that this was a critical time for his promotion, but now he surely has no chance."
Tang Shuyi sneered again, "A person like him would only be a curse to the common people even if promoted."
Wu Jingyun's extreme character was largely the fault of Wu Guoliang. However, that was someone else's family affair, and she could only sigh in response. After Steward Zhao had finished reporting, he left, and not long after, Xiaoyu Ming was helped in by his attendants, limping along.
"Mother, I'm hungry."
Tang Shuyi: "..."
Really speechless, does he feel hungry every time he sees his mother? Although she thought this way, Tang Shuyi still asked Cuicloud to prepare something for him to eat.
"Since you've had your epiphany, tell me about it," Tang Shuyi asked.
Xiaoyu Ming straightened up and after pondering for a moment said, "I'm not cut out for academia, so it's just as well I don't go back to the academy. From now on, I will focus on martial arts training."
Tang Shuyi: "...That's it?"
Such a simple self-reflection.
But Xiaoyu Ming didn't see it that way and said with conviction, "That's what I've decided."
Observing his assertive demeanor and the cunning in his eyes, Tang Shuyi suddenly laughed. This little rascal thought he could play mind games with her? He was only setting himself up for trouble!
Sipping her tea delicately, she then said, "Hmm, I also think practicing martial arts at home is a good idea."
Xiaoyu Ming nodded in agreement. Before, he had to practice martial arts morning and evening, and spend the rest of his time at the academy. Now that he didn't have to attend the academy, didn't that mean more time to play?
Despite his thoughts, not a trace showed on his face. Instead, he spoke earnestly, "Mother, I will certainly train diligently."
Tang Shuyi replied with equal seriousness, "Mother believes in you. Later, discuss with Master Niu and draft a training schedule."
Xiao Yuming was momentarily perplexed, "What kind of schedule?"
Tang Shuyi elaborated, "If you're to focus on training at home, it's necessary to establish a routine. For instance, what time to rise in the morning to start training, when to take breaks, how many hours to train in the morning and afternoon, what content to cover, and what kind of progress to expect over a certain period. I'm not knowledgeable about these matters, so discuss them with Master Niu. Once you've drawn up the plan, show it to me."
Having said that, she looked at Xiao Yuming and sighed, the very picture of a mother watching her child come of age, "It truly comforts me that you've thought things through. Just yesterday, your grandfather mentioned the possibility of sending you to the imperial guard or the suburban camps, foreseeing a promising future. I believe that my son, being so smart and diligent, will certainly excel if he tries his best.
"In time, we'll present you to General Xiang. Seeing how outstanding my son is, he'll surely take a liking to you. Later on, by learning and gaining experience under General Xiang's guidance, my son might even surpass your father and General Xiang..."
"Mother!" Xiao Yuming hastily exclaimed, interrupting Tang Shuyi; he couldn't let her continue, for he feared he might never live up to her expectations, even if he gave it his all.
"What's the matter?" Tang Shuyi asked with feigned ignorance.
"Just...just that things need to be done step by step," Xiao Yuming managed to articulate after racking his brains.
"Oh, right, mother was getting ahead of herself," Tang Shuyi said. "Let's take it one step at a time. Later, you and Master Niu draft that schedule. Don't push yourself too hard; it's important to balance work and rest. Mother believes in you."
Xiao Yuming's face turned bitter: I don't even believe in myself.
PS: Xiao Yuming: What should I do if my mother believes in me too much? Urgently waiting online!
Chapter 80: The Youngster Can't Play This Game
Tang Shuyi chose to ignore the look of distress on Xiao Yuming's face. She now understood that he did possess some ambition, but like many young people, he struggled with consistency in pursuing his goals.
Young people have their dreams, and thinking of them can be exhilarating. But realizing dreams requires self-discipline and the resilience to face and overcome challenges. With these two qualities, one can generally achieve their dreams.
Yet, in reality, few possess these qualities, and consequently, few achieve fame and success.
Tang Shuyi's current objective was to have Xiao Yuming create a plan to reach his goals and then supervise him in executing each step. She wasn't sure if this was the right way to guide a child, but it was how she used to manage her employees.
Soon, Cuiyun brought over a large bowl of noodles, saying, "Preparing other dishes would take time, so I asked the kitchen to make chicken noodle soup since it's quicker."
"Alright, bring it here," Xiao Yuming was not picky; he could eat anything when hungry. He tucked into the bowl, larger than his face, with great gusto. His eating manner might not have been graceful, but it was certainly compelling, making even Tang Shuyi feel hungry.
"Let's have hotpot for dinner," Tang Shuyi suggested, her mouth watering at the thought of the steaming dish.
Upon hearing the mention of a hotpot meal, Xiao Yuming's eyes lit up. "Great, great, hotpot it is!"
Tang Shuyi glanced at his knees and thought about Xiao Yuxin's injuries, her eyes narrowing into a smile, "Alright then, we'll have hotpot."
She then instructed Cui Zhu, "Go tell our eldest young master that we'll have hotpot for dinner."
"Alright," Cui Zhu acknowledged and left. Xiao Yuming quickly finished the noodles in his bowl, accepted the napkin handed to him by the maid to wipe his mouth, and then rinsed with some water she offered.
Seeing that he was done, Tang Shuyi suggested, "Call over Master Niu. While you work on the schedule, I'd like to listen in and learn a thing or two."
Xiao Yuming grimaced, but knowing Tang Shuyi's casual words were not to be defied, he reluctantly agreed. Tang Shuyi ordered someone to invite Master Niu from the front courtyard, and he arrived shortly after.
Tang Shuyi repeated her request for him to create a schedule with Xiao Yuming. Master Niu responded, "Madam means a schedule similar to that used for training soldiers in the army?"
Having previously served in the military, and even holding the rank of Major, he was quite familiar with such matters.
"Something like that," Tang Shuyi confirmed. "How is training conducted in the army?"
Master Niu Hongliang replied, "We begin assembling at the third quarter of the Mao hour, start with some stretching and warm-up exercises, then proceed to combat or wrestling training..."
Listening, Tang Shuyi found the training to be overly simplistic. Although she had never served in the military, she had watched many military-themed movies and TV shows in her previous life. However, she had no intention of meddling. After all, what she had seen of soldier training was merely superficial, and the ancient military had its own systems. Not being a professional herself, it was best to keep her opinions to herself.
"You could structure the schedule progressively, keeping in mind that Yuming is different from the seasoned soldiers in the army. Also, it should specify what outcomes should be achieved by when," Tang Shuyi proposed. She was eager for Xiao Yuming to succeed but knew better than to rush his growth.
"This humble one understands," Master Niu Hongliang bowed to Tang Shuyi and went to discuss the training schedule with Xiao Yuming. Xiao Yuming's face was a picture of misery, but Tang Shuyi pretended not to notice, instead offering him an encouraging look that said, 'I believe in you, you're the best.'
Xiao Yuming: "..."
What could he do but bite the bullet and work with Master Niu Hongliang on the training schedule?
Master Niu Hongliang was experienced, and it didn't take long for the two to draft the schedule. Tang Shuyi scrutinized the two sheets of paper carefully before admitting, "I don't really understand all this, but if it seems right to you, it's fine by me."
Then she turned to Xiao Yuming and pointing to the first goal on the schedule, she asked, "What reward would you like upon achieving this?"
Xiao Yuming, who had been somewhat listless, perked up at the mention of a reward and immediately responded, "I want a warhorse from beyond the frontier."
Tang Shuyi wasn't very knowledgeable about horses and looked towards Master Niu Hongliang, who explained, "Horses are categorized as ordinary mounts, the kind we commonly see, and warhorses, which are used in battle. Warhorses vary depending on their region of origin, and those from beyond the frontier are among the finest."
Wow! Be it the scion of a marquis or an average Joe, the casually stated reward was equivalent to a luxury car.
Tang Shuyi didn't immediately refuse; she fell silent for a moment, then pointed to the fourth target in the schedule, saying, "Reach this target, and you'll be rewarded with a horse from beyond the Great Wall."
Xiao Yuming glanced down at the target, his lips pressed tight, silent. Seeing this, Tang Shuyi said, "You see, if you strive, there's a possibility of success. Without effort, failure is certain. My son wouldn't be afraid to even try, would he?"
There was incredulity in her tone, and Xiao Yuming, however astute and scheming, was after all a hot-blooded youth of fourteen or fifteen, unable to withstand such provocation. He snorted and said, "That's easy."
"Good." Tang Shuyi clapped her hands in delight and added, "I'll start inquiring tomorrow about how to acquire a horse from beyond the Great Wall. No matter the difficulty, I'll get one for you."
Her words made it seem as if Xiao Yuming was bound to achieve that target.
Xiao Yuming knew he had been tricked, but it was too late to back out now. He couldn't possibly admit he felt the target was unattainable. That would be too embarrassing.
At that moment, Tang Shuyi added, "You've injured your knee; rest for a couple of days. Start once you've recovered."
She wore the tender expression of a doting mother.
Niu Hongliang was truly astounded. The lady of the marquis was quite adept at this. Glancing at Xiao Yuming, who was set up high and couldn't back down, he said to Tang Shuyi, "If there's nothing else, I'll take my leave."
Tang Shuyi smiled and agreed, and Niu Hongliang gave Xiao Yuming another look before departing, thinking to himself that experience indeed comes with age, and the young can't outsmart the old.
Not long after, Xiao Yuzhu returned from her studies, and Tang Shuyi told her they'd be having hot pot for dinner. The little girl was delighted. For a family of their stature, having hot pot was a trivial matter, but the warm atmosphere of the family gathering around the hot pot was truly heartening.
A quarter of an hour before dinner, Xiao Yuchen arrived. Tang Shuyi had the hot pot served; the family of four was about to start their meal around the steaming pot when suddenly, Tang Shuyi exclaimed, "Ah, I forgot! It's not advisable for those with injuries to have hot pot; it's detrimental to the healing process."
Xiao Yuming: "…"
Xiao Yuchen: "…"
Then why invite them to join? Was it just to make them watch?
At this moment, their mother said tenderly, "Both of you are injured, so let's skip the hot pot tonight. I'll have the kitchen prepare something light for you."
Saying so, she gestured for Cuicui to come over, "Go to the kitchen and ask them to prepare some bland food, the blander the better."
Cuicui responded with a smile and left. A quarter of an hour later, Xiao Yuchen and Xiao Yuming ate their bland meal without a hint of flavor, watching Tang Shuyi and Xiao Yuzhu enjoying their hot pot with gusto…
