Chapter 81: Is This Still His Pedantic Big Brother?
Xiao Yuchen and Xiao Yuming had a dinner that was both frustrating and delightful. Frustrating because they could look but not eat; delightful because they watched Tang Shuyi and Xiao Yuzhu eat with joy.
Before leaving the Shi'an Garden, Tang Shuyi reminded them to take good care of their injuries, suggesting that they would soon be able to enjoy hotpot again, as if they were particularly fond of it.
The brothers left with mixed feelings, while Tang Shuyi cheerfully took Xiao Yuzhu for a digestive stroll in the yard.
"Big brother and second brother seemed upset," Xiao Yuzhu commented with a laugh.
"Thinking they can still enjoy the good life after making mistakes? That's wishful thinking," Tang Shuyi retorted.
Xiao Yuzhu nodded in agreement, smiling.
After a few laps around the yard, it was time to rest. They returned to their rooms to wash up. Tang Shuyi lay in bed, hoping her sons would stay out of trouble for a while since they were injured. However, the very next day, she was confronted with new troubles - the investigation into the person associated with Princess Changping had yielded results.
"The man's name is Kong Wenzhe, born to the Kong family of the Yitong tea merchants, the seventh son of the current head of the family, born to a concubine," reported Steward Zhao. "Half a year ago, he was presented to Princess Changping, and since then, the Kong family has been elevated to imperial merchants."
Frowning, Tang Shuyi asked, "Does our marquis's residence have any feud with the Kong family?"
Steward Zhao shook his head. "There's no enmity between our residence and either the Kong family or Kong Wenzhe. He acted on someone else's orders."
"Whose orders?" inquired Tang Shuyi.
"Liang Jian'an," replied Zhao.
Just as she suspected!
Tang Shuyi had previously guessed that the Liang family was likely involved, given the heavy loss they suffered last time. But how had this illegitimate son of the Kong family become entangled with the Liangs?
Steward Zhao provided the answer. "Kong Wenzhe's maternal aunt has a sister whose daughter is a favored concubine of Liang Jian'an."
This sounded convoluted. Tang Shuyi clarified, "So, Kong Wenzhe's cousin or niece is Liang Jian'an's concubine."
"You could say that, but in major clans, relationships with the maternal families of concubines are not officially acknowledged," explained Steward Zhao.
Official recognition was one thing, but private relations were another. Having a powerful maternal family could be a significant advantage for a concubine.
Tang Shuyi fell silent for a moment before asking Zhao, "Have you informed Yuzhen?"
Zhao nodded. "Someone has already reported it to the eldest young master."
Tang Shuyi acknowledged this with a hum, gesturing for Zhao to leave. At this moment, Xiao Yuming, who had been sitting quietly by the side, clenched his teeth and said, "Mother, why don't we just kill Liang Jian'an?"
He felt that killing the Second Prince might lead to severe consequences, but if it were Liang Jian'an, the repercussions would probably not be significant.
Tang Shuyi, however, was somewhat speechless, wondering why there was always a quick jump to thoughts of murder. Watching Xiao Yuming's face seething with killing intent, she said, "Murder doesn't solve problems."
"Then what do you plan to do, Mother?" Xiao Yuming asked.
Tang Shuyi lowered her gaze and pondered for a moment before leaning in and whispering, "I have a plan, but I'm not sure yet if it can be implemented. Don't act rashly, and don't let your elder brother act rashly either. Moreover, he mustn't know about my plan."
Xiao Yuming was taken aback. "Why can't elder brother know?"
After all, this matter was directly related to him.
"I can't tell you for now," Tang Shuyi whispered again, "You focus on healing. If my plan goes into action, I'll need your strength."
Xiao Yuming's eyes brightened, and he whispered back, "Understood. These next few days, I'll make sure to watch over elder brother and prevent him from making any moves."
Tang Shuyi hummed in response, "You're injured, go back and rest well. Don't stay here with me."
Xiao Yuming, excited about receiving his first task from Tang Shuyi, obediently departed. After he left, Tang Shuyi instructed Cuicloud, "Arrange for someone to notify Guanyougen in the western mountain villa, and have him go to Chongguang Temple to offer prayers a day later."
Cuicloud immediately went to carry out the orders, and Tang Shuyi said to Cuizhu, "Prepare, we'll go to Chongguang Temple to offer prayers the day after tomorrow."
"Understood."
After Cuizhu left with a response, only Tang Shuyi remained in the room. She leaned back on the brocade couch and closed her eyes to rest, contemplating her plan to kill two birds with one stone. Its success hinged on how deeply Liubiqin felt for Xiao Yuchen.
However, Tang Shuyi felt that the chances of her plan succeeding were high.
In the Qingfeng Pavilion, Xiao Yuchen had already found out that it was Liang Jian'an who had instigated Kong Wenzhe. The veins on his clenched fists seemed to pulsate angrily. An inner voice kept howling, urging him to kill them, to kill Liang Jian'an.
This fury reached its zenith, causing a momentary dizziness in his brain. But, it was during this dizzy spell that he suddenly calmed down. He remembered what Tang Shuyi had told him: that a person's actions are always driven by emotions, and those who are, are doomed to fail.
The wound on his shoulder throbbed painfully, bringing him to complete sobriety. Just then, Xiao Yuming limped in.
Seeing him, Xiao Yuchen asked, "You heard?"
"Yeah, I just ran into Steward Zhao," Xiao Yuming lied smoothly.
Xiao Yuchen didn't suspect him and added, "Mother must know by now too."
Xiao Yuming remained silent, and Xiao Yuchen added, "We can't keep expecting mother to solve every problem that arises."
"What are your thoughts?" Xiao Yuming asked softly.
Xiao Yuchen shook his head, then bowed his head in silence. After a while, he looked at Xiao Yuming seriously and said, "Fight fire with fire."
Xiao Yuming, stunned for a moment by his words, said, "You want Liang Jian'an to become a chief consort to Princess Changping? Although he's not bad-looking, he's too old, and he doesn't possess Minister Qi's kind of charisma."
Xiao Yuchen gave him a sideways glance, "I'm well aware that Princess Changping wouldn't fancy him."
Puzzled, Xiao Yuming asked, "Then how do you plan to fight fire with fire?"
"Liang Jian'an schemed against me simply to disgrace me and our household. I'll make sure he suffers a great humiliation in return," Xiao Yuchen said through gritted teeth.
"What do you plan to do?" Xiao Yuming asked further.
Xiao Yuchen leaned in closer and whispered, "What if Liang Jian'an and that Kong Wenzhe were caught in the act?"
Xiao Yuming's mouth fell open. He hadn't expected Xiao Yuchen to come up with such an idea. Was this really his old-fashioned elder brother?
Xiao Yuchen continued, "Competing with Princess Changping for a chief consort, she surely won't be pleased. Besides, when the scandal about his homosexuality spreads, especially involving his concubine's cousin, even the Second Prince's reputation will be nearly ruined."
Xiao Yuming frowned, feeling that his brother's method was satisfyingly effective, but what should he do?
Chapter 82: It's Great to Have a Plan
Although Xiao Yuming thought Xiao Yuchen's plan was brilliantly wicked, he still said, "The plan is good and certainly satisfying, but I think it's better to have a foolproof strategy. If it gets exposed, remember Liang Jian'an has the Empress Dowager behind him."
Xiao Yuchen nodded earnestly, "I know, we'll act only when there's no chance of failure."
"Brother," Xiao Yuming slung an arm around Xiao Yuchen's shoulders in a chummy manner, "Let me know once you have a detailed plan, I'll help you refine it."
Refining the plan was just a pretext; creating mischief was the real intent.
"Alright, I'll discuss the detailed plan with you once it's ready," Xiao Yuchen earnestly promised.
Xiao Yuming patted his shoulder, "When brothers unite, their strength can cut through metal."
Xiao Yuchen was moved and said, "Thank you, second brother."
Xiao Yuming patted his shoulder again, then limped away. Duping his dear brother, he felt a twinge of guilt.
After dinner, Xiao Yuming took the opportunity to secretly share Xiao Yuzhen's plan with Tang Shuyi, adding, "Mother, when will your plan take action? Don't let my elder brother get ahead."
Tang Shuyi hadn't expected the seemingly honest Xiao Yuzhen to come up with such a cunning plan. But since the Liang family had started playing dirty, Xiao Yuzhen's scheme didn't seem so bad. Yet, she had more critical plans, and Xiao Yuzhen's clever yet underhanded strategy was doomed to fail.
She whispered to Xiao Yuming, "Stall him for a few days. I'll know whether my plan can proceed the day after tomorrow."
"Alright." Xiao Yuming nodded enthusiastically, his eyes sparkling. He loved getting involved in such affairs.
…
Soon it was time to visit Chongguang Temple. Tang Shuyi rose at dawn while it was still dark outside. She dressed simply, and the carriage was almost ready.
The weather had turned cold, so the carriage's cushions were replaced with fur, and even the carpets were doubled in thickness. Half an hour earlier, charcoal had been lit to ensure a warm welcome upon entering.
When Tang Shuyi lifted the carriage curtain, she indeed felt a warm, fragrant breeze that instantly dispelled the chill. Inside, she found hot tea and refreshments aplenty.
She couldn't help but marvel inwardly at the luxurious ancient life she enjoyed, despite the challenges of dealing with troublesome children. Every coin has two sides.
Leaning against the soft, padded walls of the carriage, she took a sip of the ginseng tea handed by Cui Zhu and thought, "Comfort at its best!"
After warming up, Tang Shuyi and her maids Cui Zhu and Cui Yun chatted about the steward of their Western Hill Manor, Guan Yougen's family. Unlike most stewards who are born into their roles, Guan Yougen was different. He was a childhood neighbor of Xiao Chengkun, the old Marquis.
Xiao Chengkun had gone to war and was rumored to have died on the battlefield a year later. Subsequently, during a year of famine, Xiao's family fled with their villagers and were never heard from again. Many believed the Xiao family perished.
It was said that Xiao Chengkun searched for his family for a long time but, grief-stricken, eventually had to accept that they were likely dead.
Tang Shuyi sighed, reflecting on these thoughts—a sigh for the cruel twists of fate.
By chance, Guan Yougen's father encountered Xiao Chengkun, and having grown up together, their bond was strong. By then, Xiao Chengkun was the Marquis of Yongning and wanted to uplift Guan's father. However, the old man insisted on farming, claiming that's all he knew.
Thus, the Guans took root at the Western Hill Manor. Aside from overseeing the manor for the Marquis, they also owned some land and lived a prosperous life.
Upon arrival at Chongguang Temple, the day had fully dawned. Tang Shuyi was settled in the same guest room as before, which was already warmed by charcoal, making it as pleasant as spring.
Shortly after settling in, an announcement came from outside: Guan Yougen had arrived with his wife and son to pay respects. Tang Shuyi promptly welcomed them inside.
Guan Yougen, in his thirties or forties, had a dark complexion and a tall, sturdy build, exuding an air of loyalty. Guan's wife was fair-skinned and pretty. Their son, Guan Yi, took after his mother in looks, handsome and scholarly. His attire, contrasting with his father's rustic farmer's clothes, was that of a learned man.
As soon as the Guans saw Tang Shuyi, they began to kneel in respect, but Tang Shuyi quickly bid them to rise, saying, "In my father's view, we are all fellow villagers. There's no need for such formality."
Hearing her words, Guan Yougen chuckled softly, and his wife's face flushed with gratitude as she thanked the marquise. Guan Yinyan, however, greeted Tang Shuyi with ease, saying, "Thank you, Lady Marquise."
Tang Shuyi gestured for them to sit and engaged in some light conversation. During the talk, Guan Yougen mentioned that Yinyan had recently passed the imperial examinations with a scholar's degree and was in search of a reputable mentor for further guidance. He voiced this request tentatively, unsure of Tang Shuyi's response.
Their family had some connection with the old marquis, and if Xiao Huai were still alive, he might have looked after them in the old marquis's honor. But they had no such bond with the marquise.
The marquise seated at the head of the room was smiling. She asked their son about his studies and daily pursuits. As the boy answered respectfully, the marquise's smile grew warmer, and Guan Yougen and his wife seemed to stand a little taller.
"My eldest son is also fond of his studies. Perhaps your son can join him in learning," Tang Shuyi suggested after speaking with Yinyan.
At this, Guan Yougen and his wife, overwhelmed with joy, knelt down despite Tang Shuyi's protests, and Yinyan also bowed deeply to the marquise.
They had heard that the marquis's son was preparing for the imperial exams and that his tutors were of the highest caliber. If Yinyan could study alongside the marquis's son, wouldn't he also benefit from such esteemed instruction?
Tang Shuyi smiled and urged them to rise. She had a favorable impression of the Guan family and, considering the old marquis's friendship, felt that helping them was only natural. Besides, with Yinyan already a scholar, should he advance to become an imperial scholar, he might well become an asset to the marquisate. It was a win-win situation.
After discussing Yinyan, Tang Shuyi steered the conversation to the matter at hand. "Is Miss Liu settling in well at the manor?"
Before their visit, the Guans had suspected that the marquise's interest in them might pertain to Liu Biqin, who had recently moved to the estate. Considering the matter concerned a lady, Guan Yougen and Yinyan remained silent, leaving it to Madam Guan to articulate:
"Miss Liu, accustomed to the life of a young lady from a distinguished family, naturally finds it difficult to adapt to the manor. Moreover, she and her maid have been inquiring about external affairs, seemingly harboring some intentions."
At this, Tang Shuyi chuckled. It was good that Liu had intentions; in fact, it was very good.
"Chapter 83: Empress Dowager Jia Shu."]
Tang Shuyi had anticipated Liu Biqin developing some schemes and wasn't surprised.
Love requires a material foundation and spiritual resonance between two people; both are indispensable. From luxury to hardship, Liu Biqin's drastic change in material circumstances and the difficulties of life could understandably lead her to question love.
And with such a prolonged inability to communicate and seek solace from Xiao Yuchen, it was only natural for her to start devising plans.
A smile played on Tang Shuyi's lips; if Liu Biqin "cooperated" with her, her plan would be halfway to success.
"Upon your return, ensure Miss Liu's provisions as usual. Do not mistreat her; on the contrary, flatter her into believing she deserves a life of luxury," Tang Shuyi instructed the Guans. "If she inquires about the marquisate or the young marquis, feign ignorance."
The Guans hastily agreed. Though they were unclear about the specifics regarding Liu Biqin, they had their suspicions. It likely involved the young marquis's affection, the marquise's disapproval, and the intent to separate the two.
As for the Marchioness, the eldest son, and Miss Liu, they wouldn't delve into who was right or wrong between them. After all, the Marchioness was now the head of the Marquis's household, and their duty was to follow her lead.
Once their business was concluded, the three members of the Guan family took their leave. Regarding when Guan Yi Nian would go to the Marquis's residence to study with Xiao Yu Chen, Tang Shuyi asked them to wait a while. She preferred to wait until Liu Bi Qin left the Xishan villa before discussing it further.
Undoubtedly, many eyes were now fixed on the Marquis's residence; they had to be cautious with every move.
After the Guan family left, Tang Shuyi stood up to offer incense at the temple's front courtyard. Just as she reached the courtyard's gate, she saw a grand procession approaching. Leading the entourage was a regal woman in her forties or fifties, escorted by a monk who seemed to be the abbot, followed by a host of eunuchs, maids, old nannies, and guards.
Such a procession could only belong to an empress.
Tang Shuyi didn't continue forward but stood aside at the gate, waiting for the procession to pass before proceeding. As the group drew closer, Tang Shuyi bowed deeply and greeted, "Peace be upon Her Highness, Empress Jiashu."
Indeed, this noble lady was Empress Jiashu, the consort of the late emperor and the biological mother of Prince Xiao.
Empress Jiashu halted her steps and glanced at Tang Shuyi, then inquired, "Are you the Lady of Yongning Marquis?"
"Yes, the wife of Yongning Marquis," Tang Shuyi responded.
Empress Jiashu stared at her for a moment, perplexed, then asked, "My lady, are you here to offer incense?"
Tang Shuyi nodded, "Yes."
Empress Jiashu fell silent for a moment, then sighed, "Offer more incense for them, it's a solace for us who are still alive."
The news of Xiao Huai and Prince Xiao's demise had reached the capital simultaneously. It seemed Empress Jiashu saw a kindred spirit in her sorrow. To this, Tang Shuyi could only agree.
At that moment, Empress Jiashu added, "You still have three children, raise them well. Life won't always be this hard."
Tang Shuyi, touched by the Empress's comforting words, replied, "We hope they are at peace, and they surely hope the same for us. Thus, we strive to live well, and I believe this would ease their concerns wherever they are."
Empress Jiashu smiled slightly, "You are right; we must indeed live well."
The last two words carried a weight of determination in her tone.
"Do visit the palace when you have the time," Empress Jiashu invited.
Tang Shuyi's lips curved slightly, "Yes, I would be honored, Your Highness."
This invitation was truly a wonderful gesture!
After exchanging a few more pleasantries, Tang Shuyi watched as Empress Jiashu's procession entered the courtyard before departing with her maids, Cui Zhu and Cui Yun, contemplating the appropriate time to visit the royal residence, considering the invitation extended by the Empress herself.
Ah, what a splendid day it is.
Meanwhile, Empress Jiashu entered the resting room, and the crowd of maids, eunuchs, and nannies dispersed, leaving only her closest nanny to attend to her.
"The Lady of Yongning Marquis seems in good spirits; it appears she has come to terms with her grief," Empress Jiashu remarked as she accepted a cup of tea from the nanny and took a sip.
The nanny moved a stool closer to Empress Jiashu and said, "A mother must be strong. The Lady of Yongning Marquis has three children; she cannot afford to wallow in sorrow indefinitely."
Then, looking at Empress Jiashu, she added, "The Lady of Yongning Marquis is right; your son surely wishes for your happiness too."
Empress Jiashu took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, then affirmed with resolve, "My son's death has not been avenged; I must live well for that cause."
The nanny sighed, wanting to offer some words of comfort, but unsure what to say. For now, the Empress clung to the notion of revenge as her reason to keep living.
…
Tang Shuyi offered incense in high spirits at the front courtyard, praying for her grandparents' peace and happiness in the afterlife and for a joyful future for "Tang Shuyi." This time, she also wished for Xiao Huai, hoping he too would find happiness in his next life.
After offering incense, she left Chongguang Temple and returned to Shi'an Garden, where she found Xiao Yuming waiting. Upon seeing her, he abruptly stood up, inadvertently pulling at the wound on his knee, causing him to grimace in pain.
Nevertheless, his eyes sparkled with excitement as he asked, "Mother, did everything go smoothly with your incense offering today?"
He suspected that Tang Shuyi's visit to Chongguang Temple was part of a larger plan.
Tang Shuyi took a seat next to the embroidered couch and gestured for the maids and nannies to leave the room, leaving only the mother and son. She then whispered her instructions to Xiao Yuming, who listened with even greater admiration.
"But what if Big Brother finds out?" Xiao Yuming asked.
Tang Shuyi sat up straight and said, "An abscess must be excised ruthlessly, or it will only fester and potentially be life-threatening. If he can't bring himself to do it, I'll do it for him."
Her voice was chillingly cold by the end, causing Xiao Yuming to shiver involuntarily.
"Can you handle the task I've assigned you?" Tang Shuyi inquired.
Xiao Yuming quickly reassured her, "Mother, rest assured, I will surely handle it well."
Tang Shuyi hummed in response, "We cannot let your elder brother know for now."
Xiao Yuming nodded earnestly, "I understand. There won't be any leaks from my end."
Tang Shuyi nodded in approval, "You better focus on healing."
"Mother, I can work despite my injuries," Xiao Yuming insisted with enthusiasm. Usually, such activities would be deemed frivolous and wasteful, but now it was a task assigned by the head of the family, which energized him.
Tang Shuyi wanted to say that she didn't condone working while injured, but seeing his eagerness, she let it be. After all, the sooner the matter was settled, the sooner they could be at ease.
Chapter 84: Without the Young Master Xiao, There Will Be Others
Limping, Xiao Yuming returned to his courtyard from Shi An Yuan. He reclined on a daybed, squinting as he contemplated how to proceed. After a while, he gestured for his inkstone to be brought over.
As the inkstone was placed beside him, Xiao Yuming said, "Inform Yan Wu and Qi Er that we'll go horse riding at the stables tomorrow."
The inkstone glanced at his injured knee and advised softly, "Second Young Master, you've just been punished, and your wound hasn't healed yet. Besides, Young Master Yan Wu and Qi Er might still be under punishment."
Xiao Yuming glared at him and kicked towards his rear, accidentally straining his injury in the process and grimacing in pain, "Quit your pointless babbling. Just go if I tell you to."
Having no other choice, the inkstone obediently set off to carry out the task, all the while grumbling about what would happen if the Marquis's wife found out. Overhearing this, Xiao Yuming pointed at his retreating figure, "Talk back one more time, and I'll have you reassigned to stoking fires."
The inkstone turned back and bowed, saying he understood his mistake, before setting off to complete his task. Such scenes were common, and nobody in the courtyard paid them much mind. They all knew that, despite being timid and somewhat foolish, the inkstone was the one whom the Second Young Master trusted the most.
Meanwhile, as the inkstone left the residence, he headed to the Marquis of Nanling's estate. Arriving at a corner of the western wall, he tossed a stone inside. Soon after, a servant's head popped out from behind the wall. Seeing the inkstone below, he asked, "Did your young master send you with a message?"
The inkstone nodded, and the servant sighed, "Our young master has been beaten and is bedridden."
The inkstone had expected as much but still relayed, "Our young master invites yours to go horse riding at the stables tomorrow."
"Oh, at such a time as this, horse riding?" The servant paused, then added, "Your Second Young Master wasn't punished?"
The inkstone honestly replied, "He was. He knelt in the ancestral hall all night."
"And he still wants to go horse riding?" The servant asked.
The inkstone, growing impatient, said, "Just pass on the message quickly."
The servant sighed again and left. After a short while, his head reappeared over the wall, "My young master said he will definitely be there tomorrow."
With the reply received, the inkstone turned and headed towards the Qi residence. He stopped by a hole near the courtyard wall, looked around to ensure no one was watching, and then deftly crawled through it.
After entering, he followed a small path to a courtyard and knocked on the door. Shortly after, the door opened, and upon seeing Yantai, the servant boy was startled and hastily pulled him inside. Then, in a hushed tone, he asked, "How did you get here?"
After Yantai explained his purpose, the servant boy's mouth fell open in astonishment, "Your young master wasn't punished?"
"He was, kneeling in the ancestral hall for a whole night. And your young master?" Yantai inquired.
The boy sighed, "He's hiding in the old lady's quarters."
That day, Qi Er was brought back to the residence from the academy by Qi Liangsheng. No sooner had he stepped off the carriage than he bolted towards Old Lady Qi's quarters, prompting Qi Liangsheng to urgently order his men to pursue. But Qi Er's skill in fleeing was unparalleled; a dozen or so servant boys failed to catch him, allowing him to dash into Old Lady Qi's courtyard.
Qi Liangsheng went personally to fetch him, only to be met with Old Lady Qi's wailing and tantrums, declaring she would take the punishment alongside her grandson. Qi Liangsheng dared not punish her and, in frustration, smashed a cup in Old Lady Qi's room.
And so, Qi Er remained in Old Lady Qi's quarters ever since.
"Our young master probably won't make it tomorrow," said the boy.
"Whether he goes or not, just pass on the message," Yantai replied before departing. He retraced his steps to the dog hole and clambered back out.
Upon returning to the Marquis of Yongning's residence and seeing Xiao Yuming, he recounted the events. Xiao Yuming affirmed confidently, "Wait and see, they'll definitely come tomorrow."
…
West Mountain Villa
Winter had set in, and the villagers were busy cutting firewood in the mountains to prepare for the cold season. On the muddy paths, everyone hurried along, their breaths forming white clouds whenever they paused to exchange pleasantries.
Liu Biqin huddled in a corner on the heated brick bed, wrapped in layers of blankets, her face etched with sorrow as she said to her maid Hong'er, "Go and ask Sister Guan if she has any charcoal. It's too cold."
Hong'er's face was red with cold as she replied, "I asked Sister Guan the day before yesterday, and she said they never use charcoal in the villa."
"No charcoal?" Liu Biqin exclaimed in shock. "How are we supposed to survive this winter without it? Are we expected to freeze to death?"
As she spoke, tears fell like pearls. A beauty is a beauty indeed; even without exquisite hairpins, she remained pitiable and lovely.
Hong'er's eyes also reddened. "Miss, we must think of something. We can't stay in this villa forever!"
Liu Biqin gently wiped her tears with a handkerchief. "Chen Gege should be coming to get me soon."
"Oh my dear miss, how can you still be so blind?" Hong'er sat on the edge of the bed and whispered, "If Young Master Xiao was going to come for you, why hasn't there been any word for such a long time? I think either the lady of the marquis has confined him to the residence, or he's been seduced by some temptress."
"No, Chen Gege wouldn't do that." Liu Biqin still had firm faith in Xiao Yuchen's feelings for her.
"The Heir, Xiao, has always had you in his heart, but what about Lady Hou?" Hong'er, the maid, recalled Lady Hou's imposing manner that night and still felt terribly nervous. She continued, "With Lady Hou being so domineering, even if you enter the Hou household, will your days be any easier?"
Liu Biqin also thought back to that night, Tang Shuyi's irrefutable demeanor. She pursed her lips tightly, a hint of sorrow in her voice: "What can I do? Now, only Brother Chen can help me."
"That's not necessarily true." Hong'er leaned in closer to Liu Biqin, her voice dropping lower: "With your grace and beauty, which man wouldn't cherish you? If not the Heir Xiao, there will be others."
Liu Biqin's cheeks flushed at her words, but beneath the quilt, her hands were tightly clasped together. In truth, she had been in constant fear since her father's downfall, even though Xiao Yuchen had rescued her and treated her as before, her anxiety had only deepened.
"How much money do we have left? If need be, we can buy some coal ourselves," Liu Biqin suggested, focusing on the immediate future.
But Hong'er replied, "Only a single silver tael is left."
Liu Biqin was shocked, "How can it be so little?"
Hong'er wore a troubled expression, "Miss, the rouge, powder, and food you asked me to buy earlier, they all cost money!"
Liu Biqin had been brought up in luxury, and even after her family's crisis, she hadn't spent many days in jail before being rescued by Xiao Yuchen. While living in Plum Blossom Alley, her lifestyle was even more lavish than before at home. Suddenly being moved to the countryside, she naturally spent the money she had, but how could a mere twenty silver taels last?
"Then ask Auntie Guan if there's any solution," Liu Biqin said, her grip tightening beneath the quilt, her nails digging into her flesh. She even began to resent Xiao Yuchen.
If he couldn't protect her properly, why did he bother rescuing her in the first place?
Chapter 85: Such Good Fortune
The Guan couple, though seemingly honest and straightforward, had their own calculations. They sat on their warm kang, discussing their son Guan Yinyan's opportunity to study in the Hou residence alongside the eldest young master.
Guan Yougen was puffing on his dry pipe, listening to Auntie Guan's nagging, "If Yinyan follows the Heir Xiao to study and the Heir discovers our schemes against Miss Liu, would he vent his anger on our Yinyan?"
Guan Yougen's brow furrowed deeply, he puffed silently on his pipe before saying, "We're not really scheming against her. We didn't shortchange her food or drink, just mentioned a few words during casual conversations. Ultimately, it's her decision. We'll do as Lady Hou says."
Auntie Guan's voice was firm as she agreed. In her opinion, Miss Liu was a fine lady, beautiful and literate. Marrying into a wealthy merchant's family in the county town as the main wife was possible, so why cling to the Heir of the Hou family? Even becoming a concubine to a rich and powerful family wasn't as good as being the main wife in a commoner's home.
Just then, the door was knocked upon. Auntie Guan opened it to see Hong'er standing there. She smiled, "Hong'er girl, what brings you here?"
Hong'er rubbed her hands together, "Auntie Guan, our young lady's room is too cold. What do you suggest for heating?"
"We country folk heat the kang," said Auntie Guan as she stepped out the door, adding, "Didn't we discuss this a few days ago?"
Hong'er's cheeks were tinged with red. Guan Dàsao had indeed mentioned heating the kang, but Liu Biqin had found the idea unclean, preferring the heat from a charcoal brazier instead.
How could Hong'er voice such a thing? She could only awkwardly say, "It wasn't so cold back then; who knew it would suddenly turn so chilly these days?"
Guan Dàsao knew the real story but chose not to expose it. She followed Hong'er into Liu Biqin's room, where the chill was palpable, making her shiver involuntarily. Seeing Liu Biqin wrapped tightly in blankets, she exclaimed, "Oh dear, such hardship for a lady of your standing!"
Her words triggered tears in Liu Biqin, who was already brimming with sorrow and grief.
Seeing her cry, Guan Dàsao sat down on the edge of the kang and sighed, "We country folk are plain-spoken. If I've been rude, Miss Liu, please forgive me."
Wiping her tears with a handkerchief, Liu Biqin replied, "Speak, Guan Dàsao."
Guan Dàsao heaved another heavy sigh, glancing around the sparse room, her face reflecting pity. "I'm not sure why you were sent to this estate, but surely you can't stay here forever? A lady of your breeding, accustomed to luxury since birth, you won't survive our hardships."
Liu Biqin, sobbing uncontrollably, asked through her tears, "Guan... Dàsao, have you or your husband visited the Marquis's mansion lately?"
Guan Dàsao shook her head. "We seldom visit the Marquis's mansion, only at year's end for accounts. Even then, it's just with the steward; we don't see the master."
"Have you heard any news of... Xiao Shizi recently?" Liu Biqin persisted.
Another shake of the head from Guan Dàsao left Liu Biqin engulfed in despair.
With sympathy on her face, Guan Dàsao added, "Miss Liu, with your looks and grace, you're bound to find happiness wherever you go. Why fixate on the Marquis's son?"
Liu Biqin remained silent, and Guan Dàsao stopped pressing. She rose to heat the kang before leaving with a sigh.
As the kang warmed and the room's temperature rose, Liu Biqin emerged from her cocoon of blankets. Approaching a worn table by the window, she drew out a small mirror.
Her delicate features reflected in the scratched copper glass, she pondered Guan Dàsao's words and asked Hong'er, "What do you think he's doing right now?"
Knowing she referred to Xiao Shizi, Hong'er replied, "I wouldn't know. But his quarters will be warmed with fragrant silver coal, and he'll step out in fur-lined robes, not feeling the cold at all."
Tears welled up in Liu Biqin's eyes. "Has he truly forgotten me? Why else would he not send even a single message?"
Hong'er, standing close, whispered, "Miss, you must plan ahead."
Clutching the mirror tighter, Liu Biqin finally spoke after a long silence, "I understand."
At her words, a look of elation crossed Hong'er's face. As a servant, her well-being was tied to her mistress's fortunes. To her, a life of abundance was synonymous with happiness.
…
On the following day, Xiao Yuming left the house after breakfast. Though his knee still ached a bit, it didn't hinder his riding. He mounted his horse with a grin, snapped the whip against its flank, and the horse galloped off with a whinny, followed closely by Yantai and Shimu on their own steeds.
They soon arrived at the riding ground. The gatekeeper, recognizing him, offered no resistance and opened the gate. It had been several days since Xiao Yuming had galloped freely, so he vigorously cracked his whip, urging his horse into a wild run along the track.
In the distance, he noticed a group of riders not far ahead. On closer inspection, his lips curled into a smile. Fortune smiled on him today; he had encountered the very person he had hoped to meet. Tightening his legs around the horse's belly, he flicked the whip to hasten its pace, quickly catching up to the group.
As he surpassed them, he directed a provocative and scornful smirk at one of the riders. The recipient, a young lad not much older than himself, couldn't stomach the insult and spurred his horse to give chase.
Pulling abreast of Xiao Yuming, he taunted, "Xiao Er, I hear you were expelled from Shanglin Academy. What, no punishment from your mother?"
Xiao Yuming cast a disdainful glance his way, "Meng Chengtian, even if I'm expelled, I'm still better than you. Heard you can't even recite the 'Hundred Family Surnames.' Hahahaha, you're truly the joke of the century."
Meng Chengtian, the younger brother of Lady Liang, had been spoiled rotten as a latecomer in the family. Disinterested in studies, the Meng family did not press him, and it became a joke among the capital's elite that he couldn't recite the 'Hundred Family Surnames' even in his teens. Now, Xiao Yuming's mockery only fueled Meng Chengtian's embarrassment and rage, and he lashed out with his whip.
Although Xiao Yuming was more flash than substance in combat, he had some training. Anticipating the attack, he leaned forward on his horse to dodge the blow. Then, rising, he lashed out with his whip at Meng Chengtian's horse, exerting full strength. The horse, pained by the strike, neighed loudly and bolted.
Meng Chengtian, perched atop the horse, clung to the reins in terror, desperate not to fall off...
PS: I remember clearly updating yesterday, how come it's not showing? Due to feeling unwell after picking up my child, I went to sleep upon returning and just realized the update didn't go through. Here's the make-up post, and today's update will continue as usual.
Chapter 86: Early Preparations are Necessary
Though Meng Chengtian wasn't book-smart, his fondness for horseback riding had honed his equestrian skills. Despite being struck fiercely by Xiao Yuming, causing his horse to bolt, he managed not to fall off. Eventually calming the animal, he wheeled it around and charged towards Xiao Yuming.
Meanwhile, Xiao Yuming had joined Qi Er and Yan Wu, engaging in lighthearted banter. Meng Chengtian, leading a few men, charged over and dismounted, ready to brawl with Xiao Yuming and his companions.
"Meng Chengtian, how about a contest between us?" Xiao Yuming suggested, tapping a riding crop against his palm.
"A contest of what?" Wary of Xiao Yuming's trickery, Meng Chengtian didn't immediately agree. However, Xiao Yuming looked at him with contempt and said, "I've heard there are red foxes in the western hills. Let's see who can catch one first."
Unaware of any red foxes in the western hills near the capital, Meng Chengtian turned to consult his companions. One of them whispered, "Indeed, there are rumors of red foxes in the western hills, their fur as red as blood and quite striking."
At this, Qi Er and Yan Wu jeered, "Meng Chengtian, don't tell us you're scared."
Confident in his hunting skills, and believing he was no less skilled than the trio opposite him, Meng Chengtian snorted, "Fine, but what's the stake?"
Yan Wu and Qi Er looked to Xiao Yuming, who pursed his lips in silence, feigning indecision. Seeing this, Meng Chengtian sneered, "What's the matter, Xiao Er, got cold feet at the mention of a stake?"
Xiao Yuming, seemingly provoked, snorted coldly and said, "If you win, I'll give you a steed from beyond the Great Wall. But what if I win?"
The mention of a steed from beyond the Great Wall immediately lit up Meng Chengtian's eyes, and he excitedly said, "Alright, if I lose, I'll give you five thousand taels of silver. How about that?"
Xiao Yuming curled his lip, "Does this young master lack silver?"
"Then what do you want?" Meng Chengtian asked.
After pondering for a moment, Xiao Yuming finally waved his hand dismissively, "Fine, fine, let it be silver."
Five thousand taels of silver could buy four or five steeds from beyond the Great Wall. But sometimes, even with money, those steeds are not easy to come by.
The two set a limit of seven days, and whoever hunted the red fox first would be deemed the winner. After the agreement, both parties set off toward the Western Hills. Along the way, Qi Er whispered to Xiao Yuming, "Why are you competing with him?"
Xiao Yuming thought for a moment, chose not to disclose the real reason, and simply said, "I find him disagreeable."
Qi Er and Yan Wu understood. The Second Prince had issues with the House of Yongning Marquis, and by extension, the Second Prince's maternal family, the Liang family, also kept their distance.
"Someone did mention that there are red foxes in the Western Hills, but no one has ever seen one. It won't be easy for you to win this time," Yan Wu said.
Xiao Yuming gave a sly smile, "My grandfather recently acquired a red fox."
Qi Er and Yan Wu were stunned at first, then burst into laughter, promptly discussing how they would spend the five thousand taels of silver Xiao Yuming was bound to win.
A group of seven or eight young noblemen, dressed in fine silk and mounted on tall steeds, entered the boundaries of the Western Hills, causing quite a stir in the vicinity. Liu Biqin and Hong'er, residing in a cottage on the Western Hills, learned of this from Guan Dashi's wife.
After Guan Dashi's wife left, Hong'er nonchalantly said to Liu Biqin, "Miss, I wonder which noble's son it is?"
Liu Biqin was inwardly troubled, but her face remained composed. She shook her head, "How would I know?"
"Anyway, it's definitely not someone from a humble family. Just from the commotion, one can tell it's a son from a prominent family." After saying this, Hong'er looked at Liu Biqin and tentatively suggested in a low voice, "Miss, shall I go and find out?"
Liu Biqin struggled internally for a moment, then nodded, "Be careful."
Hong'er happily agreed and cheerfully lifted the curtain to leave. Liu Biqin felt an indescribable bitterness within. Once a young lady from a reputable family, she never imagined that one day, she would be forced to consider compromising her dignity for survival.
But she was out of options. Xiao Yuxin had left no trace behind. If things continued this way, if he had forgotten her, was she to wait in this humble and harsh place for a lifetime?
No, she couldn't continue living like this. She had to fight for herself.
Beyond the village, Hong'er had walked for a quarter of an hour before she could see from afar a group of people standing at the entrance of two farmhouses, seemingly engaged in conversation. Drawing closer, she recognized among them a remarkably gallant young man—who else could it be but Xiao Yuming?
As Madam Liu had good relations with the Lady of Yongning Marquis, and their households had been close, Hong'er had naturally met Xiao Yuming before.
Only a young master of considerable birth could associate closely with the son of a marquis. This thought stirred excitement in Hong'er. She hid in a corner to observe and saw that after the group finished their conversation, they mounted their horses and rode into the mountains. Curious, Hong'er approached the two farmhouses to inquire.
It turned out that the travelers had asked both households to provide water and fodder for their horses. The reason they didn't rely on just one household was that the group was divided into two factions, which did not get along, and thus even their horses were kept separate.
After gathering more information, Hong'er excitedly returned to the Yongning Marquis' western mountain estate. Upon entering the house and seeing Liu Biqin, she exclaimed, "Miss, guess whom I just saw?"
Liu Biqin, looking rather melancholic, asked, "Who did you see?"
Hong'er leaned in close and whispered, "Young Master Xiao, the second son."
"Who?" Liu Biqin thought she must have misheard.
"It was Young Master Xiao, the second son," Hong'er repeated.
Liu Biqin sprang to her feet and headed for the door. Hong'er quickly grabbed her, "Miss, where are you going?"
"I must ask Xiao Yuming why Brother Chen hasn't come to see me." Tears filled Liu Biqin's eyes. If Xiao Yuming could come to the western mountains, why couldn't Xiao Yuchen?
Hong'er held her tightly, speaking urgently, "Miss, isn't it clear by now? Surely, the Crown Prince either does not wish to or cannot come to see you."
Biting her lip and shedding tears, Liu Biqin listened as Hong'er held her arm and spoke earnestly, "Miss, we can no longer rely on the marquis or the Crown Prince. You must make plans as soon as possible."
Tears streaming down her face, Liu Biqin remained silent, but her eyes slowly filled with resolve. Seeing this, Hong'er quickly said, "Miss, this is a good opportunity."
"But... my identity..." She was the daughter of a convicted criminal; discovery meant certain death. This was the very reason she hadn't dared to venture out since arriving at the western mountain estate.
"Oh, my dear miss. If the Crown Prince can hide you away, why can't someone else?" Hong'er said.
Liu Biqin pursed her lips, hesitating for a long while before saying, "Keep an eye on the movements over there."
Hong'er nodded eagerly and ran off. Guan Dasha, seeing Hong'er's frequent comings and goings, said to Guan Yougen, "It seems the Lady of the Marquis is close to achieving her goal."
Guan Yougen took a couple of puffs from his pipe and said, "Let it be, everyone has their own fate."
Guan Dasha sighed and muttered to herself, "Even marrying into a well-off farmhouse is better than entering a grand household as a concubine!"
Chapter 87: Son, I Have a Gift for You Today
Although claiming to hunt in the Western Hills was just a pretext, being cooped up at home for days had been stifling. Hence, Xiao Yuming relished the chance to frolic freely. He spurred his horse into the forest and soon spotted a rabbit not far ahead. He drew his bow, aimed, and released the string. The arrow zipped towards the grazing rabbit...
"Hit!" Yan Wu exclaimed, "Impressive, Xiao Er! Your archery skills have improved greatly!"
Xiao Yuming laughed heartily and watched as his servant Yan Tai fetched the rabbit, saying, "These days of martial training have not been in vain."
Qi Er was puzzled, "Weren't you just practicing the basics? How did your archery improve?"
Xiao Yuming explained, "I've been strengthening my stance with the horse stance daily. With a steadier base and arms, my aim naturally became more accurate."
Hearing this, both Yan Wu and Qi Er envied him. With a long sigh, Qi Er lamented, "Now that you've decided to practice martial arts, you might even become a great general in the army one day. What about me?"
Yan Wu sighed deeply too, uncertain of his future. Despite being a playboy, he harbored ambitions of his own.
After some thought, Xiao Yuming suggested, "Why don't you two venture into business? As royal merchants, you'll have more money than you could spend. Just thinking about it brings joy."
Qi Er and Yan Wu exchanged a look, contemplating the idea. Although merchants were often looked down upon, they were not merely businessmen; they were scions of a great family—whom would dare to scorn them?
"Let's not dwell on it too much. Let's just enjoy ourselves today," said Xiao Yuming as he rode deeper into the woods, with Yan Wu and Qi Er quickening their pace to follow. They decided to put the future aside and relish the present.
An hour and a half later, the three rested in a clearing within the forest. Yan Wu and Qi Er had each caught a pheasant and a rabbit, while Xiao Yuming had bagged a little more, including a wild boar—his first such catch, much to his excitement.
"This rabbit has fine fur. I'll make a hand muff for Yu Zhu with it," Xiao Yuming remarked, glancing at a plump rabbit beside him. Suddenly he stood up and declared, "I'll need to catch a couple more for hand muffs for my mother too."
No sooner had he spoken than he was back on his horse, off to hunt more rabbits. Yan Wu and Qi Er exchanged looks, with Yan Wu saying, "I ought to make one for my mother too, or she'll weep if she hears the marchioness has one and she doesn't."
Qi Er pondered for a moment, "I don't have a mother, so I'll make one for my grandmother instead."
The two also mounted their horses to hunt rabbits. It wasn't until dusk that they emerged from the woods, each servant carrying several rabbits, signifying a bountiful hunt.
The trio rode to a farmhouse at the foot of the hill, planning to feed their horses before returning home. As they reached the gate, Meng Chengtian and his group arrived too. After assessing their game, he sighed in relief upon seeing only rabbits, pheasants, and at most, a wild boar.
He hadn't caught the coveted red fox, and since Xiao Yuming hadn't either, he hadn't lost.
Xiao Yuming, indifferent to the fox, was more concerned whether Meng Chengtian had caught a "beauty" or not. From the looks of it, he hadn't. But there was no rush—it had only been a day.
"Meng Chengtian, will you come again tomorrow?" Xiao Yuming inquired.
Meng Chengtian snorted, "As long as you're there, I'll be there."
Xiao Yuming stroked his horse, declaring with haughty pride, "Young master hasn't hunted the red fox yet. Naturally, I shall return tomorrow."
Meng Chengtian replied, "Then I shall come tomorrow as well."
Never seeing eye to eye, after exchanging these few words, both parties attended to their own affairs and then rode back to the city. By the time Xiao Yuming reached the Marquis's residence, the sky had darkened. He first led Shimo and Yantai back to his own courtyard.
After sitting down in the house, he asked Shimo, "Did you discover anything?"
Shimo's primary task today was to observe any movements from Miss Liu Biquin and her maid. Hearing Xiao Yuming's inquiry, he promptly responded, "When we had just arrived at Xishan, I caught a glimpse of Miss Liu's maid stealthily glancing our way. Later, I spotted her twice more at the edge of the woods."
Xiao Yuming let out a cold laugh, "When the time comes, let big brother see for himself the woman who nearly ruined our entire Marquis's household, the one he cherishes so dearly, and see what she truly looks like."
"Let's go to Shian Garden," declared Xiao Yuming as he rose, adding, "Bring the hunted rabbits with you."
The master and servants jovially made their way to Shian Garden. Tang Shuyi had just ordered the meal to be set when she saw him return, and promptly added another pair of chopsticks.
After Xiao Yuming rinsed his hands in the basin that the maid held, he cheerily said to Tang Shuyi, "Mother, your son has brought you a gift today."
Then he glanced casually at Xiao Yuzhu, as if it were an afterthought, "And one for you, too."
Initially pleased to hear about the gift, Xiao Yuzhu's mood soured at his tone, wanting to give him a piece of her mind, she huffed indignantly.
Tang Shuyi ignored the siblings' squabble, smiling as she asked, "What gift?"
"Bring them in," Xiao Yuming called out. Following his command, Shimo entered, holding several rabbits. Xiao Yuming continued, "It's getting cold, mother. You could use these rabbit pelts to make a hand muff."
Then he glanced sidelong at Xiao Yuzhu, "And you as well."
Xiao Yuzhu's face puffed up in irritation, but Tang Shuyi laughed heartily, assuring, "Your second brother is just teasing you."
Xiao Yuzhu huffed again, her eyes sparkling as she eyed the rabbits, "I don't want a hand muff. I want to keep it as a pet."
Xiao Yuming waved dismissively, "As you wish."
No longer bothered by his attitude, Xiao Yuzhu happily got up and approached Shimo to inspect the rabbits. Noticing the smallest one in the middle, its red eyes gazing at her, her heart melted. Pointing at it, she declared, "I want this one."
As she reached out to take it, her head maid Qingmei quickly took the small rabbit first, smiling, "I'll tend to its injuries first, then give it to the young miss once it's healed."
In truth, tending to the wounds was secondary; the primary task was to clean the rabbit thoroughly.
Xiao Yuzhu gave the small rabbit another glance, then nodded and added, "Prepare something for it to eat."
On the other side, Xiao Yuchen inquired of Xiao Yuming, "Why have you gone hunting again, second brother? Have your injuries healed?"
Xiao Yuming, ever nonchalant, chuckled twice and said, "I can't sit still."
"Where did you go hunting?" Xiao Yuchen asked casually.
Upon hearing this question, Xiao Yuming instinctively thought to glance at Tang Shuyi. However, before his eyes could meet hers, Tang Shuyi turned her head to Xiao Yuzhu, who was still observing the rabbits, and said, "Come, it's time to eat."
Xiao Yuzhu uttered an "Oh" and returned to her seat. Xiao Yuming silently let out a sigh of relief; he had nearly given himself away.
"Went hunting at Xishan," he replied, his tone steady.
However, Xiao Yuchen's hand tightened around his chopsticks.
PS: A hand muff, a cylindrical accessory one can slip their hands into for warmth, is commonly used in the north. Different regions have different names for it; in my area, it's called a warm sleeve.
Chapter 88: Hardships for the Youth Aren't Necessarily a Bad Thing
The word 'Xishan' was extremely sensitive for Xiao Yuchen. Hearing that Xiao Yuming went hunting there, his entire being tensed up. He wanted to ask if Xiao Yuming had been to the Xishan villa, if he had seen Liu Biquin, but he held back because of Tang Shuyi, suffering in silence.
Tang Shuyi, of course, noticed his odd behavior, but pretended as if she hadn't seen anything. She even said to Xiao Yuming, "A hand muff made from rabbit fur will surely look lovely. Moreover, since it's hunted by my son, I shall wear it every day."
Xiao Yuming chuckled heartily, only to hear his mother continue, "Later on, hunt a leopard or a tiger to make boots for your grandfather. He will surely wear them every day too."
Xiao Yuming: "…"
Mother, your faith in me is truly boundless.
After dinner, the family of four sat together chatting. Xiao Yuchen was somewhat distracted, and although everyone knew why, no one brought it up. After the conversation, Xiao Yuming and Xiao Yuchen left the Shian Garden together. Finally, Xiao Yuchen voiced his question, "Did you visit the villa when you went to Xishan?"
Xiao Yuming shook his head, "No, there are certainly many eyes on us; I didn't dare to go."
"Did you hear any news about her?" Xiao Yuchen pressed further.
Xiao Yuming shook his head again, then after some thought, he said, "Big brother, are you still not seeing things clearly?"
Xiao Yuchen looked up at the hazy moon and replied, "I just want to know if she's doing well."
"Life certainly hasn't been good for her!" Xiao Yuming said, "She used to live in luxury, and now she's probably just getting by. But isn't this what she deserves? When Mother proposed to send her away, offering her a shop and a residence, she would have lived a better life had she agreed. But she refused!"
Xiao Yuchen was rendered speechless by the argument, and after a long while, he said, "When things calm down a bit, we'll send her away."
This was the conclusion he had reached after much deliberation over the past few days.
Hearing his words, Xiao Yuming didn't know what to say, feeling that his elder brother was too infatuated. With nothing more to discuss, the brothers returned to their respective courtyards. Xiao Yuchen didn't return to his bedroom, but went straight to his study.
Standing in front of the bookshelf, he stared at the compartment filled with piles of paintings for a long time. Then he said to Changming and Changfeng, who were standing by the door, "Bring in a brazier."
Changming and Changfeng were puzzled, but still brought a brazier into the center of the study. Xiao Yuchen stood there in silence for a long time, then with a resolute move, he took out those paintings and placed them beside the brazier.
Gently caressing the paintings for a moment, he took out a fire starter, ignited it, and picked up a painting from the pile, placing it on the fire. The painting instantly caught flame.
One by one, two by one, three by one...
As the pile of paintings on the floor gradually diminished, tears streaked down Xiao Yuchen's face.
Changming and Changfeng stood by, watching him in this state. Although they knew that Liu Biqin was not a good match, their hearts were still heavy. No matter what Liu Biqin was like, their young master had given his sincere heart.
In Shian Garden, it didn't take long for Tang Shuyi to learn about the events in Qingfeng Garden. Fearing that Xiao Yuchen would act against the Liang family on his own, sabotaging her plans, she had people keep a close watch on Xiao Yuchen's movements these past few days.
Now hearing that he had burned the paintings and cried, she sighed deeply. Ah, the love of the young!
"It seems the eldest young master has made up his mind this time," Cuicloud said.
Tang Shuyi hummed in agreement, "It's some progress, but there's still a greater pain waiting for him ahead."
Cuizhu was making the bed for Tang Shuyi and said, "Since he's decided to let go, it shouldn't be too painful when the time comes."
Both she and Cuicloud were aware of Tang Shuyi's plans.
Tang Shuyi, however, didn't pay it much mind, "It's not bad for young people to endure some hardships."
…
The next day, Xiao Yuming set out early again to "hunt," meeting up with Yan Wu and Qi Er at the city gate, and the three set off for the West Mountain together. Yan Wu and Qi Er both shared their situations upon returning home the previous day.
Having sneaked out, their return naturally set the house in a flurry. Then both of them produced their game. Yan Wu approached his mother with a grin, "Thinking of the days growing colder, I hunted a pair of rabbits to make hand warmers for you, Mother."
Lady Nánlíng was clutching her chest in feigned agony, but upon hearing his words, she ceased her complaints and smiled, saying, "My son is truly filial."
The Marquis of Nánlíng pointed at her and remarked, "Just two rabbits and you're already won over."
Lady Nánlíng clutched her chest again and protested, "Don't raise your voice at me, my chest pains."
Marquis of Nánlíng: "…"
On Qi Er's side, upon returning home, he happened to bump into his father Qi Liangsheng coming back from outside. Both father and son were stunned for a moment before Qi Er took to his heels towards his grandmother's courtyard. Unfortunately, this time he wasn't so lucky; his father caught him by the collar and dragged him straight to the study, where he got a good thrashing with a bamboo strip.
"How did you manage to sneak out today?" Yan Wu asked.
Qi Er replied, "After my dad went to the imperial court, I slipped away. Sigh, if only my dad went to court every day."
Yan Wu sighed as well, "What's so good about being an official? You have to get up before the chickens for the morning court. Usually, you're bogged down with official duties and dealing with endless intrigues, exhausting to death."
Qi Er agreed wholeheartedly, "Exactly, exactly."
At this point, Xiao Yuming said, "But it's precisely because we have someone in the family holding an official post that we can do whatever we want."
This time, Yan Wu and Qi Er remained silent. They understood these principles too, but simply didn't want to think about them.
The trio chatted as they reached Xi Mountain, and after waiting for a while, Meng Chengtian finally arrived, still looking half-asleep. In fact, Meng Chengtian was six or seven years older than Xiao Yuming, over twenty this year.
With such an age gap, there shouldn't have been much interaction between the two, but there were only so many entertaining places in the capital. The haunts frequented by both the grand and lesser rakes were limited, and thus their paths crossed, resulting in an unfriendly acquaintance.
At this moment, watching Meng Chengtian's drowsy, forcibly alert appearance, Xiao Yuming scoffed, "Meng Chengtian, don't tell me you almost didn't get up after getting exhausted on top of a woman."
Though Xiao Yuming had no such experiences, his coarse jests were spot on.
Meng Chengtian was enraged and embarrassed by his words. He had indeed spent a long time frolicking last night in the residence of a newly taken concubine. Why a concubine and not a formal wife? Because his legal wife came from a powerful family and had a fierce temper. She stipulated that he could only have two concubines; any more, and she would kill them.
So, whenever he fancied someone, he could only hide them outside. Moreover, he didn't dare hide them in his own residence, but rather in the home of his brother-in-law, Liang Jian'an.
Chapter 89: Alas, Love Was Misplaced!
Men are most sensitive about their virility being questioned, and Xiao Yuming's earlier comment was a direct hit at Meng Chengtian's manhood. Unable to bear the insult, Meng Chengtian lunged towards Xiao Yuming, itching for a fight.
Before Meng Chengtian could reach him, Xiao Yuming raised his riding crop and lashed out fiercely, creating a sharp crack that stopped Meng Chengtian in his tracks. Xiao Yuming then taunted, "Look at you, such a grown man, yet you rush forward the moment you're provoked. With such impulsiveness, it's hard to achieve greatness."
Meng Chengtian: "…..."
Damn it, being lectured about achieving greatness by a profligate young master was something no one could stomach. With large strides, he charged towards Xiao Yuming, but before he could lay a hand on him, Xiao Yuming had already mounted his horse and fled. He hastily got on his horse as well and pursued Xiao Yuming.
Xiao Yuming, galloping ahead, saw Meng Chengtian chasing after him and laughed triumphantly. He lashed his horse with the whip, steering towards the western villa of the Yongning Marquisate. He had no intention of entering the villa, but instead circled around its perimeter, with Meng Chengtian in relentless pursuit.
Although it was the outskirts, they were still far from the actual villa. However, the people inside the villa were aware of the arrival of the marquis's second son. Guan Yougen and his wife, who had knowledge of Xiao Yuming's presence in the West Mountain, guessed that he might have snuck out, considering his personality. Wary of offending him by greeting him without invitation, the couple pretended ignorance.
But now, with the second son heading towards the villa, they couldn't feign ignorance anymore. Guan Dàsǎo looked at Guan Yougen and asked, "Old man, what should we do?"
Guan Yougen stood at the edge of the villa, watching Xiao Yuming's furious gallop, followed by a young master in brocade, and frowned, unsure of what to do. He turned to his son, Guan Yinyian, and asked, "Yinyian, what do you think we should do?"
Guan Yinyian also watched Xiao Yuming's wild ride and glanced at the curious Hong'er. Recalling what the lady of the marquis had entrusted him with at the Chongguang Temple, he seemed to understand something and said, "Let it be, let's pretend we don't recognize the second young master."
"How can we do that? The second young master is at the edge of our villa, it wouldn't be right not to greet him," Guan Dàsǎo argued.
Guan Yinyian leaned closer to Guan Dàsǎo and whispered, "Mother, think about what the lady of the marquis asked you to say in front of Miss Liu at the Chongguang Temple."
After hearing this, Guan Dàsǎo pondered for a moment and then gasped in shock, "The lady of the marquis wants someone to seduce..."
"Mother!"
Guan Yinyian called out softly, and Guan Dàsǎo quickly shut her mouth, her heart pounding. Seeing her distress, Guan Yinyian led her back inside and whispered, "What happens in the marquis's family is none of our concern. You didn't harm Miss Liu, nor did the lady of the marquis. It was all her own choice."
"Mother knows, mother knows," Guan Dàsǎo replied, patting her chest. "It's just that I feel the intricate dealings within these large families are really quite complicated."
Guan Yinyian chuckled lightly; this was only the tip of the iceberg.
Meanwhile, in a corner of the villa, Guan Yougen was carefully listening to Shi Mo's instructions, "Remember, no matter who asks in the next few days, this villa has nothing to do with the marquis's family. This villa belongs to the Guan family."
Shi Mo's earnest and cautious demeanor made Guan Yougen's heart race, and he nodded firmly, "Young master, rest assured, I will remember this well."
Shi Mo smiled at him, "Then I'll trouble you, Head Guan."
After he spoke, Shi Mo disappeared from the villa, leaving Guan Yougen's heart racing.
Meanwhile, Hong'er was whispering to Liu Biqin, "I saw it with my own eyes, truly! Second Young Master Xiao was riding ahead, followed by a handsome young master with a jade crown made of white jade atop his head. Miss, you must seize this opportunity!"
Liu Biqin clutched the handkerchief tightly, remaining silent.
Hong'er, anxious, urged, "Miss, please make a decision quickly! Opportunities like this won't come again!"
"Help me dress and do my makeup," Liu Biqin said decisively.
"Ah, I will make sure to dress you as beautifully as a lotus flower," Hong'er said joyfully.
Meanwhile, Xiao Yuming had nearly circled the entire estate but had yet to catch a glimpse of Liu Biqin, which made him anxious. Was his approach incorrect? Did Liu Biqin fear making an appearance in public? If that was the case, he would need another plan to facilitate a meeting between her and Meng Chengtian.
He believed that given Meng Chengtian's lecherous nature and Liu Biqin's striking appearance, just one look would be enough to ensnare him. If the two could be brought together, his mother's plan would be halfway to fruition.
Just as he was growing impatient, a slender figure in orange appeared not far ahead. Her hair was simply adorned with a hairpin, her skin was as smooth as jade, and her beauty was as stunning as a lotus, truly a vision to behold.
Xiao Yuming couldn't help but sigh inwardly; his brother's infatuation with Liu Biqin was not unfounded. With her beauty, she would rank first or second in all of the capital. Coupled with their childhood bond...
Alas!
All he could do was sigh; his brother's love was ultimately misplaced.
While he was sighing, Meng Chengtian behind him was completely smitten, having never seen such a vision of beauty before. And now, the beauty, leaning against a withered tree with a sorrowful expression, appeared even more pitiable.
Pulling on the reins to stop his horse, he dismounted, straightened his clothes, and cautiously approached the lady. Upon nearing, he bowed respectfully, "My lady, greetings!"
Liu Biqin, who had been feigning sorrow against the tree, was "startled" by his voice and quickly hid behind Hong'er. Hong'er promptly concealed her, revealing only a corner of her dress.
Unable to see her, Meng Chengtian felt a tinge of disappointment but maintained his politeness, "Do not fear, miss, I am not a scoundrel. My name is Meng Chengtian, from the Meng family of the capital. My brother-in-law is the Empress Dowager's own brother."
Usually, revealing his identity worked wonders, but this time the lady hidden behind the maidservant remained unmoved, and replied with a timid voice, "I did not mean to disturb you, sir. Men and women should not interact so freely; I must ask you to leave quickly, please."
Meng Chengtian had no intention of leaving. He stepped forward, insisting, "It must be fate that we met here. May I inquire which family's daughter you are, miss?"
At this moment, the lady sighed deeply, laden with boundless sorrow, melting Meng Chengtian's heart. He inquired, "Why do you sigh so, miss?"
The lady remained silent, but the maidservant blocking her way spoke up, "My lady came to the capital seeking her relatives but couldn't find them. On her return, she was robbed by bandits. Thankfully, a kind soul took us in, but we are at a loss for what to do next."
Meng Chengtian's eyes sparkled upon hearing this, he quickly offered, "Who is the relative your lady is searching for? The capital is vast; how can a delicate lady like yourself find them easily? Why not come with me back to the city, and I shall assist your lady in her search?"
Chapter 90: No More Ties Hereafter
No matter what ulterior motives each party may harbor, such liaisons can easily form as long as there is mutual consent. This was the case with Liu Biqin and Meng Chengtian. Liu Biqin sought to escape her current predicament and find someone to maintain her lifestyle, like a pampered canary. Meng Chengtian, on the other hand, was smitten at first sight and yearned to possess this beauty. Their desires coincidentally aligned.
After a brief exchange, Liu Biqin bashfully agreed to accompany Meng Chengtian to the capital in search of her relatives. Meng Chengtian was so delighted that he even thought of embracing and showering her with kisses right then and there.
However, Liu Biqin mentioned she needed to bid farewell to the family she was staying with and pack her belongings. Meng Chengtian wanted to accompany her, but she refused on the grounds of maintaining a young lady's reputation. Reluctantly, Meng Chengtian agreed to wait for her return, choosing to stand guard nearby.
Not far ahead, Xiao Yuming observed the budding relationship between Liu Biqin and Meng Chengtian. Although it served his purpose, he couldn't help feeling uneasy. He worried about how Xiao Yuchen, who harbored deep feelings for Liu Biqin, would react upon learning of her actions.
Gripping the horsewhip tightly, he lashed out fiercely, causing the horse to bolt in pain. He thought bitterly that for wounding the heart of their marquis's eldest son, Liu Biqin deserved to die!
Continuing his ride, he encountered Yantai and whispered instructions to return to the Duke's mansion to retrieve the red fox. With today's events, the affairs in Xishan were coming to an end.
Meanwhile, Liu Biqin, supported by her maid Hong'er, returned to the cottage. Once inside, she collapsed onto the kang bed and burst into tears. She and Xiao Yuchen had grown up together like childhood sweethearts, and it was he who reached out to pull her from the abyss when she faced her darkest hour.
For so long, she had relied on him, believing their relationship would last a lifetime. Although she couldn't be his official wife, Xiao Yuchen would still shower her with the greatest affection.
Never did she imagine things would come to this pass. Meng Chengtian was far from a gentleman, and in both appearance and demeanor, he paled in comparison to Xiao Yuchen. How could she possibly be content with this turn of events?
But what could her discontent change? Right now, only Meng Chengtian had the power to free her from this cage and end her suffering.
"Miss," Hong'er spoke softly, trying to console her. "I've heard of this Young Master Meng before. He's the beloved late-born son of the Meng family, doted upon at home. Besides, the Meng family has the Empress Dowager as a backer. If you can win over Young Master Meng, perhaps you could even rescue Madam and Young Master."
Liu Biqin's sobs gradually subsided, and eventually, she sat up. Hong'er hurriedly wiped away her tears, urging, "Miss, you should get ready soon. Don't keep Young Master Meng waiting."
Taking a deep breath, Liu Biqin walked to the window, sat down in front of a rickety table with a broken leg, and glanced around the spartan room. Any lingering sentimentality vanished. What mattered more than love was living a good life.
"Help me wash up," she instructed.
"Yes."
Hong'er promptly went out to fetch hot water and ran into Sister Guan in the kitchen. Considering they had been forcibly sent to this cottage by the Marchioness, Hong'er wondered if Sister Guan and the others would prevent them from leaving. Smiling, she greeted, "Is Sister Guan busy?"
Sister Guan, accompanied by a young maid, was busy steaming buns. The Guan family was not beholden to the Marquis and led a decent life, affording the luxury of having maids.
"Are you here for water, Miss Hong'er?" Sister Guan asked with a smile.
"Yes, our young lady wishes to freshen up," Hong'er replied.
"Why does she want to freshen up at this hour?" Sister Guan inquired. In truth, she was well aware of every move Liu Biqin and her maid made but chose to feign ignorance.
Hong'er glanced awkwardly at Sister-in-law Guan before leaning in and whispering, "Sister-in-law Guan, if... if my young lady wishes to leave the manor, would the Marquis's household obstruct us?"
Sister-in-law Guan paused for a moment upon hearing this, then said, "The Marquis's household hasn't mentioned anything, should I have my husband inquire at the Marquis's residence?"
"No need," Hong'er quickly replied. "It's quite a hassle to make a trip to the city, especially in this cold weather."
If they inquired at the Marquis's residence, it might stir up unnecessary trouble.
Sister-in-law Guan agreed, "Alright then."
In truth, she was merely suggesting it as a formality, to show that their family had no involvement in the affairs of the Marquis's household.
Hong'er was a clever girl; she knew it wouldn't be so easy for the Marquis's household to let them go. Although she hadn't deduced that this ordeal was orchestrated, she roughly understood their stance. As long as they kept their distance from Xiao Yuchen, the Marquis's household didn't care whether they lived or died.
With this realization, Hong'er couldn't help but feel that the Marchioness was incredibly heartless. She had been on such good terms with Madame Liu previously, yet turned her back on her the moment trouble arose.
Lost in thought, Hong'er's expression darkened as she returned with the hot water. Seeing her troubled look, Liu Biqin asked, "What's wrong? Is the manor forbidding us to leave?"
She, too, feared that the manor might detain them.
"No," Hong'er shook her head. "I just think the Marchioness is too self-serving. She was so kind to you before, even mentioning taking you into their home. But she turned her back on you the moment trouble arose."
Hearing this, Liu Biqin's eyes reddened again. "Aren't all people like this? Chen... he probably has his reasons for not visiting me. It's not like the Marquis's household has only one male heir, but there's only one position for the heir apparent."
She suspected that Xiao Yuchen hadn't visited her because the Marchioness had threatened him with the position of the heir apparent.
Hong'er wrung a towel and handed it to Liu Biqin, "It's alright, Miss. From now on, the Marquis and the heir apparent... they have nothing to do with us."
Liu Biqin forced a smile, "Yes, from now on, they have nothing to do with me either."
They spent quite some time applying makeup and packing their belongings. By the time the master and servant left the manor, it was already afternoon. Meng Chengtian had already prepared a luxurious carriage, complete with maids and old servants, waiting not far away.
As the two approached, the two graceful maids hurriedly stepped forward to salute Liu Biqin, while the two old servants took their luggage. Meng Chengtian stood not far away, smiling at Liu Biqin.
On the surface, both parties managed to avoid any discourtesy.
Liu Biqin slightly bowed to Meng Chengtian and then was helped onto the carriage. As the curtain was lifted, a wave of warm, fragrant air rushed out, its comforting warmth in the chilly winter air need not be overstated.
Liu Biqin's lips curled into a smile as she stepped onto the carriage step, followed by Hong'er. Inside, the carriage was lined with fine brocade, the seats were laid with thick cushions, and the carpet underfoot was soft and plush, revealing its thickness. A charcoal brazier burned in the center, emitting no smoke but a faint fragrance instead.
Inside such a carriage, the master and servant felt as if they had returned to their former lives, confident that their current path was the right one.
