The puppies Bingo and Rolly crouched low, eyeing the obstacles in front of them. "On your bark," Bingo yelped, wiggling his hindquarters.
"Get set," Rolly yapped, whining playfully.
"Go!" they howled together, and pushed off the floor. Bingo jumped over the toy chest while Rolly went around it. Dodging around the couch, they ran into the kitchen, circling before going back the way they came. Suddenly their owner Bob came down the stairs.
Skidding to a halt, Bingo gasped as he just barely stopped from colliding into the human's legs. Rolly, however, couldn't stop in time and slammed right into Bob. Stumbling across the living room, Bob was able to catch himself before falling. He chuckled and glanced back at Rolly.
"Careful," he said kindly.
Just then Bingo and Rolly's big kitty sister appeared and rubbed against Bob's legs. Bob bent down and patted her on the head. A ringing distracted Bob, and he ran over to his laptop.
"Bonnie's calling!" he called out, and A.R.F joined Bingo and Rolly as the puppies walked over to Bob who sat down on the couch, placing his laptop on the coffee table. Hissy hopped onto the couch and crawled into Bob's lap, but when Bingo and Rolly jumped up and bounced over to Bob, she retreated to the back of the couch where she could still see the computer screen.
Splashing told the puppies that even Olivia was excited to see Bob's sister, Bonnie.
A video of Bonnie came up, and she waved at everyone.
"Hey, Bonnie," her brother greeted her.
"Hey, Bobbie. Is that Bingo and Rolly I see?"
The pups barked excitedly at their aunt. "We just had a race!" Bingo told her.
"Yeah, it was fun!" Rolly added. "Until I ran into—"
They continued to bark, but the humans started talking to each other. "Where are you again, Bonnie?" Bob asked.
"Finishing up in Madagascar, Bob. We found a few artifacts. It was an amazing time here. But…"
"But?" Bob asked.
"But I lost some extremely important tools and I can't do my next dig in my next location without them."
"Oh no!" Bob exclaimed.
"Yeah, I looked everywhere for them," Bonnie told him. "I just don't know where they could be."
"Don't worry," Bob said with a glance at his puppies. "I'm sure you'll find them before you leave."
"I hope so," Bonnie sighed.
Bob and his sister said their goodbyes, and Bob closed his laptop. "Oh, I sure hope Bonnie finds those tools," he said aloud as he got up. Placing his laptop on the counter, he glanced at his watch. "Oh! Look at the time! I'm gonna be late for work!" He grabbed his bag, said goodbye to his animals and robo dog, and left the house.
As soon as their owner was gone, Bingo and Rolly turned to each other. "Mission time?" Rolly asked, and Bingo nodded. "Bye, Hissy! Bye, A.R.F! Bye, Olivia!" the tan puppy said as he and his brother, Bingo, jumped off the couch, and ran to their dog house to get ready for their important mission to help Bonnie.
Soon they were on their way to Madagascar, and when they arrived, they paused and looked at each other. "Where do you think Bonnie's tools are?" Rolly asked.
"Not sure," Bingo admitted. "Maybe we should find Bonnie's dig site first."
"Bonnie's dig site, here we come!" Rolly started hopping around, excited; a flash of green caught his eye, and he started chasing the little creature. It was too fast for him and vanished from sight. He looked around, confused.
Bingo walked up. "What are you looking for?" he asked.
Rolly opened his mouth, but then he heard a familiar laugh and the puppies turned to see a gecko standing behind them.
"Gary!" they said together, running over to greet him.
"Hey, puppies!" the little green and orange gecko said, smiling. "What brings you to Madagascar this time?"
"Bonnie lost some tools," Rolly told him. "We're here to look for them."
"Have you seen them?" Bingo asked.
"Tools?" Gary echoed. "You know, I think I saw some things like that."
"Where?" Rolly asked, his tail wagging.
"Follow me." Gary thought for a moment before saying," No, chase me."
The puppies giggled and took off after Gary, who was always just out of reach. Bracing themselves, they got ready to pounce, but when they landed, they saw that Gary was nowhere to be seen.
"I'm gonna catch him one day," Rolly vowed, and Bingo laughed, then looked around.
"We're at Bonnie's dig site," he said. "Gary?"
"Yes?" The gecko appeared beside them.
"Where's the tools?" Rolly asked.
"I saw some lemurs playing with them over there." He pointed to a part of the jungle.
"Thanks. Come on, Rolly." Bingo started heading over there, pushing through the bushes and branches until he found a wide open clearing with trees surrounding and a pile of rocks off to one side. Panting, Rolly caught up to him.
"Where's… the lemurs?" the younger puppy said, breathless.
"I don't know," Bingo answered. "Maybe—"
He was interrupted by loud music and suddenly the clearing was filled with lemurs. The puppies were surprised at first, but when they got over their shock, they looked around.
"The tools!" Rolly said, pointing with his paw, and Bingo followed his gesture to see several lemurs playing with digging tools.
"Come on!" Bingo ran over there. As the puppies passed them, the lemurs jumped out of the way. When they got to the group with the tools, they turned to Bingo and Rolly wearily, eyeing them distrustfully.
"Hey!" Rolly greeted them in hope of breaking the tension.
They still didn't look all that friendly.
Bingo shifted his paws nervously. "Those tools." He pointed to them. "They belong to our aunt. Can we have them back?"
"Please," Rolly added, giving them his best "puppy eyes".
The lemurs exchanged glances but before they could respond, a voice rose above the music. "What is this?" it demanded.
Bingo and Rolly turned to see a ring-tailed lemur jumping down from the pile of rocks and walking over to them. There was a leafy hat on top of his head and he stood tall, stopping in front of the puppies. Rolly hid behind his brother, scared of this creature that clearly had authority.
Bingo, however, stood his ground and faced the lemur. He put on a friendly smile and said," Hello there. I'm Bingo and this is Rolly. And we were looking for those tools." He pointed to them, still being held by the lemurs they approached.
The tall lemur narrowed his eyes. "Tools? You mean, these music makers?"
"Music makers?" Bingo echoed.
Rolly slowly came out of hiding. "No, they're tools for digging, and they belong to Bonnie."
The lemur blinked. "Bonnie? What's a Bonnie?"
"Our aunt," Bingo answered.
"Interesting."
A new voice called out. "Julien!" The puppies turned to see a gray heavyset lemur joining them; a small mouse-looking lemur hurried after him. A rush of paws startled them and they jumped back as an orange she-lemur skidded to a halt between them and the ring-tail.
She glared at the puppies. "Stand back, Your Majesty. I'll deal with these intrudes!"
"Intrudes?" Rolly gasped, backing away from the female lemur. Bingo stepped in front of him, ready to protect his brother if he had to.
"Whoa, calm down, Clover!" The heavy set lemur turned to the female, eyes wide. "Look at them. Do they really look threatening to you?"
"Everyone is a threat, Maurice," the orange lemur shot back.
The ring-tail, Julien, leaned down and eyed the puppies. "What did you say your names were?"
"I'm Bingo," the black puppy said. "And this is my brother, Rolly."
The mouse-looking lemur ran over to them, eyes wide and shining. "I'm Mort!"
Julien rolled his eyes and pushed the little lemur away. "Nobody cares," he muttered. Then he turned back to Bingo and Rolly, and stood a little taller as he announced," I am King Julien, and this is my kingdom." He gestured around them, and the puppies took in the clearing and all the lemurs watching them.
Rolly whispered in his brother's ear," Wow, a king! Can we really take the tools from a king?"
"We have to try," Bingo murmured back. "We have a mission, remember?"
Rolly nodded to show he understood but he still looked anxious.
Julien walked over to the group of lemurs and took a shovel from one of his subjects. "These tools you call them," he said, turning back to Bingo and Rolly. "What do they do, if not make music?"
"Well, that right there is a shovel," Bingo told him.
"Bonnie uses it to dig and find objects in the ground," Rolly explained.
"Objects in the ground?" Julien echoed, blinking.
"Artifacts," Bingo told him.
"Interesting." Julien looked at the shovel. "And what do these… art-artif— Umm, what you said… What do they do?"
"People put them in museums for others to look at," Rolly answered.
"Hmm…" Julien looked thoughtful. "And what is a… mus-muse—"
"Museum," Rolly told him, giggling.
"They are buildings with very old things and people visit them and learn about history," Bingo told him, wondering what this lemur had in mind. Clearly the heavyset lemur, Maurice, was also wondering the same thing.
He turned to the king and asked," Why do you want to know all this?"
Julien looked at him, eyes shining. "I'm going to find my own art— things and put them in my own mus— history thingy!"
Maurice looked uncertain. "I don't know…"
"I think it's a great idea!" Mort declared, staring up at Julien with huge eyes.
"It could be fun to find old things in the ground," the orange lemur, Clover, decided.
Bingo and Rolly exchanged a look and nodded, both understanding what they should do. "We can help you build your own museum," Bingo told the lemurs.
"Great!" Julien quickly gave the shovel to Maurice and ran to the puppies. "Come on, come on! I know the perfect place to start looking for stuff!"
He ran off, followed by Bingo and Rolly. Glancing back, Bingo saw the tall lemur's friends exchanging looks before hurrying after them. Past them, the lemurs with the tools followed more slowly.
They arrived at a much smaller clearing than the one they just left. The puppies looked around. "Where should we begin looking first?" Rolly asked curiously.
"Over here!" King Julien ran to a spot near a really tall tree, and the brothers craned their heads to look at the very top, gasping when they saw an old looking plane in the branches. They lowered their eyes and saw the king using the shovel to dig near the roots of the tree.
"Oh, I get it!" Bingo exclaimed excitedly. When his brother gave him a confused look, the black puppy said," This plane looks really old and when it crashed, things could have fallen out so—"
"Those things could be underneath the dirt!" Rolly finished, bouncing in place. "We can find those things and put them in a museum!"
Nodding, Bingo ran over to Julien and started digging. Rolly joined him, along with the king's friends and the lemurs with the tools. Everyone worked but for a long time none of them found anything. But right when they were about to give up, one of the lemurs made a sound and everyone turned to him.
The lemur held up a broken glass cup, and the others gathered around to study it. Bingo and Rolly exchanged looks, wondering if this was valuable enough to put in a museum. Apparently the king didn't have any doubts because he let out an excited squeak and took the glass cup a little too carelessly.
"This is great, Ted!" he said. He ran to the edge of the clearing and gently set the cup down. "Let's find some more stuff!" he added, turning to everyone.
They continued to dig and soon they had a growing pile of old and broken stuff that seemed to once belong to people before the plane went down.
"Okay, everyone, this is great!" Julien said when they hadn't found anything else in a while. "Let's build a shack so people can come and look at all the great things I found!"
"You found?" Maurice objected. "We all helped, Your Maj-"
But the king didn't stay long enough to hear what his friend was saying. He ordered some of his subjects to carry his artifacts and hurried away into the jungle.
Bingo and Rolly exchanged a worried look, then Bingo shrugged, and they followed the lemurs.
They found the king looking around some trees, breaking off branches that hung low. Then he nodded in satisfaction and turned to the others. "This is where we will build," he announced. As Maurice and the others arrived, Julien gestured to the spot. "Go on, everyone. Start building."
His friends were looking a little uncertain, and Maurice looked ready to argue, but the look the king shot him silenced the heavyset lemur. With a sigh, he turned and began to look for things to build the museum. Everyone else hesitated, then joined in to help him.
As they built the shack, Bingo and Rolly approached the king, who sat underneath a tree, supervising the progress. He looked up when Bingo cleared his throat.
"Umm… Your Highness?" the black puppy started nervously.
Julien narrowed his eyes. "Yes?"
"C-Can we have the tools back now?" Bingo stammered.
Julien didn't reply right away. He glanced at the tools, on the ground beside him. Finally he nodded. "You can take them," he said.
"Oh, thank you!" Rolly exclaimed, and he and Bingo gathered them together and put them in their collars for safe keeping.
They turned to leave, but King Julien called them back. "Won't you stay for the opening of my mus- History thingy?"
Bingo looked at his brother, and Rolly nodded. "Sure," the black puppy answered, and Julien smiled.
It didn't take long for the museum to be built, and Julien ordered his subjects to bring the objects inside the shack. Apparently news of what they were doing spread throughout the kingdom because even before they finished setting everything up, a long line was forming outside.
When everything was ready, Julien addressed the crowd. "My subjects, I have brought you something called a museum!"
Rolly let out a happy whine. "He said it!" he whispered to his brother, and Bingo wagged his tail.
"Now, come in and see all the things I found!" the king declared, and when Maurice growled at him, he added," I mean, the things we found!"
The shack wasn't big enough to fit everyone, so only a few went in at a time. A black-and-white lemur stepped inside and looked around, then huffed in annoyance.
"Are you serious?" he snapped at Julien. "This isn't anything special! It's just a bunch of rubbish!"
Before the king could reply, the lemur turned and stormed out. Bingo shared a worried look with his brother.
"Don't worry about Hector, Your Majesty," Maurice said softly, patting him on the back. "You know how he is; he doesn't like anything."
Julien shrugged and looked at everyone else in the shack. At least they seemed to be enjoying the things the king and his friends found. He walked over to the puppies. "Thanks for your help, Bingo and Rolly," he said.
"You're welcome," Rolly yapped, and Bingo wagged his tail happily.
"But we have to go," the black puppy decided, and the brothers said goodbye to everyone and then started heading to Bonnie's dig site again. As they approached, they saw a flash of green, and Gary appeared again.
"Did you find the tools, puppies?" he asked.
They nodded, and hurried to the site, Gary behind them. They found a spot where Bonnie will be able to find the tools and said goodbye to Gary.
Now home, the puppies whined playfully as they played together. They weren't home long before Bob came walking through the door, and as soon as he entered, his laptop started ringing again.
"I wonder who that is," their owner murmured as he went to answer the call. "Oh, hey Bonnie," he said as the video of his sister came up.
"Guess what, Bobbie! I found my tools!"
"That's great, Bonnie!" Bob glanced at his puppies.
"They were right beside my tent. I must have missed them. Now I can go to my next dig site."
"That's great!" Bob repeated.
The siblings said goodbye to each other, and Bob went upstairs, while his puppies faced each other.
"Good job today, Rolly."
"Thanks, Bingo!"
They high-pawed, then started chasing each other, laughing and dodging around the furniture.
