Happy Birthday, Tony! (May 15-29, 2017)
May 15, 2017—Two weeks before Tony's birthday…
It was another Monday morning at Midtown High, and normally, it was pretty quiet as kids returned for another week of school while counting down the days until summer vacation. However, for Peter, it was far from quiet as he was counting down to a different day…his mentor Tony's birthday…his 47th birthday to be exact. Tony's birthday was two weeks away, and Peter took it upon himself to find the perfect gift for him. However, there was one problem…He couldn't think of anything.
"Dude, relax," Ned said as he and Peter walked to their next class, "I'm sure whatever you think of for Mr. Stark will be great."
"But that's just it, Ned," Peter said. "I can't think of anything, and his birthday is two weeks away."
"Exactly," Ned said, "it's 2 weeks away. You've got plenty of time."
"Not really," Peter retorted. "I don't have any idea as to what I'm giving him yet."
Ned could only roll his eyes fondly at his best friend. "That's okay," he said. "I have no doubt Mr. Stark will like whatever you decide to give him."
"Not if it's something he can't use or already has," Peter said quickly. "This is the first time we're spending a birthday together, and it has to be perfect."
Ned suddenly stopped in his tracks and simply looked at Peter. Did he really hear that right? Did he really say that Tony's gift had to be perfect? "Wow," he began as he continued walking with Peter, "I haven't heard that in a while."
Peter furrowed his eyebrows together in confusion. "What are you talking about?" he asked. "Heard what in a while?"
Ned couldn't help but chuckle and shake his head. "No offense, man," he began, "but you say stuff like that whenever you're thinking of something to give to May for her birthday or Christmas or Mother's Day…and whenever you were…you know…" he shrugged, "thinking of something to get for…you know…Ben."
"Ben?" Peter asked in shock. He looked at Ned not expecting him to compare how he was acting regarding Tony's gift to how he usually acted regarding a gift for May and Ben. Now that he thought about it…he did the same thing when thinking of gifts for both Tony and May this past Christmas. However, he supposed that he was more determined for Tony's birthday…just as he had done for May and Ben's birthdays. What did that mean? Was it supposed to mean something?
"Yeah," Ned said shrugging again, "I mean it's not a bad thing of course. It's just…Mr. Stark is really special to you, isn't he?"
"W-Well, I mean…" Peter began, "yeah, we've…we've been through a lot together. And he's helped me out a lot, you know?" He had been Tony's intern for about 7 months…excluding the two months they didn't talk after the battle at the airport in Germany and before the Vulture incident, and they really had been through quite a lot in such a short amount of time…lab days, FaceTime calls, being kidnapped together, dealing with the aftermath, patrolling together, training…so much together… What did that mean for their relationship? Were they just mentor and mentee…employer and intern? How special were they to each other?
"Hey, there's nothing wrong with that," Ned said quickly as he worried that he upset his best friend, "but, seriously, Peter, I'm sure whatever you give him…he'll love it. You know, between you and me, my mom always says that she loves the homemade gifts I give her. Think about that."
Peter couldn't stop thinking about what Ned said to him earlier that day as he laid in bed scrolling through his phone. He wasn't offended by it, especially because Ned would never say anything to upset him. He could always trust Ned to be honest with him…just like how Rhodey was always honest with Tony. He sighed as he just felt even more confused. Did it mean anything that he was so determined to find the perfect gift for Tony just as he would be for May and Ben? He couldn't make any direct comparisons with how he would act with his parents because they died when he was young, but May and Ben…they raised him. They were basically like his parents, and he always wanted to make sure they knew he loved them and appreciated everything they had done for him. What did that mean for him and Tony?
He could only sigh as he ran a hand down his face. Why was this bugging him so much? Just because he wanted to find Tony the perfect gift didn't mean that there was some deeper meaning in their relationship. Tony Stark was his mentor, and that was it. They were a mentor and mentee, who were both very smart, both superheroes, cared about each other, and had been on a lot of adventures together. That was it. Just then…Peter stopped scrolling when he found a certain video from May 2016…He was so busy being lost in thought that he didn't realize that he was back to when he and Tony first met. He smiled to himself as he played the video…
"A Film by Peter Parker" came up on the screen…making Peter roll his eyes…
"New York…Queens…it's a rough borough, but, hey, it's home…"
Peter couldn't help but cringe at the narration he gave, and he wasted no time in fast-forwarding the video to when he was in the car with Happy and Tony when they returned to Queens.
"What, are you doing a little video diary?" Tony asked as he looked at Peter's phone.
"Yeah…"
"It's alright. I'd probably do the same thing," Tony replied.
"I told him not to do it," Happy Interjected in an annoyed tone. "He was filming everything when we were on our way—"
"Hey, hey, hey," Tony quickly interjected. "You know, we should make an alibi video for your aunt anyway. You ready?"
"An alibi?"
"Yeah," Tony replied, "get in the frame."
Peter watched as he moved so that the camera was on both him and Tony, and he couldn't help but remember how awkward he felt that Tony caught him filming in the car and how unbelievable it was that he was making a video for his aunt with his hero.
"Hey, May, how are you doing?" Tony began. "What are you wearing? Something skimpy I hope…" Tony then put his head down and laughed as Peter looked at him with confusion.
Peter began to chuckle and shook his head fondly.
"Peter, that's inappropriate," Tony said with a smile placing a hand on Peter's shoulder. "Alright, let's start over. You can edit it."
"Mhm…"
"3…2…1… Hey, May! My gosh…uh…want to tell you what an incredible job your nephew did this weekend at the Stark Internship Retreat. Everyone was impressed—"
Peter chuckled again as he paused the video. He couldn't believe how that moment in the car was a whole year ago this month. He and Tony had known each other for a whole year, and they had become really close since then. Their relationship really took off after a few bumps in the road in just a matter of 7 months. That gave Peter an idea. He then went to the video section on his phone and found a video that he took when he stayed at the tower with Tony for the weekend. He clicked on the video to play it…
"What are you doing?" Tony asked suspiciously.
Peter chuckled as he could see on the video that his mentor's hand was stuck to the table…with his web fluid. He remembered that Tony made a comment that he was still getting used to the fact that Peter named his AI "Karen."
"I'm filming you, duh! The people of the world must know that genius billionaire Tony Stark is stuck to a table…with Spider-Man's webs." He finished with a laugh.
"First of all, it's 'genius billionaire philanthropist,'" Tony replied with a raised eyebrow. "Second of all…put the phone away and get me out of this, kid."
"Aw, come on, Mr. Stark," Peter replied. "Not until you admit it."
"Admit what?"
"That 'Karen' is not a silly name for an AI."
Tony sighed as Peter laughed again. "Fine," he said, "Karen is actually a nice name."
"Thank you."
The video ended, and then Peter scrolled down to another video from April 1…just a few weeks or so after the kidnapping incident and pressed play.
"Hey, guys, Peter Parker here. It's April 1, so of course, I'm going to play a prank on Mr. Stark," Peter whispered to the camera on his phone. "He's in a meeting right now, so I have some time to set this up." He put the phone on the vanity. "I've got some toilet paper rolls and a paper towel roll…tube, and all I'm telling him is that the toilet is smoking. Wish me luck."
He grabbed his supplies and placed the two toilet paper rolls on the lid so that it looked like eyes. Then he placed the paper towel tube under the lid to make it look like the toilet was smoking a cigarette.
"Okay, done," he said as he picked up the phone again, "now, we wait for Mr. Stark, but first, I've got to find a place for you guys. I need to put you somewhere he won't see you." He looked around the bathroom…until he smiled. He found the perfect spot, so he wasted no time in webbing the phone to the wall allowing the camera to get a good view of the toilet and the door. "Perfect! Now, we just need to wait for Mr. Stark to come back."
The video jumped to about 20 minutes later. Peter remembered that he edited that whole chunk out because it was just him sitting around waiting for Tony.
"Peter," FRIDAY said in the video, "Boss would like me to inform you that his meeting is finished and that he is on his way to the lab."
"Thanks, FRIDAY," he said in reply. He poked his head into the bathroom and looked into the camera giving it a thumbs up before going back into the lab and closing the door behind him just a crack so that the conversation would still be heard. There was another jump forward, and soon enough, Tony's voice could be heard in the lab.
"Alright, kiddo, you ready to get to work?" Tony asked.
"Oh, Mr. Stark!" Peter said frantically. "Y-You have to come into the bathroom quick! The-The toilet is smoking!"
There was a long pause, and Peter could easily picture the look Tony gave him when he said that. His eyebrows furrowed together trying to figure out if he really heard Peter say that. "I-I'm sorry…" he said. "The toilet is…what?"
"The toilet is smoking," Peter said with as much seriousness as he could muster up. "I-I just went into the bathroom just now, and I saw it! You have to check it out."
Soon enough, Tony opened the door to the bathroom.
"See?" Peter said. "It's smoking!"
As soon as Tony saw Peter's creation, his face dropped as he turned to Peter, who was trying his hardest not to laugh.
"It—It's smoking…" the teen said before bending over laughing hard. "April Fool's, Mr. Stark!" He then laughed some more…even as Tony sighed, shook his head, and walked out of the bathroom.
Peter couldn't help but laugh as the video stopped. He remembered what happened after the prank…and after he cleaned his prank up. Tony had a smile on for the rest of their lab session. Occasionally, they both laughed about it and then continued to work on the nanotech project. He couldn't believe that he got his mentor to laugh at a silly April Fools' prank. It made him feel good knowing that he could make Tony Stark laugh. The teen then wasted no time in scrolling to find another video on his phone, and he smiled even wider when he found another one of his favorites…from the past weekend. He and Tony spent the weekend at the Compound with Rhodey and Vision to train for the impending battle should the aliens come back…just as they promised each other. Tony drove them back to the city on Sunday...just the day before, and of course, a long car ride called for…jam sessions. So, of course, Peter had to play the video.
" 'Cause I'm back...Yes, I'm back…" Tony sang as he drove the car.
Peter turned his camera to Tony. "Who is this singing?" he asked. "Is it Led Zepplin? I love Led Zepplin!"
Tony suddenly stopped and slowly turned to Peter as the teenaged boy burst out laughing.
"Okay…I-I'm going to pretend that I didn't hear that," Tony slowly said, "and we are going to listen to every…single AC/DC song known to man…until they're stuck in your head."
Peter couldn't help but laugh yet again before the video ended.
Peter smiled fondly as he remembered them doing just that until they returned to Queens. He couldn't believe how far he and Tony had come in just 7 months…They went from awkwardly hugging in the car…to playing pranks on each other…to singing in the car together after spending weekends together, and he had photos and videos to prove it…to look back on… That was when an idea came to him…as he slowly sat up in bed. He knew exactly what to give to Tony for his birthday.
May 29—Tony's Birthday…
After two weeks of preparing and waiting, the day finally came. It was Tony's 47th birthday, and needless to say, Peter was nervous. He tried with all his might to remain calm and to reassure himself that Tony was going to like his gift, but the nervousness always found a way to creep back in. Not to mention he was still trying to figure out if the nerves were supposed to be a sign that their relationship was deeper than what he thought. He wanted to talk to May about it, but he was afraid it would be seen as "too weird." There was no way he could talk to Happy, Ned, or even Tony himself about it. So, unfortunately, he had to figure it out on his own, and even then, he still couldn't figure it out. However, the nerves about whether or not Tony was going to like his gift were more powerful. He could hardly focus on school throughout the day as he remembered that Tony's gift was in his backpack. The plan was that Happy and May were going to pick him up from school, and then they would meet up with Rhodey, Vision, Pepper, and Tony at the tower. Tony wanted a small party with the people in his inner circle at the tower, which everyone was okay with.
So, that was what happened once school let out for the day as Happy and May picked Peter up from school, and they set off for the tower.
"You have your gift, baby?" May asked as she turned to face him in the backseat.
"Yeah…y-yeah, I do," Peter said nodding. He then took a deep breath to steady his pounding heart.
"Peter, relax," Happy said, "he's going to love it. He loves anything you do."
"You really think he will?" Peter asked hopefully. "I-I mean…it's…nothing extravagant. It's just a—"
"Come on," Happy interjected, "you know he's not like that. I promise, he's going to love that. You remember the plan?"
Peter nodded. He was so nervous and excited about Tony's gift, so Happy helped him come up with a plan. At the party, once everyone had given their gifts to Tony, Peter would tell the billionaire that he had his gift in the lab and give it to him then and there. This way, it could ease Peter's nerves and give them some privacy, which Peter greatly appreciated. "Yeah…yeah, I remember," he said. That helped to put him at a little more ease. He took a deep breath. "I've got this."
"Yes, you do," May said with a smile.
The party kicked off without a hitch, and Tony was having the time of his life. All his favorite people surrounded him, and they had pizza and played board games. It was so refreshing to the billionaire to have a quiet birthday with his fiancée, his best friend, his teammate, his forehead of security, his intern, and his intern's aunt. Everything about the night was perfect.
"Guys, really," Tony said as he wrapped an arm around Peter once they finished another game, "I can't thank you enough for this. Tonight has been so perfect, and it was exactly what I wanted…just a quiet night with my favorite people. So, thank you."
"You're welcome," Pepper said before giving him a kiss on the cheek.
"All I'm going to say is…just wait till your 50th, Mr. Stark," Peter said with a smile.
Tony could only turn to Peter with a deadpan expression. "You better not blast it on social media."
Peter rolled his eyes. "Please, I would never do that," he said.
"Anyway," Rhodey said stopping Tony and Peter's banter from going any further, "we still have cake and presents. How about we give the birthday boy his presents now?"
"Well, the birthday boy sure thinks so," Tony said.
Peter felt his heart began pounding again. However, he managed to smile and nod. "Y-Yeah, sounds great," he said shakily.
Peter could feel that all eyes were on him as Tony set aside the present from Vision for the last one, but he couldn't bring himself to say anything. The nerves returned full force.
"Kid, you okay?" Tony asked.
"Uhh…well…uhh…" Peter began.
"Tony, I think Peter has his gift for you in the lab, right, Peter?" May quickly said.
"Uhh…yeah…y-yeah, it's…it's in the lab," Peter said looking at Tony nodding thankful for May interjecting when she did. "Can you…come with me to go get it?"
"Yeah, sure, of course," Tony said.
"Why don't you go do that?" Pepper said. "We'll leave the cake out and call you when it's time to come up."
"Yeah, sure, sounds good," Peter said nodding.
With that said, Peter and Tony left their little group and headed down to their favorite place…the lab. As soon as they were alone, Peter felt himself relax just a little. Thankfully, he remembered to bring his gift down with him, and he saw Tony looking at him.
"You okay?" Tony asked raising an eyebrow at his intern.
"Yeah, I'm okay," Peter said nodding quickly. "It's just…my gift isn't really flashy, so I don't want you to be disappointed."
Tony shook his head and chuckled. "Pete, you should know me well enough by now," he said placing a hand on Peter's shoulder. "You know I don't care about how…flashy the gift is. I will love it because it came from you, and that's it."
Peter couldn't help but smile. "Yeah, I know, Mr. Stark," he said. He took a deep breath. "Well," he held out the small, wrapped box, "happy birthday, Mr. Stark."
"Thank you, kid," Tony said as he took the gift and unwrapped it. "Is there a reason we needed to do this down in the lab?"
"Trust me," Peter replied, "you'll find out."
Tony eyed his intern with suspicion and continued to open the box, and when he finally did open it, he saw a small USB drive on top of a small laptop. "Oh wow," he said with genuine excitement as he took them out, "did you make this?"
"Well, I didn't make the USB drive obviously," Peter replied, "but I made the laptop from old parts. There's something that's on the USB drive that's part of the gift. You just need to put it in the laptop."
"Ohh…alright," his mentor said with excitement. "So, I just…turn the laptop on…?"
"Yep," Peter replied.
Tony did as instructed and turned on the laptop. Sure enough, Tony saw a message pop up on the screen…
"Welcome, Mr. Stark! To access your amazing birthday present…place the USB drive in the port…"
Tony and Peter couldn't help but chuckle at the message on the screen, and Tony wasted no time in putting the USB drive in the port. Quickly, the video popped up on the screen, and then Tony pressed play. The video began…with another message typed on a black background…
"Happy 47th Birthday, Mr. Stark!"
The message faded before another one came on the screen…
"It's been a year since we first met…"
Tony couldn't help but realize that the message was right. It had been a whole year since the Civil War among the Avengers…since Steve betrayed him…since Rhodey was paralyzed, but more importantly…a whole year since he and Peter first met when Tony recruited him. So much had happened during that time. His thoughts were then interrupted when another message came on the screen…
"…and just 7 months since I officially became your intern…"
"…so much has happened since that first car ride after Germany…"
Then, a video came on the screen, and Tony recognized it immediately when he saw himself in a tilted frame.
"What, are you doing a little video diary?" he asked Peter.
"Yeah…" Peter said off-screen.
"It's alright. I'd probably do the same thing," Tony replied.
Tony couldn't help but feel astonished as he watched their first video together. Had this really been from one whole year ago? He watched how it was slightly awkward between him and Peter while they made this "alibi video diary" for May. He found himself cringing slightly at the "skimpy" comment to May. "Please tell me that your aunt never saw that," he said nervously.
Peter chuckled and shook his head. "Nah, don't worry," he said. "I made an edited version," he said. "This is for your eyes only."
"Always knew I liked you, kid," Tony said before pressing play again allowing the video to continue.
The video faded on him and Peter looking into the camera, and then another message appeared on the screen…
"You've been teaching me a lot…about science…how to be a superhero…how to be better than you (still don't think that's possible)…"
"Oh, it's possible," Tony said aloud earning another chuckle from Peter.
"…you've protected me…in more ways than one…"
Then, Tony saw a montage of small clips of whenever he and Peter patrolled together and he came to Peter's aid and then…
"Go, Peter, go! GO!"
"He's out, Tones!" That was Rhodey's voice.
He could see Peter moving in a dark space away from something, but he remembered that night before they were kidnapped by Hammer. It was the night Peter got stuck in rubble…just like on Homecoming night.
"There we go," he heard his own voice. "You're okay, kid. You're okay. You're alright. You did a great job, bud."
"Thank you, Mr. Stark."
"You're welcome, kid. You know I'm always here if you need anything—big or small."
The video faded to black, and Tony couldn't help but mentally note that while he always did his best to protect Peter and to be there for him…Peter always tried to do the same in return. The kidnapping incident…he risked revealing himself to save Tony…was willing to sacrifice himself so that Tony wouldn't agree to Hammer's demands. Not to mention he pretended to be sick to get Tony out of that interview.
His thoughts were interrupted when another message appeared on the screen.
"You've always been there for me…for the big things and small things…"
The message faded before another one emerged…
"We've also shared a lot of laughs together…"
Then that message faded when another video emerged, and as soon as Tony saw himself stuck to the work desk in the lab, he immediately knew what it was…
"What are you doing?"
"I'm filming you, duh!"
It was from the first weekend Peter stayed at the tower with him while May was away. Looking back, a part of Tony felt that he jumped the gun in inviting Peter to stay with him that weekend. It had only been less than a few weeks since they took the picture and since the Vulture incident, but then again, Tony couldn't help but wonder if that weekend helped them get to where they were now. The weekend went so well as they continued to open up to each other…and to share some laughs together as Peter was demonstrating in this video. Then the next video came on the little screen…
"Is it Led Zepplin? I love Led Zepplin!"
Tony couldn't help but groan as his video-self looked at Peter as if he had grown 10 heads. "Still hurts when you said that," he said as Peter laughed. "How is that us sharing laughs? You were the only one laughing!"
"It was for my own amusement," Peter said with a shrug. "Plus, we were laughing after…when you made me listen to every…single AC/DC song known to man."
"This is true," Tony said. Then he ruffled Peter's hair. "Wise ass…"
Peter chuckled at the statement as he lightly swatted Tony's arm away before they continued to watch the video. The clip faded, and another message appeared on the screen…
"We've been through a lot together…laughs…tears…some scary situations…and we've always managed to get through it together. You've been there for me in more ways than one…for the big things and the small things, and I will be forever grateful for that, Mr. Stark. You've been an amazing mentor and friend…"
Peter couldn't help but bite his bottom lip reading that. He had a hard time trying to figure out what to say. For some reason, it felt…weird simply referring to Tony as just a mentor and a friend. He felt like their relationship was deeper than that, but what was it? On top of that, he still couldn't get what Ned said about him acting like he did when getting a present for Ben out of his head. Nevertheless, he simply shook his head and focused on the video.
"…and I can't wait for what lies ahead of us because I know we will face it together. Happy Birthday, Mr. Stark! Here's to many more adventures together…Iron Man and Spider-Man…"
"Iron Man and Spider-Man…" Tony repeated as the message faded. He sniffled as he quickly wiped away tears that were forming in his eyes.
"Mr. Stark, are you crying?" Peter asked.
"No…no, I'm not, kid," Tony quickly said. "I-I just got something in my eye." He took a deep breath and then turned to Peter pulling him into a tight hug. "That was great, Pete. Thank you."
Peter wasted no time in returning the gesture. "You're welcome," he said burying his face in Tony's shoulder. "I know it's nothing extravagant, but I was looking at the videos in my phone and just thought it would be cool to look back on how far we've come, you know?"
"Peter, I already told you. I don't care about how flashy or extravagant the gift is or anything like that," Tony said as they pulled away. "This is the best gift I've ever gotten, and you want to know why?"
"Why?" Peter asked warily.
"Because it came from you," Tony replied pointing at Peter's chest. "That's why. It's something that's special to the both of us, and I'm honored that you put all this effort into it for me." He then pulled Peter into another hug. "You mean a lot to me, Pete, and I'm glad I get to spend this birthday with you."
Peter smiled as he returned the gesture and hugged Tony again. "You mean a lot to me, too, Mr. Stark," he said closing his eyes smelling Tony's cologne as he hugged him tighter feeling the warmth swell in his chest. He felt safe and protected in his mentor's embrace…just like he did whenever Ben…hugged him. Realization slapped Peter across the face as his eyes shot open. Ned was actually right. He acted the same way he did with Ben and May. He put effort into his gift for Tony. He went to Tony whenever he needed help with a problem, and…whenever Tony hugged him…he felt safe and loved. There really was something more than a mentor and mentee relationship going on between them…It was more like…father and son. He saw Tony Stark as a father-figure… It all made sense now. He was jolted out of his thoughts when he and Tony pulled away from each other, and all he could do was look at Tony with widened eyes…seeing him in a whole new light.
Tony couldn't help but feel confused as he saw Peter staring at him as if he had seen a ghost. He furrowed his eyebrows together. "W-Why are you looking at me like that?" he asked. "You okay?"
"Sorry, it's just…" he didn't know what to say. Should he even tell Tony now? Did he need to tell him? How would one even tell his mentor that he had been like a father to him? Did that mean he had Daddy Issues like Jake Peralta? He couldn't do it now. Not on Tony's birthday. "…uhh…I'm…I'm really glad you like the video."
Tony smiled as he patted Peter on the shoulder. "I don't just like it," he said. "I love it."
Peter could only smile, but before he could say or do anything else, FRIDAY spoke up.
"Boss," FRIDAY said, "Ms. Potts would like me to inform you that the cake is ready."
"Thanks, FRI," Tony replied, "we'll be right up." He then looked at Peter. "Shall we, bud?"
"Yeah, let's go," Peter said with a wider smile.
Tony wrapped an arm around him and guided him to the elevator, and Peter didn't hesitate to return the gesture. Not once did it feel awkward. It felt right. It felt comfortable, but now Peter wasn't sure what he was supposed to do with this revelation. Should he tell Tony or just keep it to himself? However, he decided that for now, he would keep it to himself and figure it out on his own, and then he could go from there.
Author's Note: Annnnnnnnd that's a wrap on Chapter 24, boys and girls! We've got some more fluff and…Peter finally realizing that he sees Tony as a father-figure. I was talking about this chapter with my best friend, Superherotiger. And we both believe that at some point Peter had to have realized just how deep the relationship between him and Tony was…that it was deeper than mentor/mentee and that he would be the first to realize it between the two since Peter had a great relationship with Ben (who was also a father-figure to him) and was able to make some comparisons. However…Tony still wouldn't really know at this point since his father wasn't that great of a guy. Plus it also ties into Raise Me Up as Peter was wrestling with the idea of him seeing Tony as a father-figure in that fic as well.
Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed it! I'm sorry it took so long. I had a lot of fics to write, but hopefully, the next one won't be too long of a wait. Up next is going to be a good ol' lab day for Tony and Peter! Don't forget to leave a review! Thanks, guys! We are officially 30 chapters away from the end, and I'm so excited to see what you all think of the rest of this fic! See you in the next chapter!
