Usopp had run off to the shore line. Neville is not far behind. Usopp was sitting on the cliff while Neville leaned against one of the trees. Neither had said anything. Usopp was in his own thoughts and Neville was simply keeping him company in case he needed someone to talk to. To both of their surprise, Luffy appeared in front of Usopp, his feet hanging from one of the branches. "What are you doing here?" Usopp asked.
"Oh you know. Nothing," Luffy answered. His feet let go of the branch and he started to walk on his hands until he lost his balance and sat down next to Usopp. Neville went over to join him.
"I can't stand that butler. The way he insulted my dad like that," Usopp said.
"Yeah. I hate him too," Luffy agreed. "Yasopp is a great man."
Usopp started to cheer up. "Right. I've always been proud of him. The way he lives every day, putting his life on the on the open ocean. He made a brave choice and I admire him for that. And then that stupid butler had to stomp all over my pride."
Luffy was clapping his feet together. "So are you really not going to see that girl again?" he asked. Usopp winced and looked down in thought.
Neville got up and went to lean against the tree. "I know what Klahadore said hurt. But if you really don't go back to see Kaya then he's going to have the last laugh."
Usopp nodded. "True. Well, I'll consider it if that butler apologizes to me."
"That butler right there?" Luffy asked, pointing to the shore below them. Usopp and Neville looked down in surprise to see Klahadore meeting up with a strange man that neither of them recognize. They quickly flatten themselves to the ground with Usopp shoving Luffy's head down to make sure they weren't spotted.
"What's he doing here?" Usopp asked.
"More importantly, who is he with?" Neville wondered.
Klahadore was scolding the strange man for sleeping in the road but the stranger, who Klahadore called Jango simply waved off the scolding.
"So you two haven't seen him before?" Luffy asked the others.
"A guy that weird? I'd definitely remember," Neville said.
They continued to listen as Klahadore asked Jango if everything was ready. "But of course. We can start at any time on the rich girl murder plan." Neville and Usopp froze in fear at hearing this but Luffy just stayed confused.
"Don't call it murder. I hate the sound of that," Klahadore said.
"Oh right. Accident," Jango corrected. "It's going to be an accident. That you planned."
Now the trio on the cliff were really confused. Murder Kaya? And does it look like an accident? And this was Klahadore's idea? Of all people.
"What do you think they're talking about?" Luffy wondered in his usual naive way.
"Keep your voice down and we'll find out," Neville whispered.
Jango sat down on a nearby rock. "So on your signal we storm the village, make sure to 'accidentally' kill the rich girl. Then you inherit her fortune and we all get paid right?"
"You moron! How am I supposed to inherit her fortune if we're not related?" Klahadore asked.
"By working really hard," Jango answered as if it were obvious.
"Of course not. Now pay attention cause this is the most crucial part of the plan. Before you kill Kaya either you are going to use your hypnosis or have one of The Snake Brothers use the Imperius Curse to make her write her will. And it will read 'I leave my entire fortune to my butler Klahadore.' Then and only then will I inherit her vast fortune. And no one will suspect a thing. I've spent three long years gaining the trust of everyone in the village so it will be no surprise that I will be the one to inherit everything."
Neville and Usopp couldn't believe what they were hearing. Klahadore spent three years here just to kill Kaya and claim her wealth. All that talk of caring for her and making sure nothing happened to her was fake. Harry was right. This man really is a savage. How could things get worse?
As in the ways of the universe, the moment those two thought that, Jango spoke up. "Three years as a butler for this huh? You sure had us scared back then Captain Kuro."
KURO? As in Kuro of a Thousand Plans? As in the pirate with a 16 million Beri bounty on his head?
Oh yeah. It just got worse.
Jango went on to state how three years ago Kuro grew tired of being a pirate so he faked his own death just to set up this plan. Kuro angrily told Jango to not use his real name claiming that he abandoned that name long ago and wishes to obtain wealth without attracting the marines.
Neville and Luffy looked over at Usopp who was gripping his bandana in fear and frustration. Luffy didn't really understand what was going on but he did understand one thing. Those people were going to hurt Usopp's friend and he didn't want that. So he stood up and started to yell at the two below him. "Hey you creeps! You better leave that girl alone!"
The two villainous pirates looked up to see Luffy glaring down at them. Usopp also shot up trying to urge Luffy to get back down. Neville quickly rolled into the bush next to him so the others didn't see him. His hands glowed with magic in case the other two tried something.
Kuro noticed Usopp and asked if they heard anything interesting. Usopp tried to deny it but Luffy admitted to having heard everything. Neville could no longer see what Kuro and his partner were doing but he could hear Jango out to his friends. "Pay attention to this ring you two. On One-Two-Jango you will fall into a deep sleep." Usopp took cover thinking Jango was going to attack him but Luffy watched the ring in curiosity. When Jango finished counting Luffy started to slump forward and over the cliff. Neville quickly shot up and grabbed Luffy by the scruff of his shirt, pulling him back towards them. Luffy just flopped down onto the grass snoring. He was dead asleep.
Usopp breathed out a sigh of relief. "That was a close one. Come on Neville. We've got to warn the village." Usopp took off running but Neville quickly caught up to him and grabbed his arm, holding him back. "Neville, what are you doing? We have to get a move on."
"Usopp there is no way anyone in the village would believe us," Neville tried to warn. "It's our word against Klahadore."
Usopp wrenched his hand from Neville's grip and grabbed his friend by the shoulders, shaking him. "But they're going to attack the village tomorrow. They're going to kill Kaya!"
"I know that but there is no way anyone is going to believe you," Neville tried to reason. "Every day you go off about pirates attacking the village to the point where the villagers treat it as part of their routine. Not to mention the fact that Klahadore is one of the most respected people around. If you go off saying that he's a pirate, the villagers will do more than scold you. They'll actually try to hurt you."
Usopp didn't want to admit it. But Neville was right. No one would believe him. His body started to shake and he sank down onto his knees. "Then what are we supposed to do?" he asked in between sobs.
Neville knelt down next to him so he could be at eye level with his friend. "Well we're pirates too aren't we. And our home is our treasure. So we've got to protect it."
"Two of us against a whole crew!" Usopp argued. "Against Kuro of a Thousand Plans!"
"Well what about Luffy and his crew?" Neville suggested. "Luffy doesn't want anything to happen to Kaya either and I'm sure his crewmates will believe us if he vouches for us."
Hearing that ignited hope within the sniper. He gave a curt nod. "Alright. Let's get Luffy and find the others." The two made it back to the cliff where they found Luffy still sleeping. It took a few minutes before they were able to wake him up and fill him in on their request. Luffy of course eagerly agreed and they went to go find the others.
Zoro, Nami, and Harry were with Carrot, Onion and Pepper alongside the fence when the trio found them. The kids ran up to them when they saw how pale Usopp looked. "Hey Captain, are you okay?" Carrot asked.
"Huh? Oh yeah I'm fine," Usopp lied. In truth he was still shaken up by what he had heard. "Hey listen kids it's getting late so why don't you guys head on back home." The children started to protest but Neville pacified them by saying how their parents would worry if they didn't get home soon since the sun was starting to set.
"Oh yeah you're right," Carrot said.
"You guys should probably head home too. Lest you want Neville's gran to come looking for you guys," Onion said. Neville and Usopp tensed up at that before bidding the kids farewell. Once they left, the duo started to panic.
"Oh man. What are we going to do about your family?" Usopp asked.
"We'll just sneak out later into the night," Neville figured. "Right now we need a plan."
Nami was confused. "What are you guys talking about? Plan what?"
Luffy addressed his navigator. "Oh yeah, turns out that stupid butler is actually a pirate and he tricked Kaya into thinking he was a nice person so he could steal her fortune."
The others are taken aback at this and Usopp declares his and Neville's intentions to protect the village and make sure those pirates never reach it. The other three Straw Hats agree to help with Nami calling dibs on whatever treasure Kuro's pirates have.
Neville gave the Straw Hats a bow. "Thank you so much for your help. We'll meet up on the shoreline around Midnight tonight to discuss our plan." The others gave a nod and Luffy walked off to the restaurant declaring that he wants meat. Harry gave a chuckle and followed his twin before he caused any trouble. Nami and Zoro right behind them. Usopp and Neville walked back to Neville's place so they could have dinner themselves. All the while making preparations on how to sneak out and what to do about Kuro and his crew.
