"Okay now I know you're just fishing, Sawyer. We've talked about this. I gave up my heavy hitter in the courtroom, you let me keep my Ace in the reporter room."
That did catch at least Kara's attention as she and Alex milled around waiting for their lunch orders.
"I don't know Len." Maggie sighs her voice carrying a more playful undertone that truly serious. "Don't get me wrong it was a total win for me getting thee Arthur Pym in my deck but…."
"You're not taking my Ace." Lena snaps her gaze slipping back towards the listening Danvers sister before her eyes drop back to the tabletop. Her cheeks dusted pink now. "besides you've already snatched my best shot for a PI."
"Not my fault you didn't think of him first, L." Maggie chuckles skimming the tip of her pen down her own list with a serious kind of expression. "Alright, so we've covered the courts, medics, media…."
"Extra personal security," Lena adds her gaze skimming down the small notebook she was writing in.
"Yeah, try taking her away again and I'm breaking your hand for real." Maggie warns with a laugh without looking up from her own list.
At this, Kara felt her own hands curl into fists at her side. "Try it. Just try it." She hisses while Lena laughs with a prodding "Oh yeah, my girl will allow that. She'll send you right into the sun."
"Huh? Try what?" Alex asks from her shoulder only half listening. "Also, what the hell is taking them so long? Did they have to go out and milk the cows or something?" she huffs resting her back against the counter with a check of her watch. "We've already been waiting like five minutes." She sighs "and it's not like this place is wall to wall. What the hell is taking so long?"
"What are they doing anyway?" Kara questioned gesturing towards the two they'd left bickering a few tables away mostly to avoid another of her elder sister's ravings. She was learning fast that Alex was even more grumpy than normal when she was hungry. A growing trend Kara's finding when her elder sister studies until in her words 'brain jelly' for her college exams. Or at least she had when they'd been actual teenagers.
"It's an Earth thing." Alex offers in attempted explanation as her stomach gives another not-so-subtle rumbling of her hunger. "Taking people real or fictional and making a dream team if you will."
"Why?" Kara asks mirroring Alex's leaned-back posture against the edge of the counter.
Alex shrugs. "For kicks?" she offers. "Also, a fun way to kill time." she adds with another shrug of her shoulders. "Vic and I would do it all the time during Calc waiting on the other slowpokes to finish their tests before we could all cut out."
"Earth is weird." Kara sighs fidgeting nervously with the ends of her glasses after catching Lena sneaking yet another glance in her direction.
"Yeap." Alex agrees with a laugh noticing the way Maggie kept looking up at her then quickly away again once she caught Alex already watching her. "then again it's no weirder than being turned back into teenagers." Alex remembers with a forced laugh her fingers still drumming impatiently against the countertop. "Now where the hell are…."
The hard jabbing of the eraser end of a pencil against her arm has Alex turning to find Maggie standing far closer than she'd anticipated with an instructive "have this." as her crush offers over the uneaten half of a granola bar then to the Danvers siblings surprise Maggie swiftly leans in to press a kiss against Alex's forehead with a whispered "It's gonna be okay, Danvers" against her skin then she was gone sliding back into her seat at the table as if she'd never moved at all.
"Finally." Kara sighed when she saw movement from the back kitchens the same time the bell above the door jingled signaling the entry of a few more customers as at her elbow her elder sister was still blinking in a daze as her unfocused eyes watched Maggie's every move.
"Lookie, lookie boys. Here we come for just these two and we catch two more all for free." The newcomer chuckles eyes dancing in glee between the four teens. "Looks like that finder's fee we were promised just got a lot bigger."
Alex immediately shook off her daze to stand defiant in front of her younger sister.
"Seriously, kid?" the speaker laughs then gives a commanding whistle through his teeth and a barked "Get'em boys" to the waiting gang behind him.
Kara immediately pulled back across the countertop by her ponytail with a glowing green band quickly clipped around her throat in the one-sided struggle.
"Stay the hallway from my sister," Alex growled lunging into the fight at Kara's first strangled, choking cough as her hands clawed at the deadly bit of jewelry only for matching cuffs to be wrestled onto her wrists and once, she was fully pulled back behind the counter around her ankles stopping any further attempt at a struggle as those chilling green veins burn under her skin.
"Shut up pipsqueak." Another man scoffs dragging the struggling elder Danvers sibling back locking in a tight bear hug from behind. Not that Alex allowed the grip for long as she kicked out once he attempted to lift her from the ground.
The man then dropped with a groan by a sudden energy burst by Maggie holding a sleek kind of weapon in her hand. A weapon that was soon tossed in the gasping Alex's direction with a commanded "Danvers, catch." As a smaller yet similar-looking weapon was pulled from beneath the girl's leather jacket.
"Winn know you snatch his prototype?" Alex questioned now standing back-to-back with her crush.
"This one was Lena's." Maggie answered back giving the Luthor some means of cover fire as she dodged towards the wheezing figure of Kara still struggling to catch her breath behind the lunch counter as more potential attackers seemed to appear out of thin air. Closing in around them.
"A lot more fight than expected." The seeming leader of the attackers laughs as if in praise. "But the price is too good to let you go that easy." He comments still talking more to himself than to any of the struggling bodies around him.
A snarled "Stay away from her." Followed by the tackling slam of a body against his back only adding to his anger as he stalked towards the gasping blonde one carrying the heavier price tag still struggling pitifully behind the lunch counter.
"Doubled prize." He muses gripping the hissing attempted rescuer by her hair as he dragged her around from the half hold, she had on him. "Better than going back completely empty-handed." He finishes with a sigh as he gives another whistled command to the few of his men left standing as several heavy armored black vans screech to a halt outside the smashed front window.
Then they were gone in what seemed a swirling of inky blackness as a few familiar black clade agents stormed in. Weapons drawn.
The last thing Alex saw before a nauseous wave of fatigue overtook her sending her falling into unconsciousness into one of the newcomer's waiting arms.
