Eloped. They got eloped. Eloped.
When Pam told him, Jesse just stood there. His blood was pounding in his ears. His beautiful sister's beautiful smile slowly faded to a frown.
"Jesse?" Aren't you happy for me?"
Jesse looked at her. "You want the honest truth from me, Pam? No. I'm not."
Pam looked injured. "Jesse!"
"He's not good enough for you, Pam! Who proposes marriage at eighteen years old? It's not smart."
Pam's mouth dropped open. "How could you say that, Jesse? He's been nothing but kind to you and you're acting like a complete ass."
Jesse just scoffed and turned away.
"I can't believe you, Jesse." The emotion in Pam's voice made him turn back. Her eyes filled with tears. "Danny and I love each other, so we got married. There's nothing wrong with that. And if you have a problem with the man I love, I have a problem with you." She turned and stalked out of his room, slamming the door and shaking the pictures on his walls.
Jesse was speechless. Red clouded his vision, and he turned and punched the wall as hard as he could, not expecting his fist to go through the plaster and leave a gaping hole behind. He shook out his hand, wincing from the pain.
"Jesse? What was that?" His mother's voice called from downstairs.
"Nothing, Ma!" He yelled back. He tried to ignore the prick of irritation he felt at the sound of her voice, but it was difficult when his parents had been so annoyingly supportive of this marriage thing. Of course they were upset at first, always wanting a big wedding for their daughter, but they soon got over it at the thought of their girl being a married woman. Hearing their elated voices felt like a punch to the stomach.
He had to get out of the house.
"Where do you think you're going?" Nick stopped Jesse at the door as he was pulling on his jacket.
"Out."
"Jesse..." Nick started, a warning note in his voice.
"I'll be back before dark, Pop, okay?" Jesse slammed the door behind him. He hurried down the steps and was running down the street before anyone could stop him. The wind whistled past his ears, but did nothing to cool his mood. He was surprised to feel tears streaking down his cheeks. Not sad tears, but angry tears. Every time he thought about his young, beautiful sister exchanging rings with that...that geek, heat coursed through his veins.
Somehow, suddenly, Jesse found himself on Danny's doorstep, and without thinking, he was knocking on the door, and without speaking, he was roughly shoving his brand new brother-in-law by the shoulders.
Danny stumbled back a few steps. It was hardly noticeable under his perfectly neat appearance, but there were faint dark circles under his eyes. "Jess?"
That set him off already. "Don't call me that," Jesse snapped, stepping inside even further.
Danny looked back at him, eyes wide. "What's wrong?"
"Why did you have to go and marry my sister?"
"Jesse—"
"You're eighteen years old, man! Who gets married at eighteen years old?"
Danny held up his hands defensively. He looked even more tired. "Jess..."
"Don't call me Jess!" Something in Jesse snapped, and the next second his fist was flying into Danny's stomach. Danny hit the wall behind him. Jesse felt a twinge. Danny was clearly trying to keep his legs steady beneath him, but was failing, and he slid down the wall to the floor. His pained brown eyes lost focus on the room around him; It was this that released the flood of regret that rushed through Jesse right then. He was at his side in a moment.
"Are you okay? I'm sorry. Oh gosh, I'm sorry!" He ran his hands through his dark hair, unsure what to do, panic beginning to overwhelm him.
"Iss...okay," Danny gasped, barely able to get his words out. His hands were grasped around his middle, his fingers bunched into his shirt. Jesse noticed a gold band wrapped around his finger.
A wedding ring.
Pam came immediately to Jesse's mind, and shame burned inside. "No, it's not, it's not okay," Jesse stuttered. "What I just did was horrible, oh gosh, what have I done?" He stood and began pacing the room.
"Jesse..." Danny panted, his voice beginning to sound clearer. "We might ha-have to...go to the...'mergency room."
Jesse took a deep breath. He nodded.
Pam was going to kill him.
