Minutes to Heaven
Part V
She looked at the duffle bag on her 'new' bed tiredly. Toshinori had dropped by with it not too long ago, letting her also know of her options, and she had mixed feelings about staying at the Nighteye Agency on a semi-permanent basis.
Izuku admitted she felt safer like this and it was easier on her nerves and mind just sticking to the building and not going back and forth between there and UA, especially traveling by…train.
She couldn't stop herself from feeling like throwing up every time she rode it.
That said, she was also afraid she was infringing too much on Sir's time and space, and was asking too much of him. He had already done too much for her; now he would be having to spend even more time with her than he'd probably cared to.
Sighing to herself, she changed into her nightclothes and climbed into her bed, huddling to herself under her covers as she closed her eyes and tried to go to sleep, feeling uneasy.
'Get away, get away!'
Her mind was screaming it over and over again, but she could still remember how it felt to have everything torn apart, molecule by molecule, skin, sinew, bone — and then the reverse happening as she was stitched back together and yet feeling as if pieces of her was missing —
"Hold still," he ordered and the ruby eyes of a sad, tiny girl watching them made her want to puke.
So she did and he tore her apart again and then pieced her back together.
Shhh, shhh, Ninth.
Wake up, for you are not there.
With a stifled scream, Izuku shot up in her bed and looked around her in fear. It took her a few minutes to reorient herself and to recognize her new room in the Nighteye Agency, but she steadied her breathing, faintly hearing murmurings that helped soothed her. She shook her head and slowly got out of her bed.
After that nightmare, memories of a time she wished she could forget, Izuku couldn't help trailing out of her room and to the Agency's break room. However, she paused awkwardly by the door after she'd entered, seeing Mirai already in there and pouring coffee. He noticed her entrance before she could back out, looking surprised to see her.
"Couldn't sleep?" he asked as his bright yellow eyes scrutinized her, making her inwardly squirm and want to fidget. She replied by shaking her head quietly. "I'll make you some tea then."
She didn't decline, traipsing closer into the kitchen and sitting herself down at the table. While he worked on boiling water with the electric kettle, she observed him silently. He was dressed casually again, this time with dark blue lounge pants and a plain white shirt that surprisingly showed his leanly built body.
"Is it okay if I ask why you're still up too?" she looked down at her lap, her hands ending up fidgeting together after all.
"You're welcome to ask anything," he set down her tea carefully in front of her and took his own mug with him, hesitating momentarily before sitting in the chair next to her. "And I was finishing up some work. Tomorrow, we're going to have to call and organize with some of the other agencies that are working with us."
"Oh…okay," she mumbled, fingers twisting around each other over and over and over —
He reached over and carefully laid his hand on hers. His was big enough to actually cover her smaller hands and she stilled her hands underneath it. And yet, she was momentarily reminded of another man whose hand had grasped hers and she almost yanked her hands away. But Mirai's hold was just firm and still gentle, warm and carefully still.
It was nothing like Chisaki's.
"I was dreaming of what happened," she murmured, lost in the sight of their hands carefully sealed together. "I dream of him most nights."
She blinked back tears, feelings of despair starting to creep up on her again. She bit her lip and turned teary eyes to him.
"Can I have your jacket please?"
He gently squeezed her hand and then stood up, leaving her behind. He was quick to come back, suit jacket in hand. Mirai held it out to her and she, though embarrassed, was quick to accept it and put it on, huddling into it and even trying to completely hide herself into it. She just wanted to block out the world, bury herself into the comforting sense of Mirai's jacket.
A gentle tap to the top of her head made her tiredly peek out of it to see Mirai watching her carefully.
"Would you like to rest on my couch while I work?"
Considering it, she tentatively nodded. "I don't want to be alone," she whispered, curling in on herself.
He nodded and stood up, grasping his coffee mug and reaching for her tea. He led the way and she trailed after him like a lost duckling. When they finally reached his office, he set her tea down on the coffee table and she shuffled over to the couch to sit down on it. Mirai went to his desk and set his mug next to him while he focused back on his laptop.
For a few moments, as she sipped at her tea, she watched him work quietly. The tapping of the keys of his laptop was rhythmic and lulled her to a sleepier state. She felt herself begin to nod off, so she laid down on the couch and let herself close her eyes. It wasn't long until she fell asleep, still ensconced in Mirai's jacket.
Mirai glanced over to Izuku, finding her sleeping on his couch. He finished up his work on his laptop, draining the last dregs of his coffee, before he shut it down and closed it. Taking his mug, he went over and grabbed her tea and set off back for the break room, where he cleaned up their dishes.
While he hand-washed them, he thought about the current circumstances. Izuku still didn't want anyone knowing about her pregnancy, which would lead to them tiptoeing and trying to keep things quiet, even around their coworkers. It wasn't ideal but it was doable. That was especially so, since she would now be staying with him at the Agency.
It wasn't going to be able to last forever though. She would have to go back to school after the work study was done, maybe even before then for tests or other assignments, and their strange behavior was bound to make the others they worked with curious and want to question them.
That wasn't even taking into account that, because of her condition, she was going to be having a hard time not exposing herself. Her symptoms and the fact that eventually she was going to start showing, meant that they couldn't actually keep her pregnancy hidden forever.
Loud noises made him become alert and he moved away from the sink quickly, grabbing a knife as he went to check it out. He cautiously headed out and kept silent as he tracked down the disturbance, only to drop the knife as he found it was Izuku, meandering about in a hunched matter.
"Izuku? What're you —"
The loud retching sound she made as she lurched forward let him know the problem, and he launched himself forward to dive by her side and steady her, holding her up and leaning her against him as he helped her towards what he now saw was the direction of the restrooms.
He should've reminded her of and shown her his private bathroom in the attached room to his office. She wouldn't have had to travel all this way —
Izuku made another retching sound and Mirai hurried them faster, reaching the women's restroom in time to rush to the first stall. She threw herself out of his arms and over the toilet, retching a few times before finally she began throwing up. He held her hair away, gathering the long tresses together and quickly braiding it, idly noting to himself that he should start carrying around a hair tie or at least a rubberband.
Izuku moaned loudly, whimpering as she tried to catch her breath. He rubbed her back gently to try soothing her, even as he was supporting her over the toilet.
"We might have some ginger chews or at least some ginger in the break room," he muttered. "It'll help the nausea and maybe keep you from throwing up."
If she had to throw up though…"There's a private bathroom in my bedroom," Mirai reminded her as he helped the exhausted girl up and flushed the toilet for her while she leaned against him. "It might be best if you stayed there for now. I can sleep on my couch."
"But that's your bed," she faintly protested.
"And I am lending it to you," he said plainly. "If you have an issue like this again, the bathroom will be closer to you. And staying on my couch means I can stay close at hand, in case you need something and be easier for you to reach while I can pay closer attention to you."
On second thought, this was indeed a better solution. Having her stay in his room meant that she had closer access to a bathroom, should she need to. Pregnancy meant a higher need to urinate and her morning sickness seemed to be particularly bad.
Having himself sleep on his couch in his office connected to where she was, meant that he was stationed even closer to her than previously planned. And that meant he'd be close by in case she needed him for whatever reason or that he could help her if something went wrong. It shaved off precious seconds.
"If you say so," she sighed, looking too worn out to protest anymore.
Mirai helped her over to the sink, where he waited for her to rinse out her mouth and splash water onto her face. Then he led her back to his office and showed her where his room was, leading her to the bed.
"Rest here; I'll go look around the break room for some ginger and bring you water," he said.
He tried not to take too long, finding a bag of ginger chews in one of the cupboards. He also grabbed a water bottle, before he made a quick trek to Izuku's assigned room. Seeing that she hadn't actually unpacked, he grabbed her bag and then finally made his way to his bedroom, where he saw Izuku tiredly leaning back against the headboard and staring blankly ahead.
"I brought your things as well," he let her know as he entered the room and set everything down.
She took the bottle and uncapped it, sipping some water before she took a ginger chew and put it in her mouth.
"I'm sorry," Izuku whispered.
Mirai inwardly sighed, reaching out to gently pat her head.
"No, I'm the one who's sorry."
Their new coexistence at the Agency didn't even last that long. Izuku began showing early and no amount of baggy clothing, that she wasn't even prone to wearing, was going to hide her pregnancy. It was just too noticeable.
So he called Toshinori.
"We have a problem," he muttered into his phone, eying a flustered Izuku shifting through his closet for a shirt to wear.
She had already outgrown the ones that had been brought over.
Mirai covered his phone and put it away from him, so that he could address her. "Take your time. I have to talk with the others and then I'll slip out for a bit to find you some maternity clothes."
Izuku turned to him, growing even more flustered as she held one of his old idol shirts. "Y-you don't have to do that, Mirai-san…"
He waved her off. "You don't have any functioning clothes you can wear. Mine may fit, but are too large and I'm sure not something you would want to wear all the time." Not that he minded lending her his clothes, if she wanted to just wear them. His shirts could fit, but then again none of his pants would.
He made a gesture to let her know he'd be back and left his office entirely, heading all the way to the guest rooms and slipping into a random one. Then he was back to talking to Toshinori.
"Mirai, Principal Nedzu is here as well. I'll put you on speaker phone, so he can hear and talk to you," Toshinori informed him.
"Hello, Sir Nighteye! I hear you have something to say about Midoriya-chan's pregnancy?"
Mirai told them the issue, letting them know that it wasn't feasible to hide the pregnancy with the way things were going with Izuku.
"She is too noticeably pregnant at the moment," he bit his lip, glancing at the door. "And just yesterday, Mirio-kun made an offhand comment, noting Midoriya-kun's growing appetite. It won't be long until someone puts things together and realizes that she's pregnant."
Toshinori was still quiet, but he heard Nedzu humming in thought. "I see…Yet, she's still not willing to let anyone know?"
"No, she's still reticent about even just informing those here," Mirai let them know. "It's not that she doesn't trust them, it's just that she isn't willing to be open about the pregnancy…especially on how it happened."
"I understand," Toshinori interjected sorrowfully. "Even around here, when she stops by, she isn't fully opening to her friends or even myself. At the moment, honestly, you are probably the closest person that she has by her side and that she's willing to talk to and be around."
"By necessity," he interjected, shuffling awkwardly.
Nedzu's thoughtful humming also was making him antsy.
"Midoriya-chan can have the option to temporarily spend the rest of her pregnancy in hiding, somewhere safe and quiet. Her condition won't allow for her to be able to be fully capable of protecting herself and fighting back, should the enemy find out about her and her condition. And as the current holder of One For All, that would be disastrous. She is also still not wanting anyone to know, so being kept away and hidden will help that. I also think, given how traumatic the situation that had gotten her pregnant in the first place, it would be a soothing, restful place for her to try to heal and recover from her trauma."
"That is ideal!" Toshinori eagerly approved. "Perhaps I can accompany her —"
"Unfortunately, Yagi, you must stay here. It would be suspicious for you to just go off and disappear, and many will question your absence. We do not want that to be connected to Midoriya-chan's missing presence."
"I can go with her," Mirai found himself volunteering. "I can continue to look after her."
The silence on the other end made him tense, but he staid his resolve. "I've been taking care of her and as Toshinori said, I'm probably the closest to her right now and she does stick around me more and talks to me. If we leave together, I can just make it a case of needing to go somewhere to collect information and evidence for cases that we're working on."
There were hushed whispers that made him agitated, but then Nedzu was speaking to him solemnly not too long after.
"Very well, Sir Nighteye. Settle your affairs —you and Midoriya-chan will be moving together soon."
