SPEECHLESS
Senior Year. The final year for the senior students of Caspar High. However, there was one Caspar High student who wasn't exactly thrilled that the high school year would soon be ending. She looked down at a letter in her hand and continued to look down.
Sam had opened the letter from the university she had applied for. The University of Florida. It was the same college her boyfriend Danny Fenton was going to attend, but it wasn't the only reason she wanted to go to the same college as him.
She had loved books, especially gothic novels and had always wanted to either become an English teacher or write her own books someday. Unfortunately, her parents had different plans for her. They basically had already went behind her back and got her into New York University to study business so she could basically take over the family business that her great grandfather started.
She couldn't count how many times she tried to speak to her parents about what she wanted, but each time she was silenced. Her parents practically have made her believe that she was better off seen and not heard when she was at home. Especially after they practically dismissed her this morning before she left for school.
SAM
Here comes a wave meant to wash me away
A tide that is taking me under
Broken again, left with nothing to say
She continued to look down at the letter and then looked at herself in the mirror.
My voice drowned out in the thunder
I can't cry and I can't start to crumble
Whenever they try, to shut me or cut me down
She headed outside and sat on the benches at the empty football field, looking over the fields of the school, debating on what she should do. Do as her parents had planned for her or finally speak up and tell them what she wanted, even if it means they might disown her.
I can't stay silent
Though they want to keep me quiet
And I tremble when they try it
All I know is I won't go speechless
She looked continued to look down at the letter in her hands, unaware that Danny had found her and walked up to sit next to her.
"Hey Sam." Danny said.
Sam slightly smiled and gave him a hug. She then looked back down and Danny noticed her sadness and asked, "Sam, what's wrong?"
Sam showed him the opened envelope and answered, "I got this letter this morning from the University of Florida. I got in the English and Literacy program Danny."
Danny smiled at her and said with excitement, "That's great Sam!"
Sam however continued to look down. He then asked carefully, "Isn't it?"
"Of course it's great for me and you, but to my parents….I haven't even told them about it and it seems they already have plans for me to go to New York and do what they want." Sam answered, beginning to rant and revealing her feelings. "But….it's like they never even asked what I wanted! I want to study English and become a teacher and even write my own books someday! I don't want to go into the family business! It's just isn't fair! It's like I'm seen and never heard!"
She panted deeply after her rant and all Danny could do was comfort her. He placed an arm around her shoulders and held her close as he said, "Sam…..I know what you're real passion is and it's time your parents knew that."
"That's what I'm scared of Danny. What if they…what if they decide that I'm not worth being part of the family anymore?" Sam asked.
"We will cross that bridge when we get to it. If they kick you out, then you can stay with me and my family and no matter what we have to do, I'll make sure you can fulfil your dreams and passion." Danny said in determination. "Don't go speechless Sam. Because that's the girl I fell in love with. The one who stuck by my side even after I got ghost powers and always taught me to never give up. No matter what happens, I will stay by your side. I promise."
Small tears fell from Sam's eyes as they both shared a passionate kiss. After they pulled apart, Danny asked, "Do you want me to be there?"
Sam shook her head and said, "Thanks Danny, but this is something I have to do on my own. I'll call you after I tell them I promise."
Danny nodded and then suggested, "At least, let me fly you home."
She nodded, agreeing to the suggestion and allowed her boyfriend to fly her home bridal style. After they landed at her front door, she took a deep breath and said, "Wish me luck."
"Good luck Sam." Danny said before giving her a kiss and then started heading for home.
Sam took another deep breath and opened the door, entering her home. She saw her parents and grandmother in the living room and went in there and began to speak, "Mum, dad I need to speak to you….."
But her father interrupted her and said, "Sam! Good news! NYU called and said that you can skip the whole graduation ceremony and attend early orientation."
That took Sam by surprise, but before she could speak, her mother cut in, "Oh and here's the best part! You'll have early access to your classes and practically move into your new dorm and begin your studies right away."
Sam shook her head and began to say, "But mum, dad! I had plans this summer with Danny and my other friends before college. I don't want to leave right now and I want to attend Caspar High in its last few weeks….."
Jeremy held his hand up and stopped her from continuing as he said, "Silence Samantha! It's for your own good and we know what's best for you. You are going to New York next week so I suggest you forget about your friends and that freakish boyfriend of yours and that's final."
"Just head up to your room. Now!" Pamela said and went back to her book.
Ida looked at Sam with sympathy and watched as the eighteen year old began to head to her room. She suddenly stopped at the stairs and looked back at her parents in the living room and looked down as they once again silenced her. That's when she suddenly felt an urge of courage start to build inside of her.
SAM
Written in stone. Every rule, every word
Centuries old and unbending
Stay in your place, better seen and not heard
Well now that story is ending
Cause I, I cannot start to crumble
So come on and try. Try to shut me and cut me down
Time seemed to freeze as Sam turned around and went back to living room, deciding this time she wasn't going to stay silent and tell her parents exactly what she wanted for once in her life.
I won't be silenced!
You can't keep me quiet
Won't tremble when you try it
All I know is I won't go speechless
Speechless!
She had thought back to all the times her parents tried to force her to be the daughter they wanted her to be, but most times in her life she managed to rebel against them and now, it was time to show them who she really was.
Let the storm in
I cannot be broken
No I won't live unspoken
Cause I know that I won't go speechless
She looked at her grandmother and smiled a little as she had known, her grandmother had always supported her and allowed her to be who she was.
Try to lock me in this cage
I won't just lay me down and die
I will take these broken wings and watch me burn across the sky
Hear the echoes saying I
Won't be silenced!
Though you want to see me tremble when you try it
All I know is I won't go speechless
Speechless!
Cause I'll breathe when they try to suffocate me
Don't you underestimate me
Cause I know that I won't go speechless
All I know is I won't go speechless
Speechless!
Time resumed and Sam found herself still at the stairs. She then walked back into the living room and began to speak, "Mum, dad, I have something to say and this time, you two have to listen to me."
Her parents were absolutely taken back and were about to protest when Ida demanded of them, "Let your daughter speak!"
Not wanting to make Ida upset, Jeremy and Pamela remained silent and allowed Sam to talk. Sam took a deep breath and began, "I don't want to go to New York and I don't want to study business. My real passion is English and writing and someday, I want to be an English teacher or even write my own books. So….I'm going to the University of Florida to study both. You both can't force me to be the person you want me to be and it's time I spoke up. This is who I am and you can't change that and if you both love me enough, you'll both accept that and allow me to live my own dreams instead of yours."
Pamela and Jeremy were completely taken back and both frowned at their daughter's defiance. Jeremy was the first one to speak, "Samantha, I don't know where this defiance came from, but you will not be going to Florida."
"Yes I am dad! And no matter what you both do to me, I will go." Sam retorted back.
"There's no way that we will allow our daughter to become something so low as a writer or an English teacher. It's…..it's absolutely ridiculous!" Pamela snapped.
"Well I for one support Sam's decision. I think it's a fantastic dream and passion." Ida spoke, smiling proudly at Sam.
"Well we don't mother!" Jeremy disagreed. "And you Samantha have now two choices, either follow the path we want for you or leave this house and don't come back."
"So choose now!" Pamela demanded.
Sam was silent. She had a feeling that her parents would do this, but never thought they would actually do it.
Sam glared at her parents however and already knew her choice, "Then I guess I'm leaving. If you can't support me, then I'll leave."
"Fine. But don't think we'll be paying for your college expenses young lady." Jeremy said.
Ida then smirked and said, "Oh you won't have to! Because all these years I have been saving money into an account for Sam and there is plenty in there for her to pay for her college years."
"But mother….." Jeremy protested.
"Be silent son! This is my decision and since you two won't help your own daughter, then I'll do it as I've always had done." Ida said as she moved beside Sam.
She smiled at her granddaughter and said, "I'm so proud of you Bubelah."
Sam smiled back and hugged her grandmother and then left to pack her bags to leave. Ida then looked at Jeremy and said, "I am so disappointed in you my son. This is not the man I raised you to be. I will be contacting my solicitor in the morning to have my will changed."
"What do you mean mother?" Jeremy asked, confused.
"I mean is that I will be changing the will so that when I pass away, everything I own and all my money will go to Sam and Sam only." Ida said.
"But mother you can't….." Jeremy began to protest, but Ida cut in, "I can and I will."
Danny opened the door and saw Sam standing there with her bags. She hugged him and said, "I did it Danny. I'm free."
"I'm so proud of you Sam and you can stay with me and my family for as long as you want." Danny said, hugging her back.
Next Fall…..
Sam and Danny stood in front of the campus of the University of Florida as freshman. Even though Sam's parents still weren't speaking to her or even acknowledging her, she was happy that her grandmother came with the Fenton's to see her and Danny off to college.
This was it. She finally felt free to follow her own dreams and no longer speechless.
