14. Aftermath

I threw myself to my feet, breathing heavily, my dilated eyes darting around frantically in search of danger. My shoulder burned, and I bit back a whimper. The shadows calmed me down somewhat, but my heart still raced, far faster than was normal.

"Callie?" A confused, but deliberately calm voice asked.

My panicked gaze fell on Annabeth, who looked like she'd just gotten up. She rubbed her eyes rapidly.

"Are you alright?"

I could see her frown in the sparse dawn light, and I mutedly shook my head, shaking uncontrollably. The adrenaline was finally starting to wear off, and I collapsed to the ground, covering my face in my hands as I sobbed quietly.

The tears came flooding out, suppressed in fear since who knew how long. "I don't understand what's going on!" I whimpered. My eyes flicked around wildly. "The stars — that pit — the woman — "

"Shh," Annabeth soothed, rubbing my back comfortingly, but all I could think was, this wasn't how Bianca did it.

The thought only made me cry harder.

"It's okay," the older girl muttered in my ear. She sounded so utterly sad, and defeated. "I know you're scared. It's alright. Being a demigod means that we sometimes get horrible, terrible visions while we sleep. I know how you feel."

I breathed in, trembling like a leaf. "I just want to find my brother and sister."

"I know. And I'm sorry, but we can't do anything right now. The others are coming to rescue us. We just have to sit tight, alright? I'll take care of you."

I searched Annabeth's eyes desperately, my fear fading slightly. This girl had saved my life before, who was I to question her abilities?

"Really?" I pressed, wanting confirmation.

The older girl gave me a determined smile, nodding firmly.

"Really. I promise."

I breathed out in relief after what felt like centuries, swallowing.

"Okay."

I trusted her.
