The morning ritual — the usual. Getting out of your bed, dressing yourself up and eating until leaving for school. For May it seemed like any ordinary day. With her eyes fixated on the oncoming traffic she was in the train, as usual.
She was pondering about stuff that happened in the past, more specifically with Drew. She'd grown fond feelings of him, probably after seeing how soft and caring he could get if he wasn't in the usual sassy and confident attitude. They had shared several kisses by now, though only one on the lips.
Did he feel the same? At this point she couldn't even tell. He had pestered her a lot, but had been so kind at the same time. But who knew, maybe he was playing a game on her. Though she started trusting Drew more and more she was still a tad bit cautious; unlike most of the other students in the school she hadn't known him for long.
She let out a long sigh before sliding her hand under her chin to lean on it, still absentmindedly gazing out the window. The cold weather had become more permanent now, the sky often cloudy, and if not it'd be freezing outside either way. but she couldn't deny that she liked it.
Her eyebrows lifted as the train came to a stop; the view in front of her being the same like every other day. She grabbed her bag that was standing in front of her feet and wrapped it around her shoulders, ready to leave the train. Making sure not to bump into anyone, she cautiously exited the train.
As soon as she had stepped out a raindrop fell on top of her head. She squinted before pulling her head back up, observing as the dark grey skies flew over the skies. She fumbled for her bag again to hold it over her head before shifting her walk into a run, wanting to make it safe to school as quick as possible.
As soon as she had made it to the school building she made a quick sprint to the doors, letting out a sigh in relief as soon as she no longer felt raindrops shatter on her locks. She quickly ran the tops of her fingers through her hair, shaking any remaining droplets out.
'What's up with the rain?' She murmured in annoyance, her eyelid twitching in irritation. She lift her head back up, and the halls were surprisingly quiet for a morning like this. She had heard from Brianna that a few classes had gone on some activities — which might've explained the empty halls.
Was Drew at school? She almost hoped so. He must be. At least, he's in her class and their mentor did not inform them about going on any activities. Unless she was a klutz and missed an announcement of any activity altogether? Anxiety filled her stomach as she made her way through the halls.
She had still plenty of time left before her next class was going to start. If anything she had planned to get to school a tad bit earlier so she could turn in some books she had borrowed from the library. With her bag over her shoulder she made her way to the staircase.
She almost fumbled over the stairs before she had made it to the second floor, slightly panting. She lazily trotted over to the library, barely not noticing one of the books slipping out of her bag. Slightly started she turned around to pick it up, but was surprised when someone else had done it for her.
Her breath temporarily hitched in her throat upon seeing the boy before her. The face wasn't one to forget, as she let her lips part in surprise. '...Brendan?' She mustered in surprise, the boy in front of her looking just as surprised as she was. '...May?' He mused before the corner of his lip tugged itself into a smile. 'It's you!'
May couldn't believe her eyes. 'Brendan! I had no clue you attended here, I—-' she started, cut off by Brendan's chuckle. 'I didn't know you attended here, either! I've only joined this school recently, though...' He admitted, shyly scratching his neck. 'But it's mid school year!' She gawked in surprise.
'...Yeaaah,' He sighed to himself, a klutzy smile still present on his lips. 'You see, awhile back my mother lost her job... and she found a new one here nearby, so she desperately wanted to move here.' he explained, gently pressing May's book back into her hands. 'I thought getting used to this school would be a nightmare, but I'm relieved knowing you attend here, too!'
May smiled widely. 'I'm so happy getting to see you again! I mean— how long has it been since we've seen each other?' She pondered, pressing her free finger to her lip. 'I'm sure it's been a year or two, three maybe?' he guessed wildly, '...so a long while.' He grinned sheepishly.
'...Um, so I take it you're here to turn in your book?' He assumed, tilting his head slightly in a curious manner. May nodded immediately. 'Yep! If i didn't turn it today, I'd probably get a fine...' She confessed. 'It's been laying around at my place for way too long. I almost forgot I had to turn it in.'
Brendan broke out in a fit of soft laughter. 'You're kidding, you forgot? You're still the old forgetful klutz I know.' He said teasingly, adjusting his beanie. '...I'm not that bad of a klutz,' May retorted shyly, 'Well— I would be if I don't turn it in right now!' She swiftly turned around to make her way to the reception.
'Wait, May!' Brendan stopped her, as May reflexively looked behind her shoulder. 'Hm?' She murmured absentmindedly. '—Maybe you should close your bag now? Or else do you want anything else dropping out?' He jested, as May went slightly red in the face. '...Oh! Right!' She reached for the zip on the bag.
'Like I said, you're a little forgetful.' Brendan laughed as May sweatdropped. 'Okay.., I get it...' she mused, before her eyes slightly widened. '...I forgot to ask, what're you here in the library for?' She inquired with a furrowed eyebrow. 'What do you think?' He snickered. 'I'm here to pick a book, duh.'
May let out a soft pout. 'Ah, right. Could've guessed.. well, gotta turn my book in now! See ya, Brendan!' She chimed, pumping her fists before turning around and walking to the reception. Brendan happily waved her bye before searching for a book on his own.
May slid her book over the desk to smile at the receptionist who, when caught her smile, smiled back at her. 'Hi! I'm here to turn in my book,' she said shyly. The receptionist gave an approving nod and took the book before scanning it's barcode. 'Thank you for turning it back in. Glad you managed to turn it in today, eh?' The receptionist jested playfully.
May let out a half-hearted laugh. 'Well, I can't get a fine or my parents would kill me..' she huffed, giving the receptionist a crooked smile. 'Makes sense.' The receptionist giggled. 'You need anything else?' She inquired, leaning on her hand. 'Nope, that was everything— have a great day!' She waved off the receptionist.
However she was startled when all of a sudden Brianna was standing behind her. 'Ack! Oh! Brianna!' She murmured in surprise after regaining her composure. 'Hey!' Brianna greeted her happily, the corners of her lips tugged into a wide smile.
May rose her eyebrows. 'You look awfully happy today, what's up?' she asked curiously, slightly letting her head sink. Brianna went red in the face. 'Oh, I can't tell you!' She panicked, squeezing her eyes shut. May felt some unexplainable worry fill her stomach. '...What?' Only one thought came to mind. What if Drew— no, he wasn't the reason. It would make no sense for her to be jealous.
'...Tell me!' May giggled, trying to mask her worry, leaning in to discreetly look Brianna in the eyes. Brianna leaned in to whisper into her ear. 'I've... got a new crush...' she whispered in embarrassment, though she sounded rather excited. 'You've.. got a new what?' She chirped in surprise, talking a little louder than she was supposed to.
'Ssssh!' Brianna hissed into her ear before May shielded her mouth with her hand. 'But what about Drew?' She asked in curiosity, furrowing her eyebrows. '...Drew? Well, I still really like him.. I know he's sooo cute and all, but I realize I had absolutely no chances with him.' She grinned. 'But does that matter? I found someone new and he's so...'
May looked into her eyes. Ever since the rumor went around that Drew had a girlfriend, she had become extremely distant from him.
May blinked. '...Who is it?' she questioned, wondering if she'd ever seen him around before. Brianna let out a silent squeal before pointing at a random bookshelf in the library. And, unexpectedly, the one standing before it was the very Brendan she had bumped into. '...Wait, you like Brendan..?' May whispered.
Brianna's eyes flew wide open. 'What, you know him?!' She squealed inwardly — trying to keep her voice low — they were in a library and any loud noise wasn't appreciated. '...Yeah! We used to share the same school when we were little .. I bumped into him earlier and he said he had moved here.' May retorted, and Brianna for a second looked a little uneasy.
'You don't like him, do you?' She asked, her eyebrows furrowing into a frown. 'Huh? Me? No way, not like that!' May grinned awkwardly, cringing a little at the thought of them being .. well, a thing. 'He's just a good friend of mine!' She protested, waving her hands dismissively.
Brianna perked up, her worried frown disappearing as soon as it had come. '...Would you mind introducing me to him...?' she whispered quietly. 'Considering you're his friend, and all..' she grimaced sheepishly, looking at her with puppy eyes. 'Sure! I'm sure he'd love to get to know you!'
Brianna's weak grin shifted into a wide one has a spark of excitement filled her eyes. 'How about I introduce you to him during break? I'm sure he'd like to sit at our table. And you guys can immediately go chat,' she grinned. 'Yes, please!' Brianna giggled in excitement. 'Thank you thank you thank you thank you!' She thanked as quiet as she could, reaching in for a hug. 'Of course.'
May happily marched through the halls, feeling a little more relieved knowing that Brianna was stepping down from trying to talk with Drew again. As selfish as it sounded, she liked it better this way. And Brianna having feelings for her childhood friend, Brendan, felt even better. He had always been a bit alone, so some extra friends for him would definitely be a good thing.
She reached for the doors handle, just to shyly open the door and peek into the classroom. She was a little early, but wasn't surprised to see Drew sitting on his place. He turned to face her as soon as she had opened the door. 'Hey, May,' He hummed calmly, his voice dipped in amusement. 'Hi, Drew!' May greeted him, closing the door behind her.
Making her way to her seat she sat down, sighing. She was still a little exhausted — sleeping wasn't easy when she constantly had to think about the previous incident with Drew. 'Tired?' Drew inquired, leaning over the table to look at May. May nodded her head in acknowledgment. 'Yeah.' She grinned.
Drew kept his eyes on May. 'I wonder...' he muttered under his breath, on accident a bit louder than he was supposed to. 'Hm?' May hummed, her eyebrows lifting in curiosity. She hadn't even noticed that Drew's gaze that was previously on her eyes had dwindled down to her lips. 'Oh, nothing.' He grinned.
Catching his grin, May felt as if May had said or done something stupid. '...What?' She hissed quietly, trying not to burst with rage and irritation because of his wide smirk. '...I said it was nothing,' he excused himself, lightly chuckling under his breath. 'It's not important at all~' He murmured in a sing-song voice, causing for May to bawl her fists.
'You little...' May tried, but was cut off once the door opened again. A teacher stepped in with their bag over their shoulder. 'Oh, hello!' The teacher greeted them with a kind smile before placing their bag beside their chair. 'A little early as usual, hm?' the teacher sung happily, placing down their cup of tea on their desk.
'Ehe, yeah.' Drew answered calmly, suddenly sounding more innocent than ever. 'Some silence in a classroom is always something to enjoy.' He smiled fakely, which the teacher assumed it was a genuine smile, though May knew deep down he was still inwardly smirking about whatever she'd done.
'Yeaaaah..' May smirked back, though she had the urge to walk up to Drew and give him a full lecture about having to stop teasing her 24/7. When the teacher wasn't looking she caught a wink from Drew, as right that moment she knew their rivalry would never really end.
heyy! I know this chapter isnt all too contestshippy, but the next one will be. I wanted to get this one out of the way just for the purpose of the plot :)
