They had docked on the shores of the island not even four hours ago. The rest of the crew had gone off their separate ways, Rina had been asked by Banshee to pick up a few non fish related foods that she would, or a better word would be could, eat. Ace had offered to tag along with her in case she needed help carrying some things. Banshee, herself, had headed off towards the market to get ingredients for the rest of the crew. Rina was currently dressed blue jeans and a red tank top, the same red scarf around her neck. Ace was wearing his usual, yellow button down shirt that was open with the black shorts, boots, the two belts, and the hat.
They hadn't quite reached the market yet but he realized he hadn't asked her an important question. Ace looked to Rina and inquired, "how many berries do you have?"
"We haven't gotten to the market to look at the fruit yet," Rina replied. Ace blinked before looking to the silvery blonde. His left eyebrow was raised and he blurted out, "where the hell are you from?"
"Definitely not there," Rina replied, evading giving the actual answer. Ace ran a hand over his face as he pulled out a few berries from his shorts pocket and showed them to Rina.
He then repeated, "These berries. How much do you have?"
"Oh—I umm—I don—I don't have any," she stammered, finally understanding the meaning behind what he was asking.
'Ah geez. Is this gonna be a shop and dash? That'll mean we have to get to the ship quickly and set sail—the rest of the crew are off getting their own supplies too. We can't really do that and leave our men behind,' Ace worried to himself.
However his worry soon faded when Rina unclasped a white gold bracelet, lavishly dusted with pink gemstones. His eyes widened at the sight of the jewelery. Rina gave him an assuring smile as she explained, "but, I did bring this along. Think we could find somewhere to sell it for some berries?"
Ace quickly clasped his hand over the hand that held the bracelet and shoved said hand into her pants pocket, concealing the valuable item from bystanders. His eyes surveyed the area trying to spot anyone who may have seen the item and when he was convinced they were safe he nodded, "yeah. I think there's a few jewelers here if I'm remembering right."
'Geez! She's almost as bad as Luffy, but in a completely different way! Glad I decided to tag along with her,' He inwardly screamed.
"So tell me about your siblings," he proposed as they walked.
"Hmm? Why?"
He almost laughed as he pointed out, "I told you about my brothers. Only fair I know about your siblings, wouldn't you say?"
"Valid point," Rina conceded. She took a deep breath and began explaining how she was born five minutes after her twin brother. They might be twins, but he likes rubbing in her face that he was born first anytime he gets protective of her. Like he somehow feels he needs an extra reason aside from just being a caring sibling. Ace laughed, admitting that if he did have a sister, older or younger, he would've been judging every single guy that came within arms reach of her. He also would've made sure to stay within earshot if he didn't have a good feeling about them.
She then went on to talk about her four younger brothers, who were all adopted by her mom initially. Her Dad eventually got on board with there being adopted kids in the family. Not that he had much say since he was gone for most of her childhood and only reappeared in the last four years, which resulted in her youngest sibling, her only sister. Since then her parents had decided to call it quits for good on their relationship but still co-parented all seven of them. They tended to split their time between their mom and dad.
Her twin brother, Yoshiya, took after their parents. He was a science fanatic and pursued it as a career. The next kid after her, Toru, was more of the artsy type. He enjoyed cooking, baking, playing guitar and wrote song lyrics as a hobby. The next boy, Hiroshi, was athletic and part of a Futsal team back home. The next in age was Daichi, who was notorious for his pranks. Even going as far as to prank her mom's boss! Supposedly this was a very proud man who didn't take too kindly to playful chaos, even though in his youth, he was known for being quite a handful himself. The youngest boy was Kenta, he would train with swords all day every day if their parents let him. Then there was her little sister Sora, who liked helping their mother in the garden and swimming, usually with Toru, Yoshiya or herself observing her for safety. And what was her interest? All she wanted was to be happy, and if she had a chance to help people along the way that was even better.
At this Ace began walking backwards in front of her so he could face her while he probed, "why do you say you want to be happy? I mean—did you always feel that way or did something happen?"
"I'm not quite ready to discuss that," she answered truthfully. Ace gave a nod of his head in acknowledgement and resumed walking normally. He located the shop and grasped Rina's wrist as he playfully pulled her into the shop. Once they were in it was as if Rina became a recluse, trying to make herself vanish from everyone's sight. Ace walked over to the shop keep and asked if he bought jewelery. The man hesitated before affirming that he did. Rina then discreetly brought the bracelet forward. The man's eyes widened as he inspected the bracelet, finding every bit of it to be genuine.
He looked to Rina and inquired, "this is a very valuable piece of jewelery miss. Why do you wish to part with it?"
"I'm not from around here—something happened I—I likely wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for my friend here," she lied, tears welling up in her eyes, making them glossy.
Ace was a bit alarmed, she was a good actress… almost too good. She continued to spin her story of how she'd had to leave with nothing but the clothes on her back and that piece of jewelery was the only thing she could grab before fleeing her family home. It pained her to part with it, but she needed some money so she could rebuild her life. Before Ace knew it the guy was handing them eighty million berries.
He had to restrain himself to keep his eyes from popping out of their sockets. Where the hell would a girl he met in some hole in the wall bar and grill have acquired one item worth so much?
