Emily stared Jazz and then at Dr. Roberts with an offended look on her face. What kind of question was that? Not only was it rude but it was completely out of the blue. Annoyance bubbled up in her chest and she frowned. "That's a personal question. You don't see me asking why you're here or why there was a bad cop with red eyes kidnapping me." The amputee crossed her arms and looked at Dr. Roberts skeptically, who paused in checking Emily's pulse. There was a thick tension in the air. Silence surrounded them and Jay glanced at the medic, sharing a concerned expression. After about a minute of silence, the doctor spoke. "That police car is...someone we know but he isn't a friend of ours. We call him Barricade." he explained.
She shuddered, thinking back to earlier and what she saw. The cruiser transforming into something else. Was that real? Was it a dream? Had she been seeing things? Why had he taken her? Was he going to do to her? What if Jay hadn't seen her-
"Em! Easy girlie." Jay's voice snapped Emily out of her thoughts. She jumped, looking at the African-American man kneeling in front of her. Dr. Roberts held her wrist and was listening to her pulse, frowning in worry. "Your heart rate is climbing again. Take some deep breaths for me." he instructed to Emily, who nodded a little and sucked in some air before letting it back out. Almost immediately, her worry melted away. Emily watched the doc as he continued to monitor her. By now, the girl was able to take in her current surroundings as she looked around. They had stopped at a small abandoned rest area outside the city where they came from. It was then that Emily noticed a black pick up truck and Peterbilt truck parked nearby the silver Pontiac and ambulance in the parking lot.
Had they always been there? She didn't notice them before. "Who else is here?" Emily asked Jay, eyeing the two unknown vehicles as she leaned away from Dr. Roberts suspiciously. Jay glanced back and followed her gaze. "Oh. Those are our friends. Orion and Ian." He explained. "Orion is our leader in a way. They were with us when we saved you." Emily frowned in thought. Why were they all here then if there was only one bad guy? That didn't sit well with Emily and she began standing up.
"Well, thank you for saving me and all but I really need to get going." the girl said, spotting her bag on the floor beside her. Her hand found the strap and she peaked inside, making sure her parents' photo was still inside. A sigh of relief escaped her lips. It was. Thank god. "What do ya mean? You're going back out there? It's not safe." Jay replied with concern in his voice, his body turning as he watched the 15 year old stand and dawn her backpack. He reached out, his hand gently grabbing Emily's arm causing her to stop.
"Wait, wait!"
"What? I've survived on my own for months! Besides, why should you care?" Emily pulled away from Jay. Emily's question was met with silence as Jay and Dr. Roberts exchanged a look. The medic sighed and spoke up. "It's not that we don't care, Emily. It's just that we know what's out there and we don't want you to get hurt. You're safe here with us." Emily rolled her eyes. "I'm not a child. I can take care of myself." she retorted, adjusting her bag on her shoulder. Jay shook his head. "You don't know what you're up against. Those things are dangerous. You saw what Barricade did to you." Emily flinched at the mention of the police car. She didn't want to think about that. It was too terrifying.
"I don't know what you're talking about. That was just a regular cop car." she said, trying to downplay what she had seen. Dr. Roberts sighed again. "Emily, we're not going to force you to stay here, but please, at least think about what we're saying. You don't have to go back out there on your own." Emily looked at the two men standing in front of her, trying to decide what to do. She didn't want to be a bother, but also didn't want to be in danger.
"Well, I was in the library and then I got chased by men in black but that's none of your business." Emily replied with a frown. Dr. Roberts glanced at the girl, a hint of annoyance in his tone now. "Youngling, I-" he began but Jay interrupted, placing a hand on his shoulder. Emily raised a brow in confusion. Youngling? Is that a word for a kid? "She doesn't trust us, man. Go easy on her." He said and the doctor let out a sigh of annoyance. "Fine. Then you talk to her. Let me get something from my vehicle to fix that prosthetic." he waved Jay off as he put his equipment away, standing up straight. He walked off to the parked ambulance and climbed inside to look for something. Jay turned to Emily and smiled. "Don't mind 'im. He's stuck in the medbay a lot." he chuckled as he leaned against the table where they had been sitting. Emily watched Jay like a hawk, as if she was expecting him to whip out his phone and call the authorities after what she had done with his wallet a few days prior.
His electric blue eyes scanned the 15-year-old. She was on edge, and he didn't blame her. If she was living on the streets, they had to go about this delicately. "Listen, Em," he began. "It's Emily. No one but my dad called me that." She said firmly. He blinked in surprise, pausing as he tried to find words. He then managed to nod in understanding. "Sorry, Emily. What happened a few days ago is in the past, ah'right? No hard feelings, ok? I ain't gonna snitch on you. If I did, I would have done it but I gave ya your jacket back and saved ya from Barricade." Jay pointed out, listing each point off with his fingers. Emily's posture relaxed slightly, realizing he was right. "Let's do this: you can ask me a question, I answer it and then I ask you one and you answer it." he suggested, gesturing to her and then himself. It did seem fair since they both had questions that needed answers. She nodded a little.
"Alright. How was it that you were nearby when that cop car got me?"
"Right place, right time I guess." Jay shrugged. "Why are you runnin' away if you're supposed to be with your family?" he asked, taking a crumpled missing person poster from his pocket. He held it up for Emily to see.
Emily Whitefield Missing since 11/17/2005 from her home...
"Shit..." Emily muttered under her breath. Every fiber in her being was yelling at her to get up and run so that Jay and no one else would bring her back. Her eyes glanced around for an escape route. "Emily?" Jay's voice asked, frowning in worry when he noticed Emily clench her bag straps tightly. "Why are you out in the streets by yourself and not with your family or somethin'?" "That is NOT my family." she muttered, looking away from her picture on the poster. "What do you mean?" Jay asked and Emily glared at him. "I mean they're NOT my family. They're my foster family. I didn't like how they treated me, and I wanted to find out about what happened to my parents. Happy?" She snapped. Jay flinched ever so slightly at her response but that was it. Obviously, he wasn't expecting that, but he wasn't too surprised.
There was an awkward silence between the pair. Five agonizing minutes before Emily heard a deep voice behind her, making her jump. "I believe that is enough questioning, Jay." She turned and saw an older man standing next to the Peterbilt truck. He had a short beard, a cowboy hat, jeans and a red flannel. He also had the same piercing blue eyes like Jay and Dr. Roberts. Why did they all have them? The man watched Emily as Jay grew quiet and sighed.
The older man stood up straight and approached Emily, who leaned away. "At ease, young one. My name is Orion." He held out a hand for her to shake. She hesitantly took his hand and when she did, she almost pulled away in shock. Orion's hand had almost no body temperature. She stared up at him, Orion holding a kind look in his eyes and face.
Who exactly are these guys? Emily thought.
