Ruby, Rouge and Tails quickly closed in on Omega and Cinder. The Fall Maiden, despite appearing dazed from Omega's punch, managed to focus her magic and send a signal to her storm cloud on the ceiling. Lightning rained down. Rouge and Ruby dodged while Omega simply absorbed them. Strom appeared from the Double-Wispon and repeated Omega´s action to help Tails out and replenish their own energy reserves.
Oh no, you won't cheat like this anymore, Cinder thought to herself at the sight. She created a spear and threw it at Tails. Rouge, however, flew in front of the fox and kicked the glass weapon aside. Several bolts of lightning cascaded down at her, but Strom and Omega flew above her, shielding her. The latter then retracted his claws and extended his cannons. Cinder expected the combat robot and Lightning Wisp to attack her foolishly with electricity, but instead Strom disappeared back into Tail's weapon while Omega fired shots with regular metal bullets.
Cinder created sabers in each of her hands and heated them as much as possible. She slashed and blocked with the blades in front of her. The Cyborg Maiden was able to cut through many of the bullets, but others shattered the glass of the blades when they hit the weapons at an unfavorable angle or when the black-haired woman held the blades horizontally in front of her as a shield. She was constantly creating new sabers to withstand the constant barrage of shots, which kept her full attention on this activity. Cinder didn't notice Ruby racing towards her until it was too late.
The silver-eyed girl had one of her hands in her pocket where she was storing her Chaos Emerald. The closer she got to Cinder, the more energy she drew from the white crystal. But she tried not to let its power and her own negative emotions towards the twisted Fall Maiden overwhelm her. Instead, she focused on what she was trying to achieve here.
Protect my friends from this deranged monster, win this war and return home to my family. I was to late for Pyrrha and couldn't to anything for Penny but this time…
The Chaos Emerald glowed and Ruby felt the power surge trough her.
…thing are different!
Cinder´s mechanical eye briefly twitched to Ruby and alarmed the Cyborg Maiden about the approaching enemy. One of her hands dissolved its saber and aimed a glowing palm at her. But Ruby already had blitzed behind her with a raised scythe. The powerful attack send Cinder reeling on her back with her Aura strongly flickering.
This attack again! She had already used it against me in Metropolis to do the exact same thing! That gem the fox had thrown to her before our battle begun… she must be using the power of a Chaos Emerald.
The pyromaniac was getting back on her feet, flames licking her fingertips.
Even if the Doctor will take it away later from me, it´s still better to have such power in his grasp instead of a childish enemy that wants to play hero.
But as Cinder was ready to reduce her enemy to ash, she felt the hairs on her neck stand up as the air filled with static.
The tin can!, Cinder realized. When Ruby had made her attack against the Cyborg Maiden, Omega had stopped his fire so as not to harm her with his shots. But then, when Cinder turned her back to him to attack the fifteen-year-old, the combat robot fired electrical projectiles to catch Cinder off guard.
Unfortunately, she managed to do a side roll and dodged the shots. But Rouge and Tails flew towards her. Cinder threw fireballs at the duo and the flyers dodged them in the air. Ruby tried to surprise Cinder with another scythe strike, but one of the Cyborg Maiden's arms pointed at her and a wall of fire erupted between the two fighters from Remnant, sending Ruby stumbling back. Tails and Rouge meanwhile had gotten closer, but Cinder then increased the heat and size of her flames.
One would have managed to graze Tails and inflict severe burns on him, but Flare took a cue from their sibling and appeared to render this element of the twisted Fall Maiden harmless to Tails as well. Rouge, on the other hand, had taken out one of her heart bombs and thrown it in Cinder's direction. Unsurprisingly, when it collided with one of the fireballs, an explosion resulted. The loud crash made everyone's ears ring, especially the mobians. But they didn't let that stop them. Tails came shooting out of the smoke as a Spindash. Cinder raised several hands and shot a jet of flame at the rotating sphere... but it continued its flight closer to her unharmed!
In sheer surprise, Cinder let herself be hit. Tails bounced off her and then performed several homing attacks before unfurling and knocking the pyromaniac aside with his namesakes. The fire wall died out and Ruby ran to her friends side, who had landed on the ground. She saw Flare clinging to the mobians fur, having used the smoke screen to attach themselves onto the fox.
"Oh, so that was why you could Spindash trough Cinder´s fire attack." Her eyes narrowed. "You gave me a lecture about being reckless and yet proceed to do a maneuver like that! If everything didn't happen so quick before I could process stuff, I would have had a heart attack!"
Tails chuckled and sheepishly rubbed the back of his head.
"Well… if you put it like that-"
He was interrupted by burning arrows being fired towards them. Omega landed in front of them and used his broad, metallic frame as a shield for the duo. Cinder prepared another set of arrows for her bows. Rouge tried to stop her with more heart bombs, the Cyborg Maiden however just dissolved some of her weapons and used the now free arms to produce a gust of wind and direct the explosive back at the bat. Rouge dove underneath them and let them detonate above her. The blast from the explosions sent her hurtling downward even faster, but before she hit the ground, she spread her wings and flew, landing behind Omega as well for protection from Cinder's arrows.
"So, how should we proceed next?" asked the bat. Ruby and Tails thought about it. Unfortunately, they couldn't come up with a correct answer as the ground beneath the group began to glow.
"Quick, get out of here!" Ruby shouted. She ran away with her Semblance while the mobians and Omega flew away. The glowing spot where they were just standing exploded in a huge column of fire. But it didn't stop there. Several spots on the entire hall floor glowed while the storm clouds rumbled with thunder.
Not this again, Ruby thought to herself as she dodged the pillars of fire and lightning. She noticed too late how these attacks specifically separated her from the others. As soon as she was alone, Cinder came flying towards her. Winds, flames, and small bolts of lightning enveloped her as she swooped toward her prey like a merciless hawk.
She crashed into the ground with an explosion. She rose from the smoking crater, the metal around her and beneath her warped and melted by heat, covered in a film of ash from burnt rose petals. Standing several meters in front of the twisted Fall Maiden was Ruby, hand gripping her Chaos Emerald. With its power, she and Petal Burst were fast enough to avoid the attack. Which didn't mean she was out of danger.
Cinder stepped out of the crater and formed sabers in two of her hands. The rest were busy directing attacks that kept Ruby's allies at a distance between the two Remnant fighters.
"You and the others talk so much about friendship, how great it is. But without it, tell me Ruby Rose, who can save you now? You surround yourself with allies and their powers to protect yourself. But without them…" Cinder's magic flared from her eye. "…what can a waste like you achieve?"
A bead of sweat ran down Ruby's temple, she didn't know if it was because of the heat or because of the stress.
My Aura has taken a lot of hits and I´m not sure if I can fight like this. Ruby´s thoughts went back to Metropolis. The ache in her arm seemed to get stronger. Not again.
Zen and Kurtis made noises from Crescent Rose, trying to uplift the human girl and remind her to not lose her courage. She looked down at them, or rather, the weapon in her hands in which the aliens resided. It gave her an idea.
Maybe…
"So you're saying I'm useless on my own? Then let me surprise you. Kurtis, prepare a Thorn Storm!"
The Wisp did as he was told. Several additional energy spikes grew from the scythe blade as Ruby ran towards Cinder at high speed. The Cyborg Maiden prepared herself, expecting the silver eyed girl to fire the spikes at her like before and then try to attack her up close.
But then Ruby threw up Crescent Rose. With her focus on the weapon, Cinder followed its trajectory as it spun through the air. Just as her opponent had hoped.
With Cinder's gaze upward, Ruby increased her speed, gaining momentum, and tensed the muscles in her left arm as she brought it in position. The Cyborg Maiden realized that she shouldn't keep her eyes off her enemy during a battle and looked hastily back down. Her entire view was taken up by Ruby's fist before it collided with her face. The blow sent the black haired woman staggering back, but Cinder tried to strike with her sabers despite her daze. Without slowing down, Ruby ducked under the blades and then jumped up, slamming her head into the Fall Maiden's chin. Cinder staggered back again as her head exploded with more pain.
Ruby took advantage of this to look up, take a few quick steps to the side to catch Crescent Rose, and then deliver a third attack, with the Huntress-in-training shouting, "NOW!"
Kurtis understood his command. When the scythe blade hit Cinder, the spikes were all fired. The strike in combination with the explosion of projectiles sent her flying.
Into the path of Omega.
Ruby's incessant barrage of strikes had broken Cinder's concentration and weakened her focus on her attacks on the others. Even though the brutal winds, infernos and storms had not yet subsided enough for Rouge and Tails, they were no longer an obstacle for the combat robot. Omega punched the Cyborg Maiden into the ground before grabbing her ankles and throwing her around wildly by rotating his upper body. As the rest of the elements stirred up by Cinder calmed down, Omega shouted, "ROUGE!" and released the Cyborg Maiden. She flew towards the bat at high speed. Rouge prepared an attack when she noticed Tails flying at her side and offering a hand. Catching on, she took it. The fox rotated round his axis and gave his ally an additional boost when he threw her. Shooting toward Cinder, Rouge started to spin and smashed into her with a Screw Kick that send them both crashing into the ground. The Cyborg Maiden groaned. Her entire body was pounding from the force of all these constant hits and her Aura was flickering in a weak light. Not much more and then...
"Not so high and mighty now, are we?" Rouge leaned over Cinder, her hands on her hips. Her statement, her tone and even her posture... it reminded the black-haired woman too much of her step-sisters for her to simply accept lying on the floor, defeated.
"Oh you think you're so much better than me? Then you can certainly handle THIS!"
"Wha-"
Winds blew around the duo before they seemed to grab Rouge and toss her away. The bat barely managed to land on her feet. Cinder used the gusts to lift herself into the air and looked down on her enemies.
"You all think I'm weak?" Her gaze fell on Ruby. The silver-eyed girl noticed how Rouge silently took into the air and gestured to her to keep Cinder´s attention on her. Ruby quickly looked back into the pyromaniac´s mismatching eyes. One amber colored, organic and emanating with magical energies. The other mechanical and with a cold, red glow. Mismatching and yet burning with the same amount of hatred for the world, especially for Ruby. But despite everything, the young girl didn't back down. She started to speak.
"Honestly speaking… yes." Cinder gritted her teeth and opened her mouth, but Ruby interrupted her. "Yeah, here we go: Another tantrum. Another statement about how it's my destiny to die at your hands or something. Or how more powerful you are. Shadow was right, you ARE weak. You are broken and are using your power and proclaims as a crutch instead of trying to face your scars and heal them."
"REPEAT TO PREVIOUS STATEMENT: LOGICALLY SPEAKING, THE HIGHEST FORM OF POWER IS USELESS IF ITS USER LACKS THE MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL MATURITY TO USE IT PROPERLY."
"You… you…" Cinder was breathing heavily. It took all of her willpower to focus her rage instead of letting herself be consumed by it. Tails took a step toward the hovering Fall Maiden.
"They are right. And you know what else you are, Cinder? You…"
"DON'T YOU DARE CALL ME WEAK AS WELL!"
To Cinders confusion Tails smirked.
"Heh… double deja vu. No, what I wanted to say was: You are distracted once again."
The Cyborg Maiden realized the allusion to a situation from Mystic Jungle when Ruby had shot her with her remaining Dust bullets. Cinder turned around and got a heart bomb blowing up right in her face.
The explosion completely disoriented her and she flew dazed in the air. Rouge back off from her and yelled: "Now attack her with everything you´ve got!"
Ruby, Tails and Omega didn't need to be told twice. They quickly moved into position around Cinder. Omega aimed his two cannons at her as they rotated slowly, lightning flashing in their barrels.
Tails raised his Double-Wispon, Flare and Strom had enough energy for another Plasma attack.
Ruby changed Crescent Rose into her Sniper Rifle form and aimed at the crazy person who had caused her so much pain and grief.
This is for Pyrrha, for Penny, for every person at Beacon, and for me! Ruby pulled the trigger. Her friends also fired.
A cyan laser beam, burning plasma, and a bolt of lightning all shot at Cinder Fall. She barely got her bearings back when...
BOOOOM!
From the cloud of smoke from the explosion, a damaged figure fell, sparks from her shattered Aura flying around her like dying fire bugs, and crashed to the ground. Ruby lowered her weapon in disbelief. Did they…
A groan was heard. Ruby´s face darkened and she quickly ran towards the figure, switching her weapon back to a scythe, and quickly reached her defeated enemy. Cinder was alive, but only barely thanks to her cybernetics. Your badly damaged cybernetics.
Several arms were broken off or hanging twitching and useless from her body. The special Chaos Cartridge crystal on Cinder's chest was shattered and gray. Multiple cracks and burns stretched across Cinder's entire body, blood, oil and cables oozing out of them. Her left eye was a smoking crater and her remaining organic one twitched until it fluttered open.
"W-what…?"
Despite all the damage done to her, the pain coursing to what felt her entire being, the Fall Maiden tried to stand, but felt the hard steel of Crescent Rose's blade pressed against her throat. She looked up. Ruby stood over her, eyes glaring at her as coldly as the metal they shared a color with.
"Give up Cinder. Your Aura is destroyed. You lost."
To emphasize this, Ruby pressed her weapon harder against the black-haired woman's throat while Kurtis let more thorns grow from it. Cinder felt the them lightly pierce her skin, her now vulnerable skin.
The realization of this made the Cyborg Maiden look at Ruby with a mixture of disgust and malice.
"Do you think your victory has any meaning? Without the help of your so-called friends, you would have died at my hands. Without them, your destiny would be to die a lonely death, just like Pyrrha Nikos and that android who posed as a girl!"
The words were intended to burn through Ruby's soul like poison and yet she couldn't feel anything, not even an itch coming from her scars. Even utterly defeated, this lunatic laying in front of her refused to stop talking about the destiny crap!
Cinder, finally, flinched when Ruby´s eyes bore into her one like a pair of silver daggers. Her tone was very serious.
"I don't care about any of that. What I care about is how do you know about my mother? Why do you talk weird and cryptic stuff about her? Tell me!"
With loud stomps, Omega appeared to Ruby´s left and Tails flew to her right with rotating namesakes. Rouge kept herself high in the air, ready to jump in in case the Fall Maiden tried to do something. Ruby put more pressure on Cinder´s throat.
"Tell me!" she repeated. "What do you know?"
"I know that she was actually worthy of her power, she fought her battles herself! Even when you are trying to threaten me-" Smirking the damaged cyborg used a still functional arm to point at the mobians and the E-Series robot. "-you still need these freaks to look intimidating!"
Ruby growled in frustration. Couldn't there be at least one good and simple thing about Cinder? Why was-
Tails laid a gentle hand on Ruby´s shoulder. His touch helped her to calm down. Right, she should remain calm about this and not feel for Cinder´s taunts. Instead, she should show her that two could play that game. And maybe then the black-haired woman would finally back down.
"You know what, Cinder? Maybe your right. Maybe I could only defeat you with only the help of my friends. But what if its was simply YOUR destiny to be bested by the all of us? Having thought about that?"
The Fall Maiden magic billowed from Cinder´s eye in a menacing glow. "You-"
"And you know what else? I was as good as alone during our battle in Metropolis. And yet…" Ruby pulled out her Chaos Emerald and made a stabbing motion with it. "… I still managed to get some good hits against you."
"You-" Once again, the silver-eyed girl interrupted her enemy again. Allowing herself to have a shit-eating grin appear on her face.
"Maybe piercing my Emerald trough your arm was destiny´s way of warning you what the future would have in store for you." Regaining her serious gaze and tone, the huntress-in-training pointed at the cyborgs broken arms, no, all of her body. "Utter defeat."
No no no no no NO NO NO NO! Cinder wasnt defeated, she wasn't! She earned herself the power to make her tormentors squirm underneath her. To make everyone suffer like she did!
Then why did she lay here, the girl that ruined everything for her towering over here like a victorious ene- NO!
All of her anger, rising during the battle, no her entire stay on Mobius, the Cyborg Maiden trying to use it to focus on her goal, reached its boiling point. It overwhelmed her consciousness. Gnawing it away and leaving only rage. The glow in Cinder´s eye brightened with such an intense hatred for Ruby that it would have only looked natural in the eyes of a Grimm. Wind surged and hissed around the group like a nest of disturbed snakes.
"FUCK YOU, RUBY ROSE! I WILL NOT TELL ANYTHING TO A USELESS, LITTLE-"
Rouge landed beside the deranged cyborg and gave her a swift kick against her temple. The winds died down as Cinder fell unconscious.
"Let us try to get our information out from our enemy back in base instead during a mission."
Ruby closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She exhaled and her posture slumped. She didn't even notice how tense she had become.
"Yes, I… I guess that would be better."
"Are you… okay?" Tails asked her.
"I… I don't know. I feel, in a sense, incomplete? Like this victory doesn't matter."
Omega tried to lift the human girl´s spirit. In his own way.
"THE SUBJECT KNOWN AS CINDER FALLS HAD PROVEN TO BE AN INFERIOR ENEMY TO THE LIKES OF THIS UNIT AND EVERYONE ELSE PRESENT. RUBY ROSE NEEDS AN OPPONENT TRULY FITTING OF HER CALIBER TO GIVE HER THE SATISFACTION OF VICTORY. ADDITIONALLY, OUR MISSION ISN'T OVER. SHADOW AND THE REST ARE MISSING AND THE LOCATION REMAINS UNKNOWN."
"I… yes, we managed to take Cinder down. But this isn't the end of it. We still need to take care of Infinite. And then Eggman." Ruby took another deep breath. "Pyrrha´s killer has been stopped but I don't want to lose Sonic or anyone else to these guys."
We won´t!" encouraged Tails his friend. "If Omega managed to locate us using his scanners and the Chaos Emerald inside of him, then we can do the same with Shadow´s! No matter what may get in our way!"
The Ultimate Lifeform himself was struggling against a Phantom Copy of Infinite. It threw red cubes at him but Shadow dodged them and kicked it away. The copy recovered in the air and flew back at the hedgehog, surrounded by red energies. Shadow jumped back to avoid the dash and then threw a Chaos Lance at it. The blurry Phantom teleported away and re-appeared behind him, a glitchy copy of Infinite´es saber in its hand. It swung the weapon at the hedgehog but the Ultimate Lifeform spun around and clapped the blade between his hands. More copies and the arms of elongated Phantom monsters appeared around Shadow and tried to strike him. He calmly just harnessed his Chaos Energy and obliterated his enemies with a Chaos Blast.
Silver flew between several arms and used his telekinesis to knot them together. Then he was forced to fly up as Infinite's red cubes formed walls around him, closing rapidly around the hedgehog.
The Reality Manipulator itself dodged Sonic's Spindash and slashed at him with its claws. The blue hedgehog managed to grab his foe at the wrist and flung him over his shoulders. Infinite grunted as he landed on the hard ground, but that was all. He quickly got back to his feet and fired a laser at Sonic. He jumped over it, rolled up and used homing attacks against the masked foe. The first ones hit, but then Infinite managed to deflect the blue sphere. Sonic unfurled and landed on his feet. He looked at Infinite with a determined expression and wanted to try another attack. However, one of the elongated arms managed to grab Silver and threw him at the blue hedgehog. Infinite focused his energy in his hand and threw a massive, red orb at them. Shadow noticed the dilemma his allies were facing, punched a Phantom away, and raced in front of them to destroy the orb with a Chaos Lance.
"Ah, all of you in one place. Wonderful." Infinite created cubes and canons made from white metal, aiming it all on the trio. Twisted, long Phantom arms rose around him. Shadow helped the other hedgehogs to get quickly back on their feet. They all prepared to counter, no way they would be able to dodge all these attacks.
Before any side could do anything though, the ground between them exploded. Everyone stepped away from the smoking crater in surprise. Omega and Tails were the first ones to jump up from it. They started firing with electricity and paralyzing or straight up destroying the Phantom arms. Silver quickly aided them with his Psychic Knifes.
"What the…" Infinite got over his surprise and aimed his canons at them, but a red petal cloud burst from the hole and revealed Ruby with a raised sniper in her hands. She aimed and shoot into the barrels of the cannons, making them explode. She then landed on the ground, close to the hedgehogs. She turned to them and a smile appeared on her face.
"We found you guys!"
"And much quicker than we thought we would." Rouge flew into the chamber, carrying Cinder´s unconscious form. As soon as she saw that everyone had their hands full, she dropped the Cyborg Maiden onto the floor like a sack of potatoes. The bat flew towards Infinite. He balled up his cubes as rotating projectiles and threw them at Rouge. She dodged between them, aided by Shadow as he disrupted Infinite's focus with Chaos Spears, and reached the entity. She began denting his mask with a rapid series of kicks.
"Looks like you've already finished your `boss fight´," Sonic said to Ruby and nodded towards Cinder. "Heh, yeah, but we're not done yet while you're busy with yours."
Sonic grinned. "Then what are we waiting for? Let's all finish it together."
The speedsters ran toward Infinite. But the masked entity growled and yelled, "ENOUGH!"
Everyone was blown away by a burst of red energy violently emitting from their enemy. Infinite adjusted his mask, healing its atomic structure from the dents from Rouge's kicks, before his golden eye trained on the seven Resistance members.
"So you all managed to get together." He gave Cinder a sideways glance at Cinder's motionless and broken form. "And deprived someone of their revenge in the process. How unfortunate."
Everyone stood side by side.
"I have to admit, you've dealt a lot, but me, Silver and Shadow are far from finished. And with the rest of our friends, well, things are looking bad for you."
Infinite chuckled. It was a farce. Underneath his mask, the face wore an expression of concern. While he wouldn't admit it to his enemies, his rumble with the hedgehog trio did tire him out more than he was comfortable with. He also didn't like that Cinder was here, someone like Shadow could easily take her as a hostage. With them having their advantage in resources and numbers, Infinite knew it was more likely he would loose. At least in a direct fight.
But maybe…
A sudden thought entered the reality manipulators mind. He looked at Ruby.
Just maybe…
With a hidden smile he said, "Well, as much as it pains me to admit, you have managed to turn this around to your favor. I would give my congratulations to your skill and teamwork, but doing so would make me sick. So instead, let me turn it back to how it´s supposed to be."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
Shadow got his answer when Infinite raised his hand. Purple mist with little glitches culminated inside of it. Infinite, almost gently, threw it at the group. As a wavering orb it hovered in front of them.
"Wha… what is this?" Silver asked. He felt uneasy looking at this and so did everyone else. Shadow narrowed his eyes at the phenomena.
Back in Mystic Jungle, when Infinite took my Chaos Emerald, it looks just like-
"Guys, this stuff reminds me of the void I woke up in," Ruby said, her voice on edge.
"Indeed. This is Null Space. The perfect representation and manifestation of what my existence truly means. And for you a one-way ticket to literally nowhere. All your hopes and determination will be doomed to nothing!"
"We won't let it get that far!"
Tails, Ruby and Omega began firing at Infinite. Silver and Shadow formed their respective projectiles and Rouge threw her heart bombs.
Sonic took a starting position and wanted to attack Infinite with a boost. But before anything could even reach her masked opponent, the Phantom Ruby glowed.
And Null Space opened.
The orb of purple mist expanded and a sudden suction sucked in all the projectiles. Sonic, who had already started moving, lost his footing and flew towards the mist.
"SONIC!" Ruby and Tails screamed before they were also caught in the suction. Silver reached out a hand to hold her mentally while his telekinetic energy wrapped around him to keep himself from flying away.
Omega dug his claws into the ground while Rouge and Shadow held on to him.
They all struggled against the power of Null Space. Only Infinite and Cinder were spared, as they were protected by the power of the Phantom Ruby.
Said reality manipulator used his ability to make the ground beneath Team Dark become loose, so Silver had to hold them in his mental grip as well. He gritted his teeth as his head started to pound, blood trickling from his nose. Holding everyone and himself against the powerful suction of Null Space strained the time traveler. But he wouldn't, no, couldn't give up!
Pity that someone had other plans.
Infinite teleported behind the hedgehog and fired a red energy orb into his back. Silver cried out in pain, his concentration broken. And so was his psychic hold. The turquoise glow of Silver´s ability disappeared from everyone and they all where sucked in into Null Space. Infinite clenched his fist and the purple, misty orb close in on itself.
The jackal looked at the place where Sonic had standing on just a few second ago. He remembered their exchange in Metropolis.

"Tell me Sonic, is the pain really worth fighting on?"
The person addressed took a deep breath. Then, with a loud groan, he stood up. He stared determinedly at his opponent, taking a battle ready stance.
"Yes. Yes it is."
...
"Show me the truth behind your words, hedgehog."
So yeah, Team ROTR managed to defeat Cinder, but now they and Team Triple-S are stuck in Null Space.
