*Dark alleyway, Shibuya prefecture, Japan*
"Not Zen'in huh? Good for you."
"I hope there's booze in the afterlife."
Those were the last words and thoughts of the infamous 'Sorcerer Killer', Toji Fushiguro (née Zen'in) before he stabbed himself in the brain with the broken remains of the cursed tool 'Playful Cloud' and succumbed to darkness.
*Tristain Magical Academy, south courtyard*
"Heed my summoning and bring forth my familiar!"
"Very good Miss Montmorency! I see your affinity lies with the water element then." Professor Colbert, a bald man with a strange staff adorned with red wrappings praised.
"As expected of my dear Montmorency!" The young woman's lover, Guiche declared loudly. "A frog is a clear sign of being one with water!" Yes, the exclamation points are meant to be there.
Many within the crowd of students clap and give praises to Montmorency for summoning her familiar. These are the noble second year students of Tristain's premier magical academy. Amongst the crowd one could see many animals such as birds, cats and dogs, or even rare magical creatures such as a bright red salamander with a flame at the tip of the tail, aptly named 'Flame' by the buxom dark-skinned redhead it was laying next to.
"Now class has everyone summoned their familiars?" Questioned the professor.
"No no, not yet professor, Miss Vallière has yet to summon hers." The aforementioned redhead, Kirche said in a sly, teasing tone.
"Ah right, Miss Louise, if you would?" Prodded the professor as a small, young looking girl with pink hair stepped forwards to summon her familiar.
All around, mutterings of "Can she even manage this?" and "She'll probably just screw up again." could be heard. This girl is Louise Françoise le Blanc de la Vallière, more commonly known as 'Louise the Zero', and not without good reason. Every spell she has tried to perform has either not worked or blown up in an explosion of epic proportions. She is, however, a top student in her class so the assumption (more like a rumor started by Kirche over a house rivalry dating back decades) that she had no magical prowess was started and the name stuck.
"This needs to work! Please Lord Brimir, heed my call and grant me a powerful familiar!" And with that thought, Lousie started her summoning chant.
"My familiar somewhere in this vast universe!"
Shocked mutterings could be heard all around her, but she could care less. She knew if she tried the basic summoning it wouldn't work so her best bet was to improvise and speak from her heart, Brimir guiding her to power.
"Oh heavenly, beautiful and strong familiar!"
"Here I desire and plead from my heart!"
"Answer my call to greatness!" She finished as she twirled her wand and sent out as much willpower (different name for mana but works the same) as she could into her spell.
*BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM*
A massive explosion rang out through the clearing, blasting dust everywhere and causing some of the more easily frightened students to fall in shock. As the dust cleared a form could be seen, until a gust of wind blew away the remaining dust to reveal a large man wearing baggy white pants and a form fitting black t-shirt. The man looked around, gaze hard as steel and finally opened his mouth to speak.
"Hruot tee phouk?"
*The Void*
Toji floated in the void, endlessly waiting for something to happen. He couldn't see but it didn't matter; he could see using his other senses, not that they were getting much either.
"Where the fuck am I?"
"I thought there'd be more fire than this. Am I in Limbo?"
Just as this thought crossed the sorcerer killer's mind, a bright green portal appeared in front of him. Curious, he stepped (floated?) forwards to investigate and as he touched the portal it expanded and grabbed his arm.
"What the hell? What is this?" He yelled as he tried to pull his arm out with all of his considerable might.
The portal did not stop there and soon most of his body was inside the portal. He could feel his consciousness start to slip away as words echoed in his mind "ANSWER MY CALL TO GREATNESS!" and could only wonder.
"Damn, is this how Kami-sama wants me to suffer?"
*Tristain Academy*
Toji had seen many strange things in his 32ish years of life, a brat with the power of gods, a man who can swap his brain from body to body and even meeting his own son over a decade after his first death, but even with all that in mind, he was confused.
As the smoke from his arrival cleared, he could make out what was what. There were a bunch of kids, probably his kids age, in strange robes standing in a courtyard. Looking around, each one had some sort of an animal with them, toads, dogs, hell even a dragon at the back. They started to murmur in some sort of French dialect he couldn't recognize and Toji, fed up with the insanity, said the only thing that could come to mind right now.
"What the fuck?"
He saw a preteen pink haired girl standing in front of him and concluded, even with his lack of linguistic skills, that she was the one who created the portal that dropped him here. She turned to the only adult in his sightline (and he barely withheld a snicker at his haircut, or lack thereof) and started speaking the strange language again, sounding quite upset at whatever was happening. Baldy said some strange words back in a stern tone and the little girl sighed, as if resigned to a terrible fate and stalked over to him while darkly muttering.
"Cette vatoure va no mais recomcenceoir 'Familiar Contract' vas aller." The confusing pinkette announced.
Then, she put an arm up to the back of his neck and attempted to pull him down to her height. Of course, both being a 6'2 pile of muscles and having a heavenly restriction, he stood like a brick wall being punched by an infant. Eventually the girl stopped trying and looked at him angrily. She started ranting in her language and after about 30 seconds of this, Toji couldn't help but wonder if he should do himself a favour and put her out of her misery when he remembered that this was probably his atonement for his sins and that no matter what cranky toddler was in front of him, it sure as hell beat the underworld.
*sigh* "Fine may as well." He muttered as he lowered himself to her height.
Pinky stopped whining and let out a small cheer. She walked right up to him and kissed him straight on the lips. He instantly pushed himself away, not liking the fact a 12-year-old just frenched him.
"What the, oi gaki what the hell are you doin'? Trying to get me in jail?" He questioned but was again met with a blank glare until the girl pulled out a stick and started muttering.
"Chetée, manou, ao, 'silence"!" A small explosion popped in his face, ripping his shirt and surprising him, but he was even more surprised by the aftermath.
"Miss Louise please try not to kill your familiar right after you summoned him."
"Hmpf, I merely cast a silencing spell on it, that's all."
"Riiiiight" Baldy said suspiciously.
Getting fed up with the nonsensical ability shown he decided to get some answers. He opened his mouth to speak when suddenly, his left hand started burning. He had felt worse before (literally got the left side of his body obliterated) but this was up there on his pain threshold. He stopped worrying when it began to dull and was starting to go from suspicious curiosity to anger, and fast.
"Hmph finally the familiar contract runes are appearing," said Louise. She was worried whether she had messed up again or perhaps her contract failed.
"Ah I guess the Zero really does have magic" Kirche (damn her) giggled.
"Summoning a commoner though how… fitting."
At that remark, the students all started chatting and jeering at Louise. She had never felt worse in her whole life, getting a familiar was supposed to be a new beginning, a chance to shed the nickname 'Zero' and to prove that she was a respectable noble but alas, fate had different ideas.
A commoner, dressed in dreary, ripped clothes (that definitely weren't ripped because of an explosion) and a scowl on his face. She was about to go and ask Professor Colbert for another shot when a tingle shot up her spine. Louise was not alone in this feeling as everyone in the class started to sweat a little. Scared out of her mind she turned around when she heard a voice speak in her native tongue that the tone indicated was her familiar, she thought she put a silencing spell on him (oops).
"What… did you do to me." The man asked through gritted teeth. A closer look and one could see his fingers clenched so tight blood started to seep into his palms.
"AH… uh… um… I am uh Louise Françoise le Blanc de la Vallière. You have been summoned to be my familiar through magical practice." She explained, but not without hesitating because of the aura radiating off her new familiar.
"Familiar? That like a shikigami or something? Must be based on the animals around here. Ha, guess no matter what world I'm in I'm an anomaly" Toji thought after she finished her explanation.
No later than 10 seconds after her explanation did the dark aura recede back into Louise's new familiar and he spoke,
"So, what's this some kinda school?"
"huh?" She was confused. Seconds ago, she thought she was going to die but THIS was his only question, some kind of school? It cemented the thought that she really did summon a commoner and sighed sadly. Class had ended though, so she had to leave.
"Just follow me and I will explain." the pink girl said.
Deciding that following her was his best chance of figuring out what was going on, he quickly caught up with her and they walked in silence to her room.
