For when you're being naughty
Luckyboy asked for a oneshot of Snow and Charming telling Neal about his middle name. Emma gets upset because she doesn't have one but then finds out she does.
"Neal Leopald Nolan." Snow said sternly. "What do we say when we bang into someone?"
"Sorry Emma." Neal chanted.
"That's better. Remember, even when it's an accident we have to say sorry." Charming reminded him. Neal nodded.
"Mommy, daddy…why when I do something naughty do you call me Neal Leopald? You only ever call me Neal the rest of the time." He asked, confused.
"Well buddy, Leopald is your middle name. It's just a way of making sure your name is definitely different. So if there are any other people called Neal Nolan in the world you can use your middle name too so people know the difference. But it's also a way to know you're being naughty when you get middle named." He told his son, ruffling his hair.
"But you never middle name Emma when she's being naughty." Neal whined.
"I don't have a middle name." Emma told him. I'm just Emma kid."
"I don't understand." He said, confused. "Why is your name so different? Your last name is different from us too. You're Emma Swan, not Emma Nolan. Why didn't mommy and daddy give you a middle name so when you were naughty they could middle name you?" He asked. Emma bit her lip, unsure how to answer. Her parents had never given her a middle name. There was never going to be any need for one. They wouldn't need to use it when she was naughty, they weren't going to be there.
Snow and Charming could see their daughter struggling with how to respond. She had never known her full name. The only reason she knew her first name was because of her blanket.
"Emma does have a middle name." Charming stated, causing both his children to look over to him and Snow.
"Emma Ruth. We chose it before Emma was even born. Mommy and daddy just forgot to tell her." Snow answered her son. Neal seemed to accept this answer, and Snow predicted that from now on whenever Emma upset him he'd refer to her as Emma Ruth. Emma on the other hand seemed to look completely stunned.
"You alright?" Charming asked her. Emma nodded.
"Yeah. I just never knew is all…it's nice. I like it." She said with a smile.
"It's after my mother." Charming informed her. "She would have been proud to have her name as part of yours." Both parents smiled as Emma blushed slightly.
"I'm going to go…check I locked the car." Emma excused herself, still finding emotional situations difficult. Snow and Charming let her go without a fuss. It was a step in the right direction. She'd get there.
