What big sisters are for

A guest asked for a oneshot of Emma having a little sister in the future who comes to her instead of Snow when she "becomes a woman".

Emma felt a rapid knock on her apartment door. She sighed. It was her first day off in a long time and she was trying to spend as little time off the couch as possible.

"Coming." She called, getting up and opening the door. "Rosie?" She said. "You should be at school, what are you doing here honey?" She asked her nine year old sister. Emma could tell something was really wrong. "In you come." She said, moving aside allowing Rosie to scurry through.

Rosie went into the living room, standing looking at her feet.

"Well, come on sit down and tell me what's wrong." Emma told her, sitting back down on the couch. Rosie shook her head frantically. Only then did Emma notice Rosie had her hoodie around her waist. "Oh sweetie, have you had a little accident?" She asked. Rosie went bright red and shook her head again.

"No...well, not exactly. I've…I've…I'm bleeding. You know. Down there…" Rosie stammered. Emma immediately understood. She smiled warmly. Her baby sister was growing up.

"Ahh," Emma said, understanding. "Are you worried about it? Do you know why?" Rosie shrugged.

"Kind of. They've talked about it at school. I didn't want to go to mom…you know what she's like." Emma chuckled. She did indeed. Before Rosie knew it all the women in Storybrooke would know. As well as their father and their mother knowing would be bad enough for the poor girl.

"Well, I've always got some clothes for you and Neal here just in case. And I have some things to help you out with the bleeding too. So, what do you say you pop into the bathroom and have a shower and get changed and I'll pop on some hot cocoa for us, yeah?" Rosie smiled shyly at her big sister and nodded, heading off to the bathroom. Emma slipped in Rosie's change of clothes as well as everything she needed.

"If you need any help just let me know ok?" She told her.

"Ok." Rosie said. Emma left again and got the hot cocoa set up. Rosie came through about ten minutes later. Emma smiled, passing her a mug. "Thanks." She murmured.

"No problem." Emma told her. "So…do you understand what's happening to you?" Emma asked her. Rosie went bright pink and nodded.

"Well, sort of." She mumbled.

"Well, why don't you tell me what you're not getting and I'll try and clear it up for you?" Emma suggested.

"I don't understand where it's coming from really." Rosie mumbled, embarrassed.

"Well…Now that you're growing up a bit. Your body is getting ready for you to have babies. That is just your body, by the way that does not mean you're anywhere near ready to have one. You probably won't remember how dad reacted when I got pregnant again but let's just say my baby very nearly grew up fatherless." Emma said with a small chuckle, remembering how her dad had immediately gotten his sword. He hadn't figured Emma was crying for happiness when he'd overheard her telling Snow she was pregnant. "Anyway, you get the point, no babies for a very long time. Your period is just your body getting ready for a baby. When nothing happens, it gets rid of the blood. That's all, even if it does suck a little." Rosie gave a nervous little laugh. Emma smiled, picking up her phone. "Don't worry, I'll take the bullet and call mom to let her know." Rosie groaned.

"Do we have to tell her at all?" She moaned.

"Afraid so sweetie. She'd notice pretty quickly anyway. Don't worry, I'll tell her to be cool." Emma assured her baby sister before going out to the hall and calling their mom.

"Hey Emma," Snow answered. "What's up?"

"Well…nothing much really…" Emma answered. "Rosie's round here."

"Why is Rosie not at school?" Snow asked.

"She got her first period and panicked a little bit so came round here. Don't worry, she's fine. I sorted her out and answered any questions." Emma assured her.

"Oh." Snow said a little flatly. "Ok. I'll come pick her up."

"Are you alright?" Emma asked, picking up on her tone.

"I suppose. I just don't understand why she went to you and not me." Snow said, a little huffily. Emma couldn't help but laugh.

"Come on mom. She's just embarrassed and knows how you'd react." Emma said gently.

"What's that meant to mean? I'd have been very calm…" Emma cut her off with a little laugh.

"Mom. You're anything but calm in these situations. All throughout my pregnancy you asked weird questions like did I have itchy nipples or any weird discharge…"

"Those were not weird questions, I was just concerned for my daughter's comfort! Anyway, I guess it's just a little upsetting that now I missed that special moment with both of you." Snow told her. Now Emma understood.

"Mom, relax. You're still going to have plenty of chances to embarrass Rosie, ok? But just be cool about this and keep it to yourself. The poor girl doesn't need people giving her funny looking smiles."

"I still maintain I'm cool about everything. And don't think I won't have any more chances to embarrass you, Emma. I still have plenty times to make up for!"

"Oh come on? Haven't I been scarred enough? You were really going into detail when I was pregnant!" Emma complained.

"Not by a long shot. I'll be over soon. Thanks for looking after her today, Emma."

"You don't have to thank me. It's my job. See you soon." Emma said, hanging up. She went back through to the living room.

"She'll be over soon. Don't worry, I've made sure she'll be calm." Emma told her. Rosie smiled gratefully.

"Thanks Emma." She said sincerely. Emma went over and sat beside her before pulling her sister into a hug.

"No need to thank me honey. It's what big sisters are for."
