A new start

Rose asked for a oneshot of Snow and Charming (or Mary Margaret and David) adopting a two year old Emma during the first curse and her breaking it.

To the guest who asked for a nightmare story with Emma, check out "Nightmare" :) .

The pair sat at the windowsill like excited children waiting for Santa to come. Instead, they were waiting for a social worker. She would be bringing them their daughter. It still felt so strange to them, despite knowing the little girl for several months. The adoption agency had paired Mary Margaret and David with Emma when the process began. They were wanting to find the troubled little girl a loving home- and she bore an uncanny resemblance to the couple. After all this time of paperwork and police checks, their little girl was finally coming home.

"They're here!" Mary Margaret squeaked, as she saw the now familiar powder blue Ford Escort pulling up. David put his hand round his now bouncing wife's shoulders and squeezed as they saw the little girl in the backseat. She seemed happy, if a little nervous, clutching her baby blanket. They almost ran to the front door as Diane got out of the car and got Emma and her suitcase out. David opened it as they approached.

"Well hey there!" He greeted them warmly. Diane was carrying Emma in one hand and her suitcase in the other. Emma grinned happily at them. Mary Margaret and David had spoken to Emma before officially adopting her. They wanted her to be included in the decision. She had been so ecstatic when they asked her little over a week ago if she wanted them to be her mommy and daddy. Now she was finally here. Mary Margaret reached over and took Emma from Diane as David took her suitcase.

"I can see I'm not needed here." Diane said with a warm smile. "Unless you want me to stay for a while Emma?" Emma shook her head, feeling quite at ease. "Ok then sweetie. I'll be round in a month or so just to make sure everyone's happy. You have my number if you need me."

"Thank you, but I'm sure we'll be just fine." Mary Margaret said, looking lovingly at the little girl. Not wanting to intrude, Diane quietly left, getting back into her car and driving away to her next case of the day.

"So Emma, are you happy with your new home?" Emma nodded into Mary Margaret's shoulder.

"You still mama and daddy?" She asked. Mary Margaret smiled, moving some hair from Emma's face.

"Now and forever baby." She and David each leaned forward and kissed one of Emma's cheeks each. A bright light flashed out from the little girl, engulfing the whole town. Snow and Charming gasped, memories flooding through them. They looked at the little girl in Snow's arms. Who they now knew really was their little girl. Emma looked shocked, unsure of what just happened.

"Emma." Snow said, choking up. Emma looked up at her mommy and saw that she was crying. She looked at her daddy and saw he was crying too.

"Did I do something wrong?" She asked. "I'm sorry! I'll be good, please don't give me back!-"

"Hey shh." Charming said, rubbing her back. "Emma, we're never giving you back baby. Ever. You're our little girl, ok?" Emma nodded, but both could see she still looked unconvinced. They looked at each other, sharing an eye conversation. How do you explain the situation to a little girl so young?

"Come on." Snow said, hiking Emma up on her hip. "Let's go through to the living room. We've got a special story for you…"
