A hero's death

A guest asked for a oneshot of Regina deciding to kill Mary Margaret when she's in the cell in season 1. Emma jumps in the way and Regina accidentally kills her instead. Sarah4 I've included Charming for you :) So yes, Trigger warning of main character death!

Mary Margaret lifted her head from her hands when she heard someone walking slowly into the station. Her heart sank when she saw Regina and not Emma.

"What are you doing here?" She asked. Regina smiled at her.

"I wanted to see you while I still can." She responded cryptically while still walking closer.

"What does that mean?" Mary Margaret sighed, fed up of all the secrecy.

"Simply that the trial starts tomorrow and it won't be a long one." Regina answered, standing casually beside the bars. "Then you'll be sent out of Storybrooke for good and I will never have to see you again." Regina paused for a moment, just grinning at the woman in the cell. "Ahh I wanna enjoy this while I still can."

"Enjoy what?" Mary Margaret asked. What had she done that was so wrong?! She was innocent!

"Justice." Regina snapped.

"Justice? Watching an innocent suffer?" She asked, what was Regina's problem!

"You've always seen yourself that way haven't you?" Regina said, her eyes narrowing. Mary Margaret shook her head, not understanding. "Innocent." Suddenly, Mary Margaret ran at the bars to be as close to the mayor as possible.

"I am innocent!" She shouted desperately. Why wouldn't anyone believe her? "I don't know what this is about. I don't know what I ever did to you but whatever it was Regina…I'm sorry. I truly am." Mary Margaret wailed, pleading for her freedom. Regina came just that little bit closer.

"Apology not accepted." She whispered cruelly.

"Please, don't do this to me." She begged. "I don't deserve this, I did not kill Kathryn!"

"Oh I know." Regina said, almost soothingly, as she reached her hand through the bar and stroked the woman's cheek. Mary Margaret stopped crying and backed away, confused. Regina took her jaw harshly in her hand. "But you do deserve this." She whispered. Regina suddenly had a new plan. She had brought a small letter opening knife with her, just in case things got ugly. "You know what; you don't have to go through a trial." She said, trying to sound like she'd seen the light. Regina delighted in the way Mary Margaret's eyes suddenly sparkled with hope- false hope. She pulled the little blade out of her pocket and grabbed the woman's two hands. "I'll let you out- slowly. It'll look like you did it yourself. Don't worry, you'll be free. She sneered.

"No!" She shrieked trying to pull her hands away, but Regina was far too strong. Neither saw Emma bursting through the door. She'd been coming in to do some paperwork when she heard her roommate scream. She saw Regina standing with Mary Margaret. She saw the glint of the knife, and knew she couldn't let it happen. She ran forward and forced herself between Regina and Mary Margaret. Regina wasn't expecting this, and the knife slashed across Emma's throat. Regina's eyes widened in horror. Emma gave a horrible gurgled cry. Her world was going black, she knew it would be over soon. And so did Regina, and she knew what that meant. She was going to die too. If there was any hope for Regina now it lay in her vault. She fled, leaving Emma on the floor and Mary Margaret screaming in her cell.

"No! Emma, no!" Mary Margret cried, holding her roommate through her cell. She felt so helpless, she couldn't do anything to save her roommate's life. Emma looked up at Mary Margaret and smiled. She had saved her friend's life. If she had to go, she was going the right way. Emma let her world turn black. But as she did, a blast of light came from her lifeless body. It through the cell door open and nearly took Mary Margaret off her feet as it washed over her. Then- it really hit her. She remembered everything. And she knew that the woman who was lying dead in front of her wasn't just her roommate- it was her daughter. Her heart shattered into a thousand tiny pieces. She couldn't even speak. She just sunk to the floor and held Emma's limp body. Her daughter's limp body. They never got to spend any time together. Charming…how was Snow going to tell him? It looked like she wasn't going to have to. She heard him coming in.

"Snow? Emma? Are you in here? It's broken! I remember!" He came through to the room with a massive grin on his face. When he saw Snow on the floor with Emma and a pool of blood surrounding them his smile disappeared.

"Regina." Snow croaked. "She killed her." Charming couldn't believe what he was hearing. This couldn't be true! He had just got his daughter back, she couldn't be dead? He fell to his knees beside his wife and daughter, pulling Emma over to him and holding her tightly in his shaking arms. But they were both too late. She was gone.
