Chapter 2: The Shining Beacon

(Bullhead Landing to Beacon, 8:00 am, Vale)

Crowded could not even begin to describe the landing platform, people of all sorts were gathered here, all of them hand picked to study and train in one of the four prestigious huntsman academies Remnant had to offer, and while each kingdom had its own academy, it was not uncommon to find foreigners trying to apply themselves to other academies.

Kane could not help but to grimace at the sight, since he could remember, he was never a fan of crowds, for him, it was too many people and too much noise, though he did chuckle a bit, knowing that crowds like these is where scoundrels like him thrived, and since he was waiting anyways, he might as well keep himself busy, navigating the crowded ocean of people, Kane nicked some lien from some of the unfortunate souls among the oceans of people, and in the meantime he was able to also take a good look at the people that would be attending this school with him.

One girl was humming to herself nervously, the whole experience exciting, but also frightening her, the girl had fair skin, and her eyes were silver, she also had neck-length black hair with red tips. She wore a black dress consisting of a long-sleeved blouse with a high collar and red trim on the sleeves, over which there was a black waist cincher with red lacing up the front, and a matching skirt with red lining and a red petticoat. She also wore a pair of thick black tights that faded to red near the bottom, and black combat boots. To top it all off, she wore a red hooded cape that was fastened to her shoulders with cross shaped pins, what stood out to Kane thought was the silver rose shaped emblem that she wore at her waist, that thing looked valuable, and Kane locked his sights on it, he approached the red girl from her blind spot and with a with a quick motion of his hand he managed to nick it off her, he quickly turned around and walked the opposite direction, savoring his new reward, the thing was masterly crafted with much attention to detail, even someone as inexperienced as Kane could tell that.

"Man, this thing must be worth a pretty penny, how did a girl like her get something like this?" Kane muttered to himself as he stashed the silver rose in his pocket, as he was surfing the crowd he was able to catch a few more faces that stood out to him, he noticed a young man that looked deathly mortified.

"Oh man, oh man… no one told me about having to take a flight to the academy." A young man walked in circles, his blonde hair was a tad unkempt, but not to the extreme that Kane's was, he had dark blue eyes and fair skin, he wore a black short-sleeved hoodie with detached reddish-orange sleeves, over his hoodie, the boy wore a white diamond-shaped chest plate cut off above his lower abdomen, and placed over his shoulders were a pair of white spaulders with rerebraces set under them, below he wore blue jeans and black sneakers he also wore brown wrist-length gloves with exposed fingertips and small metal plates over the back. "Come on Jaune, you're a big boy now, no…. a big MAN now, flights don't make you sick anymore, it's just for a few minutes anyways, you can handle it, you are a future huntsman!" Kane decided to leave the "Jaune" alone for now, he also made a mental note to avoid him during the flight to dodge any "accidents" that may strike him.

After another short while of walking, Kane noticed another figure, she seemed to be warming up, moving restlessly to throw away any unnecessary energy. After a while she switched to shadow boxing, throwing powerful strikes at the air. Kane was no stranger to fist fights, he had his fair amount of them, and thus he could tell, this girl threw a mean punch, every strike thrown with amazing quickness and sharpness, he almost recoiled in instinct, her wide smile gave away the sheer excitement she had over the prospect of going to Beacon. She was fairly tall for the average student in here, she had lilac eyes, but what made her truly stand out was her hair, it was long, thick, wavy and bright golden that faded to a paler gold at the end tips, with a cowlick sticking out on top, it was obvious that she takes a great amount of of her time taking care of it. She wore a tan jacket that exposed her midriff and puffy sleeves with black cuffs, underneath all that she also wore a bright yellow low cut crop top, an emblem seemed to be drawn to the left side of the clothing, bellow she wore a brown belt covered by a pleated brown piece of material reaching from hip to hip around the back of her waist, she also wore a pair of tight black spandex compression shorts that reach her upper thighs, she wore a pair of brown, knee-high boots and orange over-the-knee socks, with the right sock pushed down just below the knee, a bandana was wrapped around one of her knees. She continued her shadow boxing, giving no mind to Kane who was analyzing her.

"Alright, let's try this again." She resumed her quick successive strikes at the air. "Fly like a butterfly, sting like a Yang!" She girl hyped herself, Kane could only cringe.

Deciding to leave her alone, he decided that he had enough of scouting the potential competition, he tried to find a isolated spot he could let himself relax in, but the crowded place proved difficult in finding such, he kept looking and looking, in his distraction he bumped into someone, looking up to see the person he collided with, he was also incredibly tall, he had dirty blonde spiked hair and green eyes, around his forehead he wore a bright red bandana, as if signaling his presence, the thing stuck out even amongst this crowd, he wore a black vest that was only zipped mid way through, underneath the vest he wore a dark green shirt, he also wore black gloves that seemed to be armored at the back, bellow him, he wore baggy gray pants, pants that were filled with all manner of pockets to store anything, the pants were supported by a brown belt that he wore across his waist, there was also another belt of the same color, but this one wrapped around his left thigh, he was wearing heavy black combat boots.

"Apologies. I should have paid more attention to my surroundings!" The stranger bellowe out, his voice carried excess energy and power, his stance giving off confidence, but also friendliness, he came off as someone who doesn't harbors ill feelings for long.

"Uh, it's fine, don't worry about it." Kane responded in his usual uninterested tone, he turned around, but before he could make his escape, the stranger addressed him again.

"It's exciting isn't it? Beacon Academy, aren't you excited? Soon we'll be learning from some of the best huntsmen our generation knows of, aren't you hyped!" He yelled out, gaining the attention of some of the surrounding students, Kane looked around him noticing this, a slight blush coming across his face.

"Y-yeah i guess so, could you lower your to-" Kane didn't even have time to finish his sentence.

"Guess so? Guess so!? There is no "guess so"! Only that I "know so!", to be hand picked to be a bastion of safety for the common person, a shining beacon of hope, i could not think of a more honorable privilege to be given, i myself shall give my utmost to the people of Remnant, where ever the Grimm may strike at the innocent, i shall be there to protect them, to arrive with a smile on my face and say "It will be fine!"I cannot think of a greater purpose! AH, where are my manners, my name is Ragni Slifnir, i come from Northern Vale, and what is your na- uh?" Ragni was so embroiled in his speech that he had failed to notice that the youngster he was talking to had sneaked out amongst the ocean of people. Ragni shrugged and smiled. "What an odd guy." he told himself.

Kane had just managed to give the energetic man the slip, he was now slouched and breathing heavily.

"Okay… note to self… Beacon is gonna have some really weird people, hope that guy doesn't get thrown into my team." Kane heard a new sound, but this one was more noticeable then the others, it was not the sounds of voices, or footsteps, it was the sounds of a vehicle arriving to the platform, it had arrived, the Bullhead to Beacon Academy. He looked up in awe at the massive size of the transport, no wonder this thing was gonna fit all these students, it was massive, as it docked, multiple doors opened and the supposed pilot of the bullhead walked out of one the doors.

"Attention future students of Beacon, the bullhead will lift off after everyone present gets inside, please line up in an orderly fashion at each entry of the bullhead, your identity will be confirmed and your spot assured, please be patient and on your best behavior."

And so lines of to-be huntsman formed, and as time move along, the lines got smaller and smaller, Kane just had the ill luck of being stuck to the end of one of these lines, with nothing to do he whistled and hummed to himself to try and move time quicker, his turn was getting close anyways, but from his side view he was able to see a figure crouching to the floor, as if she was looking for something.

"Where is it, oh where is it? I know I brought it with me, I can't have lost it." He recognized her as the silver eyed girl that he had nicked the emblem from, he assumed she was looking for it, and she was looking mighty worried, scouring the floor for her emblem, Kane could swear he was seeing tears from in her eyes, and he didn't lie, he was starting to feel a bit guilty, but he managed to shrug that off and walked along, eventually his turn reached and he boarded the bullhead.

"Excuse me miss." One of the pilots addressed the young girl. "All the students have embarked the bullhead, except for you, we will be leaving soon, may i please ask you to board the ship?" He asked as gently as he could, the girl gave one final look around the floor before looking down in defeat as she boarded the ship, and with that every student was in the bullhead.

Soon the doors closed and the bullhead took off, the students grabbing to their nearest surroundings so as not to lose their balance, and a short while after, the ship took off, its next destination was Beacon Academy.

Inside the Bullhead, Kane looked in awe, it was not his first time hitching a ride in one of these, matter of fact he arrived on Vale by doing just that, but it was the first time he did so without the worry of being caught, he made his way to the large windows of the ship, the view took away his breath, he could see the entirely of Vale from where he stood, and in that moments, Vale, the biggest city of all the kingdoms seemed so small in comparison to everything, he could see all of it, Signal Academy, the dust shops, the harbors, the cafés, even the alleway the he claimed home during his time at the city, it was all visible, he looked on in absolute wanderlust, the view captivating him.

"Amazing, i doubt even Atlas had views that matches this!" The young man told himself, believing himself to be alone to his thoughts.

"It's beautiful isn't it?" A voice caused him to jump to the side, startling him, but his sudden movement seemed to also startle the red hooded girl that was standing next to him without Kane even noticing. "Ah, sorry! I didn't mean to scare you…"

Once the fright had died down, the young girl once again looked through the window at Vale.

"Nah no worries, it's fine, i just never really looked at Vale from this angle before, everything looks so damn small from up here, you know?" Kane asked the young girl, from this proximity he could tell she was quite small, even for the average student, but he also noticed the young girls expression, she was looked devastatingly sad, her eyes fixed on the view, seemingly trying to shake away any negative feeling she may be feeling right now, but the results were not quite effective, she looked to be fighting tears that threatened to trickle down her face, Kane's guilt only rose, never had he felt such awful feeling before, probably cause when he stole something he was never around to see the consequences of his actions, it was the first time he saw someone so devastated, and it was because of what he did, he let out a sigh that only he could hear.

"Something….troubling you?" He asked her, he didn't want to outright admit he had stolen, but he had an alternate way of twisting this narrative.

The young girl looked up at him with a surprised expression, she quickly shook her head.

"No no, it's fine I just… lost something important." She said, the sadness returning to her face, staring at her own boots, kicking the tip against the floor.

"Well…. what did you lose?" Kane asked, trying his best to be subtle about it, without raising any suspicions that he was the thief that stole her emblem.

"I lost my emblem, it's shaped like a rose, and it's silver." She started off. "Well more specifically, it was my mother's, she was a huntress, like how i'm trying to be, i promised her i would become one, become just like her someday… and that emblem is the last thing i have to remember her, or rather was, until i lost it."

Kane's guilt had officially reached its peak, not only did this emblem have sentimental value, but it had come from a deceased family member of the young girls family, never in his life had be felt such shame and disgust at himself, a feeling that was kinda new to him, he never really cared how his action affected others before, but seeing the girls suffering, he could not help but to wonder how many people felt just like her because of him, he quickly waved that train of thought away, and reached for his pocket, and he pulled out the silver rose that he had shamelessly stolen from her.

"Would it happen to be just like this one?" he asked the young girl. As she looked at the object Kane had in his hand, her eyes widened, she looked at the emblem for a few seconds before forming the widest smile Kane had ever seen. "I found it on the floor, i wanted to give it back to the owner, but in that whole crowd it was kinda hard to." He lied to the best of his abilities, luckily the girls didn't seem any wiser as Kane gave the emblem back to her.

She attached it back to her waist, looking at the silver rose with a radiant smile, she looked back at the man that gave it back and she hugged him with all the might she could harness.

"THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!" Kane was caught off guard at the sudden change of attitude, her whole personality seemingly taking a 180 as she went from sad and despairful to cheery and joyful in a matter of seconds. "I don't know what i would have done without your help, you're a lifesaver, if you ever, and i mean EVER, need any help just call my name, it's the least i can do after this!"

"That's cool and all, but right now all I want is my personal space back, if you don't mind." Kane was not used to any kind of physical contact, leading a mostly solitary life, so this amount of proximity left him incredibly uncomfortable. The girl chuckled awkwardly to herself and she let go of him, only noticing now the sudden action she took. "Besides, i can't really call your name, if i don't have a name to call you."

"Right, you're absolutely right, we are… still strangers after all, eh eh… sorry." The young girl played around with her fingers, head tucked into her shoulders, wearing her awkwardness on the surface before recomposing herself and extending her hand to the young man. "My name is Ruby, Ruby Rose, pleasure to meet you."

The young man chuckled at the antics of Ruby, despite it all, he was starting to find her quite affable to be around, at least he wasn't the only socially inept person in this ship, he shook Ruby's hand with his own.

"Kane Valdos, guess it was good fortune we just happened to meet." Kane introduced himself to her, Ruby's eyes quickly darted to his waist as she spotted the weapon that Kane possessed, her silver eyes glowing brightly at the sight, Kane could almost see stars forming in her eyes as her face got closer and closer to the weapon.

"Is that your weapon? It looks like some sort of bat, OH! I bet it has a secondary function right? Perhaps the top of it shoots out a energy beam, or an explosive, *gasp* OR AN EXPLOSIVE ENERGY BEAM!" In a quick instant Kane found himself overwhelmed by the red hooded girl's gushing over his weapon, seemingly analyzing it and making assumptions just by looking at it. This sudden change in her attitude was completely unexpected, from a sad, nervous girl, to a cheery, bubbly kid gushing over weapons. "Actually on closer inspection, the bottom part of the weapon seems to be detached from the top part of the weapon, i'm guessing that by twisting the han-"

"Do you wanna hold my weapon instead?" Kane interrupted her tirade about his weapon, he wasn't annoyed by her excitement, but he figured that if he'd just hand the weapon to her, it would be easier for her to just analyze it at her own pace. Instead Ruby's face started to turn red with embarrassment, she attempted to hide her face with her hood avoiding eye contact with Kane.

"O-oh my, but we don't even know each other that well, and… your already handing me your weapon?" She said shyly, fidgeting around with her cape and softly kicking the ground with the tip of her foot.

"...Uh?..." It was all Kane could muster, left confused, as if he had just suggested the lewdest thing imaginable to this girl. And Kane understood that Ruby Rose was one of those weird people he mentioned to himself back at the landing site.

"RUBY!" the suddenly in a flash of yellow, the blonde girl from before, the one Kane had seen shadow boxing, tackled the red caped enigma and lifted her up with immense ease, giving her the bear hug of a century.

"y…yang…. can't…breathe…." It was all the poor girl could say as her face grew bluer, a noticeable contrast from her red clothing, the blonde, who Kane guessed must have been Yang, let the smaller of the two land with her two feet on the ground, Ruby's first instinct was to take a few deep breaths, her previous color surfacing back to her face. "Yang Xiao Long! Did you just try to kill your own sister with a bear hug!?" Ruby exclaimed, stomping one foot on the ground as she waved her arms around, Yang gave her a coy smile and caressed the back of her own hair.

Yang was only now able to notice the young man that had been talking with her sister beforehand and turned towards Ruby with a nefarious smile, Ruby grimaced already guessing what Yang was gonna say.

"No Yang, he's not my boyfriend, if you really have to know." Ruby quickly said, shutting down any attempts of Yang teasing her, Yang for her part gave her sister a mocking pout.

"Geez, can't you let your sister have a bit of fun at least." Yang said, then her eyes traced back to Kane and another smile grew on her face, and Kane felt as if a red dot had emerged in his forehead.

"Well then, guess you won't mind if i take my shot at hotstuff over here then, right?" Kane would be proven right as the blonde brawler came very close to him, wrapping one hand around the wild boy and twirling one finger around his chest, Kane for all his street smarts, could not ever had been prepared for a situation like this, so he froze up like a statue, and poor Ruby could only watch in horror and embarrassment and Yang claimed yet another victim of her long list of targets to tease. "Name's Yang, how about you and i end tonight with a bang?"

Yang ended her introduction with a wink, Kane couldn't see his face, but he felt it grow hotter, as if he was using his semblance to increase his body temperature.

Ruby had enough of her sister's antics, and thus she pulled her sister from Kane and started to drag her to the other side of the Bullhead, a surprising feat considering the size difference between the two of them.

"Alright, that's it, Yang Xiao Long you cannot be trusted without any proper supervision, and thus it falls to me, as the responsible one, to reel you in, you are EMBARRASSING ME!" Ruby yelled out as she continued to drag her sister away, Yang for her part only stuck her tongue out at Ruby to further provoke her.

"I'm not so sure about the responsible part sis, you wouldn't want to be spreading false information would you? I have a good amount of evidence that suggest otherwise." Yang told her sister, Ruby for her part only pouted before turning back to Kane as she left with her sister.

"Sorry about my sister Kane, hope to see you around!" Ruby yelled out one last time, Yang for her part waved at the boy and gave one last wink.

Kane gave the duo a wave as well as they blend in through the people aboard, he was left completely flabbergasted by that short experience, and thus he allowed himself some respite by breathing in and out.

But then one detail came across Kane's mind that escaped him during the awkward moment he had with the sibling.

"Wait… sisters? They look nothing alike." he told himself.

"They're an energetic duo that's for sure, with energy like that, they will make for amazing huntresses and rivals." a voice rang out behind Kane, he jumped backwards, quickly facing the source of the sounds, he recognized the owner of the voice as the tall man that had barraged him with questions, Kane despaired, Ruby was energetic, but she was manageable, Yang was teaseful, but at least Ruby was able to crash that before it reached critical levels, but this guy? Kane felt he would not have the same luck as before.

"Oh… it's you, Ragni right?" Kane asked warily.

"Yep, I'm flattered you remember, I didn't imagine you'd remember." He gave out a heartfelt chuckle, Kane let his guard fall a bit, he didn't give off any bad vibes, if anything the guy seemed like an upstanding sort. "I realize now, I may have come off too strong during our introduction. I apologize. I find that hyping myself up is a great way to deal with my nerves."

"How about we introduce ourselves again, this time a bit more calmly." Ragni extended his hand towards Kane with a smile on his face. "Ragni Slifnir, from Northern Vale, pleasure to meet you."

Kane chuckled to himself, he found himself won over by Ragni's honest and optimistic attitude, he stuck out his hand and shook it.

"Kane Valdos, nice to meet you." he said with his own smile across his face.

"Also, no need to apologize, I think we're all a bit nervous." Kane said, assuring the gentle giant.

"Right? I mean, Beacon Academy, even amongst all other academies, Beacon is special you know? Numerous huntsmen and huntresses of prestige studied at Beacon, to think we have the opportunity to leave Beacon on their level and maybe even beyond! The thought is exhilarating, but also quite nerve wracking. Not to mention it's home to the Cross Continental Transmit System!"

"The Cross Continental what now?" Kane looked at Ragni obliviously, and Ragni for his part looked with wide eyes, as if Kane had declared that the sun was blue.

"You don't know? Well, to put it shortly, the CCT, short for Cross Continental Transmit, is a large information network that allows for large scale communication across all the four kingdoms, its foundation has become an essential part of co-operation not only between the academies, but the kingdoms as well, it's widely regarded as the most innovative and influential technology of all time!" Ragni explained, showing a great deal of amount of passion behind his sharing of knowledge, evidenced by the wide smile he sported across his face.

"Hmm, I see." Kane for his, had a thoughtful look to his face as he nodded comprehensively, with a grin on his face. "I understood most of those words." He said with the utmost confidence.

A noise suddenly pulled Kane away from his thoughts, as both he and Ragni turned to the source of the noise, a large hologram showing the news, currently it was telling of the nefarious criminal, Roman Torchwick, who still eluded all authorities, asking for any information and to contact the Vale Police Department.

"Pfft yeah, good luck with that, you're gonna need a miracle worker if you want to catch Roman Torchwick out of all people." Kane thought to himself, being a street rat, and loosely affiliated with the underground criminal scene, Kane knew very well who Torchwick was, as did anyone involved with crime, guy was a legend, former second in command of the Spiders, one of the very few man to leave that group with his live, and probably the only one to make it big, he embodied the classical, gentleman villain aesthetic, only Roman was the real deal, numerous heists, millions of Lien, and only caught a handful of times, and even then, he'd always find a way out, either by exploiting the legal system, or by his own hands, and from what Kane had heard, he had a real tough bodyguard, robbed criminals aspired to be like the guy, but there would only ever be one Roman Torchwick.

The hologram then shifted to another topic, this one brought more of a sour taste to Ragni, a peaceful protest of Faunus Civil Rights, turned violent because of the meddling of the White Fang, he gritted his teeth and clenched his fists, a detail that Kane noticed and found himself surprised, the gentle giant was not as gentle as he first thought.

"The more people try and change things, the more they seem to stay the same…" Ragni commented with a sad tone to his voice, the faunus was always a uncomfortable topic of discussion for most humans, while many efforts and laws had been put in place to protect the faunus minorities of Remnant, the root problem was not in the law, but in the people, believes are hard to break apart, especially when they are one thousand years in the making, even if people claim to not hate the faunus, the millennia long propaganda and slander always had an effect on the sub-conscious of people, whether they notice it or not, the White Fang had originally been a peaceful organization established to fight for the rights of every faunus, but a couple of years back, the organization took an extreme turn as they resorted to more direct and confrontational approaches, even being labeled as terrorists by most individuals, but it was working, people respected the faunus more, even if that respect was solely out of fear of retaliation.

Kane personally didn't have a problem with the Fang, if the big man kicks you, you kick back, that much was simple, the real losers here thought were the unaffiliated Faunus that didn't want to join the White Fang, they were cornered by a wall and a sword, life like a normal civilian, and you will probably be treated like a subhuman for a good part of your life, join the Fang, you get labeled a terrorist and criminal.

The transmission then shutdown, and in its place a figure emerged from the hologram, Kane grimaced at the sight of the woman that utterly humiliated him in their fight, if you could even call it that.

"Hello, and welcome to Beacon." Professor Glynda Goodwitch started. "My name is Glynda Goodwitch, you are amongst a privileged few who have received the honor of being selected to attend this prestigious academy. Our world is experiencing an incredible time of peace, and as future huntsman and huntresses it is your duty to uphold it, you have demonstrated the courage needed for such task, and now it is our turn to provide you with the knowledge and the training to protect our world."

The hologram then disappeared, leaving a fuming Kane to glare at the spot with absolute fury.

"Damn you Glynda, i'll have my rematch soon enough…" he muttered loud enough for Ragni to hear.

Ragno laughed awkwardly, rubbing the back of his hand, slouched slightly forward, he took a look at the view through the window and a smile re-emerged.

"Well my new friend, if you need a visual example of the CCT, then look outside." Ragni pointed casually to the window with his thumb, when Kane looked at the view, his eyes widened.

Situated on a cliffside, stood a massive tower that loomed the entire landscape, taller then any building in Vale, it was surmounted by numerous green lights, as well what seemed to be a clockwork system of many cogs are gears, looking at the bottom of the tower, Kane was able to see numerous building connected to the tower, tracing to the exit, he followed what seemed to be the main hall into what seemed like a docking bay of sort, where there were other Bullheads already.

"Welcome to Beacon Academy Kane." Ragni told his newly made companion as the two looked on, enjoying the current moment of the majestic view.

The moment was however interrupted thought by the noise of a boy in pain, Ragni and Kane took notice of the blonde knight as he was looking down, posture slouched and holding onto the wall, when he turned to the bystanders, he showed clearly his ill being, his face was pale, and cheeks puffed, as if he was about to throw up, then without any warning the young knight rushed towards the exit, the exit that was in the path of Ragni and Kane, the pair mistook the situation and the knight coming towards them, the two of them looked at each other in horror, their jaws wide open and letting out a terrified yell and they ran the other direction, where the exit also was.

"G-get the hell away from me! I'll kick your ass!" Kane yelled out, his voice shaking with fear.

"I don't want to start the semester with vomit on my clothes, have mercy!" Ragni yelled out sprinting faster than ever.

The turbulent trio just happened to run past Ruby Rose and Yang Xiao Long, the sisters looking at the three with uncertainty.

"Guess the view isn't for everyone." Yang commented.

"It was nice while it lasted." Ruby tried to be optimistic of the situation.

"I wonder who we're gonna meet." Yang wondered, she couldn't help but to smile at all the future memories to be made.

"I hope they are better than Vomit Boy." Ruby then looked down and noticed a tragic detail in Yang's footwear that made her face twist.

"Oh, Yang, gross! You got some puke on your shoe." Ruby told her sister, Yang's expression suddenly turned a 180 as she looked down in disgust.

"Gross, gross, gross, gross." The blonde brawler despaired, turning to her sister for help, but Ruby for her part tried to avoid her.

"Get away, get away, get away!" Ruby yelled out as she ran to the exit as well.

They had finally made it to Beacon Academy.
