Instructions

Evilregal13 asked for a oneshot of Snowing finding out English isn't Emma's first language.

"I can't make head nor tail of these stupid instructions." Charming grumbled, tossing the leaflet to one side. He and Snow had bought a new TV stand online, and the instructions inside the pack were all in a foreign language.

"Here, lemme see." Emma said, picking the piece of paper up from the floor. She looked over it briefly and nodded.

"First thing's first, take tube A and screw one and join them." Emma said. She looked up to see both her parents ogling her. "What?" She asked. "I'm good at DIY."

"Yeah, not that. When did you learn to speak…whatever language that is?" Charming asked. Emma shrugged.

"It's Russian. One of my foster family's was Russian. It was just a lot easier learning Russian to communicate with them. You pick up other languages quicker when you're a kid." Emma explained. "No big deal. I was with them for nearly a year so I had a lot of time to pick it up."

"And you still remember it all this time later?" Snow asked. "Emma, being able to speak a second language is impressive enough without being able to read one fluently." Snow said, feeling very proud. Her girl was intelligent.

"Really, not that big a deal. They didn't speak a whole lot of English and they were nice. It was rare to get a nice family so I wasn't wasting my opportunity. The smile faded from both Charming and Snow's faces. With everything they learned about Emma, there was a reminder of her horrific past. It was just something they had to accept as part of the consequences they faced for putting her through the wardrobe.
