(A/N): Howdy ya'll. Ya boy is back from the dead with another chapter of Second Chance. Creds and thanks go to AbandonedRookery for being my Beta Reader for this chapter and going above and beyond in helping me with this chapter. Now without further ado, ENJOY!
"Hey pops, where you want this box?" I yelled upstairs to Tukson, who responded in kind.
"Put it in the back, kid, and remember to separate the boxes by categories. Got it?!"
Rolling my eyes, I went to the back and laid the box underneath a shelf taped with the name, Romance, on it. Wiping the sweat off my head, I stood up.
"Why you still gotta remind me like I'm a 5-year-old pop?"
"Because your memory is worse than my Grandmama's, and she had ALZHEIMERS!"
I stood up and walked out of the room with a grin on my face, giving a quick chuckle. Months have passed since I had been reincarnated on Remnant and I can say, with pure confidence that I rarely get, it's been pretty damn good so far. Tukson started to treat me like I was his genuine son. Granted, he took me in, sent me to train with the awesome "musketeers", and got my ass handed to me over and over during training…
I am getting better though - a lot more in fact - but I'll touch on that in a second. Anyway, I feel as though I have come a long way from when I got here. I have finally learned the trick of the trade in the bookstore, as it took a while to learn how to multi-task around this bookstore. For example, when I'm alphabetizing certain books that came in and then having someone at the counter, who had JUST walked into the store and demanded to be seen, being impatient as hell waiting for a book. I had to drop the books, ruining the covers because they fell on a fresh coffee stain that I had forgotten to clean up, and when I ran over to help them, they had the nerve to claim that I had given poor customer service.
I must point out that is complete bullshit, but hey, to each their own, I guess. When I tried to help them, they gave me attitude because apparently, they didn't like that, not only was I not behind the counter, but the bookstore looked like garbage to them.
I would have been two seconds from cracking his jaw had it not been for Tukson coming down and telling the guy off, saying that not only do I keep the store in tip-top shape, but I also go above and beyond with dealing with dumbass people here and there. Company included. The guy just left, screaming that he will shut us down, but nothing came from it.
And yes, that happened two days ago, and I'm still kinda pissed about it but fuck it. Not like the guy is rich like the Schnees, but hey, he did act like Jacque. Arrogant and so full of himself that it made you wanna break every single bone in his body. But if he were to attack Tukson or me, the guy is walking out of here in a stretcher.
Rolling my eyes at the recent memory, I cracked my knuckles before grabbing the cleaning supplies from underneath the counter and made a beeline outside to the windows.
Ah, the windows. Oddly enough, it's my favorite pastime/chore. I never really understood it, but just cleaning the windows helped keep me calm, helped me relax, and helped me deal with that perverted mind that Sapphire was talking about. I wasn't ogling her like I used to, but I can't help but steal a glance from time to time. I'm a guy, okay, don't judge me. STOP JUDGING ME, DAMMIT. SHE'S HOT FOR FUCKS SAKE!
Pinching my nose and huffing out a breath, I shook my head to get rid of the impure thoughts that were coming into my head and went back to cleaning. Speaking of Sapphire, the training that she, Gem, and Jade are giving me is starting to pay off. I started noticing in the mirror in Tukson's bathroom that my chest is getting bigger and squarer. My arms are getting larger and more toned, and I saw a six-pack of abs showing in my abdomen. Gotta thank them for making me look like more than some farm boy. Thank god the zits are gone in my face.
But, throughout the year, they decided to ramp up my training suddenly. I'm not too sure why, but I've noticed that their attitudes are slowly starting to change as well. Gem, the group's perkiest guy, started becoming more aggressive when he talked to me, sometimes flat out ignoring me and going straight into training me.
Jade started to train me at night, personally. I literally went into the back room at night because I had heard a noise and got punched in the face by him. He responded that I needed to be trained harder so, from then on, he'll just pop in the back room at random and train me.
Sapphire is a rather… peculiar case to be quite honest. Nothing seems off about her, but she gives off an aura that is kinda scary at times. She still teases me by calling me a pervert, but something just feels off about all of them.
Swiping the sweat off my head, I looked all over the window, making sure it was clean. Nodding in approval, I got my stuff, went back inside and placed the cleaning supplies back into their rightful place.
That was my last chore of the day and thinking back, I'll probably talk to Tukson about what's been going on with Gem, Jade, and Sapphire. Hopefully, it isn't something bad or a situation that they can't handle themselves. A part of me hopes that I can help them. They did so much for me, so the least that I can do is pay back the kindness, and hopefully paying it back in full.
Hearing the door jingle, I smiled at the new customer walking into the bookstore. Now, to start my other favorite part of the day, being a regular bookstore clerk.
"Welcome to Tukson's Book Trade! My name is Alex; how can I help you?"
To this day, I still hate using that no-brainer cliché line. Shit gets annoying to say, especially with everyone seeing the damn SIGN on the window and the building itself!
(Sapphires P.O.V)
Stretching in the downward dog position, I breathed in slowly and breathed out. Dipping my head down and putting my legs together, I dipped down and went into the cobra pose. Breathe in. Breathe out. My morning routine always started with 45 minutes of stretching to initiate blood flow around my body and pop any joints that needed to be popped.
The calm mood was destroyed when there was a knock at the door. Rolling my eyes, I got up and walked to the door. Opening it, I was greeted to the sight of Gem, who looked like he had just woken up from a hangover.
"Couldn't sleep well again, Gem?"
Leaving the door open for him to enter, I walked over to my bed and sat down. He closed the door behind him and sat down at the far side of the bed.
"Couldn't sleep."
Confirming my suspicions, he buried his face in his hands and groaned. I sat next to him and draped my arm over him, bringing him close. This has been happening for a few weeks now since we had a run-in with…. him. To be quite honest, while we did put up a good fight, Gem was the one that almost got killed by his sword.
"You put up a good fight Gem. Don't bring yourself down."
He looked at me and glared.
"Bring myself down?! I almost DIED, for fuck sake!"
Smacking him upside his head, I put a finger right in his face.
"Don't yell at me, mister! I'm trying to comfort you. What I mean is: don't let what happened take a toll on you. You haven't been sleeping well, you aren't eating as much as you used to, and don't think I haven't noticed when you treat Alex like shit sometimes!"
Raising my voice at the mention of Alex, I let out a breath before pinching my nose in frustration.
"What is it with you and Alex? You seem to be talking about him a lot now."
I punched him in his shoulder, and I shook my head.
"Nothing is going on between us. We've been training him for a year now, and he's a natural at it! He's been giving us a workout and actually making us break a sweat. He's taken everything we've taught him, and he's a natural at it!"
Turning to Gem, I glared at the smirk on his face.
"So, he's a natural, huh? Does that include the bedroom?"
"WE NEVER BROUGHT HIM HERE!"
"SO, YOU HAVE THE TALL GRASS WHERE WE TRAIN!"
"I HAVE RESPECT FOR HIM. FUCK YOU GEM."
"NO THANKS, THAT'S ALL FOR ALEX!"
There was a short silence, which turned into chuckling, and chuckling turned into laughter. I quickly composed myself and looked at Gem.
"I-I think we both needed that. You?"
He let out a deep breathe.
"No objection here. But in all seriousness, how are we going to deal with him?"
I shook my head.
"Nothing. What happened a few weeks ago was a mission gone wrong because we weren't supposed to run into the White Fang. We weren't supposed to be even near that Dust mine."
After leaving the increasingly radicalised and violent White Fang, the three of us were marked for death. We would have been caught in the middle of the night, had Tukson not found us in a shitty hut in the forest. When I questioned him, Jade cut me off; he and Tukson were old friends, and Tukson was another Faunus who left the White Fang as he had also noticed everything in the White Fang turning to shit.
He found us a place to stay - an old, abandoned house a few miles from where we would train, on two conditions. The first was that we would make the house as comfortable as possible. The second was that we owed him a favor. That favor in a year would be training Alex. The house was the closest thing to home that the three of us could get and were ever going to get.
"Why did Jade have us near that dust mine anyway?"
"I don't know; he didn't mention anything. Why don't you ask him?"
He shrugged.
"I don't question him. I just wonder where he keeps getting these jobs and who employs us. We didn't exactly get all this for free." He gestured all around us.
He did have a point. A year before we started training Alex, we were all looking for jobs to turn our home into something homier. But one day, Jade came to us and said someone from Atlas gave us a job for an indefinite amount of time with great pay. All we had to do was spy on our favourite fanatic and extremist group, the White Fang. That's what we've been doing for the past two years, and we're able to make this old ass house into something habitable and comfortable.
"All we know is what Jade tells us, and that's it. Leave it be, Gem."
Frowning, he got up and made his way to the door.
"I'll cool it with Alex. I'm just stressed thinking that we will wake up with our throats slit by his sword one day. We need to be ready in case he ever shows up on our doorstep."
Jade left and closed the door behind him. I stared at my door for a couple of seconds and sighed. He was right. Even though Alex was almost up to par with Gem, I knew he wasn't up to par with either Jade or me. With more training, he will surpass all of us, if only he can get rid of that perverted mind of his! All he does when sparing with me is he either gets too close to my ass, stares at me, and on a few occasions, drooled when I entered the room. But he has been getting better at keeping himself in check. And it's not like I don't mind him staring…
My cheeks reddened immediately, and I smacked them gently. WHY would I EVER think that? He's improving, and it can't happen! I'm a Faunus, and he's a human. Nothing more, nothing less. End of the discussion.
…
…
W-Well, to be honest, he has got some meat on his bones after a while. He finally is wearing some workout gear instead of jeans and shirts. Even through all his sweat, I can make out his six-pack of-NO. NO MORE. NO MORE THOUGHTS. FRIENDS. THAT'S IT!
I need a drink. Getting up and changing into something casual, I grabbed my leather jacket and headed out into the night. If memory serves right, Alex says he works at a bar called Junior's. I growled. If it's the Junior I think it is, he better not hurt him or I'm slitting his throat!
…
On second thought, make that two drinks.
(Alex P.O.V)
"HEY BARMAID, ANOTHER DRINK OVER HERE!" laughed a man, but once he saw my face after that comment, he winced and stumbled his way to the dance floor.
I sighed. That is another downgrade to working at Junior's: random ass people having no goddamn respect. Granted, I'm not going around demanding respect, but if I'm serving you a drink, the least I ask for is some courtesy. But what the hell am I talking about? It is a club for god's sake. Once people got that liquor courage in 'em, any type of sense they had gets thrown out the window.
"Hey handsome, how are you?" Melanie purred as she strutted up to the bar.
I gave my usual smile, but I was annoyed on the inside. Ever since that first incident with Melanie trying to seduce me at the bar, it became a regular thing. It started small, just like this, being flirty with me, which I returned with kindness, but it began to get a bit more physical over the past few weeks.
Like when I was working on drinks for some guys that were waiting patiently and then suddenly felt someone grab my ass. I yelped and turned around ready to beat the shit out who did that but instead deadpanned at Melanie who just smiled.
"Damn stud, relax. Just having a little fun is all."
I deadpanned as she walked away. Christ, can this girl get the gist that I am not interested? Like fuck, at first, it was alright, but now it's slowly getting on my nerves.
"I'm good Melanie. The usual?"
"Yes, please."
Nodding, I turned and started making her drink as she sat back in her chair, one leg over the other.
"So, I wanted to ask Alex, are you free tonight? Junior is giving my sister and me an early night off, and I wondered if you wanted to go and catch a movie? Maybe afterwards we can go up to my apartment and have us a little fun?"
She leaned on the counter, showing off more of her breasts than usual. Finishing up her drink, I gave it to her and gave a light shrug, holding in my urge to NOT look down at her breasts. I must have SOME type of self-control. Like damn, I am not some random pervert just ogling every woman that I see! I HAVE STANDARDS DAMNIT. Shaking my head, I met her eyes and smiled.
"Sorry Melanie, but right now I'm not really looking into getting with someone now. Right now, I just want to work on myself until I can open up to someone."
She frowned as she finished her drink and set it down on the table. Taking it, I began cleaning it until I heard a huff coming from her.
"What's the matter with you, Alex?" She asked as I raised an eyebrow.
"What do you mean?" She glared at me.
"Since you started working here, all I wanted was for us to go somewhere more than just co-workers, but you continuously ignore my advances! Am I not your type? Am I doing something wrong?!" Her voice rose, causing the people sitting next to her to hurry away.
"Nothing is wrong with you. I just do not want to date you because I don't want my personal life to interfere with my work. Please can you respect that?" I said in a calm tone, hoping to calm her down.
Hell hath no fury than a woman's scorn. That old saying was something I learned back in High school. Right now, I am witnessing the real-life rendition of that quote. How? Because Melanie looked fucking PISSED. If looks can kill, I would be dead ten times over right now. Her glare tore through me like a knife, and her hands were shaking due to her nails digging into her palms and blood coming out. But then, she gave off a smile that sent a shiver down my spine.
"Oh Alex, I wonder what will happen if I tell Junior that you should no longer work here? What if I tell him all the bad things you have done while working here? It wouldn't paint you in a good light, now would it?"
I took a step back.
"But I never did anything bad though. I worked my ass off on this job, and besides where's your evidence backing up these claims?"
She giggled.
"If you remembered correctly, Junior is my uncle. I can say whatever I want, and he would take my word for it like a dog on a bone. That is, unless we go upstairs right now, and you ravage me until I beg you to stop."
My eyes widened, and my cheeks burned from her last statement. This girl isn't crazy; she's bat-shit fucking insane! Right before I could say anything, a hand landed on Melanie's shoulder and grabbed her tight.
"I would recommend you walk away now or else I'll make sure you never speak again."
Melanie's eyes grew large in shock and fear as she slowly turned around and stared at a Faunus who was smiling sadistically at her. Looking over, I sighed in relief.
"Hey Sapphire, finally decided to come by and grab a drink?"
She nodded.
"I was hoping for a pleasant evening until I overheard this whore…" Her grip tightened, and Melanie squirmed under her grasp. "…try to force you into a bad situation. Would you like me to handle her?"
Melanie's face paled as Sapphire's eyes turned an evil shade of black. Shaking my head, I took her hand off Melanie.
"Nothing needs to be done here; Melanie knows her lesson now, don't you, Melanie?"
Her eyes widened as I leaned in, glaring into her soul. I jabbed a finger in her face.
"Don't you ever threaten me again, and don't even think about telling your sister about this. Junior may be your uncle, but I know he will be plenty pissed at the fact that his club got destroyed."
Leaning back, I folded my arms.
"Take this as a warning. Have a good evening."
She ran off into the crowd, making sure she wouldn't be found for a while.
"Sorry about that, she can be very…audacious."
Sapphire deadpanned.
"That's being nice. I heard what she said. She's a temptress for Oums sake!"
I shrugged.
"True, but I don't let it bother me as much. But after what just happened, I gotta let my boss know. I ain't trying to lose my job."
She nodded as she sat down.
I didn't notice until she sat down, but she looked amazing as always. She wore a pair of dark blue skinny jeans with a pair of black and white sneakers. She had on a black form-fitting shirt and to top it off, a black leather jacket. Holy shit…W-Wait, TIME OUT DOG. SHE'S IN FRONT OF YOU DAMMIT.
"Take a picture. It lasts longer."
Blinking, I saw her stare back at me with a grin.
"Also, you're drooling."
My eyes were the size of fucking plates as I brushed my hand on my chin, frowning as I felt the drool on my hands. I excused my self as I went to wash my hands, my cheeks and ears burning from embarrassment. Coming back, I found her resting her head in her hand, a smile plastered on her face.
"Whatever you order will be on the house if you forget what you saw." She perked up from hearing that and began to scour the menu.
"Let me get a Moscow Mule, please. Make sure it's strong; Gem gave my ass a headache."
"What else is new?" I chuckled as I turned around and began making her drink.
Even though the drink itself sounds basic, it's actually in some ways both difficult and easy to make, but it's a kick in the ass once you drink it. After completing her drink, I went off to handle the other customers but also kept a close eye on her. The reason being is because I have never really seen her drink, so I don't know if she a lightweight or not. Not saying she can't handle her liquor, but you never know. Once I came back around to her, she was just finishing the remains of her drink. Once she set it down on the table, I picked it up and began to clean it quickly.
"Once you're done with that, can you make me another one? It tasted pretty good."
Nodding, I placed the cup that I was cleaning onto the rack, dried up my hands and began making Sapphire another drink. Once done, I passed it to her, and she took it and brought it up to her lips. But right before she took a sip, she looked at me.
"Do you have any place secluded in the club right now? A lady should have a drink that's nowhere near these fools." She said, motioning to the other people next to her, who glared at her in response.
"Yup, just take those stairs over there at the end of the bar and head up. There's a guard up there because it's V.I.P, but say my name, and he'll let you in. I'll bring another glass to you in a minute."
She nodded and got up.
"Then when you do, see if you can take a break. Let's talk for a little bit if you want?"
My eyes widened, and I felt my cheeks burn.
"Uh, Sure." I stuttered as she nodded and headed off to the V.I.P section, leaving me to deal with the rest of the patrons.
This, in all honesty, wasn't at all bad. Chatting with them and hearing about their day while also getting some laughs in was nice. This was especially true when they told stories about themselves or their past, which always seemed to captivate me. It was also an excellent chance to get my foot out of my ass! Especially if I'm about to go upstairs and see Sapphire, which made me nervous because it would be the first time that it's just her and I…. Easy Alex…just talk to her. Nothing wrong with that and shit, it's the perfect opportunity to get to know her better. Yeah, I think I'll do just that.
After finishing up with the patrons at the bar, I signaled to Junior, who was upstairs in his office, that I was taking my break. Nodding, he waved me off as I grabbed a tray that had Sapphire's drink and made my way upstairs. Making my way past the guard, I found her in a booth at the end of the balcony. She sent a small smile my way as I made my way towards her and put the tray on the table.
"My compliments to the bartender. He can make a mean cocktail."
I grinned as I sat down.
"Thanks. It took me a while to make that drink. Simple yet difficult in its own right."
She smirked, and she switched out her empty cup with the filled one on the plate.
"Could be better, though."
I frowned.
"How so?"
She shrugged.
"Probably a little bit stronger but it's still a good drink. Just next time, you should card someone and check their age before handing out alcoholic beverages. I'm 15, and that could land you in hot water."
My eyes widened, and I cursed. That's what I forgot. SOMETHING SO FUCKING BASIC.
"U-um I-it was a one-time thing! Don't ask, don't tell, right?"
She chuckled and waved her hand.
"It's fine, pervert. Besides, a lady needs a drink now and then."
Rolling my eyes, I sat back down and crossed my arms. Now what? I scratched my head. Yeah, I was never good in the social things of life. Never really talked to females like her until I get that boost in confidence, and let me tell ya, it ain't coming around anytime soon. My palms turned sweaty, and my heart was beating out of my ears. Jesus, say something! ANYTHING!
"…nice weather we're having?"
She frowned, and my cheeks burned as I looked down at my jeans. God damn it…Brain, I fucking hate you with a passion. Nice weather we're having? SERIOUSLY?! But my thoughts were cut off by the beautiful laughter in front of me. Looking up, I see her covering her mouth as she laughed. With a nervous chuckle, I felt my cheeks burned still but not as much as before.
"You weren't much of an outdoor person, were you?" She finished laughing and took a sip of her drink.
"You're not wrong, but I try to, y'know, be more open and to have better conversations without making myself look like an ass."
"You already are an ass from all the beat downs you get from either one of us."
"I'm still ever-improving. Soon, I might be up to your level." I retorted, but she scoffed.
"Don't be over-confident. That'll kill you quicker than any Grimm."
Sighing, I leaned back and crossed my arms as she took another sip of her drink.
"What's your back-story?"
She frowned, and I shrugged back at her.
"Let's be honest. We don't really know each other apart from training and the occasional spar. Why not open the floor up for more? No harm, right?"
She took a minute to collect her thoughts before finishing her drink and leaning back.
"I was born outside the kingdom of Vacuo to a human businessman and a Faunus huntress. At first, my parents loved each other. So much so, they named me after my grandmother, who was the best huntress in the family. My mum was great, but grandma was something else entirely." She chuckled at her memories.
"It was a good life. Didn't have to worry about making ends meet like other families. Mum was away a lot because it was her duty, but I didn't resent her for it. It was her job, a job she loved. Granted, I would have loved for her to be there at the house with dad and me more, but at a young age, I knew why she had to go, even though I never really got the full grasp of it. Mum had to make sure the bad guys and Grimm were kept at bay. That's all I knew at the time." A small smile crept onto her lips but went away quickly.
"Until one day, when all three of us were home, a gang of racist humans barged into our home. My mum did her best to fend them off, almost got the better of them too, if it wasn't for one of them blowing her brains out with a lucky shot to the face. Then, they tied my father and I up and…"
Sapphire paused as her fist clenched, and small tears escaped her eyes. She looked down as she took deep breathes to calm herself. I wanted to help her, but I didn't want to provoke a PTSD flashback or something like that. So, I let her cry.
"…..they made me watch as they tortured my father. They mocked him, saying he was poisoning humanity by marrying a Faunus woman and having a bastard like me. They made me watch a-as t-they slit his t-throat and laughed as he bled out in front of me."
Reaching out, I placed my hand on hers and gave a gentle squeeze. She looked up wide-eyed but calmed down when I squeezed her hand again. She sent a smile my way before I gestured for her to continue.
"But what those animals didn't know was due to all that anger, rage, and stress, I unlocked my semblance. I ended up killing them all at the age of five, and when the cops came, they just stared at this little Faunus child. Her baby blue dress covered in blood, holding her daddy's head in her lap." She sighed. "They threw me in jail, and I stayed in that cold, terrible cell until one day, I was released.
"That's when you joined the White Fang, right?"
She nodded.
"More or less. My dad had a friend who was a lawyer at the time, and by some legal mumbo-jumbo that I still don't understand and some luck, he got me out of there and into an orphanage. But unfortunately, the so-called 'Orphanage' should have been re-named 'Human Orphanage, Faunus Child Labour Camp'. But one of the older children there, who went by a name I'd rather not bring up, told me and others of an organization that is for us. Only us. We escaped that place into the woods, finding some of the White Fang camps in the woods, and the rest is history."
"I'm sorry about your parents."
She waved it off.
"It still hurts, but they will always be with me here." She clutched her chest and gave a small smile.
"When you joined, that's when you met up with Jade and Gem, right?"
She nodded.
"You're spot on. The White Fang needed a small team to fight against human bandits attacking our medical and food convoys we sent out to needy Faunus. So they chose four of us - Jade, Gem, me, and a lion Faunus by the name of Graham. Unfortunately, Graham lost his life when one of our convoys was ambushed, and he took a bullet to the brain because his Aura was shattered. So that left the three of us."
"The musketeers."
She snorted as we both shared a laugh at that.
"What about you? What's your story?"
I shrugged.
"Well, I was born outside the king-."
"Stop."
My eyes went wide when she gave me that command. She shook her head.
"Don't lie to me. I can sense a liar from a mile away. Tukson told us that we wouldn't believe your story even if he told us. So, spill."
I crossed my arms and frowned. Fuck it, she asked for it.
"Before I tell you, please keep an open mind. It's gonna shock you, and it's kinda…out there."
She nodded. I sighed; this outta be good. Right before I could open my mouth, I felt a tap on my shoulder. Looking up, I saw Junior.
"Hey, boss, everything okay?"
"Everything's okay; I just wanted to let you know that your break ends in a few minutes. Finish up whatever conversation you're having with her and give her another drink on the house."
Nodding, I got up, but she grabbed my arm.
"Uh uh, we're not done." I grabbed her hand and took it off my arm.
"I have to get back to work, Sapphire. We can pick this up later."
"Nope, you gotta give a girl something. Can't leave a girl hanging like this, especially if she came through all this trouble just to see you."
My cheeks reddened.
"W-well how about this. You busy tomorrow?"
She put a finger on her chin.
"Nope, not really? Why?"
Somehow, somewhere, to whatever god that made me not stutter when I did this. Thank you.
"Let me take you somewhere tomorrow. I'll explain everything. I promise."
She blinked.
"I-Is this a date?" My cheeks turned even redder when she said that.
"I-If that's what you want. It doesn't have to be. It could just be two people just hanging out. Besides, it seems a little unfair that you gave me your side of the story, and yet I'm leaving you hanging."
Her lips pursed in thought for a few seconds before nodding.
"Okay, it's a date. You want me to wear anything special?"
I shook my head.
"Just casual clothes would be fine."
She nodded as she turned around and walked with me as we made our way back downstairs.
"Looks like I'll see tomorrow. Let me know the time and place?"
I nodded as I went back behind the bar and saw her leave the club, but not before seeing her hips sway more than usual. What a woman…I shook my head as I reached for a bottle of Vodka. It's just a date. What could possibly go wrong? I chuckled before my eyes went wide and I almost dropped the bottle.
It's a date tomorrow, an actual date.
…
…
Fuck me.
