The colours of emotion

bluerose921 asked for a oneshot of Emma's powers growing and her eyes changing colours with her emotions.

"Take the sunglasses off, Emma." Snow sighed. "You're indoors. You look like a wannabe rap singer."

"No." Emma grunted back. She went back to moodily eating her Coco Pops.

"Emma." Charming said warningly. "Listen to your mother. Take the glasses off."

"I said no." Emma repeated herself. Charming wasn't going to put up with this. He reached forward and snatched the glasses right from Emma's face. "Hey!" Emma shouted, trying to grab them back to no avail. Snow and Charming looked into Emma's eyes saw they were the deep red colour she got when she was particularly angry. That shade of red only seemed to appear one week a month but they didn't mention that to Emma. However it did explain the bad temper, and the chocolate cereal for breakfast. Emma's newly developed powers had advantages and disadvantages. One such disadvantage was she could no longer hide her emotions as easily since her eyes acted like a mood ring. They changed colour depending on the mood and the shade deepened depending on the intensity of the mood. Red for anger, purple for love, blue for sadness, green for jealousy, silver for happiness, yellow for fear, orange for surprised, pink for embarrassed and so on. It took Snow and Charming a while to work out this code, but eventually they cracked it all and knew what Emma was feeling. Occationally, like this morning, Emma tried to hide how she was feeling by wearing sunglasses. But all that did was highlight she was feeling something negative. Most of the time her parents would challenge her on the negative emotion to try and sort the issue, but given that they knew the circumstances for this one they would let it slide.

It was interesting seeing where the negative emotions cropped up most. Green appeared a lot when Emma was watching either of her parents interact with Neal. Although a sort of turquoise wasn't uncommon for those circumstances either, letting them know she was sad about it too. Yellow seemed to appear in her eyes when either of her parents had to tell her off about something, or if they seemed angry at her. Deep down she was still terrified they would leave her again.

These little tells were incredibly useful to Snow and Charming. They helped them avoid any situations that might make Emma overly upset. Emma might hate it with a passion, but her parents loved it. Their daughter was finally opening up to them. Whether she wanted to or not.
