It takes a lot of understanding and time in a relationship to begin to understand each other from the most subtle of ways. That's the stage Snow and Charming were at. For them, it hadn't taken overly long to develop the subtle communication, they just seemed to have a connection where words weren't always needed.
They both remembered the first time it had happened. There had been a meeting between them and Maurice French. He wasn't happy with the way transport happened between the kingdoms. He wanted there to be open transport, with no guards or checking points. Snow and Charming just looked at each other. With Regina still around they both knew that wasn't a possibility. They couldn't explain it, couldn't repeat it with anyone else, but they both just knew what the other was thinking by their facial expressions. Specifically, their eyes. It just made sense to them.
Over time, that ability became more acute. They were able to tell all kinds of things from the other without the need for words. They were able to tell when the other thought someone was an ass. They were able to communicate when it was time to attack a specific enemy and exactly how. They were able to communicate their love for each other without a word needing to pass their lips. That was just the way their true love worked. They hoped it would never change.
