Cakebear's, 1982:
Rain, Garvey hated the rain. It usually meant a full house, because everyone was so scared of the rain.
This meant that Garvey not only had to be a janitor, but also had to be a waiter and work hard to get food to people's tables. He was basically working overtime on shit that he didn't need to work overtime for. His job was cleaning, not giving people food and making sure that the guy inside of Cakebear didn't bleed out. The guy inside of Cakebear was careful anyway, the guy watching him was just being paid to stand there. The owners said it was to "ensure safety", but really, the guy was just standing around waiting for something bad to happen and occasionally giving head nods to the children. The guy, whose name in question was Jack, was one of the worst to Garvey, actively calling him names and being the one to start the whole bullying thing in general. Garvey watched as Jack was leaning against the wall, not even paying attention as Cakebear was in front of a group of kids, speaking in some goofy accent. Garvey actually knew a lot about the animatronic itself. Not really why it was created, but its mechanisms were interesting. Cakebear was a springlock suit, Garvey knew that, but he also knew about how the springlock suits worked, specifically this one. The springlock suit was basically a giant wireframe looking endoskeleton that you had to put on. In order to do that, you needed to peel back the fabric of the suit to expose the endoskeleton, and then use some fancy handcrank to loosen the locks to open the suit and allowing you to wear it. It was very advanced for the time, although what weirded him out was his hands. The hands… were four fingered hands.
The person who created Cakebear, the mother of John, wanted to keep Cakebear a cartoon animal. So in order to keep the immersion of the cartoon bear, the suit had grips. Grips that moved the fingers when waving and grips that helped with holding the cake, and allowing the costume performer to press the button under the cake, which allowed it to do its tricks. It was… interesting, but Garvey hated it. It should have just been five fingers and called it a night, it shouldn't be that hard to do. Garvey continued bussing tables while Cakebear stood in front of a crowd of children, Jack off to the side. Jack was just being paid to stand there, it wasn't fair. Why did Garvey have to work on cleaning and delivering food when all Jack had to do was stand there, he wasn't even doing his job, Jack was staring out the window. Cars were zooming by and Freddy's was just as packed as they were. People really were just trying to shield themselves from the weather. Humans were weird like that, Garvey had to admit. They hated going out in the rain and getting wet, Garvey could see people rushing inside Freddy's and the building he was working at, the door would open, some children were giggling and parents looked tired. Hard day at work and they were coming to Cakebear's, Garvey couldn't blame them for being tired. Garvey took out his cleaner and sprayed it all over the table, oh to have a job not working at this dump. Cakebear's Bakery and Diner, as he has mentioned multiple times, was not a fun place to work at. They were already barely making minimum wage, at this point, he might as well go work for Freddy Fazbear's Pizza right down the street, at least there, he might actually get some respect.
"Cakebear! Do a flip!"
Garvey looked over at the pestering kids, Cakebear seemed to gather up quite a crowd, but the person inside seemed to be overwhelmed. Cakebear turned over to Jack, who was sitting down and looking out the window, Cakebear was giving him the sign. "Come on Cakebear! Look over here!" One of the kids grabbed at Cakebear's fur, pulling on it. The fur was surprisingly strong though, but Garvey needed to intervene if Jack wasn't going to do it. But how was he going to do it? Garvey needed to think fast in order to do something, the kids were starting to get angry, their voices getting louder as Cakebear tried to use his cake as a distraction, but the kids didn't seem to care. "Alright kids, why don't you all give Cakebear a break, huh?" Garvey asked, stepping in at Cakebear's side. Cakebear looked over at Garvey, the person wearing the costume seemed to be in shock. "Oh my gosh… it's you!" the children said, now crowding over Garvey. They were all pestering him with either insults, or requests for him to hurt himself. The Cakebear performer still seemed shocked by this, but Garvey shooed him away, motioning him to leave as he had things covered… he hoped.
Alex tapped his finger on the table, at least he got to come to Cakebear's, but he was still grounded. He was required to be here so Garvey could eventually teach him how to mop up the floors. This was bullshit, worse than that, horse shit. How was he in trouble and having to clean up after someone else's mess? "This will teach you about how working as a janitor will be." His mom said, but he wasn't going to be a janitor, if anything, he was going to be running Cakebear's when he was old enough. Maybe he and his wife could run it, give this place a glow up and be better than the restaurant down the street, Freddy's or whatever it was called. Alex could give less of a shit what the place down the street was doing, he already knew what the better establishment was. You couldn't get some delicious pizza and some kick ass donuts at Freddy's could you? You couldn't, only at Cakebear's. Alex's trigger finger twitched as he tapped on the table faster, his friends weren't here. Kyle was sick and Gabriel was at some school thing to boost up his grade. Gabriel was the one that dreamed big out of the two, wanting to get into a fancy school, wanting to grow up and start his own business, he wanted what Alex had, but not born into a rich family like Alex was. Still though, without his friends here and his parents not happy with him, Alex was not happy to be at Cakebear's for once, but that could change. Getting attention always brought Alex a smile on his face but… he couldn't exactly do it now. His parents would get even more mad at him for doing some with Garvey or John, but what if he got someone else to do it? They would obviously need to give Alex credit for this, and of course, he was going to have to give something in return for them. But who to do it? Alex scanned the building, looking for someone to do a silly little prank for him, and he found someone.
She was twelve, brown hair tied into a curly ponytail and had olive skin. She was wearing a black shirt with puffy sleeves and dark blue jeans. She was busy eating a pizza, no one was around her, so her parents were off somewhere else, or she was here alone. It had to be the former, she looked no older than twelve. Nevertheless, she was perfect, and if she got in trouble, all she had to do was deny, deny, and deny. Deny any involvement with Alex, that was the big important thing, he would get super grounded, as his parents called it. He had been super grounded before, it was like he was being watched like a hawk. His dad or mom hovered over him and watched his every move. But if she denied it, there might be a little extra something for her. Alex walked over, sitting down in the booth she was in. "Hey there!" He sounded friendly, but the girl seemed clever. She eyed him with her ocean blue eyes. He could see bags under her eyes, and upon closer inspection, she was doing homework. "What do you want?" she asked. Alex put a hand to his chest and tried to look offended. "What makes you assume that I want something?" he asked. "No one comes up to me to start a friendly conversation, especially someone who looks to be fourteen talking to someone who is eleven years old." Okay, so he was off with the age estimate, she must be tall then. "Can you at least tell me your name?" Alex asked. "Jane." Jane spoke. "Well Jane, how would you like… for a fourteen year old to do your homework?" Alex asked, Jane looked up, dropping her pencil and letting it hit the paper. "What do I have to do?" she asked, somewhat intrigued by the proposition. "You see that kid over there." Alex pointed over to the farthest booth from the two, that was where John was, happily drinking a soda. "Yeah, that's the owner's kid." Jane said, good, she knew some knowledge. "I need you to just… mess with him. Shove him outside in the rain and lock the door, spill his soda, whatever." Alex said, Jane blinked. "... why would I do that to the owner's kid?" she asked. "Because." Alex began, pointing to himself. "I'm Alex Write, the other owner's kid." he said. Jane eyed him and then eyed John. She didn't seem to be going for it, that's when John sighed and took out his wallet, pulling out a crisp five dollar bill. "I'll do your homework and give you five bucks to shove that kid out into the rain." Alex said, holding a five dollar bill. Jane looked at it, it was neat, not crumbled up like how her parents kept their money. She could clearly see Abraham Lincoln's face on it, as well as the other parts of what made up a dollar bill. She took the money and sighed. "I'm on the last page, just finish the problem's I didn't do and show your work as well. I'll be back when I can." Jane said, getting out of the booth and walking over to the boy that was younger than her. Score! And it cost Alex five bucks and at least five minutes of his time doing math problems. Alex grabbed the book and pencil and looked down at the page. He let out a small groan, fractions, he was terrible at fractions.
"Fre-Garvey!"
Garvey turned the moment someone called him by his actual name, he looked over to find someone rushing over to the supply closet. "Finally, I found you." The guy said, he had a buzzcut and was wearing the usual springlock suit uniform, dark clothes so that in case of a springlock failure, blood won't get on your pristine white shirt. He had white skin as well and green eyes. "Yeah?" Garvey asked, Buzzcut questioned him "Why did you cover for me back there?" Garvey wondered that himself, literally all of the employees made fun of him , but he wouldn't wish death upon them. Suffering a springlock failure would not only have one of them die, but would probably shut down Cakebear's for a long while, putting him out of a job. "Cause you were going to get yourself hurt and Jack wasn't doing anything about it. In fact, he scolded me because I was doing 'his job'." Garvey explained, grabbing some more paper towels and some window cleaner. "Yeah well, you really helped me out there, so… I'll try and have everyone else lighten up a little bit on you. No promises." Garvey looked back as buzzcut began to walk away, Garvey himself was blinking. Was someone at Cakebear's… being nice to him? That was impossible, especially at Cakebear's. Garvey liked it though, maybe things were finally turning around for him. He walked over to the window of the building and sprayed it, wiping it down. John was outside, giving him a sad look as he was being soaked in the rain.
Wait what?!
Garvey looked down in shock, dropping the spray and the paper towel as John was outside in the pouring rain. His hair was matted to his head, he looked like he was on the verge of tears. Garvey quickly ran to the door and tried to open it up, but it wouldn't budge. What was going on? Looking at the door, he found that it was locked, turning the small latch to unlock the door, Garvey walked outside. "JOHN!" he screamed as John came running towards him. The two hugged each other as Garvey quickly took him inside. "What happened?" the man asked, the child coughed, turning his head and coughing into his arm. "A mean girl locked me outside! She pushed me out and locked the door! I was out there for a while, and it was really cold!" John said, sniffling. "It's okay, it's okay. Go find your parents, do you know where the girl is now?" Garvey asked. John nodded and pointed to the olive skinned girl at one of the booths at Cakebear's. "I'll take care of it, go." Garvey said, he stood up and walked over towards the girl, grabbing her by the arm. "Hey!" the girl said. "Come with me, now!" Garvey was almost yelling, he dragged the girl away, she didn't fight though, but was grumbling something under her breath. Garvey hated that, he was going to give this kid a piece of his mind. He took her to the backstage room, and pushed her in, closing the door behind him. "Do you want to explain to me why you locked John Write outside in the cold rain?" Garvey asked. "Wouldn't you like to know." The girl whispered, Garvey ignored that as the girl said "You're thinking of someone else." she said. "Don't lie to me, answer my question." Garvey's tone got cold, hoping to scare the girl, but she seemed unphased. "Look, I don't know who you're talking about but it wasn't me." The girl said. "What's your name kid?" Garvey asked as soon as the girl finished her sentence. "Jane." Jane said, she was giving out her name to a lot of people tonight. Jane watched as the man, as most people knew him in Cakebear's, Freakshow, crossed his arms. "Well Jane." Freakshow said. "What if I told you that I could talk to your parents about this, and you won't ever be able to come back to Cakebear's." He asked. "You wouldn't…" Jane said, she loved the food at Cakebear's, it was better than most restaurants in town. If she couldn't come here to eat the food, that would ultimately suck. "Fine! Fine. I was paid five bucks to do it by Alex Write." Jane confessed, before she chuckled. "Easiest five bucks I ever got." She mumbled, but Garvey heard it.
Five bucks?
She did something like that for five dollars?
Rage boiled in Garvey's stomach. "Now I told you what you want to know, now leave me al-" Garvey grabbed the girl as she was walking out. Jane looked nervous as she looked down at her arm. "You're hurting me." she said, looking worried. "Five dollars? YOU LOCKED MY BEST FRIEND OUTSIDE FOR FIVE DOLLARS?!" Garvey gave the girl a shove, throwing her arm as the girl was knocked off balance. She wobbled backwards pretty fast and crashed down on the edge of a table, Garvey heard a deafening cracking sound as the girl's neck hit the table, followed next by her head hitting the corner and she fell to the floor, lying on her back, her brown curly ponytail was stained red. Garvey's eyes widened, his hands stopped making fists and he now looked down at the girl with fear instead of anger. "Jane?" he asked, no response. The girl was looking upward, eyes unfocused as she stared off into nothing. "Jane… funny joke there." Garvey called out again, still no response. Jane's clothes began to stain as Garvey noticed a crimson liquid leaking from where Jane's head rested on the checkered pattern floor. The dark crimson liquid began to pool around the floor as Garvey placed a hand on his mouth. Blood. That was blood. He looked down at his hands, he didn't recognize his own strength and he… he killed the girl. That wasn't what he wanted, he didn't want to kill anyone, he just wanted to give her a scolding and push her to the ground, after that ban her from Cakebear's after talking with the owner. But now… what was he going to do? The back entrance, there's a dumpster out there that he could hide the body in. He just needed to be quick. Garvey rushed out of the room and grabbed gloves, disinfecting wipes, and paper towels, along with a garbage bag. Rushing out of his closet, he found someone going to the backstage. "NOO!" Garvey screamed, running over and slamming the door. The woman yelped, "Garvey! Don't do that!" she said, Garvey's eyes widened. "S-Sorry Mrs. Write." Garvey said. "What's the matter in there? Did you spill something?" She asked. "Yep! Big spill!" Garvey said. "Oh good, I can get Alex to help clean it up with you." Garvey's eyes widened. "Actually… Alex caused the spill, he was messing around with John again in this room, luckily, I got both of them out. I'll take care of it." Garvey lied, Martha seemed to believe it. "Oh he did, did he? I'll talk with him." Mrs. Write walked away. Garvey let out a sigh of relief and quickly walked in and started cleaning up the blood. He checked Jane's pulse while he was there, no pulse. Nothing, he was horrified. Garvey cleaned it up with the paper towels, they got red very easily. Once done, he took the kid and the garbage bags and walked out through the back exit, walking over to the garbage bin. Next to the large green bin with black covers, was the friendly face of Cakebear, he was plastered on the side of the building. Garvey threw the shit away quickly threw the girl in, her legs were dangling out of the garbage bin. "Shit." Garvey said, trying to move the legs out of the way.
"Come on Alex, we're going to talk right out here."
Shit, Mrs. Write and Alex. Garvey bolted through the back door and out into the opening, breathing heavily. Lie, just lie, you are wearing gloves, no one is going to think you did it. Garvey continued telling himself that as he heard a blood curdling scream come from the back. A few moments later, Alex rushed in, getting people out of the building and telling people to call nine one one.
Garvey's Home, 1982:
Garvey started the tape player and pressed the record button. "I haven't used this in quite a bit now. Things have been mostly the same, John has been good to me, even in the darkest of times. Alex is still a jerk and I haven't seen the third Write child, but today… Today was awful. This girl… this girl locked John outside of the building, Alex paid her five bucks to do it. Five bucks, it's weird what today's youth will do for a piece of green paper. She locked John out and when I confronted her about it, it took me threatening her to ban her from entering Cakebear's. When she told me that she did it for five bucks I… I lost control. I didn't mean to, but I pushed her and then she… the blood… I didn't mean to do it. It was an accident, I didn't know my own strength I just…" Garvey sighed, and then continued. "What matters is that John is safe now, we all stayed late because Martha and Peter are going to be shutting down Cakebear's for a bit to try and work something out. This left a stain on them… and it's going to leave a stain on me. But at the end of the day… John is safe, and Alex is going to think twice before he thinks of trying to pull a stunt like that on John again."
Garvey pressed the stop button, ending the recording.
A/N: That will be all for a bit. This ends the first part of the story, which is the origins segment, which covers Cakebear's. The next segment aims to be longer than just three chapters and a prologue because it does tackle quite a bit of content. I'm glad that this story is getting a bit of traction. I'll be honest, I was scared when broke and I couldn't see people reading the story, but I'm glad people are! It means the world to me, Dormitabis is not really the best thing out there and I knew I was going to be under fire when tackling this. I'm hoping you all stick around for when I get back to it! Next time we'll be seeing our favorite golden duo!
