He sighs as he looks at the empty bed - reminiscing about the night she was here just two weeks ago. The way she let him hold her as she fell asleep and how at peace she looked in his arms. A smile comes to his face as he remembers placing a hand on her belly as his settled on the spot and glanced up at her face multiple times as she cuddled further into him every so often. He hadn't slept a wink that night - wanting nothing more than to watch over her in her slumber. And as he thinks of that, he realizes he hasn't slept much at all since that night. The memory of the morning after, an argument starting back up from just moments after she opened her eyes, haunts him.
"Hmm..." She hums as she stretches ever-so-slightly, her body still molded to his. Her eyes remaining shut as he presses a kiss to her forehead - something so familiar and comforting for them both.
"I missed this with you." She murmurs into the crook of his neck and he thinks she even presses the faintest of kisses against his skin.
"I've missed you." He whispers back as he pulls her tighter to him.
"So...you'll come home with me then?" Her hand grips his shirt with the question - showing how afraid she is to hear his answer.
The same crackling from last night returns in his chest as he prepares to push his world away - again.
"Erin, I can't." He's ashamed as he feels tears welling in his eyes at the sight of her crying again. Her own chest quaking as she tries to breathe through the pain.
"Jay." It's a warning - he can practically hear the sadness being pushed down and anger breaking through just with her saying his name. "What do you mean you can't? Why can't you? What's keeping you here?"
"I left for a reason, Erin. I have to catch these guys."
"You said you left and kept this secret to keep me and Terry's family safe. But I know now, so what's the real reason? Why give me those matches at the bank and meet me at the bar?"
"You knowing doesn't change anything. I can't have you mixed up in this."
"I don't want you mixed up in it either, but here we fucking are, Jay." She snaps back as he gets out of the bed and reaches for her arm - taking ahold of her bicep harder than he realizes. The bruises from yesterday cause her to wince and the worrisome noise gets him to let her go quickly.
"I'm starting to think it's not that you can't come home, but that you don't want to." She sniffles and he moves toward her again - wanting to pull her back into him. But she's out the door before he gets the chance.
It was an innocent thought really - that he'd be coming home with her. And it was an understandable reaction when finding out that he wasn't going back to their condo that day.
A knock at the front door startles him from his thoughts and he sets his coffee down. He hasn't heard about any more 'jobs' since that day at the bank, and half the crew was pinched. So part of him wonders if this is someone else, his looks back at the bed once more before moving toward the door.
"Chicago P.D, open up." He hears next. He's surprised to find his brother-in-law on the other side. He fears the worst when he sees the somber expression on his and Adam's faces.
"Jay Baker?" Kevin asks to confirm and Jay just nods at first before verbally stating that's him.
"You're under arrest." Adam adds and Jay looks around. He shakes his head in disbelief.
"Under arrest? I didn't break any laws." Jay acts offended, but he's truly taken aback by the other men's appearance.
"We have you for conspiracy and attempted armed robbery." Kevin shows him a flimsy piece of paper - what Jay assumes is supposed to look like a warrant.
"You've got the wrong guy, and I-"
Adam shakes his head in a way of interrupting Jay. "Turn around and put your hands behind your back."
His Miranda Rights are read to him as Kevin finds pair of shoes and kicks across the floor for Jay to slip on. Jay argues some more as he's escorted out of the apartment.
The ride to the district starts out quiet. Nothing but the sound of the scanner filling in the static here and there. It makes him think that he may actually be in trouble - that one of the guys ratted him out or worse made him. He mulls over the unlikelihood of the latter while also thinking of other scenarios, and with that, his wife comes to mind again.
"Erin, is she ok?" He wants the answer to that first and foremost. Whatever is going on with him and this arrest doesn't matter as long as she's ok.
"She's safe." Kevin nods and that doesn't qualm Jay's nerves. It makes him gulp at the notion that staying away from her - breaking her - both - of their hearts didn't mean she was safe. It gets the gears in his head turning even more and he thinks back to the guys he's been running with and for. He wonders again if they figured out who he really is and why he signed on to work for them.
"What's actually going on?" He asks as he thinks about her safety more and how they, meaning the crew that killed Terry, would have found out about Erin. Both men in the front seats look over their shoulders at him - the expressions on their faces isn't reassuring.
Her hand traces the picture frame of her on her wedding day. The smile on her face in the photo as she walked down the aisle towards her soon-to-be husband then, is almost unrecognizable. It feels like it's been years since that day - since they smiled at each other like that - even though it's only been a few months.
"How long did your dad say you had to stay here?" Nadia asks as she brings in another box while Hailey continues removing the sheets from the furniture that were preventing everything from collecting dust.
"He's not my dad." Erin immediately corrects gently, because while Hank may feel like he's her father, she hasn't considered him that since she was little and it was short-lived. He and Camille divorced soon after the latter took her in. It was a time when she was still scared - terrified even - that she'd go back to Bunny and Johnny. And she'll never forget the way the Voight's would yell at each other - most of the time about her. She remembers him arguing that she'd be nothing but trouble for them. Yet when he'd see her around the house or district he would fake one of his grimacing smiles and pretend that he that cared about her. When her mom passed away, Hank tried to be a shoulder to lean on, but she knows that he would use that against her in some way in the long run. She saw him do it to Camille and Trudy and even the people in her life now. It's why she was hesitant to take him up on the offer to stay here, in her mom's house, the home she grew up and lived in until her junior year in college.
"I'm sorry." Nadia adds when she realizes that Erin gets lost in some not so great thoughts.
Erin just shakes her head. "Don't be. He umm...he didn't say how long. Just told me that I needed to leave my house, and that I could stay here." She replies and Nadia nods. The three of them continue to clean up and dust, making the house more conformable before Kevin brings the girls over.
"Do you remember when your mom called you out for having a crush on my brother back in college?" Hailey grins as she sees a picture of Erin, her, and her brothers from fifteen years ago.
"I don't think we can consider that being called out. She guessed that I liked Will."
"Mama Camille's intuition was like so spot on like my mom's. She knew Jay was who you were actually into."
Erin chuckles at that because she can't deny it. She had never seen her best friend's brother like that until he came home from his first tour during her and Hailey's sophomore year of college. That's when her feelings changed - when she got a glimpse of who he was behind the cocky, sarcastic, hard-ass façade.
The patio door is slid closed, but she doesn't turn to look who's stepping outside. She stays put on under the gazebo as she looks out at the river. The clunking of their feet - lets her know it's not Hailey or her mom.
"My sister's been looking for you." He whispers as he comes to stand beside her.
"I haven't exactly been hiding." Erin replies back - her gaze still not meeting his, despite the fact that his eyes are on her for a few moments. Then in her peripheral she can see as he looks up and around the inside of the structure they're standing as if it's the first time he's been out here.
"I guess she's just not used to you being out here in my spot."
"Since when is this your spot?" She questions as she finally looks over at him.
He huffs lightly and shrugs. "Since my mom had it built."
"You weren't even in the states when she had it built. And I don't think I've ever seen you out here since you got back." She retorts as she gives him a once over.
Jay gestures to himself. "I'm out here right now."
Erin rolls her eyes at him and chuckles.
"I got you to smile." He points out triumphantly.
"Is that why you came out here? To try to get me to smile."
"Yup." He nods causing her to raise an eyebrow at him.
"I overheard my sister saying that your boyfriend's being an ass." His shoulder shrug as he looks in front of them.
"Aww, you care."
He doesn't deny it and she feels her cheeks heat up even more.
"Why?" She wonders after a little bit and he looks at her confused for a moment.
He replies quickly, without missing a beat. "Why wouldn't I? Your smile's not one that should be hidden."
She thinks he's flirting with her, but quickly humbles herself because it can't be. He's her best friend's older brother and he's probably just being nice. Telling herself that does nothing to calm her heart as it flutters in her chest though. It doesn't stop her from blushing even more as she tries to look away from him. "I'm not sure your girlfriend would be too happy to hear you say that."
"I guess it's a good thing she's not here and not my girlfriend anymore." He shrugs as he bottom lip pokes out just a smidge and it causes her to bite back another smile from spreading on her own lips.
"I'm sorry." She hopes she sounds genuine, but truthfully no one liked his girlfriend - well his most recent ex.
He shakes his head as he takes a pull from his beer and brings the bottle back down to sit on the railing in front of them. "I'm not."
She thinks over the right thing to say, because the first thing that came to mind would be toeing the thin line they're already teetering on.
"Jay, let's go." Will yells out the window and the younger brother looks back at her.
"That's so cute, you're blushing." Will makes fun of his brother as soon as he walks through door and the comment makes Erin's cheeks flush even more.
"Shut up, Will" Jay growls as he shoves his older sibling's shoulder.
"What? It's not like she wouldn't have noticed your freckled cheeks being bright ass red." Will argues as he comes to stand between them and slings an arm over both Erin and Jay's shoulders. Her mom walks into the kitchen then and sees as Will continues picking on them.
She remembers her mom questioning her about the older Halstead brother that night in the kitchen as soon as Jay and Will left the room. It made her blush all over again, both because she had a boyfriend and she didn't want to admit she was feeling something new for the younger of the two brothers. The memory causes her heart to ache - it makes her miss her mom. She wishes she was here more than usual and that Jay was, too. It has her thinking about where he is and if he's safe.
He paces in the interrogation room - his feet moving him to and fro like a caged animal as he awaits for the Sergeant to come in and tell him what's going on. What went wrong is still unknown to Jay and he figured the best one to ask is the very person who orchestrated this whole thing. He wishes he could just talk to his brother-in-law about it, as he knows he can trust him, but he's not sure he'll know as much as his boss.
"Halstead, if this is this about the arrest, I'm afraid my hand are tied." Voight demands before he's even made it all the way through the door.
"What the hell does that mean? What's going on? And where's Erin?"
"All you need to know is that she's safe."
"No, that's not all I need to know." He snaps, because while it's great to hear, he needs to know more than that. "Kevin told me she's safe, but you said that before. You told me that she'd be safe if I did this - got close to the crew that killed Terry. So what's changed? Why am I here? And where's my wife?" The table is shoved to the side as Jay rushes the old man. His voice stammering with anger. He feels his blood boiling and the adrenaline coursing through his body is making him more irritable.
"They didn't tell you?" Voight grumbles to himself as he scratches at afternoon shadow along his jaw.
"No, they did. I just wanted to waste more time asking you." Jay remarks bitterly when he calms slightly and a couple minutes pass, making it clear that Voight's question wasn't rhetorical. Hank narrows his eyes at him with the snarky statement.
"Jay, they put a bounty out on you." He tells him and Jay shakes his head as he practically collapses on the side of the table.
