Side Effects

Sam entered the medical clinic. He had signed up to be a test subject for a new drug trial. He had a partial scholarship, but Law School was expensive and he couldn't call home to ask for help. Dean would just tell him to do a credit card scam or hustle other students with a friendly game of pool. If he reached his dad, well his dad probably wouldn't take his call. Most fathers would be proud of the good grades and the hard work it took to be accepted into one of the best Law Schools in the country, but not John Winchester. When Sam had told him the good news John told him that if he left, he shouldn't come back. He was taking a full course schedule and didn't have time for a job, so that left participating in the local drug trials.

"My name is Doctor Lucifer, here is your first check for a thousand dollars," the Doctor stated as he handed Sam his check and prescription and then inserted the needle with the trial drug in his arm.

"Are there any side effects?" Sam asked.

"Nothing serious. You might get a headache, but it should go away in a few days," the doctor explained.

"Thank you," Sam said as he shook the hand of his Doctor. He shuddered as a wave of cold air hit him.

"Sorry about the cold hands Sammy, I run a little on the cold side. This drug should last for six months and then we'll need to begin phase two of the trial," Doctor Lucifer explained.

"Thank you," Sam stated and then he left the clinic.

"Sam, wait up," a brown-haired, blue-eyed young adult called out as they followed him out of the clinic.

"Do I know you?" Sam asked.

"My name is Castiel Novak and I am the nurse assigned to you. You can call me Cas. Here is my number, call me day or night anytime that you have any side effects," Cas explained as he shook Sam's hand.

"Thanks Cas, I'll do that," Sam stated and then left.

XOXOXO

It had been a few days since Sam had started the drug trial. The headaches had started on day one, but they had increased in intensity, then he started hearing voices. The voices in his head appeared to be others praying to angels, god, or both. He had tried calling the doctor but there was no answer. He went back to the clinic, but it was just an abandoned warehouse.

He debated calling Dean but he didn't want to admit to getting played by a supernatural monster by the name of Lucifer. He didn't want to admit that the medication that had been given to him was changing him into something not human. All he had ever wanted was to be normal and now he was a freak. He had been having the same dream or rather nightmare every night since he had been given the experimental drug. In the dream, the yellow-eyed demon that had killed his mom killed Jessica, in the same way. He thought about warning Jessica, but what could he say to her? He had never told her about his mom. He had never told her that he hunted supernatural beings and now he feared that he was one.

He pulled out the card for Castiel and dialed hoping that his number wasn't disconnected either.

"Sammy, it's Cas, what side effects have you started to have?"

"Who are you? I know that you're not a nurse. I've gone back, but there is no clinic, there is no Doctor Lucifer and no record of any experimental drug trial. I need to know what he gave me and you're the only one that is answering me."

"I'll be there soon," Cas stated and then disconnected the line.

"What are you?"Sam asked as Cas appeared in his apartment.

"I am an angel of the lord and we need to talk," Cas stated.
