"Ah, Summer Break…"
My family and friends had just gathered around a grave clad in black, somewhere outside of Gravity Falls.
It read "Stanley Pines: 1948-1982." It hadn't had any flowers on it in a very long time, the grave was dusty and old.
"A time for leisure, recreation, and taking it easy…"
Mabel Pines crossed out 1982 with 2012 with a red marker, her eyes were filled with tears, while the rest looked somber.
"Unless you're…my family."
Mabel Pines burst into sobbing tears, as Dipper hugged onto her. The whole group distraught. The handyman Soos covered his eyes with his hat. Ford pulled onto Dipper and Mabel hugging them both.
"My family fought against ghosts, gnomes disguised as zombies disguised as teenagers, evil kids, demons from other dimensions…but all of that feels pointless…my Great Uncle gave his life to fight off the greatest evil the world has ever known, worst part?...Everyone knows it happened, but…no one knows it was him that gave his life. After all for the past 30 years, he had been masquerading as his brother. To Gravity Falls, Stanford Pines never went anywhere…but for us, Stanley Pines…was gone. He gave it all for no witness, and no reward…I just don't know what to do."
Today, long after that unofficial funeral Dipper was giving this speech about Stan…with his sister right beside him, they looked a bit different since the funeral..Dipper had a bit of facial hair by now, and Mabel's body looked more like Pacifica. Both of them had grown about halfway to Wendy's height.
Sitting in a chair listening to them talk, was Soos. "...I know exactly how you feel, dudes. Mr. Pines..he was like, my real Dad you know?.."
"...He left us, he left me." Mabel struggled not to cry.
Dipper pat his hand on her back "Hey, Mabes. It's okay."
"I don't care about the world! He was my Grunkle, he didn't even say goodbye! He…He…" tears flow out.
Soos hugs Mabel too "Dude, you've been through so much…but if not for what Stan did, we would all have died."
"I…I know that, but.." Mabel's still holding back her tears "..If it weren't for me.."
"Hey, Mabel." Dipper adds "It's not your fault, everyone was tricked by Bill…not just you."
Mabel goes quiet, as Soos is seen packing up his stuff "...I wonder what I'll do without the Mystery Shack, dudes…you think people will mind if I still wear this question mark uniform?..Let the legend live on?"
"..Don't ever stop being Soos, Soos." Dipper cracks a smile, as they both hug onto him.
"We better be getting back to the uh…shack" Dipper tells Soos "...See ya around."
"Of course, dude. Always." Dipper and Soos fist bump, and Mabel puts her fist on top of theirs, still holding back tears.
The Pines Twins wave goodbye to Soos and his Grandma as they head out the door, they slowly walk home..and see the cheerful people of Gravity Falls down the streets, cleaning up the mess left behind from Weirdmageddon, a cheerful atmosphere was had throughout the entire town..the town that did not know Ford from Stan.
Finally, Dipper and Mabel walk inside the building. They see Ford arguing with a customer.
"For the last time, the Shack is closed." Ford sighs "Indefinitely."
"So when can I get my refund?" Tyler suggests "And remember before you say no, I'm the Mayor."
"Sigh…okay, what would you like refunded?" Ford asks.
"I bought a puma shirt, but I think now I'd really rather have a panther shirt." Tyler tells him.
Ford's eye twitches, before e hands him a whole box of shirts Stan was selling "Here, take this. Go crazy."
Dipper and Mabel walk in.
"Well if it isn't the little heroes!" Tyler says.
"Yeah, we…we're them." Mabel replies.
"We got em, got em!" Dipper says, trying to force a smile.
"Before you two go, I just want to let you know your contribution to this will never be forgotten." He leans down, ruffling their hair "Take care, twins."
As the Mayor leaves, Dipper and Mabel look to Ford.
"You're giving Stan's stuff away?!" Mabel shouts.
"No, not all of it. Just the merchandise." Ford promises "Everything Stan owned will be kept by one of us, I promise I'm..not going to let him be forgotten by his family."
Mabel calms down "Okay…thank you, I guess…I guess that's okay."
"I didn't even see Wendy bring back her employee shirt." Ford says, noticing the question mark made for Wendy sitting on a counter.
"Oh, she didn't. She never wore it." Dipper says "..She's been busy packing to… move upstate."
"Ah...Dipper, about my offer." Ford looks over to him.
Mabel looks disgusted for a moment "...Offer?..."
"...Sorry, Grunkle Ford. I'm…I'm going to have to decline, I can't separate from Mabel like that. Especially…not now."
Ford sighs "Of course, I know that." he turns to Mabel "That's why…I've been thinking over the past week, before you leave…I want to let you know, how sorry I am."
"Grunkle Ford, really it's not your-"
"I was so blinded by my own bitterness and prejudice, I saw your potential, Dipper. But…I blinded myself to Mabel's." he turns to her "...I know you don't wanna leave this town, I can see it in your eyes. Neither of you are ready to say goodbye to anyone else, frankly…I don't blame you."
"Are you…offering to teach me too?" Mabel asks him.
"Frankly, yes." Ford tells her "Your intuition in danger reminds me so much of Stanley, you wouldn't be a conventional student…but if this town has taught me anything, conventional wisdom isn't everything."
"It's…it's true!"
"Dipper here even told me you helped solve the mystery of the town's founder a long time ago." Ford tells her "But…of course, it's just an offer."
"Entirely up to you, Mabel." Dipper tells her "I'll go wherever you go."
Mabel's eyes water "...I…I don't know."
"Ah, of course."
"I'm..I'm not saying no!" Mabel shouts "It's just…it won't be the same without Grunkle Stan, here…and…"
Ford sighs "..You're worried I'm trying to replace him, right?" he kneels down, putting his hand on Mabel's shoulder "Mabel, it is entirely up to you. But I don't wanna replace Stan, I want to carry on his legacy. I want to train the two kids he gave his life to save to protect themselves and lead lives to make him proud."
"...Thank you."
He picks himself up "You don't have to decide right away, of course. But…you know, if I start up a school in this old shack..I'm going to need employees. Someone to keep the place tidy, perhaps."
"!...You don't mean-"
"I believe the mystery shack had a handyman, and a…I'm sorry, what did Corduroy's girl do?"
"Uh..be cool, obviously. She was pretty much Dipper's eye candy." Mabel suggests.
"Mabel! Now is not-"
Ford laughs a bit "Yes yes, those two."
Mabel hugs onto Ford "..Thank you…I…I almost forgot I had people left here, I..I want to stay. Please…I don't want to lose anyone else."
Ford hugs her "Well, I look forward to you two as my students then!"
Mabel rushes outside, wiping her eyes as Dipper follows behind her.
Ford sighs, looking at a picture of Stanley nearby. His eyes water "..You were always wiser than me, Stanley. I..I wish I had told you that, just once."
He takes the photo, and takes it to his room in the shack. Walking back to the old carpet room, sitting it down next to a photo of his parents he's prepared in the room "You were the one who knew, family always comes first…goodbye, my friend."
