For a scrawny little brat, Bikky had quite a mouth on him, and Dee might have been impressed if the insults and cursing weren't being directed at him. As it was, he was more than a little offended, not at the words themselves, which he could easily shrug off; he was an adult, and he'd been called a lot worse by people way more dangerous than an angry ten-year-old. No, what annoyed him was being unfairly blamed for something that wasn't his fault!
"Back off, you little runt! I had nothin' to do with this. Hell, I wasn't even there!"
If he'd thought that would calm the situation down, Dee was sadly mistaken.
"What d'you mean, you weren't there? Ryo's your partner, you're supposed to protect him, so why weren't you doing your job?"
"Because I was at the frickin' courthouse, testifyin' on a case from before I met Ryo! D'ya think I wanted to be all the way across town instead of watchin' my partner's back? Ryo was workin' with someone else today, and when I find out who, I'm gonna tear 'em a new one!" Dee glared down at the kid. "If they'd been doin' their job…" He fell silent as Ryo appeared from the treatment area, frowning.
"This is a hospital, so you might want to keep your voices down. I could hear you all the way back there. I'm surprised you haven't gotten yourselves kicked out of the ER."
"Ryo!" Bikky ran towards his foster father and stopped short, afraid to touch him in case he hurt him. "You're okay?"
"I'm fine, just bruises and a few stitches. It looked worse than it was."
Dee breathed an audible sigh of relief. "Had us worried for a while there."
"While I appreciate the concern, this was nobody's fault. Well, except for the guy with the switchblade, and he'll probably do jail time. Everybody was doing their job, but no matter how careful we are, sometimes things happen that nobody could have anticipated. Luckily, Ted's ankle is only sprained, not broken, and if he hadn't slipped, things might have gone a lot worse."
"Okay, maybe I won't kill him." Dee stuffed his hands in his pockets.
"Good, he feels bad enough already. As for you…" Ryo turned to the boy. "If you ever use language like that again, you'll be grounded, permanently."
Bikky hung his head. "Sorry, Ryo."
