Without further ado, enjoy!
One week and a half had passed since their exile. The trip towards Zeus 'ideal' place was mostly uneventful, besides the usual pesky goblins that were quickly dealt with. They passed through plains, forests and small cities, until finally arriving at a remote rural village in the mountains.
One week and a half had passed since their trip towards their new home was mostly uneventful, besides the occasional pesky goblins that were quickly taken care of. They passed through plain fields, forests and small cities until they arrived at a remote village near the mountains in the north.
Zeus and Hera hid their past and godhood. They told us to do the same with our past affiliations, saying it was best to not draw attention to them.
There was nothing remarkable about the place. The village was inhabited by humans and was located at the base of the mountain chain, it had a cozy feeling and peaceful ambience all around. Perfect for those running away from trouble and seeking to live a quiet life.
The people were doing their daily activities as the newcomers arrived. Herding the cattle and sheep, working on the fields, preparing to go hunting and other activities essential for the village prosperity. As they strolled through the middle of the village, the curious eyes of the peasants followed their every step, especially the children, who looked in awe at the black haired elf. An elderly man suddenly approached them, an inviting smile on his face.
''Greetings strangers, what brings you to our humble village? If you are looking for trade, them we are more than happy to oblige you!'' He looked curiously at the visitors.
''Hello good sir, we aren't looking to trade, in fact we seek to settle ourselves on this village!'' The elder´s curiosity spiked up at Zeus' words.
''You see, our old home got destroyed by monsters and since then we have been wandering in search of a place to start anew. I´ve heard that this village was mostly safe from the dangers of the wilderness.'' The god told his cover story, it was amusing how good of an actor he was. The villager's curious eyes became sympathetic.
''I see… Then you and your companions are more than welcome in our village. There's a shack in the end of the village that is unoccupied since the family that lived there left. You can settle in there, the only thing we ask in return is that you help with the tasks around the village! " The elder offered.
"That's perfect, we'll gladly help around the place if that's what you require!" Zeus grinned heartily as the village elder nodded.
"Follow me, I'll show you around the village." He gestured to them as he started walking.
He gave them a tour of the place, showing all the main points of interest in the village. The fields, the animals, the beginning and end of it, even the rules that everyone abides to. At the end he presented them with their new home.
''This is the place!'' The elder pointed at the shack. It was a simple place, not big but also not small. The building looked a bit rundown by disuse, but nothing a little reform couldn´t solve. It was located at the far end of the village, a bit isolated in Luke´s opinion.
''Thank you for letting us stay, here´s a compensation for you good grace!'' Hera handed a small bag of Valis to the man.
''Oh no, no it won't be necessary! Your help around the village will be more than enough, save it for yourselves!'' The elder refused, placing both his hands in a placating manner.
''I insist, use it to bolster the village in as our acknowledgment for your hospitality!'' Hera placed the bag in the old man's hand.
''Alright… If you have any doubts or need anything don´t be afraid to ask!'' The village elder said before departing. After he was far enough the god spoke again.
''So what do you guys think?'' Zeus turned towards them, spreading his arms to emphasize the house.
''It´s an insult compared to what he usually had, but beggars can't be choosers!'' Hera commented.
''I think it's perfect for our new life, even the baby can life happily in a place like this one!'' Meteria butted in, the elf nodding beside her.
''It's a nice place, the people are good, it's away from danger… I guess we can have a peaceful life here!'' He added, his god wore a prideful smile on his face.
''I knew this place was perfect, i wasn't the leader of the greatest Familia for nothing!'' He said rubbing his nose in vainglory; before his spouse smacked him in the head.
''You only got where you were because of me, don´t forget that you pervert!'' Hera scolded him, pointing her fist towards him.
''Ma, ma, you can´t take a joke!?'' He rubbed his head, while Meteria and Luke laughed at the deities' antics.
The elf gazed at their new home. So, this is where they would begin their new lives? He wasn't even a bit against it, the people were nice, the place was calm and secure. A guarantee that they would live peacefully and isolated from those that persecuted them. That he could stand behind for.
''We only need to give it a nice reform and polished and it would be good as new!'' Zeus drew his attention from his thoughts. Yeah, they would have some work to do until it could really be called their home.
''I can help with the heavy lifting, but i don't have experience with reforms or anything of the matter…'' The onyx haired elf commented. His god waved his worry aside.
''Leave it to me boy, I know how to make a house from the ground up if need be!'' Hera snickered at her spouse´s bolstering.
''He may be a depraved old bastard, but he knows his stuff. I'm sure he can guide you, Luke!'' Zeus shamelessly nodded at her affirmation, Meteria and Luke just shook their heads.
''I guess we should get started them!'' The god marched inside the shack as the rest trailed behind him.
The interior wasn't anything surprising to them. The house had three bedrooms, a simple kitchen that was connected to the dining room, only a balcony separating them. The restrooms were located outside, a good distance from the house itself. Spiderwebs were as common as the cracks in the wood. They've definitely got some work to do…
3 Months later
They were getting used to the quiet life in the village. The reform was done in less than two weeks and the shack looked as hospitable as it once was. Everyday; with the exception of Meteria; they would take part in the activities around the village. Be it in the fields helping with the plantation or herding the animals around the pasture.
Zeus and Luke even helped in the hunting parties. Initially, the hunters were skeptical of having a child with them, but once he showed them his prowess with the bow, they soon welcomed him as one of their own. Soon, the Cranel´s; as they presented themselves amongst them; were part of the village like anyone of them.
Luke had gotten used to the routine around the settlement. At the crack of dawn, after having his early breakfast, he would join the hunting group for the day. He had become quite famous amongst the hunter and the peasants in general because of his proficiency in hunting, the children in particular were amazed that someone their age hunted with the adults.
In the evening, if the fields required a spare hand he would be there to assist them. In the cases where they didn't need help, he would have most of the time free. The children around the village would be adamant that he played with them, when that was the case.
Ever since he stood foot on the village the children were amazed with him, never having seen an elf, much less one their age. So every spare time he had they would bug him to play with them, asking most types of questions you could think of.
What was like being an elf, if he could see in the dark because of his eyes, or even if he would marry them in the case of the girls. Speaking of which, he reluctantly became a sensation amongst the girls. They would always try to embrace him, caress his ears or spend some time alone with him. The last one being Zeus' vague explanation about his predicament.
They never left him to his own devices, even when was training in his spare time, gathering a small crowd to watch him.. It was becoming quite the annoyance lately, especially because the boys were becoming jealous of the attention the girls were giving him.
Zeus often commented that he was a 'lucky bastard ' for some reason when he told him about it, while giving him 'advices' on how to proceed, advices that he asked me to not tell Lady Hera about. Ever since then, Luke started to avoid the girls around the village for his own peace of mind. Better to not follow his god´s strange advice for now.
Meteria´s pregnancy forced her to stay out of any arduous task and such she would be seclude mostly inside the house. She never really got lonely as Hera spent most of the day taking care of her and the house itself, making the meals and chores around their home. Something that came as a shock to everyone, including Zeus itself, on how good of a housewife the usually proud and pompous goddess could be.
In the night, the elf was usually beside the pregnant woman. He would help her with whatever she may need, and also keep her company. They would talk about their day, any news that arrived in the village through the merchants, and various other topics ranging from tales to how much they awaited Alfia and Zald´s arrival…
The surviving duo from the black dragon had not reached for them since Zeus sent his letter. Everyday, the elf and the soon-to-be mother awaited anxiously for their arrival. Each day was a disappointment as no news about them reached the village.
That is, until today…
Luke was coming back from today´s hunting, when he heard the commotion going around the village. The peasants murmured about some strange visitors that had just arrived. The elf´s mismatched eyes widened. Could it be!?
''Excuse me miss, but where are those visitors right now?'' He asked with excitement building into his voice. The gossiping woman turned towards him.
''Ah Luke, back already! They are currently talking with the village elder.'' She pointed towards the elder´s home. Luke thanked her quickly before heading towards said house.
Reaching the front of the house he pushed the door open. The sight that met him made his eyes teary. A hulk of a man clad in pitch black armor with a cloak around his form, beside him stood a woman in a familiar goth dress. They had theirs back turned towards him as they spoke with the old man, turning upon hearing the door opening.
They didn't have time to react as a small form crashed into them, embracing them as if its life depended on it. Alfia moved on reflex to swat him off but stopped herself, recognizing that black hair and pointy ears anywhere. Both relaxed upon seeing the kid look up at them, tears staining his cheeks.
''Y-You came… You really came." Alfia was lost on what to do, she never had to deal with a crying child before. She let her instinct guide her as he patted the boy´s head, making him embrace her even tighter.
''Of course we did kid, we wouldn't leave those we have left to fend for themselves!'' Zald's booming voice got the elf's attention.
''My dear sister resides here, so it's obvious i would come.'' Alfia said matter of factly. Despite the promise she had made to his parents, her sister was still the main reason she came. Deep down she knew she would eventually come, even if her sister wasn't here, although she would never say it out loud.
''Ah, so the old man Cranel is the one you were looking for!'' The elder pointed out. Zald looked confused at the statement, while Alfia got an annoyed expression on her face. That old pervert was using Meteria and her surname. The armor clad man looked at the boy for confirmation, the boy nodded his head.
''I can guide them from here, grandpa and grandma will be happy so see them!'' The elf said recomposing himself.
''Of course Luke, i will be in the fields if you need something.'' They parted ways as the boy guided the duo, while the old man got to his duties. The eyes of the village were entirely on the newcomers as they headed towards the far end of it. People gossiped about who they were, how they looked like adventurers and why they came to the isolated village. The children, being impressionable as always, regarded them with curiosity. Some peeked from behind their mothers, while others blatantly stared at them, even more so as the visitors seemed to be acquainted with the exotic elf.
'' This is where we are living since our banishment!'' Luke gestured to the shack in front of them. The survivors from the black dragon took in the appearance of the home as they made their way inside.
''Grandma, i´m back!'' The elf announced himself, an angry snarl could be heard coming from further inside the house.
''How many times do I have to say to not call me that-'' Hera paused as she came into view of the visitors he brought along. They stood in silence for a second as she registered the situation. Alfia snickered, breaking the silence.
''Still the same hysterical old hag I see!'' A vein popped on the goddess forehead as she grit her teeth angrily.
''After everything that happened you still remain the insolent child that lived in that rundown church, can´t you show some respect at least once!?'' She stomped angrily towards the last child of her Familia.
''Spare me from your nagging, you should be grateful that i can tolerate you on my sister´s behalf!'' Sparks flew between the two as they got face to face. Zald and Luke stepped to the sidelines, hoping that their ire won´t be targeted at them.
''Alfia?'' A sweet voice brought an end to their bickering, a voice that The Silence knew too well…. There, stepping out from the door of her room was her beloved sister. She used the door frame as support, her bulging belly putting a strain on her frail body.
''Meteria!'' She rushed to her sister's side, eyes frantic with concern. The pregnant woman embraced her to soothe her worries.
''I'm a fine sister,I'm just glad you are fine!'' Meteria said, her sister embraced her back, being careful with her belly.
''You got much to explain to me, you hear me?'' Alfia said in a barely stern voice, having difficulties getting angry with her sister. The others left them to their heart touching moment, going instead to meet the last occupant of the house. Hera quietly guided them to the back of the shack, getting them to the backyard.
Thud
Thud
Thud
A chopping noise could be heard as they walked through the yard. Following it, Zeus could be seen placing another piece of wood on a trunk, ready to part it in two with his ax. The sound of crunching leaves and sticks drew his attention from his current task, turning towards the source a sly smile grew on his face.
''Hello old man, how´d have been?'' The Glutton extended his hand, the god´s smile couldn´t become any wider.
''You magnificent bastard! You really came back without missing any limbs.'' He clutched the hand in a firm handshake, his booming laughter echoed through the backyard. Despite Zald´s distaste for the god´s lecherous antics, he still valued him as a close friend. He had lost count of how many times he had to rescue the pervert from the jaws of death after he spied on Hera´s children.
''It took a while for us to recover, the fight took its toll on our bodies… Fortunately, I was able to gather an herb around the Black Desert that helped counter the Behemoth´s poisoning. Alfia was treated with a branch from a sacred elf tree in the elven forest we´re recovering, also stabilizing her condition!'' Zald explained their journey after the battle, his features became sour.
''We were foolish… And paid the price for it… It was a massacre, the dragon scoffed at our attacks, toying with us before killing each one of my comrades… Even Maxim and the Empress didn't stand a chance against it!'' The deities wore sorrowful expressions on their faces. Luke´s eyes couldn´t be seen as his bangs obscured his face, he clenched his fists tightly almost drawing blood. Zald gazed at the boy, his eyes pitting him as he sighed.
The glutton took off his big backpack, hitting the ground with a heavy sound. He started to rummage through it drawing everyone's curiosity. After some moments he pulled out a pair of swords. The elf´s eyes widened in recognition, he would have recognized those anywhere. His parents swords, but how!?
''Jared and Selena asked me to give them to you kid. It was their request before they stalled the beast so we could escape… They saved our lives, and i´ll gladly honor their wish!'' He spoke with a serene tone. Luke approached him as he extended the blades to him.
His father's sword, Nightingale, is a pitch black sword with trims of gray. It has a black hilt connected to a hand guard that drops down on the right side. Attached to this elongated area of the hand-guard is part of Nightingale´s blade, so as to better aid the user in retaining their grip on the sword when it is being used. The blade is completely black like the rest of the sword and the said blade is outlined in a light gray. A small cross is emblazoned on the flat of the blade, just beneath the tip. ( Based on Kirito's Elucidator)
Star Platinum, his mother counterpart, is aqua-colored. Its grip is a darker color than the rest of the blade and is completely straight. It leads up to a crossguard that is exactly perpendicular to the grip and is designed to look like a pair of conjoined dagger blades. At the center of the guard is a large aquamarine gem. The blade itself is a deep aqua color, the base of the blade has a light-aqua attachment that causes the blade to have a natural indentation when one traces its length due to the angle that the attachment bends at. ( Look up for Dark Repulser)
Luke grabbed the blades, holding them by the flat of the blade and the handguard so as not to cut himself. His eyes were distant, his thoughts wandered to the memories he shared with his parents.
All the time they spent together, strolling through the city. Leaving in amazed at the fascinating and mesmerizing places and people around the dungeon city. Entertaining him as they walked, buying snacks and curious trinkets for him. The happiest moments they had together…
How they would interact with both Zeus and Hera Familias. The wholesome and heartfelt interactions and antics in their daily lives around their friends and family. How they would start his training, inviting others to come along. They laughed, played and practiced with him, making it a fun experience for him… All of it was gone… they were gone… forever…
Tears dropped in the dark and aqua blades.
This was the only thing he had to remember them… their last gift to him… a last goodbye. They couldn't keep their promise, no matter how much he wanted them too.
But… maybe he could do it in their stead… Yes, that's right!
He can honor their promise and turn it into a reality himself! He could become stronger and master the art of the sword; but for him to reach that goal…
''Mr. Zald…'' The adventurer looked at the elf. Although tears streamed down from his face, his resolute expression and voice betrayed them. His eyes shone with determination as they were firmly planted on the level 7.
''I want to become stronger, I need to fulfill my promise to them… But I can't do it on my own. That's why… Can I be your apprentice!?'' He requested, bowing slightly to the man.
The corners of the man's lip raised up. His resolve was genuine, coming straight from his heart. Zald had trained the kid before, he was a good student, always listening and working on his flaws and mistakes. He liked hard working individuals, so naturally he had grown fond of the child. He was even considering taking him as one of his pupils after the quest was done…That is, before that thing took all of his students from him.
Getting back on track. The Glutton didn't have any reason not to accept the boy under his wing.
Much to the contrary, it would set a purpose for his ephemeral life, while honoring the elf´s parents request to watch over the kid.
''Of course you can, it's would be part of my duty as a executive member to train the only other remaining member of the Familia!'' The boy lit up in excitement at his response.
''Be aware though! My training regime is spartan-like, your bones will creak and break; you will fight until you can´t and then fight some more… Your will power will be pushed to its limits and i'll expect nothing but success from you, understood!?'' Zald said sternly, the boy nodded resolutely.
''Yes sir! I won't disappoint you, I promise!'' The man smirked.
Let's see if that enthusiasm survives for long.
''Ok, that´s a beautiful moment and all but i think you should take your stuff inside. We still have to set a space to accommodate you and Alfia!'' The god of thunder pointed.
The now master and apprentice shared a look, the elf´s determination never left his eyes. Zald nodded, grabbing his backpack, meanwhile Luke carefully carried the swords as they headed inside.
The light of the early dawn phased through the cracks in the foliage. The air was humid and slightly cold. Birds chirped and came out of their nests, small animals left their hiding spots and the eerie darkness of the night gave way to the lively ambience of the morning . As the forest woke up, three figures could be seen standing in a small clearing in trees.
''Why did i also need to come along?'' Alfia questioned, annoyance clear as the morning light in her tone.
''I'm certain he's going to break a bone or two in the training, so it's more practical if you accompany us, rather than having to take him to you everytime!'' Zald said matter-of-factly. The elf grimaced a bit at his claim. Guess he wasn't kidding when said he wouldn't take it easy on me…
''Sigh… Fine, so let's get started already, we don't have all day!'' Alfia resigned. Well, technically they did have all day.
Zeus had cleared them from the duties around the village, stating that he could take care of it, and that they should focus on his training. Nevertheless, they would help when the training sessions were over. That is, if the boy could even stand afterwards.
''Here, put this on!'' Zald tossed a piece of cloth to his student. He caught it, looking puzzled at his master.
"We'll be working on your Sixth Sense skill today. For that, you´ll be blindfolded while you dodge any incoming attack!'' He explained, the elf´s eyes widened. He was definitely in for a painful experience…
He covered his eyes with the cloth, making a tight knot so it wouldn't fall. He prepared his stance, awaiting for the signaling start.
''Also, if you peek or take it off your eyes, you regret it…" The Glutton said in a sinister tone. Luke double checked his knot.
His skill flared. He tried to sidestep the attack but he was too slow, his punishment was a dislocated shoulder. White hot pain, seared through his arm as he screamed in pain.
''There´s no countdown in a fight, you should always be alert to your surroundings!'' Zald lesioned as he swung again.
Luke ducked under the punch, the fist cutting the air right where his head once was. He didn't have time to think as a low kick took his legs from under him, making him fall on his injured shoulder. His shriek echoed in through the trees.
''Again!'' Zald commanded.
The elf grit his teeth as he stood up, immediately flickering his head to the side as a fist cut the side of his face. He jumped back as leg sweeped where his feet once were, bending his knees in sequence, escaping from a blow to the head. Before he could stand back up, a knee meets his chin, making darkness engulf his vision. His form flew for a couple of meters before hitting the grass, knocked out cold.
"He's all yours…'' The man gestured to the silver haired mage. She rolled her eyes in exasperation.
''Try to not knock him unconscious, it will only hinder his progress." Alfia got beside the boy, putting his shoulder back on its socket, before extending her hand to start healing him . A few moments later he was good as new.
''I´ll avoid hitting his head so much-'' The man was cut off as the elf woke up gasping. The duo looked amused at him.
''I thought it would take more time before you woke up, impressive.'' The Silence praised him, the boy looked around groggy trying to situate himself, not seeing a thing.
''Alright stand up, we aren't finished yet!'' Zald ordered as the kid scrambled to his feet finally catching up to what he was doing.
Luke tensed his muscles as he awaited for another round. He was starting to fear if would be able to even move once they were done.
His thoughts were interrupted as he threw himself into a somersault, narrowly avoiding a roundhouse kick to the side of his head. He lost his footing as he touched the ground, having to roll to the side to escape from an axe kick and starting to walk backwards while nimbly dodging a flurry of punches right after. A right hook hit him right in the tummy, making him fall to his knees while hurling his breakfast.
''Again!''
Luke wiped his mouth as he stood on wobbly legs, a bit hunched over from the last blow, raising his guard again. Zald didn't let up, throwing a streak of hooks and jabs towards the boy who barely dodged, the pain in his abs clearly bothering him and difficulting his movement. The man launched a kick towards his midsection, while the kid jumped back to escape it. But Zald pivoted on his heel bringing his feet in a diagonal slash, aimed at the collarbone. Luke tried to dodge but only managed to be hit in the ribs instead, a sickening crunch could be heard as the bone cracked. He was flung to the side, hitting the ground while clutching his side.
''Again!''
He could barely stand upright from the pain, but he grit his teeth and forced himself to his feet. Luke evaded the two jabs aimed at his head and a hook to the ribs, jumping and crouching afterwards to escape the subsequent kicks. He couldn't dodge a backhand to the face and lights went out for him a second time.
''What did i just say!?'' Alfia berated the man, making her way to the kid.
''I said I would avoid it, I didn't say I wouldn't hit his head! A real opponent would not be so kind.'' Zald pointed out nonchalantly.
' He has a point', the mage thought as she healed the elf again. Again he would wake up in a few seconds, as lost as the last time.
The training regime continued through the morning, only pausing for their meals, and ending in the evening. They would take it a little easier when Alfia left whenever she felt like it; although Zald still made him run laps around the village. That night, Hera and Meteria were astonished to see the boy stroll around the house like a corpse, almost sleeping on the table as he ate dinner. He was close to dragging himself to his bed afterwards, exhausted and stiff as a branch. His resolve was the only thing that didn't make him reconsider his decision.
Next morning
''Why did you decide to help me improve my magic Lady Alfia?" The silver haired woman sent a sharp glare his way.
''N-Not that i'm complaining though, you were the greatest mage of all Orario, i'm honored to have your guidance, it's just… I thought you wouldn't bother.'' He clarified his doubt, fearing her ire.
''Are you implying that i'm arrogant, it's that it child?'' Her tone made the elf shiver, her usually closed eyes were opened and promised suffering.
''N-No, th-that's not it! I-I just thought i wasn't worth your time, that's all!'' He waved his arms in front of his body trying to disarm the misunderstanding. The young woman walked towards him, her sharp glare focused on his face. He closed his eyes once she stood in front of him, waiting for the pain to come.
He flinched once something hit his forehead. But… It barely hurt him. He opened his eyes in confusion, seeing an extended index finger inches from his head, Alfi was bending to his level as her stern gaze faded. He rubbed the spot where he was flicked.
''Don't make assumptions foolish child, I decide if you are worth the effort or not!'' She straightened herself, crossing her arms under her bosom.
''Besides, I will have to be here anyways so it's better to teach you something, rather than be a mere sidelines healer!'' She genuinely wanted to see him improve and fulfill his promise, being willing to personally tutor him.
She had only a few students before, but most gave up on her excruciating training and strict persona. There were only a select few she could tolerate around her and most avoided her fearing her wrath, resulting in an extremely low number of those up to her standards.
''Getting back to the point, to take the role of a magic swordsman it´s essential you master the Concurrent Chanting technique!'' The Silence started her lecture, the boy listened intently.
''This high level technique allows you to chant your spell while still fighting your opponent, running and dodging attacks. Therefore it's extremely useful for a magic swordsman in combat, so he doesn't become an easy prey while using his magic!'' The elf nodded enthusiastically, absorbing every word she spoke.
Alfia was a quiet person, one that valued silence around her. So if she was talking way more than usual to lecture him, and thus getting out of her comfort zone on his behalf, he sure as hell would take it seriously and honor her efforts for him.
''It's extremely hard to learn and especially to master for the level of concentration it requires. A single mistake can turn your spell into a bomb, hurting the caster or worse. To counter it, you need to develop a cool mind in stressful situations and that is what we´ll focus on today!'' Alfia paced in front of the boy as she explained the technique.
''We´ll start small, only sparring while you chant your magic, but as you progress so will the difficult!'' She gestured to the multiple logs fixated on the ground, they occupied almost half of the clearing they stood on.
''Once you progress enough, our sparring will take place on top of the logs. Another layer of caution will be added as you´ll need to redouble your attention to your footing, straining even more your concentration. Any questions?'' She stopped in front of the boy with a stern face.
''Can't I accidentally die from a break in concentration?'' He asked with a pained face.
''That´s a possibility, but you can only improve if you risk yourself and face death's door head on. Many stagnate out of fear and conformism, be careful to not fall with that lot!''
Looks like he doesn't have a choice, hum? If that's what he needs to do to become stronger, then so be it! He'll break every bone on his body and perish before giving up.
''If that's all, then tell me about the your current magic!'' She brought him out of his thoughts.
'' I have two spells'' He held his index and middle fingers up.
''Deus Tonitrui is a lightning enchant magic that envelops my whole body, boosting all my physical stats as a result. It can also cover any weapon I hold and shock anyone that touches me or anything I hold, at my will. It has its cons, however; it's very taxing on my body and on my mind reserve. Especially if I use it to its fullest! '' He lowered his middle finger.
''Ardenti Caelo is a lightning spell that has three levels, opposed to most spells. The first one does not require a chant, being activated with the word Gehen, although it's the weakest of them all. The second and third need a chant to be cast, with the latter being the strongest and longest but has the drawback of consuming all my mind, knocking me out!'' He lowered his index finger. The young mage put a hand to her chin in thought.
''I see… We shall focus on your Ardenti Caelo for now, being the one that uses a chant. Keep it at the middle level, no point in having you black out after successfully doing a Concurrent Chanting!'' Luke nodded at her.
''Got it, shall we start then-'' The last word barely left his lips before he had to dodge a jab. This no countdown thing must be a common thing between both Familias…
''Heed my words, mighty god of thunder-'' He swiftly evaded a sequence of jabs aimed at his head and upper body. ''Lend your strength to a faithful follower-'' The tip of a foot cut some strands of his hair as he lowered his form, performing a summersault to escape the subsequent low kick.
''Help me overcome the challenges that lay in my path-'' Alfia kept pressuring, combining kicks and punches, pivoting and elegantly maneuvering after each blow. A spinning kick, hit his sides fully. He grit his teeth and kept his mind away from the pain. He locked her extended leg under his armpit with his arm.
''Hurl your thunderbolt from the skies-'' Alfia used his grip on her and brought her other leg to the side of his head. He extended his right arm upwards, blocking the blow and catching it under his armpit, a sickening crunch echoed as the elf did his best to remain concentrated.
'' Strike down any tha-'' He didn't get to finish as Alfia arched her back and supported her hands on the grass, using his grip on her to launch him over her. Luke went flying over the clearing, only stopping as a tree stood on his path.
As the air was forcefully expelled from his lungs upon hitting the trunk with his back, a blinding light engulfed his vision. Pain seared through his body as a deafening explosion occurred on top of him and then he felt nothing.
He opened his mismatched eyes and stood up startled.
''Not bad for your first try… I see that i won't regret the decision of teaching you!'' The young woman caught his attention, standing behind the confused kid.
She approached him, her hand extended. The elf looked at her gloved palm for a moment, a small smile formed on his face as he took her hand, dragging himself off the dirt.
''Come on, we still got plenty of time until lunch!'' Alfia said reading her stance, the boy mirroring her getting ready for another round.
1 Week Later
The dim orange light of the late evening permeated from the window frame. Bathing in a gold light throughout the room. Simple, but robust wood furniture occupied the insides. A comfortable bed with crisp white sheets, a desk with various books piled on it and a chair by the bedside; a wardrobe hugged the wall near the end of the bed. In the space between the bed and the wardrobe was the thing that hinted to the owner of the bedroom.
A crib. One that awaited for the future member of their family to claim its place in it.
The door opened gently; a pregnant young woman entered through it, accompanied by her usual caretakers. A black haired elf and a beautiful silver haired mage; both helped her move as the 7 month pregnancy took its toll on her mobility.
As they helped her to her bed; Alfia took the chair by the bedside and sat cross legged, pulling out one of her books. Luke sat beside the kind white-haired woman, smiling warmly at her.
''Lady Meteria, what name will you give to the baby?'' He asked curiously. Meteria´s face brightened.
''Bell. Bell Cranel! That's what i´ll name it, it's a name that fits a boy as much as it fits a girl!'' She spoke happily about her future child. The elf placed a hand to his chin, taking a pondering expression.
''Bell… Bell… Wait, this isn´t the same sound that Lady Alfia's strongest magic produces!? I heard some of Hera girls commenting about it.'' The Silence took her eyes off the book upon being mentioned in the conversation; although it still hid most of her face from view.
''Yeah, it is. In fact, that name was her idea when I asked her about how she would name a child of her own!'' Luke made an understanding face, but then scrunched his eyebrows.
''But i thought she would not want kids?'' Alfia´s left eye twitched.
''Oh, she does! Although she never admits it, deep down I know she yearns to have children of her own! " Alfia closed her book with a resounding thud.
" I seek no such thing, children are too noisy for my taste.. Please, refrain from embarrassing me in front of others, dear sister! " The sorcerer rebutted with her eyes closed, maintaining a calm facade.
"That's not true and you know it! Otherwise you wouldn't have said you enjoyed training Luke." Meteria crossed her arms in a placating manner, a sly smile adorning her face.
''You are aware i never leave your side, but you are making me entertaining the idea as of now!'' Alfia opened her eyes slightly to gaze at her sister.
The two started an argument, but the elf tuned it out, focusing on his thoughts.
I know Lady Meteria likes to say some outlandish things to get a reaction from her sister, but could it be true? Could the Monster of Talent, know from distancing herself from others, really like his company?
It was absurd for him. She did tolerate him, but to have a certain level of affection from her was a fever dream in his opinion.
''You like kids, you are just afraid to open up to them that's it!'' Meteria said annoyed.
''Just because you haven chosen this for you, doesn't mean i desire it for me, no matter what you may say!'' Alfia´s collected form was crumbling as her features looked sour.
''Maybe it's because Lady Alfia dislike being seen as old by someone else!'' The elf said without thinking, drawing the attention of the arguing siblings.
…
No… No, no, no, no, wait, wait, wait-
In the blink of an eye the boy was clutching the top of his head on the ground. The ashen haired woman stood in front of him, her fist extended after giving him a Gospel Punch. The meanest punch one could receive in its entire life.
"Let that be a warning, next time I won't be so lenient!" She said without remorse.
"Alfia don't be mean to him, he cherishes you just as much as you do him. You'll just drive him away with this attitude!" Meteria scolded.
Alfia looked between the pained child on the ground and her berating sister. She stood there with a blank face for a few moments.
"I'm leaving this nonsense, I'll take my bath while at it. Call me if you need anything!" The silence left the bedroom. The kid got back up still rubbing his head as he took his seat on the bed again.
''Forgive her, she doesn't mean it, she just… a lot more insecure than she lets on…'' The white haired woman started to caress his injury to soothe the pain.
''I know,I don't really mind it too much, not that I like being hit though!'' A warm smile formed on his face.
''Since I first met her, I always saw how she kept everyone at arm's length… She can be kind of crazy sometimes, but I know deep down she's a good person… That's why i never gave up on my attempts to approach her.'' Meteria kept caressing him as her features brightened up.
''And your efforts seems to be bearing fruit, my sister has talked highly of you, even before she started training you!'' The elf looked at her aghast.
''She never commented about anyone else with me without it being purely professional. So when she met you, she talked about a little elf that 'Insisted on interacting with her and wouldn't leave her alone!''. Once she started telling me about the times she humored the idea and started to spend time with you, I was so happy for her.'' A sad glint appeared in her blue eyes.
''She always worries about me and I'm grateful for it, but in the process she ends up forgetting about herself! So, when I saw her open her heart little by little to you, it gave me hope that she hadn't given up on herself…'' A tear streamed down her cheek.
''If… If i´m not here for her, can you do me a favor?'' The kid looked concerned at her distressed state.
''Can you be there for her in my place?''
Luke was shocked at her request, eyeing her with a troubled face.
''My illness is worsening as time passes by, and I'm worried not only for my child but for her… I already have the means to guarantee that the sickness won't affect the baby, but… I can't do anything for my sister if don't survive!'' The boy embraced her as she started crying.
''S-She values me too much a-and i don´t know how she will react if i´m no longer beside her!'' He embraced her tighter, comforting her for a minute before proclaiming resolutely.
''Leave it to me! I promise that I'll stay by her side, even if she doesn't like it!'' Meteria gave a small laugh at the declaration as she rubbed his cheek.
''T-Thank you Luke, you are too kind…'' The touching moment lasted for a few seconds longer before both jumped as a loud explosion was heard coming from the other side of the house, making the whole structure shake.
''You dare try to spy on me; filthy degenerate, i´ll kill you!'' Alfia's muffled scream could be heard coming from there.
''It-It was an accident i swear!'' Zeus' pleading voice resonated from the outside.
''Get out of my way Zald, i´m going to finish him once and for all!'' Her screams continued as frantic steps headed towards the commotion.
''For heaven's sake, you never learn don't you old bastard!'' Hera´s angry scolding joined the fray as the sound of fighting could be heard on the outside.
Meteria and Luke looked at one another with blank expressions at the situation, before breaking into full blown laughter.
It's been two months since he took the kid under his tutelage. From the first day he kept his word of overseeing Luke's progress, making his already harsh training scale accordingly. Even though his sessions were becoming more and more difficult, not even once he had complained about it. Not when his bones broke, not when he was beaten to a pulp in the spars, not when he could barely stand from exhaustion at the end of the day.
The elf´s resolve never failed to bring a smile to his face. Instead of becoming frustrated with his shortcomings and failures, he turned them into a fuel to better himself. Feeding the fire of determination that burned brightly inside his heart. He looked fondly at the boy who stood in front of him, wooden sword at the ready.
The elf took the initiative, dashing towards the man with a thrust. It was a feint however, changing directions once he got close, he lowered his form while aiming for his sides with a slash. Zald easily saw through it and blocked, the kid wasn't deterred as he kept his momentum, sliding between the man's legs. He didn't have to hit his ankles as the Glutton jumped away from him. Once he looked down, he saw the boy´s extended hand.
''Gehen'' A lighting beam soared through the air coming right at him, the electric sound of it filled the clearing followed by an explosion of light.
Zald parted from the cloud of smoke as he descended, unfazed by the attack. As he landed he was met with the follow up blow in the form of a swipe at his head, one that he parried casually. The kid kept the assault, using the man´s bigger form against him as he mannovered inside his guard.
''Heed my words, mighty god of thunder. Help me overcome the challenges that stand in my path–'' Zald put pressure on the elf in an attempt to disrupt his chanting. However, the kid used his height advantage and stood close to his foe, nimbly dodging and diverting the attacks, not even flinching as some grazed him drawing blood.
''Hurl your thunderbolt from the skies, striking down any that opposes you-'' The kid flicked his head to the side as something small zipped where it once was, only managing to cut his cheek.
''Don´t tunnel vision on your opponent. You need to be aware of your surroundings during a fight!'' The Silence´s voice could be heard from the sidelines. Various rocks could be seen in her left hand as she bounced one with her right.
Luke evaded the man´s attacks, while also keeping an eye for any outside interference in the form of small rocks.
''Descend to the world and bring the wrath of the skies, Ardenti Cae—'' he bended his head forward from a blow he received from the back, breaking his chant.
He managed to evade one of the rocks, but Alfia predicted his trajectory and hit true in the next throw. The rock made a deep cut on his head, staining with red his onyx hair almost immediately.
Zald saw the opening and struck the boy in the abdomen, lifting him off the ground as he spat a mix of saliva and blood from his mouth. That had done it, with his concentration out of the window, the kid lost control of his magic.
White light evolved his body and then expanded until it suddenly exploded mid air. The force sent him flying even further away, his path ending in a boulder at the edge of the clearing. The man's eyes widened upon seeing his trajectory
'Dammit, he's going too fast. The impact could gravely wound him or worse!'' The Glutton moved to intercept the boy, but he had reacted too late.
A horrifying crack could be heard as he hit the rock head first, spreading fissures all around it. Zald speeded up, hoping to catch his pupil before he hit the ground. A silver figure blurred past him and before he could blink again, Luke was already in Alfia´s arms.
He approached them, deeply concerned for the elf´s health. He was in the woman's arms, out like a light, his clothes were charred and torn all over but what worried him was the injury to the head. Blood dripped between Alfia´s fingers as she held his head already in the process of healing.
Zald kept his arms crossed in anticipation, trying to quell his fears. Hera's children set him on the ground. His worries vanished, being replaced by surprise, as he did a double take upon seeing Alfia place the kid´s head in her lap. She wore a calm face and her characteristic closed eyes, while casually healing the rest of his injuries.
'Looks like i´m not the only one who has grown affectionate to the kid…' The hulking man thought as a small smile formed on his lips.
To think that he would have an effect even on the Incarnation of Talent herself… Sure he was a nice child , hardworking and polite, who was loved by members of both their Familias. But, to form a bond with that neurotic and violent woman, was something he never really saw coming. Sure, she tolerated some people around her and knew how to be professional about things, but that's where she drew the line. Of all the members of Hera Familia, the elf´s mother, Selena, was the closest he saw of her having a friend. Even then you could see it wasn´t quite close, being more a relation of mutual respect more than anything.
She finished healing the kid, although still maintaining his unconscious form on her lap. Zald looked amused at the situation.
'Better keep my mouth shut… Dying is not part of my plans for the day.'' He thought looking nonchalant.
''You got something to say? Go on, speak your mind!'' Alfia said calmly. The man flinched involuntarily upon being called out.
…
Shit!
''What would make you think that? i´m just worried for Luke´s well-being.'' He rebutted in a plain tone, trying to dig himself out of this hole. The ashen haired woman opened her left eye slightly, a piercing glare was sent on his way.
''I saw that goofy smile on your face. Don't make wrong assumptions about me!'' She said coldly. Zald shook his head in exasperation.
''You really can't be true to yourself can you?'' He said under his breath. A menacing aura made him freeze on the spot. He twisted his neck towards the source and saw the woman gently place the boy on the grass field. She had a calm face as she walked in his direction, the bloodlust oozing from her betraying her composure. Zald started to walk backwards with his hands in surrender.
''Hey, calm down, you got it all wrong. You see–''
''Gospel.''
The last thing he saw was a block of sound ripping through the grass heading towards him, before his vision was engulfed in darkness.
2 Minutes later
Luke opened his eyes, the light of the late morning straining his vision. His head felt like it had been split in two as he struggled to orient himself, the world spinning around him. He felt something soft beneath his head. A shadow was cast over his vision; he focused on it to see what it was. Silver hair, fair skin, a beautiful face with a calm expression; behind it he saw a blur of green from the foliage of a tree; that was what he could distinguish in his swerving vision.
"Motherrrr…"' His slurred speech made the woman look down towards him. Her calm visage strained for a second before she shook her head.
''No, unfortunately i´m not Selena.'' Her tone sounded strange to him; sorrowful.
He tried to get a hold of his senses, his vision stabilized a bit; but his head was killing him.
''W-Whaat happeneeed?'' He clutched his head trying to subdue the throbbing pain.
''You lost control of your magic, the resulting explosion sent you flying towards a boulder. You probably have a concussion from the impact, so you need to rest for now!'' Alfia explained looking at said boulder.
The elf cringed once he saw the cracks all around its surface. To be fair he was lucky that he only got a concussion. He looked back up towards the mage. The sun broke through the spaces between the leaves and branches, contrasting against her form, forming a beautiful light around her that captivated him. Upon being mesmerized by the angelical visage for a minute, a thought suddenly hit him harder than a rock.
'I´m in her lap!' He panicked internally.
What was he doing in her lap? Did she place him there or did he do something while he was unconscious? No, she would never let him do that, then why did she give him a lap pillow? No, that´s not important right now, what matters is what should he do now?
Now self conscious of his situation, it made it extremely awkward for him. But the worst part was that he saw how bad it could end for him. One small mistake and he was sure that he would pay dearly for it. To avoid any complications and treats to his life, he decided to close his eyes and wait for something to happen.
The chirping of the birds, the refreshing breeze and cool shadow granted by the tree, made for a relaxing ambience. The two stayed in silence for a couple of minutes, enjoying the peace and tranquility of the forest.
''Your parents asked me to take care of you…'' The woman´s soothing voice broke the silence. He opened his eyes to look at her.
''Before they gave us their weapons and faced certain death, they made a last wish… They asked us to take care of you in their place…'' Luke listened silently, surprised with her somber tone. She never really showed any emotion, outside of rage that is.
A pregnant silence arose after she had not spoken for a minute.
''You doon´t neeed to do thisss!'' He said slurring, the ghost of a smile appeared on her face.
''That's funny, they told me the same thing!'' His eyes widened, focusing on the mage.
''Then whyyy—'' Alfia lifted her hand. He closed his eyes on reflex, awaiting his punishment. He opened them again once he felt something run through his hair. She stroked her hand on his head with a smile on her face.
''I don´t mind fulfilling their request. Besides, we'll be living together for the foreseeable future, so we are stuck together anyways!'' The elf looked like a deer in headlights upon hearing her words.
He must be dreaming. He must definitely be dreaming, there's no way that this is real. In due time he'll wake up in his bed or sprawled on the ground from being knocked out; he was certain of it. But in the meantime he might as well enjoy this fever dream while it lasts.
''Thank you, for eveerything…'' The Silence opened her eyes upon hearing his words. He flashed her the warmest he had given her, making her unconsciously return it.
She kept caressing his head as a comfortable silence settled between them again. It lasted for a few relaxing minutes until the elf decided to look around the clearing. He rubbed his eyes to make sure that he wasn't seeing things.
''Is that Miiister Zald buuried in the ground?''
…
Alfia ignored his question, stroking his hair without a care in the world.
Meanwhile Luke kept staring at the pair of legs sticking out from ground in the middle of the clearing.
Yep! definitely a dream.
He ignored the strange scene, clearing his mind and enjoying the moment while he could before he woke up.
2 months later
Her day had begun as it usually did. She would wake up in the morning and wash herself; although her sister and basically everyone would be adamant she'd call for help or have someone nearby to assist her. It was coming to a point that it was bugging her already; sure their intentions were good and she appreciated their help and concern — But she was pregnant not disabled — you may call her stubborn, but she liked to at least do menial things herself. After doing her hygiene, the white haired woman would join her family for breakfast.
Zald and Hera usually owned the kitchen and were responsible for their meals. It came as a surprise to everyone how the vain and proud goddess; who never did domestic work in her old mansion; could cook so well. If that wasn´t enough, the giant of a man that moved with them, proved to be a masterchef.
The tough and rough looking adventurer, one would never expect to even know how to peel a potato, was an excellent cook. From what Zeus and even Zald himself had stated, his taste in food was quite refined, something he attributed to his famous skill that gave him the alias Gluttony. Because of that he improved his culinary to near perfection to sate his standards.
One thing that warmed Meteria´s heart was seeing the little elf diligently help the two cooks around the kitchen. Be it peeling vegetables and cutting them, steaming the pots, seasoning and more recently, trying to learn how to cook properly — All of it under Hera´s and Zald´s guidance of course —. It always brought a smile to her face whenever she saw how much of a structured and happy family they had become since their catastrophic failure and subsequent exile. It gave her hope that they could still find happiness after everything they had lost.
After breakfast they would part ways, each heading to their duties for the day.
Her sister, alongside Luke and Zald would be out in the woods; religiously training the boy to be a proper adventurer. She genuinely admired the kid´s resolve to grow stronger, even more so on how hellish the training sessions were, sometimes she even worried that he was overworking himself and damaging his health in the process.
But no matter how exhausted and bruised he became, he never wavered, looking as if he could do it all day. The only thing that soothed her worries was her sister. Being the strongest mage in her Familia and in all of Orario itself, she knew her sister's healing magic would guarantee that nothing major — or at least permanent — would happen to him.
Speaking of witch, it didn't go unnoticed by her how her sister was acting around the boy now. Even though she would deny it fervently, everyone saw how her cold demeanor melted when she interacted with the elf.
When they talked about his training, progress or any other topic that was brought up in their conversations; Alfia was treating him just like she treated her own sister.
Ever since they were children, her sister had always been overprotective of her. Two orphans left to fend for themselves in the slums of Daedalus Street; everyday being a struggle to just find something to eat. Despite the two being afflicted by the same accursed disease since birth, Meteria got the short end of the stick with her sickness being more severe than her sister 's counterpart. Because of that Alfia had burdened herself with the responsibility for the two, going out everyday to make ends meet.
Her sister had resorted to theft to sustain themselves, putting her fast learning and talent to use, she quickly guaranteed their everyday bread. That lasted until the day she had stolen from a certain goddess; a perceptive one that cunningly caught her on the act.
She made her children track down the thief and soon they caught the sisters in the church basement. The pair expected the worst when they discovered the goddess was no other than Hera herself, the patron of one of the strongest Familiar in Orario. To everyone's surprise the deity was amused with the twins and made them join her Familia as punishment.
Meteria loved her sister and was grateful for everything she had done for her; but what pained her was that in the process Alfia had forgotten about herself; her only purpose was to protect her and nothing else. She pushed everyone away, keeping only Meteria by her side. That had been true for most of her life, until a certain heterochromatic elf joined the mix.
At first she tried to scare him away like she always did, but the little kid would always come back and try to strike a conversation with her. So much, that she had complained with Meteria about an 'Stubborn child that wouldn't leave her alone!'. The young woman's eyes brightened at the information, now joining with the kid to make her talk to him. She initially refused, but with constant requests and puppy eyes by her sister, she ultimately gave him. That had been the kickstart of their relationship, as gradually the two were becoming used to each other.
The white-haired woman — and most members in their Familias — had seen first hand the far cry that was the way she treated Meteria and Luke compared with everyone else. Having sincere conversations, tea-parties, reading sessions, and various other activities that she hadn't done with anyone beside her sister until now.
And now that she had become his teacher in magic, their bond had only strengthened. Alfia was more relaxed and open with the boy. Also showing levels of concern for him that Meteria had only seen directed to herself.
She grinned madly once she heard from Zald how worried her sister had become for the kid from an accident they had in training. Her happiness only increased when Luke had told her about her sister's strange lap pillow.
Maybe her sister hadn't given up after all…
Through the rest of the morning, Meteria would usually have Hera as company. or her sister whenever she decided to. Being her favorite child — in the goddess´s words — Hera would diligently be by her side almost all the time; engaging in conversations, reading and talking about the books they had already finished, or any other activities they came up with.
She only met up with everyone else again at lunch, where they would come home to eat and prepare for their evening activities. Once they were gone again, her routine from the morning repeated itself throughout the evening. But frankly, she was never bored or unhappy with the way things were going. In the end she was grateful that they had a bright future ahead of them.
It was a normal evening when she felt it. Painful contractions in her abdomen struck her suddenly. She panicked when liquid started to come out of her, calling out for her goddess. Hera hurriedly made her way there, and upon seeing the stained sheets and pained demeanor of Meteria, she knew the time was near. The child was coming.
Hera calmed her down and explained that this was a natural process of childbirth and that there was no need for panic. After explaining the steps she would pass until her child was born, the goddess went to gather everything necessary for the long labor ahead. As she strolled around the house, a pair of footsteps passed through the entrance.
''I can't believe yet, i actually managed to do the Concurrent Chanting correctly!'' The elf´s voice echoed from the door.
''You still have much to improve, it's still a long way till you master it.'' Alfia´s quiet voice was heard as well.
The pair soon entered the kitchen where the goddess was collecting rags and a bucket of water. Luke looked curiously at the scene as Hera passed back and forth in the room.
''Grandma, what's going on?''
Hera continued roaming through the kitchen, not even reacting to what he called her, before she answered.
''Meteria entered labor and I'm preparing everything for it!''
A resounding crack was heard beside him. He looked surprised at the sound and saw only the splintered wood on the spot where Alfia stood. He barely had time to rationalize what happened before Hera approached.
''I´m gonna need your help with this, so I need you to focus. Go and call Zald and Zeus on the fields, we are going to need everyone here!'' Her tone was deadly serious. The elf broke out of his stupor and headed out to his assigned task.
I just hope that everything goes as planned…
Hera thought somberly, as she returned to search for the essentials.
Childbirth was a long, slow and painful experience. One that Meteria felt first hand throughout the agonizing hours she spent in the bed. As the contractions increased, so did the pain she felt. Her womb area throbbed as a searing pain spreaded through her being. The young woman squirmed in pain as she awaited to finally bring her child to this world.
Hera and Alfia were beside her throughout the whole process. Her sister clutched her hand as each contraction inflicted her. Upon hearing about her labor Alfia dashed to her side, refusing to leave for anything or anyone.
The men were helping with whatever they could. Following Hera´s instructions, they picked up any materials she would need throughout the young woman´s childbirth. But besides that, there was nothing substantial they could do, the only thing left was to wish for the child´s and mother´s well being.
Luke was worried sick for Meteria´s condition, staying in her bedroom assisting Hera and trying to comfort the soon-to-be mother. He did his best, but ultimately was forced to leave as the labor intensified; helping Zald with dinner instead to occupy his mind.
Each hour that passed was an unending torment. Meteria had to use all her strength and willpower to persist through all of it; all for the sake of her child. However, her biggest endeavor was still to come. Guaranteeing that her baby wouldn't suffer the same fate she and her sister shared; spending his life crippled with the same accursed disease. She couldn't stand idle and leave for fate to decide her child's future.
The gods have heard her prayers when Hera updated her status on her request. One day she woke with a strange feeling in her chest; she felt that something was different with her and acting on that solace sensation for her fears, she asked for her goddess to see her falna. Both were aghast when a new skill appeared on the sheet.
Amor Materno. A skill that allowed her to spare her child from the curse, but in turn she would be consumed by it, giving her life in exchange for her child´s health. She didn't think twice before set her course of action
Hera was against it, dreading the thought of losing her favorite child and one of the last of her Familia. But after Meteria reasoned with her, she understood her motherly love and reluctantly gave in. The young woman asked Hera to not tell anyone about this, especially Alfia. She would never allow it, she loved her sister too much. Fearing that she could something reckless, Meteria hided her plan from her until the deed was done.
At the crack of dawn, when the sun timidly rose over the horizon slowly cleansing the darkness of the night, her son was born. All the pain and anguish she passed until now was worth it in the end when she held him in her arms. His wail resonated inside the room as the young mother cried seeing his healthy form. Hair white as snow, a cute and round face with features that save for his rubellite eyes, were identical to her. Meteria looked fondly at his red eyes, thinking about a certain scaredy supporter.
How I wished you were beside me at this moment… At least Bell inherited your beautiful eyes, carrying with him a part of you.
Meteria kissed her son's forehead, cherishing every second he spent in her grasp. She would give everything to see him grow up. Having his mother by his side as they lived happily throughout their lives. Oh, how much she yearned for it, but it simply wasn't meant to be. Her fate was sealed the moment he was born. The birth left her weaker than she had ever been, but she could feel her strength leave her little by little. She could barely move her body, using all she had left to hold her son in her arms.
The usual stoic face of Alfia was replaced with a troubled look as she looked at her sister and her newborn. Hera eyed the heartwarming scene with a mix of joy and sorrow for what was to come.
''Alfia I-I … There's no easy way to say this, but …'' Meteria broke the silence after a couple of minutes.
…
''I'm going to die soon...''
…
Alfia clenched her fists, battling with herself to keep her composure and organize her thoughts. ''Nonsense! You just need to rest and recover, we will do everything to see to it.''
Meteria shook her head. ''No, there´s nothing to be done. I guaranteed my son´s well being through a skill i obtained, but in exchange, i will succumb to my illness…'' She lowered her gaze towards the healthy baby boy. Alfia stood up from her seat. ''No, no that can´t be…But why? I-I don't understand!'' She asked in disbelief, in denial about her sister´s sealed fate.
''Why? That's obvious, because of him of course. I couldn´t stand idle with the possibility of my condition plaguing my son as well!'' Meteria explained in a serene tone, stroking her son´s head. Alfia was shaking, barely containing her emotions. She looked at her nephew, he gazed at her sister with those eyes, his eyes. The perverted weakling that seduced her beloved sister, defiled her and now led her to the jaws of death. She couldn't stand being here not even a second more.
''A-Alfia, don´t leave her at a moment like this!'' Hera pleaded in vain as the mage marched outside, nearly reaping the door open.
In the hallway a heterochromatic elf stood in her way. ''Lady Alfia, what's wrong—'' The woman pushed him aside, not even bathing an eye, as she kicked the entrance door open. Luke gazed at the broken down door, Zeus and Zald also sticking their heads out in the corridor to see what happened. The boy made his way where the fuming woman came from; concerned with what might have happened.
''What happened? Lady Alfia looked distressed by something, is everything alright!?'' He spoke worriedly, scanning the room. Silence was his only answer as he made his way to the bed.
''Lady Meteria…'' He stood at the bedside, face clear with concern. The mother kept caressing her son as she looked up at the elf, a small smile adorned her face.
''You have always been a good hearted boy, one that I enjoyed the presence of and company. I will miss our conversations and fun moments together…'' Meteria said, a tear streamed down her cheek. Luke´s eyes widened in shock at the last part.
''W-What? You don't mean you´ll…'' He trailed off, awaiting the confirmation of the worst. The woman nodded somberly. ''Unfortunately, I don't have much time left. I traded my life for my child's health with an ability that I developed from my falna. That way, he is free from the condition that plagues Alfia and I… I don't regret it; my condition would only worsen as time passed, so if I could give what little I had left to spare him from this fate, it would be a small price to pay for salvation.'' Her words carried her resolve for her son´s sake, not showing even an ounce of hesitation from her encroaching destined death.
The elf didn't know how to react. He knew how much the childbirth could aggravate her illness, but for her to so calmly state that she would willingly die for her son. He couldn't have expected that development.
''Is there really nothing we can do?'' He asked somberly, his eyes watering as tears threatened to spill out. Why? Why did everyone close to him end up dying? But… Maybe there was a way to prevent this, there must be!
His hopes were crushed as Meteria shook her head. ''My sickness will kill me before we can even hope to do something, but… as long as my child lives on, I will be at peace.'' Luke clenched his fists, blood dripped from his hands as his nails dug into his skin. His hair obscured his face as tears flowed freely from his eyes.
He looked up once he saw a small form with a mop of white hair fill his vision. Meteria extended the sleeping Bell towards him, a soothing smile on her face. Luke carefully grabbed the baby in arms, looking at how peacefully he was while asleep.
''Don´t cry because it's over, smile because it happened;that´s a saying you need to carry in your heart. Sometimes, your loved ones leave you and there's nothing you can do about it… While you may be sad for a time, in the end you should smile for all the moments you spent together and cherish their memories!'' Meteria spoke in her sweet motherly voice. The elf wiped his tears in his sleeve, flashing a warm smile as he nodded.
Meteria´s demise was swept aside for the next hour, giving space for a jovial mood as Hera and Luke sat beside her. The three would open their hearts as they spent the last moments of the young woman engaging in jolly conversation. With the waning strength of Meteria, she placed Bell in the bed beside her, giving him all the motherly love she could with the time she had left.
As time passed, she could feel her life slowly come to an end, making her tired as she struggled to keep her eyes open.
The peaceful sleeping form of her baby was the last thing she saw before closing her eyes, never to open them again.
Meanwhile, in the base of the mountain chain, a pained wail echoed in the air. The cry of a woman who just lost the most precious thing in her life. The scream was soon drowned by a powerful explosion; generating tremors and a deafening sound that could be felt from miles away.
At the ground zero of the event. A silver-haired woman could be seen in the middle of a gigantic crater. She hugged her form, trying to find some kind of solace as she cried, wept and cursed the heavens from her loss.
